The owner of this restaurant was very welcoming and hospitable, but she needs to make sure all her employees are practicing health department guidelines regarding hand washing/personal grooming. My daughter and I both noticed the man who set up our table for service had long dirty fingernails. We later observed him in the kitchen preparing our meal. I ordered the goat hoof paya curry, which was rich and flavorful--Sofi even gave me a great tip to soak the naan in the curry for the full experience. My brother got the ruby chicken, and my uncle had the butter chicken My brother casually asked if they had baklava, even though it wasn't on the menu, and Sofi surprised us by bringing some out! She even showed us two more off-menu desserts, and we ended up buying a portion of each. Sofi is not only a talented cook but also a really inspiring person. My daughter and I dined here recently and were personally waited on by Sofi, the owner of the restaurant, and a waiter. What a delight! She is so warm and friendly. She shared some of her personal life with us and wanted to get to know us too. The decor is very feminine with a lot of flowers about and the seating is cushy and inviting. My daughter wanted to try the butter chicken and I ordered the Qorma Curry on Sofi's recommendation. Both were delicious, as well as the garlic naan and a spicy bean and garbanzo salad we ordered. A word about the Qorma: the meat is goat and it was tender and incredible, so delicious . My spice meter is pretty tolerant so I would say it's a "medium." My daughter has a low tolerance so it was a bit hot for her but she said the flavor was good. A final note, along with our dinner Sofi brought me a glass of wine as a gift for taking up our time with conversation. Truly though, getting to know her made our experience that much more special. Again I stumbled upon Sofi'z while traveling for work. I could not be more pleased that I did. I love the vibe of this restaurant, happy and upbeat. Full of lights and bright colors. The lady that served me was beyond nice. Happy to explain all the dishes to me and give a little history. To start I ordered the Chana Chaat, "A traditional Pakistani dish served with sweet and tangy sauce." I was different but lovely. I rarely leave reviews, but Sofi'z was so wonderful that I couldn't bear the thought of not saying something. My husband is new to the area while he is in training, and we went into Sofi'z on a whim since many places were closed for the 4th of July. We were immediately greeted by Sofi--the owner, chef, and waitress of the restaurant--who sat us and told us how her restaurant came to be. She is so charming and lovely, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is a reflection of how special she is. We asked her to choose some of her favorite dishes for us, and after some questions, she put in some food. She preps everything herself in the morning and has a chef in the back to cook it when ordered. We ended up with an appetizer of the fish pakora, and it came with a side of mint yogurt sauce and mango chutney for dipping. The mix of spices and herbs was incredible, the breading was wonderfully crisp and flaky, and the mint sauce put it right over the top. For dinner, we had qurma curry (served with rice), malai boti, and garlic naan. The qurma curry was delicious, the meat tender, and made me wish I had more to take home. My husband was obsessed with the malai boti (heavy on garlic, which we absolutely love), and we both agreed we could eat this every day for the rest of our lives. Sofi'z is not a restaurant that makes recipes and has the line chefs make their best approximation of the dish with the instructions given. Sofi'z is like walking into Sofi'z own home and getting a meal she prepared specifically for you. She even gave us a slice of her birthday cake before we left. My husband and I will be back many, MANY times. Every time I come to visit, if I can help it! read more

We had an amazing experience. My husband, his sister and I all went here after the Museum. There were so many lovely fun dishes to choose from. The owner was an absolute jewel. She came out and described all the different dishes, shared the back story of the restaurant, and talked about how she personally shops for and hand picks all of the ingredients on the menu. I have been here twice now and both times the whole experience was wonderful! The service from Sofi was so fun and we learned about the food and culture of Pakistan while enjoying some amazing dishes! The restaurant was clearly understaffed and customers all around us were either waiting to order, waiting for food or waiting to pay. everyone seemed to be waiting. we finally ordered ( at least 30 minutes) then another 30 for our drinks. I just moved to Chico and I came here with my family last weekend. To say I had a good experience is an understatement. The food, the atmosphere, Sofi herself....Phenomenal!! On our most recent visit to Chico we had a chance to give Sofi'z Pakistani kitchen a try. Located right downtown, Sofi'z is a nicely decorated place with a cool vibe and excellent food. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner Sophia who not only told us about the menu but how the restaurant came to be. The menu covers the basics including butter chicken, channa , curries, paneer, tandoori and all the breads and sweets you would want. We ordered the channa curry, chicken biryani and butter chicken, paratha and naan for the three of us. While we waited we enjoyed a cup of chai masala that we sweetened to taste. The food itself was excellent. We really loved the Channa Curry and enjoyed both the Chicken Biryani and Butter Chicken. We finished our meal with Shahi Keer and Gujjar Ka Halwa- a carrot based sweet that was my personal favorite. Overall we really appreciated the quality of the food, the nice presentation and great service provided and highly recommend Sofi'z for folks that love Pakistani / Indian food and those looking for a new adventure right in the heart of Chico. read more

Chef Sofi welcomed us, served us and proudly told us about every dish we ordered. From appetizer, to entree, to dessert - our taste buds and hunger were exceedingly satisfied! We ordered chana masala appetizer (served cold with perfect acidity), chicken biryani (generous chicken serving), goat paya (perfectly tender and broth was flavorful), saag paneer (yum), cheese paratha (filling and satisfying). She gave us homemade yogurt (fresh and generous portion). The best part were desserts: kheer and gulab jamun, both handmade! Must get!! We are advanced when it comes to Indian and Pakistani cuisine. This place is a standout in Chico! We ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was outstanding - great flavor and not overly sweet. We put that on top of their perfectly toasted soft garlic naan and it was fantastic. We also loved the vegetable biryani, which is a very large portion size with just the right amount of delicious spicy vegetable curry mixed in. We also ordered two vegetarian dishes - we loved the hot curry and also liked the cold chickpea and kidney bean salad but it wasn't as outstanding as the rest. UPDATE: Sofi'z is still phenomenal. My boyfriend and I treated ourselves to a Valentine's dinner here, and it was delightful from start to finish. This time we tried a sweet chicory drink (I wish I knew the name, but I just can't remember it for the life of me) that came in a huge glass goblet. Not only was it tasty, but it was so much fun to drink from that overly large cup! It was outrageously busy, but the service was fantastic, and everyone was so warm and friendly. As a heads up to anyone who read my last review, they no longer do takeout in the compostable containers they had before. The food here is still super delicious.
