Love the sustainable business mission but it doesn't really mean anything without execution. The food is pretty good - given they are not out of what you want that day. Both times I've been they were "out of" chorizo gravy, which is on half their brunch menu items. My most recent visit will have been my last one. Had lunch with my husband. I got the chop bowl with rope vieja, and he got the Cuban sandwich with a side of homemade kettle chips. Everything was very good, and nice serving sizes for the price. Service was very good as well. Before leaving I got an iced dirty chai to go, and not only was it delicious, but they had almond milk as an option. We waited until the restaurant was closed and the workers were fed before we were served our meals. This is a basic burger place... We ordered burgers and fish tacos!! We complained-- and we were told they had just gotten through the dinner rush..... (YES, and now the restaurant was near empty AND FREAKING CLOSED and we still could not get our food!) When they did come, they came out wrong.... They did not take into consideration the requests we made, ie, no tomatoes, extra mayonnaise please on BURGERS. WE ASKED 4 TIMES FOR THE MAYONAISE. Finally, my daughter went to the door where they bring out the food and stood IN FRONT of our waitress and asked for the mayonnaise. That's how we got it! The food was average-- not bad, my fries were cold but my BURGER was fine but NOT WORTH THE EXPERIENCE. To add insult to injury, because we were trying to leave quickly, (ha!) we asked for our check as soon as our food would arrive. NOPE, that was the ONLY THING FAST in this restaurant. They had those checks ready ~50 minutes before our food came out. And stupid, gullible us, we paid it. THEN WAITED. We asked for To-Go boxes as soon as we could and LEFT. Good food: I had a steak with chimichurrri sauce and mashed plantain, vegan hubby had tofu picadillo with meduros. Both were delicious, actually. The music playing on the "radio" was good too. The dining room is uncomfortable in a way I can't quite put a finger on, and service was efficient but not terrific. What it was, I guess, is I was cold and the booth was cramped. The bar (weirdly) has hard liquor but no beer or wine at present: this is a vagary of Ohio licensing law that will soon be straightened out. Terrible experience. We sat outside and the waitress came out and took our drink and food order. She returned with the drinks in a few minutes. We waited well over 30 minutes for our food, which never came and our server never checked on us once. We finally went inside and told her we were tired of waiting and she copped a attitude and said she would be right back. Lunch is served until 5:00. To me that means they know the difference between lunch and dinner. It is the only place I know of that thinks it is okay to take 75 minutes to serve lunch. I think the servers are used to the slow pace and thus, make no effort to explain that there will be a long wait or check in with diners. AND, there were only 5 tables being served! The food was very good, but definitely not something that would take more than an hour to prepare when the restaurant is not busy. The price is fair. We have gone here one time before not long after they opened and loved it (I had a Cuban and soup and he had empanadas). Today we decided to go back we were far from impressed with the food and service. We ordered empanada appetizer when it finally they were very dark and he tested a piece and they were burnt so, we flagged down a server and asked him to find our server that the empanadas were burnt. He took them to her as she was walking out of the back she gave a very annoyed head flip and attitude as she took them from him. My meal came out LONG before anything else which is very bad timing from the kitchen, my meal was ok the pork was dry there was no bacon and there was way to much cheese causing an imbalance in flavors. Once they got their meals then the new appetizer came out they were dark once again and was told by the server that the cook said that's just how they are we both tried then and they were clearly burnt and we have them back to the server and told her they were still burnt maybe they need to change the oil. He was disapointed the biscuits were frozen premade ones and her wrap was dry and flavorless. This restaurant has poor service. They are like honey badger... If you will. We waited over an hour & they were not busy. The coconut shrimp was good. It was served on some old romaine lettuce that was unappealing. The shrimp was really crispy brown & dipping sauce was good. The edamame pot stickers were good but dry. The black bean burger wrap was ok. It called for avocado salsa & no chunks of avocado could be found. When we asked the waitress, she said it was the white dressing on the wrap. - just not quite what we were expecting. They did give us 3 extra tortillas as we requested when we ordered, but forgot them & brought them out too late. We ordered the tortillas for a rice bowl that came with lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, beans, rice & some type of shredded beef. It was delicious- I especially loved the fresh cilantro!! Overall- I wouldn't go back. Ain't nobody got time for that. We wished we had gone to Ginger restaurant instead. read more

This place does not even deserve one star, but there wasn't a choice for a negative star rating.The food was not fresh, it was dry and crusted over, giving the impression of being heated up several times then served to my children. That was just one of the dishes...the other was brown, burned, and not thoroughly cooked on the inside. The third dish was soaking in hot sauce.....really hot sauce and we were not warned before hand. My son asked for milk, and the milk was sour...he was sick the rest of the evening. Sol restaurant in Athens Ohio.. Just tried the restaurant and I'm/we are super disappointed. Got a Mahi Mahi mesquite fish dip that was actually tuna.... doused with hickory smoke. At a price of $8.95 for the appetizer served with prepackaged Zesta saltines. Also got their CHEDDAR cheese curds... which was ACTUALLY mozzarella at a price about the same.... I brought it up to our sweet server who responded that she didn't know because she had never eaten it. I then asked if I could have a piece of paper to leave a note.... and she instructed me to on the bill. I also left my name and number after stating nicely that we were served "bait and switch" menu ingredients.... to which I have yet to receive a phone call.... To me- screams that I/we were right. 0 stars my friends. Avoid paying for high dollar items when you are served a can of tuna and fake cheese. First time I didn't finish nor take home the food that I thought I was buying. 7:58 I get a phone call from the owner yelling at me for the one star review.., YES! YELLING STATED I was wrong on the Mahi/cheddar... and that he pays 7.00 a pound for the Mahi.... I tried telling him that I spoke to the waitress and also left a note and yet he continued yelling at me about the one star review... Welp (yelp)... thais is the age of social media.., love it or hate it... Definitely not worth the effort. Tried this restaurant today and we were extremely disappointed. First we had to use the QR code stuck to the table to view the menu. Then place and pay for our order before we could even get a cup of coffee. Almost everything, including dessert, eventually came out at once. Trying to be polite to wait on my friend's entree, my food was cold by the time we got the waitress to find her entree, which ended up being cold as well. We could have kicked ourselves for not realizing that we could have removed the automatic tip when we PREPAID, for our food. This is not a restaurant. It's a place where you sit down to order to go food on plates. The service was almost nonexistent and the food definitely wasn't worth the price. It was edible, but I've made better at home. It's a shame because I has high hopes based on previewing the menu. My warning should have been the QR code on the table. read more

Soup was cold and made from a package with a ton of added black pepper, onions, parsley, a hamburger was ordered well done and was rare in middle, nachos were burnt bad enough that the cheese was burnt onto the paper, what little we could find. I went to SOL last night with my niece it's our favorite restaurant but last night service will not have me coming back for awhile. The waiter did not really know what she was doing. Took our order without writing it down( both our orders was wrong) I ordered the BQQ Mac and cheese she came out with pork Mac and cheese which would be fine but I can't eat pork, my niece ordered the island hopper than told they didn't have the sauce so she had to order something else which was the Miami with fries, she came out with the Miami with chips. I asked for water three different times and she never brought me any. Then when the server was sitting with another group of servers she was on her phone and when I said excuse me she didn't even get up to talk to me she just yelled across the pathway. I told her the Mac and cheese was wrong and she went back to kitchen to tell them the issue cause she even said " oh yeah you did order that didn't you" if she would of wrote it down it wouldn't of been an issue. She came back and said it's 9:04 and we close at 9 so kitchen won't remake your Mac and cheese but will give you the chicken. Five mins later she comes out with a grilled piece of chicken with the sauce on it. Still at this point no water in my glass sitting at the edge of the table. Every time I have had the Mac and cheese it's always been with BONELESS WINGS WITH GUAVA RUM BQQ. I go to sol atleast one to two times a week to order take out or to eat in and this service was unacceptable I would never tell someone we aren't remaking your food. When we got the bill nothing was taken off the bill and when we gave her the money 40 she said she would be right back, ten mins later she comes back tells us she had to run next door to get change and sets a ten on the table. I asked a server passing by if she had change cause I don't care how bad the service was I always leave a tip... my server heard and she came back and sounded mad that I even dared to ask for change. THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS LEAVING A TEN. We came in at 8:30 and if you don't want people in the restaurant tell them that. We didn't even think to look at the time you were closing cause there was still a big group outside eating and others. I won't be back for awhile. read more

I've been to sol a handful of times and the food is consistently pretty good but whatever they bring you is inconsistent. For example, we asked for hot espresso (the Cuban coffee) and they brought a large iced coffee? I've ordered it before and that's never what I received. We tried to order mimosas (typically just champagne and orange juice right?) and after talking to the bartender the waitress came back and said they were out of rum so they couldn't make it, she said that's not how "they" make it. She talked us in to getting the "beermosas," but they don't have beer in them...it's hard cider. Were pretty laid back and went with the flow and the food wasn't bad, but don't go here if you want things to make sense. I don't believe it's the servers' fault they don't know what's going on, because management has been non-existent the times I have gone and the servers make sure to mention that. read more

We had dinner there last night as part of a large group of 10. The food was excellent and everyone liked their particular dish. I had a Cuban sandwich on a pressed panini. It was very good as were the the kettle chips that it came with. It took a VERY long time to get our food, but I hope it was because of our large group and I think that everything was cooked fresh. The atmosphere is OK at best, but I think it's a work in process. The bar selection was very, very poor. There were no beer or wine choices; only hard liquor or selected mixed drinks. We used to live in Miami, Florida, and loved the Cuban food there, so we were excited to hear that a Cuban food restaurant was coming to Athens. But we were totally underwhelmed with what we encountered. The food wasn't bad, but it was completely tasteless! In my opinion, it takes quite a bit of work to make food taste like absolutely nothing! And the atmosphere was more like a school cafeteria than a restaurant -- a few wall hangings, or something to lighten things up, would help a lot. This was my first time at their new location. The atmosphere is a lot more spacious and casual than their uptown location. The menu seemed like it was expanded or maybe just some different things than the old one. The salads were wonderful and fresh with quality produce. Iced tea selection was great. Entrees were even a bit to salty even for a salt lover but edible, and not quite as fresh and enticing as one might expect. I chalked out up to "Cuban cuisine prepared by Ohioans" with rubbery shrimp and leathery corn tortillas. It was ok. There were more wait staff standing around than there were tables but yet most of our requests were forgotten or put off. I was having to ask other staff for items our wait person forgot. I might try to eat here again but I'll give it a couple months until they get the bugs worked out and the wait staffed fully trained. They were friendly and courteous however. read more
