Somisomi is a dessert shop that focuses on the combination of freshly made taiyaki and soft serve, creating a dessert experience that feels both nostalgic and modern. We walked into a casual, easygoing space where the concept is simple but works well: warm fish-shaped waffle cones filled with different flavors paired with creamy soft serve and toppings. The setup is straightforward and the atmosphere stays relaxed, making it a fun stop for a quick dessert rather than a place you would spend a long time sitting. The taiyaki is the main highlight and gives the desserts their signature appeal. The outside has a light crispness while the inside stays soft, creating a nice contrast with the cold soft serve. The fillings offer a good mix of classic and creative options, with red bean, custard, black sesame, and Nutella being some of the popular choices. We tried the red bean, which keeps things traditional with a mild sweetness, and the black sesame, which adds a nuttier flavor that pairs especially well with the waffle texture. Nutella works well if you prefer something richer and more dessert-like, with the warm pastry melting slightly against the chocolate spread. The soft serve is what brings everything together, with flavors like matcha and ube standing out. The matcha has a noticeable tea flavor without becoming too intense, and the ube adds a sweeter, more dessert-focused option that complements the warm pastry nicely. Adding toppings like cookies or cereal gives the dessert extra texture and makes each order feel more customizable. The combination of warm taiyaki, cold soft serve, and different fillings is what makes Somisomi different from a typical ice cream stop, with the temperature contrast and variety of textures keeping each bite interesting. Service is usually quick, which fits the style of the shop since most people come in for a treat on the go. The staff handles the steady flow efficiently, and the turnover moves at a pace that keeps the line from backing up. The menu is straightforward, but there are enough combinations to make repeat visits interesting, with the rotating soft serve flavors and filling options giving you room to try something new each time. Somisomi is a fun dessert spot that does a great job with a simple concept, especially if you enjoy Asian-inspired desserts and want something that balances warm, crispy, creamy, and sweet in one order. The quality of the taiyaki and the balance of flavors make it a worthwhile stop when you are in the mood for something a little different from the usual ice cream or pastry run.

    Sakura berry soft serve

A classic Cupertino Main Street staple. I used to come here a lot during my childhood, and it's popular amongst the nearby high schools. Their quality is solid, and their prices seem inflation-resistant, which is incredible. The service is always standard. I definitely feel bad for the high schoolers working there dealing with super long lines. There's a good amount of outdoor seating, but be prepared to wait a bit to order. I really like their fresh taiyaki - they make it right in front of you, so it's served piping hot. You can also choose from a variety of fillings. The soft serve is delicious (and lactose free!). I enjoy their classic ube and matcha flavors. The most recent time I visited, I tried the sakura berry soft serve, which wasn't my favorite. It had a sickly sweet artificial taste, almost like bubblegum. I'll definitely be coming again but sticking with the classic soft serve flavors.

Matcha and sakura berry swirl with an upside-down ahboong and custard filling

Came on a hot Sunday around 2pm and SomiSomi was packed. It's located in a large food plaza with plenty of parking thanks to nearby garages. The shop itself is pretty small and more of a grab-and-go spot, but there's outdoor seating close by. I have not had SomiSomi in a really long time, and I really liked that they rotate their flavors. I ordered: -Matcha and sakura berry swirl with an upside-down ahboong and custard filling: soft serve was smooth and creamy. The matcha was solid, not too bitter with a nice level of sweetness. The standout for me was the sakura berry. It wasn't overly floral and blended really well with the strawberry flavor. I usually don't go for floral desserts, but I'd definitely get this one again. 5/5. Service was friendly, and they were clearly working hard to keep up with the crowd. Even with how busy it was, my wait was about 10-15 minutes, which felt reasonable. All in all, a solid dessert stop with unique flavors that make it worth coming back to try more.

This place always satisfies, and impresses out of town visitors. It's fun to see what new swirl choices are available each week. The line moves quickly. Dessert is always hot, fresh, and can be paired with some sweet or savory options. It's not a shocker why teens flock to this cheap spot.

Had a taiyaki ice cream. It's colocated with another snack joint. Ambiance is a bit limited given the small size of the joint. Service pretty quick considering that the menu is contained by design.

    Taiyaki with Nutella filling

Was looking for some dessert and saw this place. We got the soft serve ice cream in a cup - cookies and cream with sprinkles. Also decided to try the taiyaki -which are fish shaped pancakes with filling. - we chose to have Nutella and custard. They were made to order so there's a bit of a wait. The Taiyaki with Nutella was delicious - crisp on the outside and oozing with Nutella on the inside. We also had one with custard filling. The flavor of the custard was a bit disappointing in comparison to the Nutella. There's also other filling choices like red bean, matcha and a few others I can't remember. The choice of ice cream also came with a hollowed out Taiyaki on top. Really cool idea. There are tables outside to sit on a nice day. The staff at Somi Somi were friendly. Would come back again to try other flavors. And take more pictures!

You know banana matcha hates to see me coming! When I found out this was their swirl of the week, I didn't think twice. Parking was surprisingly easy on a Wednesday night, the line was also not long at all. The girl working hadn't tried the swirl, but she was able to provide her recommendation for the banana pudding flavor and it was helpful. If I worked here I would be trying everything. I appreciate that they tell you what has lactase so you know when to pop your Lactaid. On to the flavor, we ordered banana pudding and matcha swirl, ofc. I just got a few Biscoff crumbles on top and that was soooo good. My partner got Oreo and biscoff crumbles with a Nutella filled Taiyaki. The matcha really compliments the sweet banana pudding. However I do wish the banana flavor was less artificial. It reminded me of banana Laffy Taffy. No seating inside, but plenty of pet-friendly tables outside!

    Cold brew
    Aswad K.

Crispy waffles with sufficient filling. The cold brew tasted amazing- good coffee, not burnt, made with medium roast coffee served in glass bottles. This is our 5th visit and was consistent every time. Rush gets crazy after 8 pm but they are fast and efficient.

Matcha soft serve in a cup + matcha ahboong in a cup

This Somisomi review is long overdue. Been frequenting this spot for Asian ice cream since the first time they've opened. Nowadays, I'm not the biggest ice cream person, however, last month, I had the hugest craving for matcha soft serve and they did not disappoint! My favorite thing is that they're not too sweet, so it's perfect for an Asian sweet treat. I got an upside down Ahboong with a matcha custard + matcha soft serve and extra matcha powder on top. Soooooo fire. Definitely hit the spot. I give this last experience an 8.5/10. Matcha on matcha on matcha. I also love how their soft serve is lactose intolerant-friendly. Thanks for saving my stomach LOL. The vibes inside the store are cool, very much set up takeout, with outdoor seating. Overall, definitely will come back if I ever have another crazy matcha soft serve craving.

Line on a Sunday at 2:30
    Kristina K.

I came on a Sunday around 2:30 and Ommgg the line was out the door and continued to be out the door and even longer when I left!! The total wait was about 20 minutes. There is only one employee and he was huffin it!! If they had another employee it would be so helpful! I got the banana pudding and matcha swirl with custard in my little fish with coconut flakes on top and it was soo soo good!!! There is no seating, just a counter. I want to get the banana pudding again before it leaves!

Upside Down Ahboong (Ube with Custard Filling)
    Warren K.

I really like the upside down ahboong which has a filled Taiyaki placed on top of your soft serve. On the day that we came, they offered 4 different flavors (Cookies n Cream, Matcha, Ube and Banana Pudding) and 2 swirls (Cookes n Cream + Matcha, Ube + Banana Pudding). They used to offer a Black Sesame flavor which I liked a lot and hope that they'll bring back next time I come, but I ended up choosing the plain Ube flavor. For fillings, my go to is always either Custard or Red Bean. The combination of having soft serve and then following with a bite of taiyaki is so amazing. Somisomi is definitely one of my go to dessert spots and I would highly recommend you try it if you haven't yet!

Ube soft serve with oreo and macaroon
    Jen C.

I came pretty late at night after craving dessert after dinner. It was surprisingly still pretty busy inside. The interior is very bright and welcoming, but there is no seating. I got the Ube soft serve topped with Oreos and a macaroon. It was "not too sweet" and very delicious. Overall, I had a great experience and will be back for more!

Matcha and cookies & cream but look how short they gave us vs. the picture on the poster

We went on Friday 6/26/2026 at 3:40 pm and the guy with curly hair working had no interest in welcoming us to the store or asking us what we wanted. When we did get out ice cream, we went outside and came back a few minutes later with nobody at the front desk. We made eye contact with the same guy who was at the back and he just went back to doing whatever he was doing without saying he'd be out in a minute or anything like that. More customers came and we just stood there wondering if anyone is going to help us. Eventually he came out and didn't apologize at all and just took orders reluctantly. Now the ice cream itself - he gave us such a TINY amount. I took a picture to show what somisomi advertised on the poster vs the pitiful short little squirt we got. Like three swirls short of the picture! You can see we haven't eaten off the top because our matcha powder topping is still there. We really got it this short. Unbelievable. We are not the type to be confrontational about getting more and felt weird asking for more. But we for sure wanted people to be warned. This guy needs major re-training or people will stop coming to this location entirely.

Who can I talk to about poor customer service?

Hi H.K., We would like to extend our sincerest apologies.…

Can you get taiyaki with cream cheese only?

Hello Maika, Thank you for reaching out to us and your interest in our taiyaki product.…

Do they accept cash? Or do they only allow paying through cards or online?

We just went and they did not accept cash. Is this new?

Can you get different fillings when you order the taiyakis?

    Yes

Do you think they do fundraisers? I emailed them too but was wondering if any of you guys knew? :)

Not sure. Call them and ask. It doesn't hurt to ask.

    Is there vegan options?

    Yes

Does the Taiyaki have egg in the ingredients?

    It does

Do you have to get your fish filled?

No, you can request no filling.

Are they open on July 4?

    Yes....

Ate the cones made with almond flour? Does it contain nuts?

    almond is a nut.

How much is the taiyaki filling?

The taiyaki with filling goes 2 taiyakis for $3.95 and 5 for $7.95. No extra charge for filling and the taiyaki on the top of ice cream also comes with a filling if you'd like with no additional cost.

What's the difference between somisomi and uji time?

Uji Time is a Japanese company that has an icier soft cream texture. Their flavors are matcha, black sesame, tofu, and seasonal. SomiSomi is a Korean brand with creamier ice cream and they call their fish shaped taiyakis "ah boong". Their flavors…

    How long is the wait?

Depends on the day and time you go of course. We went a couple weeks ago and it was a weekday around 5:00 PM and we waited around 30 minutes.

    What is the best filling?

If you try out the basic mochi Taiyaki with no ice cream, consider getting cheddar. They add two cubes of cheese and it tastes like a grilled cheese sandwich! Nice savory change.

    What is a good topping?

Nothing' just get strawberry! Sometimes the toppings can b stale

Are they ever going to have the milk tea or strawberry soft serve flavor?

    not sure

Are they planning to have the infamous sesame flavor that everyone loves like in San Diego location?

They have black sesame, but it isn't in constant rotation. Each week they pick a different couple of flavors and flavor combos.

    Is the soft serve lactose-free?

There was a sign that said they were lactose-free!

    Any vegan options?

Unfortunately, there's no vegan options at this time. Except the milk flavor, all soft serve is lactose-free but not dairy-free.

Are they going to open up the Sul&Beans?

Eventually! They're definitely still working on it, but the sign is up so I'm hoping this summer will be the grand opening!!

However, after ruminating on…read morethe experience once we arrived home, several concerns became clear that ultimately deterred me from returning. Pricing was not straightforward or transparent. Upon arriving, we were told that all the rooms were booked and no follow up questions from their end. This remained the same throughout the entirety of the communication. I had to inquire all the questions, thinking I was asking the right ones to know prices and availability. I was wrong. With my questions, the answers I received were: 1) small room would take about 1 hour and 2) medium room would be about 40-45 minutes. Again, no follow up question from them whether which room we want, offering prices for each room, and asking if we wanted to put our name down. I only asked if the medium price would be the same as small, since we only had 2 people. That's something I should have reworded because what I actually wanted to know is how much would it be for 2 people--this was after 9:30 PM, for a medium room. I want to highlight that even though I am responsible for inquiries for clarification, a general rule also uniformly applies for businesses to be upfront with pricing and services for clarification. In short, that was completely absent throughout the interaction. We didn't know better, since we are not usuals at this establishment, which truly did feel that this was intentionally done to upcharge us. At the time, we chose convenience and said we would take whichever room--small or medium, as they stated--became available first. The medium room became available about 15 minutes after we had returned earlier to ask how to get on the "waitlist." Yet again, the process itself was never explained nor openly offered to us. We were informed of the $99/hour charge for the medium room only after being called up to the front desk/food station area, when the staff member was already writing the price on the receipt with a clipboard. This key detail should have been clearly disclosed at the very beginning of the first interaction--way before the signing at the desk to enter the room. My previous paragraphs can be referenced to this. Instead, signing and entering the room was processed as both the very first and final contact/confirmation. Thus, we weren't given any pricing and details prior until our name was called and came to the desk to sign. That is the primary issue: not disclosing the needed information well in advance until signing. Also, to their other review response --if there were management, then it could be with the person overseeing the computer, whom I directed the questions to. Like other reviewers have mentioned (which, in hindsight, we should have read more closely), there was a noticeable lack of transparency. We essentially had to ask every question ourselves in order to get basic information. Even then, the responses were brief and only addressed exactly what we asked--without offering additional context or details that would have helped us fully understand the pricing or process. And that in itself--is dishonest. Deceptive, too. Because of the lack of intent and transparency, we also weren't offered pricing information with the small room at any given point. So for those who wish to visit this establishment, be mindful of the highly, subtle deception. Perhaps you could try and ask directly for the pricing of each room, depending on head count, but who knows if they would provide information in all the extent needed for customers to make an informed decision. The medium room could fit 6-8 people maximum from our perception. The pricing on the website does not provide any room sizing price, or estimation. Just by head count, so essentially, we were being charged for the 9-10 people ($99/hr rate) that is listed on the webpage. Yes, here's the fine print from the website: "RATES & ROOM CAPACITY: The final rate will be based on either room size or total number of people, with the higher rate applied." If the $99/hr charge was purely due to the medium room size, as it did note that a "higher rate may apply," then that would have been understandable--if that information had been deliberately shared to us well in advance before signing. Even then, it becomes much more questionable since it seems that 6-8 people ($79/hr) could be accommodated in a medium size room. If so, then this was an upcharge, given all information had been nebulous. However, the issue I am pointing out here is the extreme lack of transparency and the involuntary manner in how the information was provided before signing. The general answers mentioned above were disclosed only when prompted by our questions, and even then the responses remained consistently evasive and limited. The quote above was already included in this original post. Read the latest response to see how they confirmed their own fradulence. Never was offered a large yet was given one and upcharged.

Edit: While I appreciate the reply from the business owner, none of these points were communicated…read moreto me or my partner. In spite of multiple reviews warning of the exact same issue regarding predatory pricing, the fact that this continues to be an issue while policy is only clarified in the replies of Yelp business reviews means that there is no serious consideration to review feedback or address our concerns in any meaningful way. If the customer has to make multiple inquiries as to what the pricing structure is without any upfront information such as what the business owner provided, then that policy only exists in fine print as insurance for the business' benefit. This is especially true because in this case, you cannot find what the rate for a room is on their website, and this policy was never communicated at any point of our interaction. I could appreciate the fact that pricing was agreed upon before we signed and went to our room, but that's only because that singular piece of information was never conveyed beforehand and which would have given us the opportunity to make a different decision. Because of this, I actually now recommend people stay away from this establishment and take their money elsewhere. My partner and I had a very unpleasant experience from this place because we were up charged for a room for 8-10 people at the rate of $99/hr, in spite of there being lower rates for smaller groups at ~$70 or even lower (which are available on their website). However, this being our first time, we weren't made aware that there were different pricing tiers and were led to believe that there were only two rates available by room size alone from small to medium. We were told upfront that there would be an hour-long wait for a small room, so we wanted to take the next available room that came up, which was a "medium-sized room." I know we aren't usuals there and therefore a business-decision was probably made to give us the most expensive rate to extract the most value possible from an unsuspecting couple, I found the practice to leave a bad taste. Beware of being given false time estimates and rates by the man who works there. It was disappointing to be taken advantage of in this way, so we advise looking into their rates first before going into this place. I get that we shouldn't have expected to pay the rate for 1-2 people because we chose a bigger room, but it also doesn't justify getting led into paying more simply because we didn't know any better.
