I've been to Somi Somi plenty of times, but this was my first visit to this particular location--and it definitely lived up to my expectations. This location is small and quaint, which I actually liked. When I stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon, there was only one employee working and no other customers in the shop. Despite being solo, the employee was kind, patient, and welcoming while taking our order. The setup is simple--no traditional seating, just long tables lined against the wall--but it works perfectly fine for a quick treat. As always, the soft serve was creamy and delicious. I ordered the matcha and ube swirl in an upside-down Ah-Boong with red bean filling, and it was absolutely amazing. The flavors were rich without being overwhelming, and the texture was smooth and perfectly swirled. It's consistently good every time I visit a Somi Somi, and this location was no exception. They also offer water cups & cold water, have one All Gender restroom available, and carry other options like milk and taiyaki to go. I haven't tried those at this location yet, but based on how consistent the brand is, I'm sure they're just as good as the other locations. Great area, great service, and great soft serve. This is one of my go to dessert places for a sweet treat! The weekend evenings get packed sometimes with groups. I love the Nutella filled and custard filled Taiyaki's! They are made to order, they are so fresh and have a not too sweet and chewy mochi texture with a sort of light crunchy exterior. I'm 1000% sincere when I say that Somisomi might be THE most creative ice cream "experience" in Sacramento (or at minimum tied with Gunther's)! Located adjacent to Sac City College, Somisomi is in the Crocker Village shopping center that's off 24th St and a hair south of 'Curtis Park.' Crocker Village is a newer neighborhood, with freshly built "Brooklyn-style" homes and a plethora of cool food, coffee, and smoothie spots. This review is not detailing my first time at Somisomi, but rather my first time visiting as Yelp Elite! Depending on what time you arrive parking could be competitive out front. However there are plenty of spaces if you're willing to walk a little. This past Saturday night my wife and I were craving something sweet and decided to head down to Somisomi at around 9pm. Sac City College was finishing up a football game (we think?) so the line was out the door. However, the line moved quickly and eventually it was our turn to order. Ordering at Somisomi requires three steps: 1. Choose an ice cream "style." 2. Choose a soft style flavor. 3. Pick a filling for your Ahboong (fish shaped waffle cone). I went with an "upside-down Ahboong" for my "style," matcha-ube swirl for my ice cream flavor, and nutella for my Ahboong filling. My wife did the exact same but chose black sesame for her filling. What blows my mind is that Somisomi is RIDICULOUSLY affordable. At only $6 and change it's a STEAL for how creative, spontaneous, and lively it is getting the Somisomi experience! It's further proof that restaurants have a choice when it comes to how they price their menu items. Obviously there a million factors that go into pricing, and anyone who follows my reviews knows I'm not cheap nor am a "Karen." But it's refreshing when businesses are able to figure it out and provide fantastic food without ripping off the consumer. And Somisomi is rewarded for it!! As I mentioned before the line to this place was OUT THE DOOR. In addition, what's incredibly unique about Somisomi is getting a front row view of how they make their Ahboongs and ice cream creations. Similar to somewhere like Chipotle or Subway you can see up-close thru plexiglass how each order is made! And you can see the attention to detail each ice cream "creation" is met with! Staff are absolutely fabulous! From the cashier to the staffmembers who made our ice cream there is a level of care and pride in what they do that makes you want to keep coming back! And when I say each Taiyaki ice cream they create looks like artwork I am not exaggerating! A staffmember will call your name when it is your turn to pick up your ice cream. They'll ask you if you want toppings like cap'n crunch, fruity pebbles, and more. You also get the choice of a strawberry or macaron. They were out of strawberries so we went with macarons. You have to experience it yourself, but the waffle cone mixed with the ube-matcha ice cream and Nutella just hit DIFFERENTLY. I savored each bite and was genuinely sad when my ice cream was over (lol). I know Fall is approaching but I don't get how I've slept on this place for so long. Saturday was the first time I'd been here in two or so years! In a nutshell Somisomi is incredibly unique, reasonably priced, and fun for all ages (we saw teenagers, families with kids, and seniors there). 6/5 stars!! Ice cream flavors rotate weekly! If you want strictly taiyaki (filled waffles), you can purchase them in quantities of 2 or 5, and filling options are red bean, nutella, custard, taro, cheddar, or Oreo. Sometimes they have featured fillings like mint Oreo or chestnut. If you want ice cream, you can get the soft serve by itself in a cup, as an ahboong with an open-mouthed taiyaki as the cone, or as an upside-down in a cup, topped with the taiyaki. Check their social media page (@somisomiicecream on IG) for Swirls of the Week flavors. Right now, from May 10-16, this Sacramento location is serving up Milk & Ube, Matcha & Horchata, and Cookies 'n Cream & Black Sesame. If you don't like these specific swirl combos, you can get individual flavors alone too. They also have strawberry milk and cold brew floats! This visit I got the Matcha + Horchata swirl as an upside down, with a Nutella-filled taiyaki, matcha powder, graham cracker powder, Cocoa Pebbles and a strawberry. This place hits every single time. My only disdain is they DO NOT OFFER SAMPLES OF THE SOFT SERVE. Why? The world may never know. Like many reviewers already stated a lot of the soft serve options are lactose free, and the Taiyaki is always fresh and warm. Any filling you choose always oozes when you squeeze it. It's not very hard and crispy like a waffle cone, but more like a soft crepe pancake. They have flavors change all the time, personal favorite has always been the cookies and cream or "milk" flavor - which is basically a creamy vanilla. However as I stated you can't sample the soft serves. PLEASE CHANGE THIS. Twice now I got a flavor I didn't love and couldn't finish eating. Last time I was there I tried the banana milk which sounded so yummy! And it was. But i didn't love it enough to finish my cup. So I recommend staying on the safe side and only selecting a flavor you are positive you will love. Service is always friendly and eager to make your day with a sweet treat. When you are waiting for your order be sure to check out the toppings that you can select to put on top, they ask you this AFTER you order so don't freak if you didn't mention it before hand. SomiSomi is one of my favorite places to go after visiting Japan! I love the Taiyaki because they are made fresh as you order them. This is the same way that the street vendors in Japan make Taiyakis. SomiSomi has the traditional fillings like red bean, taro, and custard. They also have some fun ones: nutella, oreo, and cheddar (for people, who like different options). If you don't go for the Taiyaki, they also have a lots of other options: the viral soft serve with the fish cone of top, cold brew floats, and real strawberry milk. The Soft Serve Taiyaki cone is cute for the instagram, but it is not my personal favorite compared to all of their traditional Taiyaki offerings.
