Food is good but service is awful! I had gone a few times with friends and told my husband several times I wanted him to go check it out. A friend (and previous coworker) was playing in a band so my husband said he'd go. We get there and are told there's a 5-10 minute wait so we went to the bar area. We stood at the end of the bar and a regular customer showed up and it was obvious he was annoyed we were in his area. He made a gesture to the manager reflecting his annoyance. After a 10 minute wait, I asked the greeter if we could sit at an empty table close by the music to watch our friend sing. We were told they needed to check with the server for that area cause they were busy. They ended up sitting us in the back area by the wall far away from music area and lo and behold, the same server that tended to us was also tending to the people that were now sitting at that table that was empty earlier. Came in on a surprisingly non - busy Sunday afternoon. I was craving fried chicken all day but none of the frozen crap in most places and Sonder was the only place my girlfriend wanted to go. Experience: Service was a bit non-attentive. Waitress would periodically check in but can tell they were spreading her thin and it wasn't that busy. Food: I will not be ordering this again. I've had better experiences with steaks and burgers here but this fried chicken was a complete let down. I ordered the spicy version and the only difference was the spicy seasoning added after frying. Most places with let the chicken marinate in buttermilk and spice as you would expect in traditional fried chicken restaurants. Standard biscuit that was okay and the butter mixed with honey saved my meal. No salt on the table for my full mashed potatoes. I don't think I'd be visiting this place again anytime soon. That's it! This place is the epiphany of a cluster f... they claim to open until 10:00 pm on the weekdays. But we called on our way to make sure they were still serving because they're notorious for closing whenever they feel like it. We walked in at 8:30, waited at the door for 11 mins and no one acknowledge our presence. Then, we asked the busboy if they were still seating, and he told us to grad any table. So we took a table right in the middle of the restaurant and ended up waiting another 12 mins with no one paying attention to us what so ever. It was fairly busy, but not crazy busy. It took and additional hour to get our food. We got a lot, and all of it was cold and not tasty. We complained to our waitress that our halibut was inedible, cold, overcooked. She didn't offer any resolution, take it off of the bill, ask if my husband wanted something in its place (though I doubt he wold have, as the time was forever). I've been sleeping on Sonder. It's not like I've never been told about this place. It's close by, I even had a friend work there till recently! I dont know, I just never came here till now. Not only is the food pretty, but its also delicious. You have choices of your elevated Americana food: mac n cheese, burgers and so on. But they also have Cubano sandwiches and poutine. The menu is diverse but minimal, they make a point to keep it fairly simple. Decor wise is also great, lovely dark blues inside. The patio is also great for those October lunch dates. Food prices are higher but not bad. Expect about $30 per person for a full entree and drink. Expect decadence with their food. Most of it is hardy, rich and doesnt play. They also have a bar, my personal favorite boozy drink it the Crowd Pleaser, because it does just that. They also have happy hour and no one can go wrong with that. read more

Honestly we had a big party of 20-25ish on the patio and would be hard for any seasoned server to handle. The women and men who served us did it brilliantly. I had the avocado toast, espresso martini, plus some wine, absolutely delicious. Marissa was our server and she was sweet, happy, and spot on with all of us, we had another couple servers helping and they were equally amazing (I didn't catch their names). I would suggest anyone to have a party or event there (the patio is super fun). One of the easiest and best services I've had with that big of a group in Bakersfield. We had not been to Sonder in a few years because it had essentially just fallen off our radar. My hubby and I decided to stop by for a drink after a long day. The lively crowd and friendly vibe drew us in and we ended up ordering dinner and dessert and planning our next visit. The decor has been updated since we were there last with tables and booths spread out nicely. There were several large parties, along with a mixture of smaller groups and parties of two. There was a good mix of music playing but it was at the perfect setting so you could still converse easily. While the menu is not extensive, it does seem to have something for everyone. I chose an appetizer (bruschetta board) as my main course while my hubby chose a sandwich (French dip). Everything was delicious. We even shared a dessert although we were pretty stuffed. Try the Crème Brûlée it is totally worth it. The drink menu has some enticing specialty cocktails and the wine menu listed several of our favorites. We made reservations online, showed up thirty minutes early and was greeted by a really nice young man who showed us to our table. The waitress was very nice and attentive. There was live music who played some songs that I silently sang along at my table. For dinner my wife ordered the beef stroganoff and I ordered two appetizers (Brussels sprouts and a half order of lemon pepper wings). My wife enjoyed her dinner and I thoroughly enjoyed the Brussels sprouts and wings. These wings were huge! I could only eat three pieces and half of the Brussels sprouts and I was stuffed! This was my second time dining at Sonder. The first time I came was about a year and a half ago when they had a very limited menu. I didn't have high expectations for the options available because of this and I ended up being extremely surprised by the vast variety of food offered. Sadly, the Sonder mimosa was unavailable the day we dined here. I asked if they could make a peach Bellini for me and they made me one with peach purée. This was delicious! I didn't miss the raspberry sorbet one bit. The monkey bread was delicious and perfect for sharing if you want a sweet bite with your meals. The avocado toast with lox was delicious but extremely small. Next time I will probably get two slices of avocado toast because regardless the ingredients used were very fresh. There was no instruction as to what food was where. My husband went to sample the desserts, and he returned with a story of more flies in the puddin! Last year was better! Road tripping again from SJ to Vegas on an empty stomach brought us here on Friday night about 7p (actually, the pic on Yelp of the Poutine sold us so we bee lined straight here without reading any info on Sonder). Too warm outside despite the misters on the patio, we opted to seat in as we just needed a quick bite before getting back on the road. Pleasantly surprised upon entering, ambient (break out your cell phone light to read the menu) lighting, some comfy couch seating in several areas, love the modern farmhouse casual decor. It appeared to be casual date night or Friday night drinks with friends for just about everyone there except us. If I didn't have to drive I'd enjoy a glass of wine like everyone else. The Poutine pic sold the hubs so he ordered that and the patty melt that came with fries (patty melt on the road in Bakersfield is a theme I'm gonna have to break him of). I ordered the Caprese sandwich added avocado & chicken, chose the Mac n cheese for the side (apparently trying the Mac n cheese at different restaurants is my thing). The Poutine is a show stopper - OMG!!! The beef gravy with the tender flavorful beef and the gooey cheese and scallions over fries = heaven!!! The rest of our meal was forgettable in comparison! Patty melt - nothing special. The fries were seasoned and larger, overall better than most restaurants. My Caprese was good, although the bread was soggy and it was messy, difficult to eat without making a bigger mess, and the chicken was surprisingly tough. I didn't care for the Mac n cheese as the pasta was slightly undercooked and lacked that super-cheesy flavor I personally prefer. Service was good considering it was everyone's Friday night out and pretty busy. It was pretty loud inside, mostly due to other patrons enjoying their night. We will definitely make it back to order the Poutine again (2 orders!) - I want to try the Ribeye (that's my thing too LOL) & the brownie desert was calling the hubs, but he was too full. Had a great time at Sonder on a Wednesday night. The patio is quite large and the tables are spaced decently apart. And all the servers were wearing face masks. They also have ceiling fans for increased ventilation, and water misters to keep things cool. It was quite busy when we went, so I can only imagine how it gets on weekends, you'll probably need to call ahead. We started with the brussels sprouts, which were better than I expected. The vinegar/aioli combination really complements the brussels sprouts, and the crispy pieces are so good. We also got the sonder fried chicken, which my partner enjoyed since it was quite tender. But I thought it was a little boring, and would have been better with a sauce or sauces. I liked the cornbread, but the slaw was bland. I realized later that we were missing the honey butter - wonder if that would have been good? We also got the sonder burger, which I loved! I love a good burger, and this one was juicy and flavorful. I really liked the sauce they put on it, and the crispy beer battered fries. Would definitely order it again! Overall, I would definitely come back and try a few other things like the bruschetta or buratta or maybe for the brunch. They also have a happy hour from 3-6pm with $8 cocktails. read more

We went there for my sisters birthday back in May and I first off want to say it is SO cute! Very aesthetically pleasing! Sonder was one of our favorite restaurants. However after our last 2 visits, we have decided to take a break. We took our out of town guest for dinner around 1/2/24 and the service was horrible. Needless to say, we were embarrassed. The cocktails were late and delivered with the food. My margarita was a Lemon Drop. I brought it to the server's attention and she brought out another drink, not a Margarita! She did not remove the wrong drink from our bill; until I brought it to her attention. Walking into Sonder is like you're transported into another place, because it definitely looks like a strip mall on the outside and a chic, more intimate and upscale yet inviting place on the inside. The decoration was awesome. We went at night and the lighting was really fun, which set a very romantic mood but was also really hard to read the menu where we were located due to a lack of lighting. We ordered our drinks and got poutine as an appetizer. The poutine was DELICIOUS! This was the highlight of my meal experience here. The fries are the perfect consistency. I ordered the burger with the buffalo bacon mac on top. I really didn't like the shape of pasta for being in a burger because it slid off easily and made the burger really thicker to bite into. The mac itself also just lacked any cheesiness in my opinion and the buffalo sauce on it was not very flavorful or present either. The concept of having 2 4 oz patties was really just a mess because they were sliding around and it was way harder to eat than a burger with 1 patty. However, my boyfriend had the Sonder burger and he LOVED his burger. He said the house mustard type sauce was really flavorful and he also loved the fries. Our friend dining with us had the carbonara, which he said he liked the portion size and the flavors of it. He did try a coconut rye dark beer on the suggestion of our waiter and loved it though, so that was a high mark as well. Overall, this is the kind of place I would go if I want to hang out with someone for awhile. It wasn't that busy but it felt like everyone there (staff and patrons alike) were really into hanging out and go at a much slower pace. When I dine out I usually like to have the option to get going as soon as possible and not waste any time unless maybe I'm seated at the bar area. This is a place I would recommend to come with either a big group because seating was so easy for that and you have the time to chat, or maybe a nice place to take someone special on a date due to the ambiance and variety of food offered. I don't really see myself coming here on a regular basis based on speed of service and overall satisfaction with my own plate flavors for the price. You don't have to battle the breakfast rush or wait forever for a table. The food was delicious, I had salmon and lox avocado toast and goat cheese avocado toast. My fiancé had the bako scramble with potatoes. The avocado was soft and fresh and the salmon had a good amount of smokiness. They also have a really good cup of coffee. This place was AMAZING!! We made reservations for Sunday Brunch ( I saw they had Bottomless Mimosas). We walked, and the hostess was super energetic ( I love that) she sat us right away at our table! We were promptly greeted by our server/waitress named Alyssa! She was vibes from the start! We started with our drinks R.B.F (which was champaign and some yumminess) and Mimosa. I ordered the poutine and a margarita. The margarita came out promptly and I was truly satisfied with its size and taste. It was also happy hour. Enough said. The poutine is a rather large serving but for approximately $14 USD I thought it was fair. The fries were great however I longed for more gravy. I'm obsessed! Their seasonal food and drinks menus are always delicious and so unique! The restaurant is gorgeous! Beautiful details from the seating, the outdoor space, and even the restrooms! I love it all! I have tried so many menu items (both brunch and regular menus) and haven't had anything I didn't absolutely enjoy. The food is delicately prepared and plated, making the entire eating experience a great one from beginning to end. One of my favorite parts is their drinks menu. They have some classics, usually include their own twist to them, but they also have some really fun creations as well! Cheers to a fun and delicious drink menu!
