Out of smoked wings.. ...... Place seems busy that's always a good thing because its not a new place. We will have to see how the food is. My pork sandwich was 3/4 great and about a 1/4of it was very tough. You can look at the pic I posted and it even looked dry. My friend said I should have sent it back but I hate sending food back to be remade who knows how the chef will fell about sending his food back. Baked beans was the best I have ever had. A lot better than Bono's. The pork egg roles were not to my liking because they were fresh made but the filling had coleslaw in them. I just don't like coleslaw. I've lived and worked on the Westside of Jacksonville for 30+ years and the Sonny's on Lane has always been my favorite bbq restaurant. The service and food was always excellent, however.... I have complaints on the last few visits. I thought maybe it was just a bad night, but after 5 disappointing visits in the last few months, I feel it's time to speak up. The first two visits were through the drive thru. Both visits were missing food items that were ordered and paid for and not discovered until I got home. Then, my husband and I decided to try going inside to have a sit-down meal. The first trip, we had to wait a while to be seated. Once seated, the waitress was nowhere to be found. We noticed there were only two waitresses on the floor and the place was busy. When we finally ordered and got our food, the food just wasn't as good as it used to be. The brisket was dry and the fries were cold. The next inside visit, I ordered a bbq salad. I asked for chopped pork and was told they were out. It was 4:30 in the afternoon and not that busy. I then chose chicken, thinking I would get bbq chicken chopped. When it arrived, it had fried chicken that was overcooked, corn on the bottom, a pile of fried onions covering the entire top and sweet bbq sauce drizzled over the top. It was horrible. The last bbq salad I had there was a fresh garden salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, shredded cheese and croutons. When did this change?? Our last inside visit was last night and the worst. We were seated quickly, but there were only two other customers there. The waitress took our orders. I clearly asked for a large brisket sandwich and fries (pointing to the large sandwich on the menu and pointing to the fries in the picture). I then asked to upgrade the meal to include an extra side of cole slaw and drink for an additional $4.00, again pointing to the menu. When the food came, they brought a small brisket sandwich and no fries and coleslaw. I asked her if that was the small or large sandwich and she said she wasn't sure (really?). I then asked where were the fries, and she said I ordered coleslaw. I told here I ordered both fries and coleslaw and pointed to the picture. She said the fries are not included and that the picture on the menu was misleading. My husband ordered the 3 meat dinner. The picture again showed 4 ribs on the menu. He received 3. Plus, both my brisket and his brisket was overcooked and dry. Also, the chicken on his plate was tiny like it was from a cornish hen. Then when it was time to check out, we were charged for 3 drinks instead of 2. Needless to say, we are now looking for another bbq place to go to. Sonny's on Lane has been too disappointing and with the price of everything sky high these days, the price of our dining out meals have to be worth it. read more

I do not like this location I am really big on customer service I called to place an order. Put on hold for 15 minutes by then I was already there so I walk in I wait for another 10 minutes for someone to ask me if I need something when I've been standing at the place your order part then come to find out it's not just an extra $2 for fries and a drink to add to a big deal it is now $3 just for a stupid fry so needless to say I am taking my business elsewhere & only way I will order is if I'm dining in because tryin to get a takeout order is just a complete hassle and now prices have went up from $2.00 to add fry and drink to big deal and is now 3$ Just to add a fry if it was fry and drink for $3 I wouldn't mind but when you're getting a combo charging $3 for fries and two or three dollars for a drink now the meal has went up three times the price so no wonder why they are going out of business keep your prices or you will continue to lose business like mine read more

I've been going to this Sonny's location for many years. My mouth just now started watering because it heard my brain think "Sonny's." Damn! Now I'm drooling! Wait a second and let me get a paper napkin to wipe my mouth... That's better. OK, so here's the deal. I like chicken. Not a big fan of pork or ribs. Give me some white chicken meat, and I'm happy as can be. However, that white chicken meat had better be JUICY! The problem with many of the other BBQ places in this area is that they serve dehydrated chicken! Maybe they serve Astronaut chicken from NASA? (I'm looking at YOU, Woody's BBQ!). But not at Sonny's! Their chicken is super-moist! Perhaps they excite their chickens before slaughtering? I dunno! But they're damn juicy! And this is critical for a good BBQ chicken experience, in my opinion. One thing that I don't understand is why I LOVE their mustard BBQ. I HATE the taste of mustard (I use ketchup on my soft pretzels and people look at me funny...but I refuse to use mustard). But, I can't get enough of Sonny's mustard BBQ sauce! There have been a few times when I convinced my elderly mother to sneak the mustard BBQ squirt-bottle into her purse so that we can enjoy it at home! OK, for legal reasons I'm "kidding" about using my mom as a BBQ sauce mule. But, I DO buy their mustard sauce in bottles at the register. It is just SOOOOOOO good! They did recently change their green beans, which I'm not happy about. Their green beans used to be French-cut with bits of ham and onion mixed in. I LOVED those beans! Now, the beans are more garden-variety (ha!). Sonny's - bring back the old green beans, and I'll give you six stars! I also like their garlic toast. They used to give two slices of toast with their 1/4 BBQ chicken meals (which is only on the lunch menu, but they'll serve it to you for dinner if you ask). Now, they only give one slice. BUT, if you ask nicely for two slices, you'll get them and won't be charged for the extra slice! Pour some of that mustard BBQ on those slices of garlic toast, and you'll experience a tiny slice of southern Heaven! The service is always excellent, and the drink portions are HUGE. The staff know me well enough now to always bring me a "to go" cup of unsweetened tea just as I finish my meal. I enjoy drinking this on the drive home. I can't recommend Sonny's highly enough! read more

On my first trip to visit my husband's hometown, I asked him to take me somewhere "Southern". His knee jerk response was "Sonny's". It is my first BBQ dining experience in the South and being born and raised in Hawaii, I really have no frame of reference. That being said, portions were huge, prices were cheap, and food was tasty. I did a very un-southern thing and ordered my iced tea unsweetened which came in a bottomless ginormous glass. We enter entered the restaurant and saw that the place was not busy at all but we waited 15 minutes to be seated. Our server was very nice but got our order 100% wrong. We ordered the "famous" ribs that were brought to the table and tasted like rawhide. This was the second time we had bad service and cold food at this Sonny's. The second time we were waiting for 20 minutes for our food and my husband order was not edible. The meat was stone cold, baked sweet potato and fries were lukewarm when brought to the table. My meat was lukewarm as well. My husband asked to speak to a manager, and it took about 20 minutes for one to come to our table. The manager didn't really care that the food was stone cold and didn't apologize for it just said she can take it off our bill. No customer service, courteous or professionalism whatsoever. We will not be going back to this Sonny's location (Lane Ave, Jacksonville, FL). They also had no turkey available, and nothing was on the menu to state this. The waitress told us after I ask if turkey was available for the Pick 2 and she than stated it wasn't available and they wouldn't have any until June 2023. Every one of our entrees had to be returned due to the internal being cool to the touch. The fries were hard and chewy, and the wings had very little taste outside of having to submerge in ranch and BBQ sauce to add taste. Did pick up service on 4/18/21. As your prices rise the quality continues to drop. Two sides of beans were only filled halfway, I got half cooked corn instead of the beans I ordered. November 22, 2018 was the worst customer service experience my family and I have ever had in our lives that ended with us leaving shortly after Sabrina took our drink orders and immediately asked if we wanted our drinks in a to go cup. I am a little slow on the uptake so, the insult didn't immediately register with me but it did with the older members of my family of 12 in attendance. We frequent this location FREQUENTLY and have always received great service from Royce, needless to say Royce has left for the evening and to our disgust we ended up with Sabrina. Ordered online the other night. Experience was pretty good online, it said it would be ready at 6:32 pm. We arrived at 6:33 pm texted & said here & our parking spot number like it asked us to. After watching people at the drive through go through & get there food that got there after we arrived was pretty worrisome. We watched 3-4 people go through the drive through & another person that pulled in 10 minutes after we did get there food. My wife walked inside to see what was happening & low & behold our food was sitting on the counter & had been for a while. Girl at counter said they're not always notified when online orders are brought up. Not a good excuse if you ask me. Wife even asked the manager if this is how you run a business and he didn't acknowledge her whatsoever. We will be going elsewhere for our BBQ. Gators, Bono's, & Williards are all better anyway. This isn't our first time experiencing this either but tried one last time. Never again! read more

Gave them another shot, they've improved their initial all you can eat ribs drastically by giving you meatier ribs out the door and only sending scraggly dry bits when you want to take advantage of the "all you can eat" part. Sonny's has always been one of my favorites, with their fast service, huge glasses of tea and casual atmosphere. Usually the garlic bread lacks flavor, but the last time I went, it had plenty of flavor. The babybacks are my favorite, but you can actually get a really tasty, grilled burger here as well. Today was the worst meal here. We normally love Sonny's and eat at all of them at least once a week. We went late last week and noticed they ran out of the spicy sausage which I like. Today we went there when they opened thinking all the food would be fresh. The fries were cold, macaroni was cold, the ribs were tough and seemed like they were yesterdays meat. the pulled pork was cold and also seemed old. I asked the waitress if the food was yesterdays left overs or fresh and of course she said fresh. We have always loved sonny's but today has turned us off and we will probably not return for a couple of months. Really believe the food was yesterdays left overs. My family and I are dismayed, upset, angry, disgusted and appalled at what happened during a family outing to Sonny's BBQ restaurant on Lane Avenue and this is a warning to anyone who might consider eating there. When we received our food, my husband opened his pork sandwich to put BBQ sauce on it. When he flipped it over to put sauce on the bottom of the sandwich there was a raw, ice cold piece of chicken skin on it. Talk about being grossed out! Our waitress was shocked and got the manager. He initially said it was cooked chicken and then he realized it wasn't. It's bad enough that this happened, but it's what happened afterwards that blew us away! The manager never came back to our table so my husband went up to the cash register where the manager was to ask what was going on. He stated he was comping our meal, no explanation for what happened and no apology. What happened next was indescribable- the kitchen staff and 2 waitresses (not ours) were observed laughing and taunting my husband holding up raw chicken behind his back. Can you imagine this? The manager says he didn't see this but others did. We sent an email to Sonny's and called the police because of the kitchen staff's behavior - it was clear they thought it was funny and we believe they purposely put raw chicken on his pork sandwich. The police took a report and talked to the manager and owner but nothing happened. In fact the manager had the gall to say that he thought we brought the chicken in with us!!! Are you kidding me???The people who did this were not fired so they are still there and will likely pull one of these stunts again. That's why I'm telling you this - you are forewarned. Eat at Sonny's at your own risk. I can assure you we will NEVER eat there again and neither will anyone in our family. It is such a shame that society has stooped to such lows. These Sonny's cooks are the lowest and the waitresses staff that were laughing us out of the restaurant!!! read more
