Sophia's deserves all the love. I always see the same family working and they're always happy to have you. Their dining room is a little outdated but it's still incredibly charming. I've never seen it more than half full but they have plenty of space. The food is consistently good and my coworkers love to stop here. I had this place 2 days in a row ~ got the Cheeseburger and fries both times . Deliciously made , came out HOT and fresh. This spot has an extremely cozy and intimate atmosphere that I really like . My favorite diner ever in the history of diners closed so we ventured down the street and stumbled upon Sophia's. Greeted by a coca cola sign out front that says, "Lunch deal Gyro, fries & a drink for $7.50 we decided to go in. The atmosphere is dark and dingy with really only one real light being the entrance. The front is long and narrow boasting a giant griddle and a carry out counter. My mom, my bf and I sat in one of the teeny tiny booths and ordered up two burgs and a gryo meal. Maybe being a total greasy spoon type place (MY FAVORITE) my expectations were too high, but my burger was very very thin and over seasoned, which is odd for me because I usually need to add salt, seasoning to everything! The bf's gyro was fine, but nothing to rave about. It was not horrible, but not super fresh right off the spit like other joints I know in the city. It's hard not to compare to other diners, but this locally owned little spot was just okay and a bit overpriced for what it was. I want to go back and try the breakfast to see if I can satisfy that greasy spoon itch I was lookin' for, but for now, it was just OK. read more

I visit Sophia's at least once or twice a month. However, I have never given this place a review...which is a shame on my part. Please allow me to make things right and tell you why I gave it 5 stars. Menu: To be honest, I'm only familiar with their daily/seasonal specials. They usually have these displayed both inside and outside the restaurant. Food: Most of the time, (93%), I order the Gyro combo - Gyro, fries and a drink. The food arrives hot, fresh and really satisfying for the money. I have had other specials, (the fish sandwich and coneys). However, I can't help but to go back to the Gyro combo. It's very good, and for a good price. Atmosphere: I usually get my food to go, but as far as I can tell, the place gets pretty busy. The decor is older than most places I frequent, but it's the comforting type of decor. It makes me feel like I can relax...and this is just at lunch time - carry out. That's amazing! Service: I love the service here. The man who cooks always asks how you are when you enter. Awesome! The two women who work behind the counter are friendly and accurate. Double-Awesome! They even tell you to "take care" or "have a good day" upon leaving. You can tell they're invested in keeping business running smoothly and making customers happy. Trust me, that's a rare thing to find in restaurants now. Summary: The good food, comforting environment and great customer service are what keep me coming back for more. If you work in the area or just happen to be in the area and are looking for some grub, Sophia's is the perfect neighborhood cafe & deli! The people here are sooo sweet, especially Pete, the grill master. He always has a warm smile and makes me feel so welcome, with his witty jokes and hilarious comments. Their homemade soup is my staple go-to, especially on a cold day. They have different daily specials, but when I don't know what to get, I always resort to their Greek salad and egg salad sandwich. I work downtown and I was introduced to this place by a coworker. I love a good gyro and he said this place had "the best gyros in the city!" Expectations were high... And I was not let down! In fact, I eat here several times a month. The owners are your best friends when you walk in the door and you feel like you've know them for years. I stumbled across Sophia's Deli and Restaurant this afternoon, and decided to grab some lunch there. Sophia's is in the 800 block of Main Street downtown and just a few blocks from both the Main Library and Aronoff Center, and it is very good despite its small size. Sophia's appears to have been around for a while and it isn't at all that nice on the inside, at least from a physical standpoint. Within seconds of stepping inside, however, the cook (who I had a feeling was the owner) greeted the two of us, and the service was great too, so I guess it was "nice" from that standpoint. The restaurant seemed a bit old-fashioned and unlike something you would see out in the suburbs. Its kitchen is at the front of the narrow restaurant and there are several booths and tables packed in tightly in the back of the tiny restaurant. My brother and I stopped in during the lunch rush and managed to get the last available table. Although the restaurant was packed, most of the customers didn't look like the business crowd, so perhaps we were seated among regulars/long time Sophia's fans. Sophia's is known for its homemade macaroni and cheese, while its fried fish sandwich and deli sandwiches and salads are also popular. The restaurant also serves soup, burgers, daily specials, and some homemade desserts, which account for most of the other menu items. I ordered the Gyro with fries for $5.95, and that is actually one of the most expensive items on the menu (most items are under $5). It was very good and it didn't take too long for the waitress to bring it, even though they were one worker short today and had just one waitress (who did a great job by the way). Sophia's has a small menu and its small interior is very old and bland-looking, but with its great service, good food, and low prices it is definitely worth checking out if you happen to make it downtown. I was pretty impressed with the restaurant and recommend going there for lunch if you are in the area during the week. read more

Solid 5-star sandwich place for expectations of a sandwich place. My taco salad was very simple and tasty. Everyone else's food looked really good. I will have to try a burger or gyro next time. It is obviously a place where the owner and the staff work hard to serve you and enjoy seeing you come back. They greeted people whether regulars or not. We stopped in for lunch after searching for restaurants in the area and decided to give Sophia's a try- we are very glad we did! We got the Gyros and not only were they very quick but they were hot & absolutely delicious as well. I didn't have it, but the chocolate cake looked very tasty. All the staff (I presume one of them was Sophia?) were super friendly and welcoming. Discovered this great little diner today for lunch--looks like a bit of dive from the outside, but opens up to a good amount of seating once past the counter and everyone that works there is very friendly. I got one of the daily specials: bleu cheese burger and onion rings ($9) and it was very good. The burger was like one you would make on the grill at home and they added grilled onions on request. White bread bun wasn't anything special, but it held together well enough. The onion rings were fairly thick cut with a crunchy, textured breading, definitely a "worth the calories" splurge. Menu is pretty simple: salads, burgers, deli sandwiches, soups of the day; not as Greek-focused as I was expecting, but there is a gyro on the menu. They have table service for ordering & food delivery and then you pay up front. read more

Thanks again to Yelp for helping me stumble into this quaint little dimly-lit diner. I don't know about you, but when I was a kid...before we had the luxury of Yelp at our fingertips (I'm not looking for sympathy - we had Bill Clinton, Furby's and Saved by the Bell BEFORE they went to college... It was a nice life)...anyways, my family would look for restaurants that had lots of old people and police. My parents' philosophy was that those two demographics knew where to find cheap food where they didn't care if you had a little mud on your boots. I present you with Sophia's as proof that this method still prevails! This is the kind of place where you've got a handful of menu options to choose from and you don't really want to be that guy who asks for anything off the menu (vegetarians beware). It's a place where you can get in and get out, or lounge around all day, reading the newspaper (ahh the 90's). It is definitely not good for groups, but perfect for parties of two. Surprisingly, the cole-slaw was just so-so, but I'm glad to report that the pita bread for my sandwich was amazingly fresh and soft. As a bonus note, I'm a bit hesitant to say this, but I think it's part of the experience...ALL of the waitresses are very pretty. I'm guessing that explains the draw for the older men. read more

They're also super friendly and the prices are reasonable for downtown. Is this the greatest food I've ever had? Nope but it's darn good (especially their burgers) so when you add in the price and fast and friendly service this is a solid 4 star recommend. I have eaten here twice and the food was really good. The first time I went I had a gyros which was very good. The tzatziki sauce was definitely home made and had been made with love, I know this because it brought a tear to my eye!!! When I got a chance to talk to the cook, he told me about his mother making it from scratch, I hope I can talk her into making some skordalia, which is something I love and admire and have not been able to construct on my own. Stumbled onto this place while visiting the Ohio bookstore across the street. As mentioned in other reviews this a friendly hole in the wall restaurant with a lot of character and an attentive staff. Their homemade soup is thick and delicious particularly on cold days. I also had the bacon burger made with leafy lettuce in place of bread. Great, family-run lunchtime diner downtown. And when I say family-run, I mean that at all times, at least two generations of the family is behind the counter.
