My husband and I were here for the weekend visiting my daughter who is working on her Masters at UofC. The atmosphere is casual sophistication. The staff are warm and welcoming. The public areas and rooms have great modern art. The rooms are a reasonable size and have comfortable seating areas with a good reading lamp. We were on the second floor so there was a bit of street noise, however Hyde Park gets quiet by around 10PM, so it wasn't an issue. The only negative was the breakfast we had on Sunday. The service was slow. My toasted bagel was barely warm and still white. My husbands stack of pancakes was tall and fluffy with perfectly cooked bacon and came with about a tablespoon of syrup. The waitress never came back to check on us. We had to flag a busboy to get more syrup and coffee refills. read more

This review is solely on the room (suite) at Sophy. Not the restaurant. We can get to that another day! My boyfriend had a party for me here in January. He rented the suite (there is only 1) in the hotel, and he rented the room connected next door. The suite is amazing. I wasn't expecting the beauty at all. Great view of Hyde Park. Love the floor to ceiling windows. The price was reasonable. The decor is gorgeous. Colorful, classic, with art work to die for! All throughout the hotel from the lobby up you will see great artwork. Everything is this room screamed me. We had a DJ, Bartender and Caterer and the flow and set up all worked. The bathroom with the tub and shower combo I LOVE! Staff was very accommodating from the valet to the front desk staff. I recommend this place for a quick get away to a nice small dinner party. I will visit again. read more

This is a beautiful hotel in the heart of Hyde Park. I did not stay in a room, but I stopped by with a friend for a nice cocktail. We had a good time, but the space is not being maintained. Winter is over, so please clean your carpets. Also, the tables need to be cleaned when a patron leaves. Our table was very sticky. I hope to return to a better maintained space and try the food. Really nice place physically and really your only option in Hyde Park currently. But boy-o-boy if you want to spend a ton of money at a hotel and get treated like absolute shit this is the place to come. The stories I could tell you about the behavior of some of the staff are epic. Terrible customer service and god forbid you want your room cleaned, or want to park on-site(yeah make sure you add 28 dollars a day to park in a sketchy parking garage two blocks away onto the cost of your stay) even thought they have parking on-site guests are not allowed to use it, even for a few minutes. Also no restaurant or bar service at all on Mondays and nothing Tuesday and Wednesday until 11am. They blame it all on Covid but that's total BS, I've spent a ton of time at a ton of hotels that this place claims to be on par with and this just does not add up. Some of the folks here are pretty friendly but not particularly helpful but a lot of the staff are just plain rude and act like they are doing you a huge favor for letting you stay here for $3000/wk Unfortunately I've got business in this neighborhood that keeps me coming back to this place(I've stayed here 3 or 4 times in the last couple of months) but if there was a better option than being treated like a walking ATM at this hotel I'd for sure jump right on it. Can't wait until something better opens up in Hyde Park. read more

Truly a disappointment. This is my family's third time staying at this hotel. We have loved it in the past, but this most recent trip has been a nightmare. Upon arrival Kalie, the front desk person, was extremely condescending critiquing that we had booked using Agoda and not the hotel's main website. She then refused to put us in a room that could accommodate 4 people (like we had originally booked), and instead put us in a room that had a twin-sized pull out couch and a king bed. When we got to the room the pull out was extremely stained and there was pubic hair on the king bed. Because the front desk person was so rude and we were exhausted, we put up with the lack of proper room cleanliness and had one of us sleep on the floor. The blatant disregard for accommodation and absence of professionalism has really left a sour taste in our mouths and I can't believe that a hotel that seemingly prides itself on customer service could treat people like this. read more

Great location--there is a 24-hour Subway just across the street, & also close to Hyde Park, UChicago, and Museum of Sciences and Tech, etc. The lobby & the room interior are sleek and comforting. The counter staff is very friendly and helpful, too. The lobby and bar is also great for friends or making new friends. If I re-visit Chicago as a visitor (hopefully my job interview will succeed), I will stay there for sure. read more

This hotel is amazing. The ambiance, the interior decorating, soulful music, modern rooms and finishes throughout paralleled with vintage pieces (i.en record player, records, magnifying glasses, etc.). Beyond the artistic displays that are bold and beautiful, there is an eclectic spirit of appreciation for past African American artists (i.e. Bessie Smith). Did I mention the tasty menu and cocktail selection offered by the menu, that's always packed. I would recommend this hotel any day. The only downfall is you have to catch an uber to get around tourists spots. However, the area is loaded with food options!!! read more

Everything about this place is exceptional. The staff are total professionals who offer kindness and wonderful service be it the front desk, restaurant or housekeeping. I don't come to Hyde Park that often so I don't have any comparatives though this place would help out any neighborhood! Valets are friendly, front desk helpful, location is right in the middle of a multitude of good restaurants and close proximity to UofC Campus and the Museum of Science and Industry. Restaurant served excellent breakfast and the bar had a vast selection of drink. Additionally, the room was awesome. Mattress new and comfy, great duvet, work space, seating area, Gilchrist soaps and lotions as well as a shower where you don't get soaked in cold water trying to turn it on! Only downside was the bartender had a crap attitude. We'll be back! read more

Exceptionally accommodating! That can't be under stated. Beautiful and modern, it is now one of my favorite places to stay. Located in the heart of Hyde Park, you can walk to just about anything you want to enjoy, be it food, entertainment, books, cafes, boutiques, or the lake/beach. There was a mishap with booking a specific package that should not have been live on their site at the time. Instead of simply telling us that we couldnt have that package, they understood how the mistake occurred and met us halfway with the package that we believed we booked. The lobby is inviting and they have a fantastic selection of wine, art and literature that will make an enthusiast quote happy. I will be back! read more

If you've read my other reviews, you know I'm big on customer service. I am truly embarrassed for this place. The gorgeous ambiance does NOT make up for the rudeness of the bar staff. I stood at the bar for 12 minutes without ANY acknowledgement. There were two bartenders and a bar back. The bar back's name is Peter, and whomever told him it was okay to take orders is an idiot. He sees me after 12 minutes of waiting and asks "did you need something?" No, idiot, I'm standing here staring because that's what I like to do on Saturday nights. {insert middle finger emoji} I order a vodka sprite and a cider. "We're out of cider." Ok, give me two vodka sprites, please. What does Peter say? "Ok so you want two vodkas and two sprites? I say No... two vodkas & sprites. The bartender makes the drinks while Peter rings me up. What's on the bill? Two vodkas, and two sprites. I said "why are you charging for the pop?" He said "that's how it is. If you order neat, you only get charged for the vodka." I told him that's ridiculous, and that no place I've ever been to in my 20 years of going to bars had I ever been charged for the pop in my drink. I don't know who the hell these people think they are. I'd love for a manager to contact me to explain why on God's green earth they find it necessary to charge for pop in a bar drink. Wtf is wrong with this place? What a joke. We chose the Sophy Hotel for our wedding and we are so happy we did! Our wedding was on the south side in Bridgeport, and this location was convenient and easy for our vendors and guests. Our wedding guests raved about the beautiful mid-century modern design of the hotel, and loved all the beautiful artworks. We stayed at the Dorchester Suite which was absolutely perfect as a bridal suite. The room was huge, with tons of natural light, allowing for my bridal party to do hair and makeup with ease at the large conference table set up. The bathroom in the suite was amazing!! A suite like the Dorchester would have cost double in other areas of the city, and it honestly felt like a special gem. The staff at Sophy were super professional and friendly throughout the whole process of organizing our wedding block, managing valet, etc. We will definitely be back for cocktails and dinner, and hopefully a staycation soon. We have stayed at this hotel before and loved it- very clean, good food, excellent staff- however this weekend we came to visit my daughter and when we were leaving the hotel last night to go for a walk, we were stopped by staff in the lounge in front of a crowd and told that we had not paid our check for breakfast that morning and dinner the night before. We said that we were staying at the hotel and yes we had signed the checks for both meals including generous tips charged to our room. The staff member backed off and I called the front desk when we got back to the room to express my shock. This morning upon check out the charges in question- sure enough were on our bill. We received an apology but it was humiliating to be called out as common thieves when we were most definitely not. We are not staying here ever again. read more

I had a suite and they don't do housekeeping unless you ask. So instead of relaxation you buy another preocupation. Very cheap.

This hotel is fantastic! My finance and I stayed here for our anniversary last month and we couldn't believe we were in Chicago!... There was a record player in our room and when we tried to throw on our favorite Junior Wells record, we discovered the record player's needle was broken. That did not stop us! The front office manager, I think his name was Max, had us a new one in 10 minutes tops! Best hotel in the Midwest if you ask me! read more

This hotel is phenomenal. My family and I stayed at the Sophy Hyde Park for two weeks visiting family and friends. We used to live in Chicago but moved to Southern Arizona in 2017, so this was like Homecoming for us. The atmosphere is amazing. It's centrally located in Hyde Park, so it's a 15 minute drive to downtown Chicago, but it's also only 15 minutes from the Dan Ryan if you need to go to the south suburbs. The staff was gracious, accommodating, and friendly. Whenever we left, people at the front desk said, "have a great day!" Whenever we returned they said, "welcome back!" It was a small thing, but it made us feel incredibly welcome in our new home away from home. One of the managers I interacted with, Michael, was engaging and conversational with the guests. The Bartenders, Tim and Gabriel, were fun and friendly. This gem of a hotel is a must stay if you're trying to avoid how hectic Downtown Chicago can be. The next time we're in town visiting family, we're DEFINITELY staying at the Sophy. read more

Whimsical detail of portable phonograph and classic jazz/blues LPs in room, auto/magic touch curtains, clean, comfortable beds, etc. Only three constructive criticisms - two days of no toilet paper in lobby bathroom (probably casualty of COVID policy of minimal housekeeping), the heating/air conditioning unit in room and it was noisy, and did not see any COVID cleaning on common areas (elevator buttons, door handles, etc.) Let me brag on the staff. From the personable and professional front desk folks to the restaurant staff - excellent service! My son's wallet fell out of his pocket at brunch, staff turned it into front desk and they returned it. Super grateful!!! Know the parking situation. I hadn't been here in months so I was highly anticipating having another one of Sophy Hotel amazing cheeseburgers! Made a special trip just for this burger. Of course - Good as last time I cut the generously sized burger into fourths and ate a quarter of it at the restaurant having the rest boxed to go. I get home to partake in another delightful serving for the evening and the remaining piece from what I cut in half is gone!!!! Five star place, but all the remaining food seen prior to the doggie bag can't all make it to the doggie bag!?!? Awwww nah, son! No restaurant- fast food or five star- has EVER done this. Not upset, but a bit disappointed as this burger was nearly $14. Guess the silver lining is that the service was great and I didn't have to wait a while to be waited on like typically expected. Not a nice feeling leaving a meal I was initially excited about only to feel like someone in the back needed to share in my meal as they were wrapping it up to go. Like I just don't understand what the rest went if someone outside of myself didn't eat it or feared to mention they dropped the remainder on the floor. This hotel is beautiful however customer service was terrible. We arrived willing to pay for valet and was told that we could park ourselves because 1. Parking was tight 2. The valet attendant didn't know how to park well. Upon checking out to collect our car from valet we were told the credit card machine was down and to travel across the street to retrieve cash. This all happened about 12:30am. Once paid. Our car was not retrieved from valet. We basically did self parking at what was supposed to be valet. God bless. read more

Such a disappointment. I did not stay in the hotel, but did meet friends here for drinks. The service is extremely poor. Our server (Ide) spent the majority of the evening talking to a table of ladies. A manager asked about our experience. We told him it was extremely poor. We had been waiting 20 minutes for drinks. He spoke to the waiter. We waited another 15. Wildly disappointing. I came to the hotel with the intentions of purchasing a gift card so that my partner and I could enjoy a staycation and a nice dinner. I prefer to spend my dollars in my community. I love that HP has a thriving business district. But based on the quality of service I received in the bar, I won't be spending money at the Sophy anytime soon. I hope they fix this and hire or either train their wait staff. I'm tired of businesses disappearing from the South Side landscape. read more

Sophy is one of the most elegant, thoughtfully designed hotels we have ever stayed in. The room is spacious and beautifully appointed with local artisans work. There is a phonograph with blues records provided - a nice touch. The TV is huge - although we never turned it on:-) There are books, hair dryer, steamer, coffee maker, real glasses all displayed in n attractive non-obtrusive manner. I was dining in at the Sophy for a work meeting and had to wait for awhile to order because my colleague was super late. When he arrived, my original waitress, Alisa, who was incredibly nice, informed me that she was leaving. Since she originally waited on me and out of courtesy to her time, I tipped her even though I hadn't even ordered anything yet. I immediately ordered when the new waitress arrived. I ate my food (lobster roll which was honestly subpar but I didn't complain because the world has bigger issues rn), I paid my tab, finished some work and went to the washroom to head to my 6 o'clock meeting. While I was in the washroom, my 6 o'clock pushed to 7 o'clock so I went back outside to sit on the couch area (which was completely empty (5pm on a Thursday) to just waste some time. I was quiet, pleasant, courteous and disturbed no one. About 5 minutes after sitting down, a young gentleman came and informed me that that area was for large groups and if a large group came, I would have to give my seats up. Totally understandable and reasonable. Then Juan arrives. He was immediately rude, condescending and displayed horrible customer service. He insisted I was to leave because that area was for large parties. I referenced what his colleague just mentioned and asked was there anyone waiting for the area? He said no but he's watched me move tables three times now. That wasn't the case. I initially moved from the first table because it was incredibly hot and stayed at the second table during duration of my visit. As a visibly Muslim woman sitting directly on the side of the hotel, I understood exactly why I wasn't allowed to sit there. As a respected community servant, an essential worker and a doctor I am shocked at the experience I had here and will not be frequenting back. Juan's demeanor was hostile and completely unnecessary. Stunning hotel very close to university of Chicago (I was here just o visit my son at school in his freshman year)....service and hotel amenities are not what I would consider four star....and not what I'd consider three star....but maybe that's because I had a different level of expectations given that I was staying in the "opus suite"....after three days of staying here, I asked several times to have the small mini bar re-stocked and finally when someone came, she asked "did you consume this all today?" And prior to that I was asked several times "what do you need re stocked in the mini bar?" Ummm....I thought it was a hotels dream to have someone who was actually consuming the highly marked up items in the mini bar??? Like the bottles of water and diet cokes (that were expired) marked up to twice what I could buy them for in a vending machine....Hotel restaurant closes at 10 so make other arrangements....won't be staying here again.... read more
