I just moved to Texas and thought to try Texas BBQ. Stopping here left me very wanting more. You come in and order your food at a cafeteria style counter where the meat is already cooked and kept warm under warming lights. You order the type of meal you would like one, two, three or four meat meals or several types of sandwiches. You get your meat served to you then you move down the line to pick your sides from steam pans that were pretty empty. The potatos were dry and looked old. The mac and cheese was thick and scary. I had the beans and western corn. Your meat is served dry and you have to attack it with this sweet and syrupy BBQ sauce. You move down the line and get your plastic drink cup. You fill your cup with your beverage of choice. The sweet tea was not a disappointment, clean tasting and not too sweet. I sat down and started my meal. The brisket was tender and you could taste some smoke within. It had a nice crust and had a great mouth feel. Not rubbery or stiff. I added some BBQ sauce from the cup that I put it in so I could taste the meats without extra flavors involved. The little sauce I added gave the brisket a little added tang. Now the ribs were another story. These three ribs were lacking of meat and had the texture of the bottom of a tennis shoe. The little meat attached did not want to leave the bone and when It was torn from the bone it had no flavor or meaty texture. Adding some sauce allowed me to tolerate this attempt at a meat substitute. The staff was helpful and friendly to walk me through the menu and suggest items since I said this was my first time here. I will visit other BBQ joints since I have moved here. I hope to discover other types of BBQ and discover what this area has to offer. read more

My wife and I pass by this restaurant regularly and since it was the only BBQ restaurant we had not tried in the area, decided to get some food to go. There are rarely very many cars in the parking lot, so we weren't expecting anything like Hutchins BBQ in McKinney. This place will not get a second chance to make a first impression. I ordered the large chopped beef sandwich combo and my wife ordered the pulled pork combo. First of all, my sandwich was placed on a small white bread hamburger bun, not at all like the website states and half the size of the photo on the website. I ordered the green beans and okra sides. The green beans tasted like something out of a Del Monte can. The okra was as hard as small rocks and I'm quite sure they had been sitting under the lights for most of the day. Both the beef and pulled pork were decent. Not good, but not bad either. The bbq sauce was ok. All this for a mere $25. Moral of the story? If you never see cars in the parking lot, keep going. read more

This location in Allen has disappointed us for the LAST time. Went through the drive through yesterday after work, ordered the brisket plate, they say they aren't stingy on their meat, that's a crock, my husband was so pissed, and the toast must have been cooked hours before we arrived you could not even tear it apart! The baked potatoe was very cold the okra was so greasy I could not eat it, We will NEVER be returning to this locations ever!!! The one in Rockwall off of Goliad is awesome. read more

I have to be honest, everyone was very nice here and I give them 5 stars for customer service, but I was very unsatisfied by the food. I paid 12.99 for 4 very small ribs, and very small side of Mac & Cheese and okra (think of a 2oz bowl of a side size). Now that wouldn't be a big issue for me if the quality was outstanding. Unfortunately the quality was sub par: the Mac and cheese was a little cold, the ribs were small and taste just okay, and the okra was standard. For them to have a sign outside that read "we don't skimp on meat" it certainly felt like they didn't skimp on meat; they skimped on an entire meal. They did have pulled pork and chicken specials, but if the price reflects the item size you might not be getting much. read more

Way too expensive for what you get. I ordered the October "Special" which was any sandwich plate for $8,99. Came to $9.73 after tax, almost 10 bucks for lunch with no drink.I got 4 slices of paper thin dry brisket, cold cream corn, and potato salad that I would be embarrassed to bring to a picnic. I ordered water, which they give you this tiny plastic Dixie cup. I asked for a bigger cup for water and was told he would have to charge me for a drink. I'll never be back and save my friends a few bucks by letting them know. Bring back Bar-B-Cuties! I give this place another 6 months at best. 6:30 on A Sunday and very disappointed by the wait. Only 5 tables occupied and a line out the door. I counted 6 people walk out due to the long wait. I was a regular in Carrollton over 20 years ago. The food is great but the service needs to be addressed. read more

Gave this place a 2nd chance it hopes of improvement. Not so much. $38 got us a bag of greasy mess! The brisket was fatty and soaked in grease....the whole chicken was pink...too expensive and too many other better choices in town. Big Rays BBQ blows this place out of water. Soul-man's barbecue has been a great experience for me each time i've gone. My favorites are the creamed corn and the chopped brisket. Beside the food, Woody the manager has been exceptional. He's super friendly and always makes my dad and I feel welcome. We hope he's there each time we go, he puts the soul in Soul-man's. read more

I can see that service is not very "fluffy" if you will but it's always been good. And it's a que place, are you really searching for smiles and hugs while you're there. This place is great! We came here on a Monday for lunch and it was fabulous. The food has a very home cooked feel. The ribs, pulled pork and sausage were all delicious. We had the fried cabbage, fries, Mac n cheese and coleslaw. Best coleslaw ever! They even have free vanilla ice cream cones! Love this place, will definitely be back. read more

I tried to take my family here for lunch. I come here during the week ever so often and have always enjoyed the food and the customer service. Not so on this day. The sides at the front were mostly empty. I asked a lady working if there were more sides and she said there was more in the back. So we waited and the lady (whom leader stated she was the manager) said she could help us and I said I was waiting to see what sides they had. I asked her the same question I asked the previous person that at this point wasn't doing anything that resembled getting more sides and she told me that she didn't know and that she was working a different station. I was definitely annoyed by the lack of effort and asked if she could possibly ask her coworkers that would know. She turned and yelled to the back where someone said something to her that I couldn't make out. Expecting her to relay the response I waited, only to have her to back to doing whatever she was doing without so much as a look in my direction. At this point I was done but I wanted to make sure they knew I was disappointed in their lack of customer service so I tried to explain It but they defended being out of good because it was Christmas Eve. I explained that it wasn't that they were out of food but that none of them could tell me what they had or could be bothered to find out. Lost me as a customer today. My favorite food here is their sausage. It has a distinct taste like no other, not even Hutchins can beat it. All of their other meats, taste just as good. Their bbq sauce is unbeatable. Cream corn, beans, and fries are our families favorite sides. Soulman's is our family favorite bbq place in Allen. Also, they have the friendliest staff around. read more

I am truly puzzled by the bad reviews I've seen on here. I try not to let a week go by without going to Soulman's. The brisket is tender, the sauce flavorful, and the sides I've had (cabbage, green beans, macaroni and cheese and creamed corn) have been consistently good as well. My husband has started asking me to bring home their ham everytime I go because he says it is very good. I've gone to Dallas chain BBQ restaurants for a long time (Dickey's, Sonny Bryan's, Rudy's) and Soulman's is my favorite. And the staff is always very friendly. The only negative thing I could possibly say is that I never see coupons for their food or a "frequent diner" type card to reward loyal customers. read more

I had the "Out of Sight" deal ($10.50) which is basically a hoagie bun with chopped beef, and comes with 2 sides. Sandwich was ok, although pretty lean (meat VERY carefully measured out) on the amount of beef (maybe 4 oz). Sides were good. What really annoyed me is they charge $2.80 for the large (really the regular size) drink in the plastic cup. The smaller size drink in the foam cup was $2.25 (I think - I got the plastic cup regular one). That is a crazy price. Way more that any other restaurant that I have ever been to. They have had a recent price increase on everything except the triple meat platter (which was overpriced to start with). This place is overpriced and just not worth it. I think their penny pinching ways will catch up with them, especially when they piss off the locals (like me). I am very disappointed, and will not be going back. There are other bbq places in Allen that are not trying to price gouge, although the Soulman's meat quality is usually very good - except for the ribs which are (and always have been) terrible. I guess that is not a good sign when a bbq place can't get ribs cooked correctly. Just saw they have a "special" of half rack of ribs for $14.99. That is 4 individual ribs. And they are not any good (I've tried the ribs several times, so tough and chewy that I had to complain each time, they have never changed, and always responded by being irritated). I really hate to write a review like this (this is my first) since I believe in supporting the local restuarants, but feel as though I need to warn people about this place. I tried Soulman's BBQ newest location in Allen a couple of times in the past month. If you crave smoke like I do, this is the place. One of my favorites, the pulled pork sandwich served with your choice of 2 sides and a drink for $7.99. The pork is well seasoned and has plenty of fat and bark, Yum me! We use to go to this restaurant all the time until last week. The manager Woody was so rude to me because I asked for a refund on an item that was not ready and they had to cook it. I did not have time to wait as I was in the drive thru so I simply asked for a refund and he started throwing things and getting an attitude with me. We have eaten here numerous times. Most of the time it is very good. I love their cabbage and they have complimentary ice cream. A couple times the food (chicken & veggies) tasted like it had been sitting there a while. Try to go during peak times. The pork sandwich meal (sandwich, 2 veggies, drink) for 7.99 is a good deal. They also usually have a monthly special. Regular prices seem on par with other BBQ places. read more
