After being there I am looking forward to going back and trying out the burger the owner boasted about. This trip I stuck with the BBQ chicken sandwich and a side of fries. The chicken had just the right amount of sauce and spice and the toasted bun was a great touch. The hand cut fries were very good and cooked perfectly. Love this place. It is only opened on Thursday and everything is cooked to order. So, don't show up in a hurry that fast tasteless food isn't served here. Real BBQ, freshly fried catfish and homemade fried chicken. Served with different sides our choices were yummy gumbo, salad or cheddar Mac & cheese. Don't forget desert of pecan or sweet potato pie. I had the catfish plate and a couple of extra side items just to try out a bunch of items. Hands down the best catfish I've ever had on the West Coast. The sides (greens, slaw, mac-n-cheese) were also off the hook! What was the most refreshing was the little slice of Southern Etiquette. It really made me homesick. -- There are a few (slight) negatives: - The place is small, kinda "hole in the wall" and a little "divey". It is kept very clean though! :) - The prices are a little high. But taste the food and you'll know why. They don't cut corners and they're not mass producing souther-ish food. 5 out of 5. We couldn't dine in because of COVID so we grabbed some fried chicken, rice and gravy, fresh cut fries and peach cobbler to go... My, oh my that peach cobbler is something else! From the website: "As of February 7, 2017, Southern Grill will be closed temporarily on Tuesdays & Wednesday for about a month, but will open every Thursday & Friday each week at the same time, 11 AM. Last week a tree fell on our roof and there was damage to the roof that is being fixed on the days we are closed. I ordered takeout and it was all ready to go when I arrived 10 minutes later. I had the oxtails and rice and an order of their peach cobbler. The oxtails came with one side (I chose baked beans) and a small corn bread. The oxtail and rice (14.99) was DELICIOUS but expensive for three pieces. The meat was so tender and the spices were so good and it was all over the rice so it was just delicious all around. The baked beans were good but a bit too sweet for me. Corn bread was just OK. The peach cobbler was good but beware, eat it warmed! I had a bit left over and I am the type who likes to eat cold leftovers straight out of the fridge, and I could see all the chunks of hardened butter in the cobbler. The vibe is very much old school southern grill. The cook even came out and greeted us and hoped we enjoyed our food, which we completely did. There was the perfect amount of smoky sweet goodness with just enough heat to make it crave-able. This was a good southern restaurant, I was in Atlanta not to long ago and it was comparable, I got the catfish Po boy with a side of collard greens. The sandwich was good but not the best I have has but the greens were out standing and made this feel like the real south. I would be back for the fried chicken as it is the best deal IMO. Great food and great service - these guys really care. Everything made from scratch, nothing frozen, all in house ingredients, flavor was pretty darn good, best BBQ I've had in WA so far. We had fried chicken 4 piece and wings, I got the ribs with fries and potato salad. Collard greens were amazing too. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is cause we woke up with swollen hands and feet, and I broke out in hives real bad. Never had such a reaction before in my life - so I'm not sure what it could have been but it was a little to scary too risk trying to eat here ever again. We were visiting Seattle a few weeks ago, and by chance, stopped by this place on the way to the airport. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted with a warm smile, and the kind gentleman behind the counter asked if we had ever been there before. When I told him we had not, he said 'well, welcome. I can tell you that everything on our menu here is good, because it's made with love.' He was not wrong. I had the ribs with Mac N Cheese, and my boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and baked beans. Both were incredible. The ribs fell off the bone, and the Mac N Cheese was amazing. I didn't try much of my boyfriend's food, but he said it was hands down, the best food we had during our trip. We also got the peach cobbler for dessert--perfection. The food is incredible, but the best thing about this spot are the people who run it. The fried chicken is better than New Orleans Willie Mae's Scotch House. The gumbo is top tier compared to all Louisiana gumbos. The flavor of the chicken is throughout the meat. This soul food restored my faith in Christ. The ribs were melt in your mouth good. The pulled pork sandwich was A1 steaksauce good. The potato salad was creamy goodness. I'm a born and raised southerner and love all that southern cuisine has to offer. As I read the reviews, it's important to arrive early so you can get what you want, or else they will run out. Running out of food? That sounds like this place is poppin! Unfortunately for me, I work later in the day, so waking up much earlier does not exist. Southern Grill closes at 4pm. My co-worker went to grab food for us around 2pm. I was wanting the catfish po-boy, but they were out. We both got the catfish platter which came with hush puppies and a side. I got their greens as a side since they were out of fried okra and mac n' cheese. The greens are vegetarian style and has bbq sauce mixed in. The hush puppies were fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside, soft inside. The catfish was flaky and flavorful. The cornmeal batter was savory and crunchy. Our order came with a lemon wedge, a container or tartar, and some hot sauce packets. Gotta have hot sauce!!! I'm already thinking about my next visit. I have in mind their fried chicken or their spicy wings and fries, and for sure on the list is their brisket and ribs. Keep in mind if you're ordering their fried chicken, give them about 20 mins.
