This was one of the worst dinning experiences I've had. Basic food, wilted brown lettuce on the salad bar, and rude staff. We were a family of four and all ordered food and/or salad bar. My son (who ordered a large $25 rib platter) snuck his fork over and took a bite of my salad. The waitress then loudly and rudely told him if he took one more bite of my food she was gonna charge him for a salad bar. There's a difference between tasting and sharing. Went for lunch to try it out at the Ocala location on mericamp road. The staff was very nice and attentive. The restaurant was big and extremely well kept. Clean, organized, and well put together. The salad bar was AMAZING. I got fatty brisket and I could have done without, the unlimited soup and salad bar would have been enough. The brisket was sliced too thin for my liking, but I understand that's the way they do it. My husband got a sliced pork sandwich. The pork was dry, but the sauce helped. I had every intention of going to the Zaxby's next door, but when a restaurant has the audacity to advertise "Best Babybacks Anywhere" I am left with no choice but to call an audible. My initial thoughts were that a restaurant with a drive-thru could not possibly have good baby backs, much less the BEST anywhere. This was ABSOLUTELY confirmed the moment I saw them. Lets start with the presentation. It is about what you would expect. The sauce lacks that dark color you hope you love to see develop on the top of the ribs (almost as if the sauce was not put on while they were in the smoker). Visually, the ribs give off the vibe of "palatable" more than "Best Babybacks Anywhere" and I think that sums them up perfectly. Now lets dive into flavor. Simply put: aggressively average. The meat was a bit chewy, and a bit on the dry side. It certainly did not have the juicy and tender profile I want in my smoked meat. The aforementioned sauce was frankly disappointing. It certainly did not taste homemade, and reminded me of the Curly's pre-made pulled pork you buy at the grocery store and heat up in the microwave. In addition to the lackluster flavor, the viscosity was not up to snuff. The sauce was runny and did not have the thickness you want when you bite into a rib. All in all, a very average flavor profile. Now here is where I would make my suggestion for what the sign should read: "Best Value Babybacks". The price point on these was only $13.99, which for a FULL rack is a GREAT price. If you asked me if these ribs were worth the money, I would say absolutely. For a quick, easy, convenient meal these are perfect; they just are not the "Best Babybacks Anywhere" as advertised. The service here was simply amazing. The staff was INCREDIBLY friendly. The nice lady at the window was incredibly happy to serve us and was very committed to making our experience better. When I think of barbecue, I am thinking of friendly, Soutern hospitality and that is exactly what you get here. Let me be clear, this place was not unpalatable and I had a great experience, but claiming to have the "Best Babybacks Anywhere" is an egregious and untrue statement. We got a baby back 1/2 rack that was melt in your mouth good. We also got their brisket sandwich and again...what amazing flavor. We've been eating here at Pig & Cattle for a few years now and have always liked it. Unfortunately we won't be going back for the foreseeable future. First, they changed their hamburger patties and we were not impressed. The new patties are more like what you'd buy at a wholesale club than what you'd want from your favorite BBQ place. Big disappointment. The reason we're won't return though isn't about the food. Tonight I placed an order for pickup. The past 2 times we've gotten curbside delivery, but tonight I went inside to pick up my order. When I went in I noticed that no one was wearing any type of protective gear. No facemasks at all. None of the wait staff was wearing any, but especially none of the cooks. HAD I KNOWN I WOULD NOT HAVE PLACED AN ORDER AT THIS RESTAURANT. I 100% agree that it is everyone's right to wear or not wear a facemask in their place of business, however I also agree that it is my right not to frequent businesses that do not try to protect their customers in every possible way. I can make anything that is on The Pig & Cattle menu just as well if not better at home. That is what I will do from now on. I ordered the half rack of Baby back ribs w/Okra & Corn Bread and the salad bar. Everything on the salad bar was fresh and delicious, I really enjoyed the bean salad and potato salad. But everything was so tasty, I could have just gotten the salad bar and been happy. The Baby back ribs were very tender and tasty, I was actually going to take the ribs home however, they tasted so good I just couldn't stop eating them. The Okra was cooked perfectly and the Corn bread was spot on. I even ordered another half rack of Baby back and Half rack of St. Louis style to go... for which I had the following night for dinner and they tasted great even re-heated. Been seeing some negative reviews on this spot lately and not sure why. I've been coming here for over a year. Probably once a month when I visit the area. The service is top notch! Always friendly, upbeat and a smile. The food is prepared quickly and I don't even have time to finish a beer while I'm waiting for my order to go. This place is great and now my new "go to" for bbq when in town. Stop in and relax and enjoy a good meal... and a cold brew. First time going to southern pig and cattle today and we'll definitely be going back! I had the pulled pork on garlic toast with a sweet potato side, and my husband had the sliced pork on garlic bread with macaroni and cheese side. Everything was very tasty and perfectly cooked! Our server, Deb, even asked us if we'd like to take our iced teas to go when we were finished, and brought us out fresh drinks. That was truly appreciated on a hot day of running errands. Everything was great, only one thing have to say about your BBQ sauce: the sweet was spot on so delicious.. This place started out good BUT past year or so it has fallen down drastically...we used to have them cater for our employee lunches once every few months but not anymore , always check your bags employees forget half your order for takeout...portions are small and the cut of meats are very low quality lately pork is basically all fat and brisket is so thin you'd have to order 3 orders of them to get full for one person not to mention past couple times I've gave them another try after months of not going I've got really sick along with others who ate the same thing I hate to leave negative reviews for restaurants because it hurts them dramatically but they need to clean house and start over read more
