A bar that serves grilled cheese? What an awesome idea. A friend and I came around 5:30 (they open at 5) and there was plenty of seating - both at the bar and in the booths. We secured a cozy booth towards the back where we dropped off out jackets and immediately picked up the menu. There's a long list of pre-selected grilled cheeses as well as the option to create your own. I love the variety in cheese, breads, meats, and toppings (they even have vegan meat options!). We ordered the ham, apples, grilled onion, honey mustard, gouda, and swiss on multigrain to split. Since healthiness is pretty much out the window once you settle on grilled cheese as a meal, we threw in a side of tots. (Slight tangent, if you're feeling really ambitious, get the totchos. Essentially nachos, but with tater tots instead of chips, and all the same topping goodness!) I think the bartender slightly judged me when I ordered only food and no drink, but hey, I was here to eat. About ten minutes later, out came our fresh off the griddle grilled cheese sandwich, cut diagonally, and served with a mound of tater tots. I took a bite and man, my taste buds were SO happy. The honey mustard and apple added just some sweetness to the sandwich that went really well with the gooey cheese. I was less a fan of the tots (I prefer when they're slightly less crunchy) but my friend devoured them so I'll assume he was a fan. My one quip with this place is it's kind of pricey for a grilled cheese sandwich. We ended up paying about $14 (sandwich + tots + tip) for something that I could likely make on my own for much cheaper if I bothered to buy all the ingredients. I love me some Spacebar. This tiny bar is super casual, a little kitschy, and perfect for catching up with a couple of friends over a diverse rotation of ever-changing brews. Food: The grilled cheeses are all well executed, and there is a long list of add-ons offered that give you a nice range of customization (my recommendation is to slap some of the the "garlicky spinach" on pretty much anything). I still never feel like a sandwich for dinner is ever enough, so it's a good thing they also offer TOTS!!! Their "totchos" are a fun concept, some argue that smothering something in cheese is always an upgrade, but I prefer my tots crispity-delicious, so maybe I'm a tot-purist here. Beer: I love a good variety of taps, and Spacebar doesn't disappoint. I most appreciate that you can order any of the drafts in a sample, small goblet, or pint, so it's possible to enjoy a moderate amount of many different beers vs. getting unreasonably wasted trying to try everything (but it that's your plan anyway, just order the full pints, haha). Ambiance: This bar is narrow and TINY, with one bathroom for one. It's lined with four-person booths down a long bar, and their music selection is eclectic, which can be a fun talking point. The last time I was there, they had Pixar movies showing on a TV above the bar. This place is great for meeting a couple of friends, but I've the feeling any group larger than 5-6 will probably feel a bit crowded. Also, parking is a bit of a bear; there are a couple of dedicated parking spots directly in front of the restaurant, but otherwise you have to find street parking and walk. This place having so many beers, I would love to see them expand their snack/appetizer selection to make it a little more welcoming for a small group to sit, nosh, and kick back for a while. (But it does get crowded later in the night, so maybe that's part of the design to help keep the crowd turning over?) Loved this place! I love grilled cheese sandwiches and this place is perfect. Even my fiance who is not big on grilled cheese or cheese even was a huge fan of this place. The ambiance was very fitting for the name and the vibe was very chill and homey where the bartenders greet you as you come in, and you just seat yourself. You order at the bar and they bring the food to you. Everything is made fresh and you could smell all the grilled cheese goodness going on. They have an awesome menu with all sorts of different grilled cheese sandwiches and other sandwiches and tater tots. You can order one of their menu items or build your own. Their tater tots are super crispy and taste fresh. They even have a pbj grilled cheese, I was like whoaaa, def gotta try that next time. Unique sandwiches and good ol traditional ones too. I had the grilled swiss cheese pastrami that comes with the must have sauerkraut and russian dressing on rye. The pastrami meat was delish and the bread was perfectly buttered and grilled. I was excited to try this place out, but it's just not my scene. I am all about a local bar, especially with a theme. That aspect of Spacebar was perfect. There was space related decor everywhere. For beer connoisseurs, they have a pretty long list of craft beers on tap from all over. There was also a selection of the typical domestics and other beers in a can/bottle. The prices were decent as well. While there is some seating, all orders are placed at the bar. I opted to build my own grilled cheese (all of their main dishes are some type of grilled cheese). I went with turkey, sauerkraut, banana peppers and Russian sauce. The combo itself was good. The sandwich was very greasy (as is a grilled cheese) and messy to eat. I had the sliced grilled hot dog, kraut, mustard w/ cheddar and Swiss on rye and wow it was very delicious! The hot dog was perfectly cooked. Tator tots were good as well. Beer selection is good but a bit pricey. I tried the heavy seas greater pumpkin imperial ale for $11/ pint. It was great idk about the price though. This is a trendy, small bar with various beer options and good drinking food. The totchos are by far the best deal! You can add any toppings you want, but unfortunately they cost extra. To preface: This is the NoVA headquarters for factory production of hipsters, and with all things hipster, common sense and sound business practice takes a back seat to looking cool and standing out. That being said they have the best dang greasy/cheesy bar food dishes that make the over abundance of plaid and ironic beanies well worth it. The food is seriously awesome if you have a hankering for fried buttery or bread and cheese eats. The beer selection is extensive and prices are pretty okay given the area and caliber of brews they have on hand. The layout, spacing, and seating is a HOT MESS and creates a frantic and stacked bar that can be difficult to get service in. I DO NOT recommend this place for groups, it is a challenge to get seating with just two people. The near pitch dark lighting and blaring music are more akin to being in a dingy night club and honestly not something I care for when trying to enjoy a delicious grilled cheese. They do play awesome kung fu movies among other "unique" things I'm sure. All in all this a fun atmosphere with a lot of energy...I don't recommend it for a laid back conversation and meal unless you go super early or super late. This is an amazing grilled cheese dive bar-type of location. Came here with my lady friend on a Sunday night after being recommended by a few friends, and we weren't disappointed by the place itself. First things first, the parking is tight. There isn't very much parking in the actual lot, so we parked on the street around the corner in the neighborhood and walked over. Spacebar itself is very tiny, so you have to keep your eyes open when driving and make sure you're looking for it because it is very easy to miss. The atmosphere can get pretty loud, as the space is fairly small, but the atmosphere is generally pretty chill. It was a Sunday evening, so plenty of bar space to sit with only a couple of tables available. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of space, so I can only imagine what it's like on a busy Friday or Saturday night, but we didn't have any issues. It's not really "waiter" service per se, you go to the bar and place your food and drink orders, and they'll bring it over to your table when it's ready. The service was pretty acceptable, not super fast, but definitely didn't feel like we had to wait too long for our food. Now on to the food and drinks. The grilled cheese choices are AMAZING, that's the main reason to come here. The menu is loaded with options. It was hard to choose our food because nearly everything sounded really good, and I'm looking forward to trying more of their choices in the future. They have a great selection of beers and ciders, and they are really good. If I had any other complaints, it would probably be that there's literally only one restroom in the entire place in the back, as least that I saw when we were there. Especially when it gets busy, that seems like it can suck a bit, but with the space that's there, what can you really do about that? I can't really hold that against them. After a long day of running around we decided to stop in for a quick early supper. It took us a while to find this place as the sign is practically invisible from the road. Inside there are menus on clipboards located at each table. It's a seat yourself type of set up. You order your food at the bar after you choose a sandwich from a long list. There were also many beers to choose from although I did not order any. There was a decanter of water which you can help yourself to . Apparently the spout in the container needed to be cleaned as the water smelled like wet dogs. The smell wasn't from The cups as they were disposable Dixie cups. Not a great intro to the meal. Beware if you need to use the facilities. It smelled as if I had stepped into a giant urinal. I feared for what was on my shoes. What we ordered. #10. A grilled cheese, cheesesteak essentially. It was good, with bell peppers, onions and beef. Toasted bread. #20. A bbq grilled sandwich. This was not good. The sauce was very disappointing. I believe it was served on rye which was an odd combo. Order of totchos. This was a very generous sized order. It was disappointing and something you would make at home in your oven with a bag of ore-ida and kraft shreds. To summarize. The only good thing we had was the steak sandwich. I wouldn't return. Overall it's a fattening pig fest to go there because everything is fried or grilled and covered in cheese but the food is worth it when you're gonna splurge on the diet once in a while. My only complaint and why I didn't give 5 stars is because when it's crowded, you have to wait FOREVER for your food. Galaxy Hut is hands down my favorite bar in DC, so I was really excited to try Spacebar. The formula here is the same - lots of brews on tap and throwback food, but this seems to lack the charm of Galaxy Hut. It's located in a strip mall, and when a friend and I came around 8 on a Wednesday, it was packed and there was no where to sit. When a table finally opened up, we wound up having to sit with the previous table's dirty dishes during most of our stay. Unlike Galaxy Hut, which has a clearly demarked line to order beer, here you just wait at the bar like everywhere else, and hope to catch a bar tenders attention. That took a lot longer than it should have. I got tots, but had to ask for sauce, and only got half a plastic cup full. At Galaxy Hut, they always give me options when I order. It's not that Spacebar is bad. It has a great beer selection, and I'm sure it's one of the better bars in Falls Church, I just don't think its worth going here instead of Galaxy Hut. read more

This place is like a hidden gem in Falls Church! Amazing selection of beers, and an even better selection of sandwiches! Whenever I go here, I can never decide on what beer and sandwich to get; everything just sounds so delightful. But my personal favorite is the meatloaf sandwich. Virginia ABC laws are antiquated, stupid, and the perfect example of why you don't let people who live hundreds of miles from other people make rules that govern both sets equally. What I'm saying is I'm all for states rights if the states are about 150 square miles. Anyway, that leads me to this point: because of those ABC laws there are no straight-up bars in Virginia. In order to sell alcohol a restaurant needs to serve food and make at least 25% of their revenue from non-alcohol products. Which means Spacebar is as close as you're going to get to a straight-up bar in the Northern Virginia area and, it helps, that it's also pretty great. At least sixteen beers on tap with a rotating selection among IPAs, Stouts, and more. Generally good beer, which sometimes is difficult for a guy like me who tends to like Bud Light just fine, but every once in a while I like to class it up as well. It's a small joint, and gets crowded quickly. Booths on the left when you walk in, with some seats at the bar and the window on the right. Food-wise, Spacebar has good "I've had a beer or two" food - grilled cheeses and tater tots. They've got some selection when it comes to the types of cheeses and breads you can get, but just about everything tastes better after a few beers anyway. A good spot, that is often crowded, because Virginia lets a small, gerrymandered few control the BS laws that the majority don't want.* * - I actually asked a state delegate about this and his response was "Everyone thinks it's a stupid law, but nothing's going to change." The simplicity of the menu offerings is probably Spacebar's best appeal. Beer, cheese, and tots--I'm sold. They also have an impressive draft list which always pairs nicely with a gooey grilled cheese. The toppings are also wonderfully overwhelming, usually I have to randomly pick because I can't decide. For a casual setting that knows it's not trying to be fancy, I go in with no crazy expectations for service. The staff are there to pump out drinks and get sandwiches out in a timely manner. The last time I was here the bartender forgot to ring up my friend's grilled cheese and it wasn't until 15 minutes after I got my order that I gave up waiting and complained. He was very apologetic, comped the sandwich, and brought out the newly rung order in under 3 minutes. I was irritated at first, but it was a busy night, mistakes happen, and I was more impressed in the end by how well he recovered the whole situation. One of my favorite bars in all of northern Virginia. I love the sandwiches and the craft beer selection is excellent. The tots here are popular as well. Tots seems like high floor, low ceiling food but they are very popular here and they're good. I personally like cubano and turkey avocado sandwich but you can't go wrong. The service has been always been super friendly and any time they made a mistake, they went out of their way make things right. The space is small and tables are first come, first service so if you come on a Saturday night, expect to stake out and wait for a table. They also offer take home beers for $1 deposit. You pick a beer and then they fill a mason jar for you to take home. However you do not get the $1 back you return the jar but you don't have to pay $1 again if you ever get take home beer again. Parking is limited so I recommend using ride share services! read more
