The server didn't bring us anything to dip the fries in and when we asked it took 10 minutes to get it. Came here for a date night...made a reservation in advance, but were seated on the patio at a small table by the front door which barely was big enough to hold our drinks. Super slow service...1.5 hours to get our food...45 minutes to get our drinks. We asked for water and never got it. The table beside us, which arrived 5 minutes after us still didn't have their food as we left after 2+ hours there. My cocktail was bad (a lemon drop shouldn't be in a glass like this, should have sugar rim and should actually taste like a lemon drop)...it did not match the description listed in the menu at all. We were bummed because we really wanted to love this place as it is close to our house. The food was decent...but I just couldn't get past the bad service. I should mention too that this is the 2nd time we came here and sadly our first experience, although a year ago was almost identical to this experience. The only thing we were disappointed was that due to their restaurant being so busy, they ran out of all the apps and soup we wanted to order. We will come back again to try the apps we wanted. The Blue Jay blue cheese burger at Spade and Spatula is amazing (wagyu beef patty, gorgonzola crumble, balsamic glaze, candied bacon, garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato). Wagyu beef comes from Japanese cows that are fed a special diet.  The beef is a different color from regular hamburger meat, and it tastes much different and much better. I wanted to love this place but left being incredibly unimpressed. Before I dig in I do want to mention the service was fantastic and our waiter was attentive and really seemed to care. But alas great service isn't enough to have me come back. Let's start shall we. As we arrived I noticed a sign that we should be patient as all food is cooked to order and takes 15-30 mins. Not a problem, a little odd for breakfast but willing to overlook. In reality it took nearly 60 mins for us to get our breakfast sandwiches and our side of potatoes weren't ready for another 10 mins after we got our sandwiches! Sadly the food just wasn't good, the breakfast sandwiches were just meh and nothing special about them. Our potatoes that took forever to come out were undercooked and flavorless. The ambiance in the restaurant is fine but nothing to write home about. We're visiting from L.A and staying in nearby Crestline and know full and well that good restaurants around here are hard to come by. We were a bit torn and hesitant to try Spade and Spatula after reading some of the negative reviews, but also reading SO many good ones. But after reading the menu and seeing so many vegetarian options, we wanted to give it a go. SO glad we did. We arrived just before closing on a Thursday night, and although we had made reservations for the patio (dog friendly!) we didn't need them as we were the only ones outside. The lovely (Hola, Sr Venezuela ) host/sever/runner/busser seated us promptly and was very attentive and friendly throughout our meal. We ordered the spicy vegetarian burger (absolutely delish!) with handcut fries, side salad, vegan nuggets and strawberry lemonade (it's especially good- perfect balance, not too sweet!) Everything we ordered was on point: fresh, flavorful, delicious and came out quickly. We devoured it all! We understand guests have noted they had a problem with wait times and slower service, but I really hope people will give the chef and staff some grace. The restaurant industry is gruelling, and these folx have withstood some tough roads. What a hidden gem! Came for a late Sunday brunch and what a treat. We had just missed a rush at around 1:30pm, which was good because the restaurant maybe has a 50 person occupancy. Our server recommended the Bloody Mary due to the fresh, homemade sauce or the bottomless mimosas, both great choices but with a drive home ahead, went with the Bloody Mary- it was perfect, flavorful and balanced. For food we tried the breakfast Sammie, talk about an explosion of flavor, the fig and cheese combination are amazing, it's one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a while; and the eggs Benedict, also spectacular. Just came back from a 2-hour dinner and feel compelled to share our unexpectedly pleasant time at S&S. From fried pickles to salmon salad, S&S stays true to the quality. Fried pickles come with its own house ranch dressing and aioli sauce you won't find anywhere else. We (a party of 8) used the sauce for S&S's signature hand-cut and perfectly cooked fries. Salmon salad comes with a large piece of golden/crispy salmon. Each piece of lettuce maintained the firmness you need to taste the freshness. Cucumbers and red onions had their own sweetness that you wouldn't expect just by looking at them. S&S's massive chocolate cake and beignets, along with french press (decaffenated) coffee, sealed the deal. The waitress was so welcoming and informative throughout our 2-hour dinner. They had very basic beers and the tap was apparently broken, the beers they had were bottled and was basically a standard list you'd find at any place that serves beer. The food is good, but good Lord make sure you have 2+ hours to order/eat because it does take long to come out. The server was nice, tried to make up for the slow service, but it was just a crazy wait time for what we ordered and was essentially blamed on what we had ordered which wasn't the case, as the items we ordered were not prepared/delivered the way we had ordered them. The table behind us also got their food before us and it seemed to me the chef needed additional help in the kitchen. One drink that was ordered was way too strong as well. The staff is plenty nice and accommodating as can be, food fine, but service and lag time as well as cocktail strength need to be retouched on. read more
