I work and live fairly close and I've dined here with friends several times. This is a breakfast and lunch cafe with a decent menu selection - definitely traditional American fare. The interior is comfortable, new, clean and well maintained. I've had one breakfast that was simply fair. Every other meal - breakfast, salad or sandwich - has been good to very good. I have never heard of a bad meal from any of my friends or co-workers. Excellent flavor, good-sized portions, fast to the table and served at the right temperature. This is an excellent, well managed kitchen and the food is a great value. But this place is VERY BUSY and the service staff, while friendly, is not up to the standards set by the kitchen. When multiple customers are waiting, empty tables need to be bussed quickly - the bus staff here seems stuck in second gear. More importantly, lunch customers who have been waiting 10 minutes are not thrilled to see a bussed table sit empty for 5 minutes. I routinely have to ask for missing side dishes - it's gotten so commonplace, I no longer bother. I want to like this restaurant. Obviously, Spencer's chose a great location and they are very busy, but the service staff needs to step up a notch for me to give them a 4 or 5 star rating. read more

Spencer's is one of my family's favorite breakfast to go places. Everytime we go we feel welcomed and the staff always has a smile on their faces. The food is delicious. I love the Swedish breakfast. It comes with eggs, bacon, sausage, hash brown or country potatoes and pancakes with strawberries. Lori is a sweet heart and always gives us great customer. I recommend this restaurant. read more

This used to be one of our favorite lunch spots. But the last several times the service has been horrible. Today we waited for 20 minutes to be seated. The worst part, was there were (5) empty booths and only (2) parties waiting... The service here is terrible. My grandpa wanted his toast cut a certain way, the waitress then called him "weird". He ignored her comment then proceeded to order his Chile verde with no cheese and hash browns. She brought him Chile verde with cheese and country potatoes. We waited ten minutes for her to bring more coffee. So we had to ask another waitress, we then asked her if she could call a manager so we could file a complaint. Our waitress was the manager on duty, she approached our table rudely and aggressively. She then said we were making fun of her. We eat here very often. The food is reasonably priced, service is good and it is consistently good quality. They have lunch specials that vary. A few weeks ago my wife got a taco salad and it was like a nacho with a little something more (not to greasy at all). Today, I had the tri-tip sandwich and the wife had the fish a chips. We also shared a small bowl of veggie soup. The sandwich was perfection. I could only eat half and took the rest home for later. Meat was cooked well (not pink, but not dry), the bread was a fresh soft roll, it had perfectly melted cheese and my favorite an ajuoe dipping sauce (sure I spelled that wrong). I have to admit our fries were a little overcooked; if we weren't in a hurry I would have sent then back, but they were still good. My wife got fish and chips. Again, a very hearty portion! Really good, not greasy, big cuts of fish (not fishy) and a perfect tarter sauce. As always, they offer w complimentary desert with your meal. I had sherbet, and the wife had peach cobbler. I usually get bread pudding because it's my favorite. Our usual order is chicken fried steak (the breakfast-not the lunch) w/ biscuits and gravy!!! It's served all day. My wife likes the all y can eat salad and soup with the yummy cornbread. I was in town visiting and my parents had mentioned they'd tried this new place for breakfast by their house. We decided to go on a Sunday morning and we had 5 and a baby in our group. I was a little confused by the placement of this new restaurant (behind Target, next to the UPS store) but once you walk in, it's the cutest little place. There are plenty of smaller tables available, but there aren't many big tables for groups, so plan accordingly. It was fairly busy, but my parents had put their name in earlier and we were seated shortly after our later arrival. The menu has much to offer and prices are fantastic. I decided on the French toast breakfast plate with eggs and bacon. Once my hot plate came out a short time after we ordered, there was so much on it, but I ate nearly the entire thing. The French toast was big, chewy, crunchy and so tasty. The coffee was also pretty good. I will definitely come back here with my parents when visiting. read more

Called to order breakfast burritos for pick up. Ordered two burritos and the total was 26$. Ok so 13$ a burrito. These things must be good! Nope. Picked them up and they were smothered in enchilada sauce with olives on top. Weird but ok I can get past that. I started to eat and it was nothing but potatoes and eggs with tiny bits of meat. Ate here for lunch today. Had the avocado burger with fries because the waitress said the potato salad was store bought, not home made. Noticed that the burger was pre formed, so that means frozen. It was like Costco opened up a cafe. If they get all their food pre made, why would anyone give these people great reviews. I think the people of Bakersfield live up to their name as the most uneducated city, which allows restaurants to serve pre maid food and gouge these poor ignorant citizens. Maybe their breakfast is better, but if you have to pay someone to cook an egg and fry store bought hash browns, and then charge you $12.00, I feel you are in the right city. read more

Here on the east side, we don't have a lot of really good cafe style places other than Denny's really. We have been long time Spencer's fans and would often go to the Rosedale or the White Lane location when we lived in that area. So when we saw they were opening a location in the East Hills Mall area, we were excited. We went on a Sunday morning around 9am. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. We knew being a Sunday morning we would have to wait a little and we did. This location is on the smaller side. Once seated, our waitress with a big friendly smiled took our drink order. They have a pretty big selection on the breakfast menu with additional selections on their specials menu. My husband and I decided to split the chili verde burrito and a waffle. I was impressed with how busy they were and how fast our food came out. I was also impressed at how attentive our waitress even though she had a ton of tables she was working. The chili verde burito was very large. The chili verde itself was very tasty and had a great flavor. My husband and I are big chili verde fans and are picky about it. It was surprising to get such a good flavored chili verde at a cafe. It was comparable to some of the best we have had at local Mexican restaurants. The waffle was also perfectly cooked; golden brown, fluffy, and had that little touch of crunch when you first cut into it. Perfect! I noticed before we were seated that they took out their outdoor seating area. I don't know if that is permanent or just for the colder months. Hopefully not permanent so there is more seating area. I also noticed that they are only open for breakfast and lunch. We will be back to try out all the other things that peaked our interest. read more

The best bargain are the senior deals, still lots of food and a beverage included in the under $10 category. I am curious about future plans for the east side location, will they open up the patio and will they serve dinner someday, one can only hope. After waiting 40 minutes......we left and went to Denny's! Yes, there were people waiting - however, people who came after us were seated before us. When I went to check after 30 minutes how much longer the wait was the girl looked on a list with all 2-people waiting-to-be-seated sign-ups...and I was told there were 6 more before us!! There weren't any couples (or other 2 people) waiting!! I think a list was made for 2 people to-be-seated, and those people were seated only at tables with 2 chairs! Those people waited and waited ...and finally went home! Finally, several 2-chair-tables were empty - a large group family was seated and the extra tables were pulled to the larger table to fit everyone in! When I asked why other people were seated before us the girl couldn't give an answer - only that she seated according to her list! She could tell I was close to exploding and she assured me that we were next! At that point I didn't want to be seated any more and we left! I totally understand that 2 people would not be seated at the larger family-tables (always prime!) - however - to seat 3 people at a table with 4 chairs and ignore 2 people who were there first is very bad training! We really love to eat at Spencer's - sadly, it only takes one time to leave a bad taste in your mouth. read more

I walked into this place on Christmas eve. Before they closed! Before I could even say a word to the host, the older waitress behind her rudely and loudly said, "no more that's it I'm done" First of all it was just me, second I only wanted a salad, nothing to cook lady, and third never talk so rudely about an approaching customer where they can here you! Teach your employees some customer service and some good old fashion manners. The other two times I was in the food was ok. I had to ask for a clean fork and a clean cup. I had the chicken sandwhich. It was ok but almost cold to the touch. So besides having dirty dishes and a cold sandwhich. The rude waitress just lost a customer. read more

The food here is good, but not quite as tasty as the Rosedale location, in my opinion. I've had good service here and not so good service, and sometimes you have to wait for a table, because this location is small and usually packed. This cafe has the BEST COFFEE I've ever had at a restaurant! Brewed strong, fresh and hot- I'm a happy customer. The food is standard, stick-to-your-ribs, American fare; portions are big. Poor customer service. When we walked in the hostess was busy and didn't pay any attention to us. Others walked in after and also waited. When she finally acknowledged people were waiting she started helping someone that came in after us. We were patient but let her know she skipped us. No acknowledgement that we were skipped over, no apology, nothing. Then our waitress was not very friendly until we asked for the check. My guess is that when we start thinking about tips.
