It is definitely Fine Dining, in all caps. I think Spencer's is one of those special occasion restaurants, and we love to do staycations here in Spokane - so we checked into the Double Tree, and headed to dinner. The dim lighting, the tranquil vibes, the fact that it wasn't too busy but we were serviced accordingly...all the things that make a dining experience were awesome. My champagne had glitter in it and I am not sure why I love that so much, but I did. We had some really delicious food the entire time. The lobster was insane. It was cooked to perfection and so delicious. The side of duck I ordered was also really really tasty. Fresh and flavorful, our salads were on point, the drinks kept coming, and my husband got a steak that we cannot pronounce nor afford on a regular basis. That was really tasty too! This is the 2nd time I have been disappointed with the food or service; my son just ordered room service - average price per person - including children = $25; beautifully served, but my hamburger was black (burned) on one side! Last year on the 4th of July weekend, the service was very slow due to under-staffing. A staff person told me they would take care of it by giving my son a complimentary entree or somehow take care of it last weekend; he stays at Doubletree on a regular basis - (every time he visits Spokane with his family), so it would be nice if you did that for him. My wife and I ate here for the first-time last week, celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary. We were greeted by friendly staff when we arrived. There is the feel and look of a classic high-end steak house; the prices are accordingly then. The waiter was friendly and took our wine order right away and brought out hot bread to nibble on. Mary started with French onion soup which was good but very heavy on the onions and lite on the cheese. I had the broiled beef steak tomatoes; sliced tomatoes, balsamic dressing, and mozzarella cheese; the dish was under the broiler to long and the cheese was crusted and hard, the tomatoes and balsamic were tasty. Mary had King salmon which was tasty and perfectly cooked; salmon is very easy to overcook, but this was not, nice job. My filet minion was cooked as ordered and very tender. I had a side of mushrooms that were tasty. As we were getting up to leave, we learned that dessert is on the house for anniversaries, but we were on our way to a concert so no time for that; it would have been nice to know that up front. It's with a heavy heart that I have to score this restaurant so low. I had such high hopes for a great date night and meal but I was so disappointed. My husband and I had reservations last night at 7:30 and were seated right away. However it took forever for us to receive any service. Another waiter other than our own had to come over to open our wine. I don't think our waiter (Didio) came over until well after 8. Our food was incredibly slow to arrive, in fact not until after 9. We had a show to be at starting at 9:30 so we had to eat incredibly fast to make it. We had shared with the waiter that we were celebrating my 40th Birthday and he made no effort to make us feel special or enhance our experience. I would be in no rush to go back. read more

Happy hour at Spencer's made me pretty happy for a couple hours. I came for the pre-six-o'clock discounts, stayed for dinner, and left tipsy and full. It's easily the best meal I've ever eaten at a Double Tree Hotel. A draft beer of whatever the Beer 'o da Day was started the happiness while a few rounds of Gin & Tonic got me through dinner. What's the point of eating at a hotel bar/restaurant if you can't take advantage of the "I ain't driving" as a hotel guest excuse, right? Two bowls of piping hot goodness kept the happy times rolling. White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Candied Bacon ($8.50) was cheesier than Nicolas Cage ... and probably whiter, too. If the Mac 'n Cheese is close to a must order then the Six Onion Soup with Sourdough Croutons and melted Gruyere Crust ($9) is a must order. The thick cheese cap protecting the warm onion soup is chewy soup fun. By the time my steak dinner arrived, I was already getting stuffed, but an American (Lindsay Ranch) Kobe-style Tri-Tip Sirloin Steak with a side of Steamed Broccolini ($22) was a decent cut of meat (Medium). I've had better steaks ... of course, this steak was half the price of those steaks, too. Few hotel restaurants can be deemed destination dining, but Spencer's for Steaks and Chops may actually reach that level in Spokane, WA. If you are staying at the Double Tree there really is no reason not to take advantage of happy hour and/or dinner for drinks, a steak, and some cheesy appetizers. read more

Went to dinner following a theatre performance. It is within walking distance of the venue. The food is good, though a bit pricey. The ambiance was lovely. However, the service was impeccable. Pretty disappointed in this place that had a advertised and raved about happy hour. We came in as a group of 6 and inquired about happy hour, after being seated in the dining area, it took awhile for us to be served. A few people got drinks, but once we asked about the happy hour menu, our server seemed to go downhill. He said there wasn't one offered, at all, which we later found out wasn't true, but we had to be seated in the bar. Why the hostess sat us in the dining area when we clearly wanted happy hour is beyond me. We instead got some bread, a hashed brown baked thing, and some salads. The wait staff was friendly without being bothersome and they seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs. Clean establishment, dark with lots of big wood furniture, typical steakhouse feel, very nice. Their crab cakes were delicious! Not dry, not full of breadcrumbs, just full of fresh real crab. Ok, the bread they bring you, it's like brushed in butter with salt and herbs on it... its delicious and savory, meanwhile the bread itself is soft and pillowy and warm. The calamari is seasoned well and was nice and crunchy, not soggy at all! Steak. Aged 21 days and cooked in their 1600 degree broiler until a perfect medium rare. Cool, great, amazing. Literally the best steak I have ever had. I had the boneless rib eye with a bearnaise and crab meat on top. The server even asked us to cut into our steaks in front of her to make sure they were done perfectly. This steak melted in my mouth. It was perfectly cooked and had amazing flavors. It was like someone brushed it in melted butter that was infused with fresh crab. It is on the spendy side, but that's what you get if you want very high quality steaks. Cons: The burger was so over-cooked it had more in common with a hockey puck than a hamburger and the bun was so stale it was tough to get through. When I pay $25 for a burger (delivery and gratuity included), I expect attention to detail. I expect excellence. I came to Spokane on business and was booked into the Double Tree. I did my research and was going to go all out and dine the next night in the restaurant and order a wonderful steak. But after that burger, I was not willing to risk dropping that kind of cash for a sub-par steak meal. The waitstaff is incredibly slow. When it takes 1.5-2 hours for two people to order drinks and food, receive food/drinks, eat, and pay, that's pretty bad. The place wasn't even crowded. Even worse, they have an antiquated and inappropriate quote painted above the bar: "For a good dinner and a gentle wife you can afford to wait." A gentle wife? Two of my coworkers recommended Spencer's fo steaks and they certainly did not disappoint. Our table was ready when we arrived 30 minutes early. Our server, Didio, was attentive without being overbearing. He answered our questions knowledgeably and correctly. I started with a classic cocktail, Whisky Sour. Extremely smooth, you could sense the bourbon without it being too much. The Dried Cherry/Blue Cheese Salad was tasty, yet for me there was a bit too much balsamic which overrode the flavor of the salad itself. Nadia had a classic Caesar Salad to start and it was done quite well! For main course we both had the Zabuton steak (a Kobe cut) and it was done perfectly in both cases. We split the sides of sautéed spinach and "loaded" hash browns and they were simply delightful! Jenny's may claim the best hash browns in town but that's their opinion, for me these are it! The Zinfandel from the Columbia Valley served as a perfect complement to the food. Desert for me was bread pudding with a combination of white and milk chocolate with cherry sauce. Could not have been better. Price point was high, but they definitely gave good value for the money! We will be returning! read more

Jon Taffer where are you? I don't give out one star reviews very often but when I do, it is to warn others to stay away or notify management that they have a problem. In this case it is the latter. We stopped in tonight for a drink and a bite to eat. We sat in the bar area for happy hour. I travel to Spokane for business quite often and have eaten at Spencer's a hand full of times. The food and service has always really good until now. I wanted to share the awesome brown sugar bacon stick that comes on the wedge salad with my girlfriend. This was her first time to Spokane and she loves all things bacon. The bartender told me that Spencer's has never had such a dish and I must be mistaken. No I am not mistaken, I have had that dish here three times in the past but it has been a year since I have been here. I thought maybe they took it off the menu and the bartender is new so I let it slide. We ordered drinks and started to browse the menu. My girlfriend ordered a Mai Tai since that is her go to drink while dinning out. What she received was not a Mai Tai. It was a sour, lemony drink that gives you pucker face as soon as you taste it. When the bartender returned to take our order we sent the drink back telling her that was not a Mai Tai. She actually argued with us saying it is supposed to be sour and we were mistaken again. No, she is mistaken. I travel for work constantly and have had Mai Tai's all over the Pacific. My girlfriend and I have both lived in Hawaii for a period of time. I think we know what a Mai Tai is supposed to taste like. Certainly not like a liquid warheads jawbreaker. By now she has done a good job pissing me off so we asked for the check so we can go. She then went on a rant of how it would cost her more to ring up the one drink that to just void the whole ticket. We got up and left. It appears that this bartender is in need of some remedial customer service and drink crafting training. Maybe she was just having a bad day. I don't know. But in any case I will help by providing a proper Mai Tai recipe below. 1.5 ounce spiced rum 1.5 ounce coconut rum 1 tsp grenadine syrup 3 ounces pineapple juice 2 ounces orange juice (One variation is adding a tsp of almond extract.) In a cocktail mixer full of ice, combine ingredients, shake well and strain into a class full of ice. Garnish with a wedge of pineapple. read more

Sat at a booth right across from the bar as the bar only had 6 other people in it so it wasn't busy. Three different servers including the bar tender saw us sit down and no one bothered to come over to greet us or let us know they would be with us shortly. Sat for 10 min was getting ready to leave when a waiter came by and seemed extremely put out to have to help us. Dropped menus and took another 10 min to come back. The food menu/prices are very standard for steakhouses and so far the two meals I've had (steak/prime rib) have been fantastic. I didn't even attempt to eat here, I'm a guest at the hotel and after my first night of work I showed up at 9:50 looking for an adult beverage, I was aware that they closed at 10, I was thinking I could get a drink and take it to my room. I inquired about this and the bartender looked at her watch and with a very heavy sigh told me she would serve me one. This was 5/7/19. With that attitude I asked if they had what I drank and was told no they didn't and but they had a substandard substitute, at this point I declined any service from this rude bartender. There was exactly one seat at the bar with plenty of folks buying overpriced cocktails but the bartender was closing anyways. I took my wallet and thirst up the street a block an got fantastic service and decided I would only be paying for my room at the hotel and would take ALL of my food and beverage business elsewhere and am glad I did so. Hands down best steak house in downtown. I was part of a large speaker presentation in the banquet room @ Spencers. We dined on several dishes and I am eager to share our experience and I have a feeling this wasn't a fluke :) We started dinner with drinks/crab cakes. These crab cakes were lightly browned and were full of real crab, not krab. The cake was a slightly dense, tasty appetizer. The serving didn't provide enough tartar sauce so if you ENJOY dipping sauces you better order extra. The dinner salad was delightful, nice flavored mixed greens topped with blue cheese crumbles, dried cranberries, walnuts or peanuts (I don't recall) including a nice balsamic dressing. Main course was the 12 oz ribeye, this is a nice size meat portion for the meat tasting fanatics. The steak came out perfectly prepared and with a great balance of grill flavor and salt/seasoning. The meat was aged to perfection, cuts easily with the butter knife and is well-marbled with fat--this is not a bad thing, knowing that ribeye contains a higher percentage of fats versus the filet. I have been taught that fat has a great flavor and I appreciate that. Sides included home style mashed yellow potatoes, nice and lumpy like granny's holiday recipe. Broccoli was crisp, firm, and tasted fresh. The presentation was well done as the broccoli had ample shredded parmigiana. Warm bread was also presented before the main courses came out. Once finished we tasted the chocolate naughty cake with salted caramel ice cream scoop. I must admit the ice cream was delicious and the cake was very strong in the chocolate department but I am biased as I do not enjoy chocolate. I had the cream brûlée which was accompanied by a frozen white chocolate covered spoon. The handle was clear of any chocolate if anyone had the wrong idea. This custard is thick, very rich and has a nice thick crust of caramelized sugar on the top. Everything smelled good, looked good and tasted good. I'm not a huge red meat eater these days we all keep nutrition in mind. A night of splurge is a great idea to visit Spencers. I would return anytime, the valet service is tips only for the food customers :0) We left the building with smiles and tasty memories. read more

Spencer's doesn't really belong in Spokane. This is a high end steak house that you should be finding in a large city, don't get me wrong I am happy it is here, but it seems out of place. Spencer's is just like a Ruth Chris's, Smith & Wollensky's or a Morton's. You are paying for high-end USDA Prime Beef that has been grass fed and aged. If you can tell the difference between Choice vs Prime, grass vs grain fed or high vs low marbling then you will enjoy Spencer's and think they offer a good product for the price. If on the other hand a steak is a steak, then you probably will find nothing special here. What is interesting about high end steak houses is that many times they have the best fish too and interestingly Spencer's has the freshest that I have found in Spokane, the selection of non-red meat is limited but all of it is good. Steaks are cooked properly the first time, sides are excellent and desserts are great. Service is excellent, all in all they are expensive, but they are worth it. read more
