This has become a regular spot for my coworkers and I when we are looking for a good place to eat. The staff is always so friendly and service is generally pretty quick. If you're looking for some great country- home style cooking this is the place to stop. The breakfasts are delicious and they have a a variety of lunch fair to try. The service that we received was mostly from the other persons working there. We had some left overs, and I wanted to ask for a container. She had placed our check right after the food was served, never came back to ask if we needed anything else. There was difference of service from what was happening a neighboring booth, she did ask them if they wanted anything else, one asked for a coffee cup to go, "he got a tall coffee cup". So...this is my first Bako review for, like the first time in forever (ok, ok, I'll quit quoting Frozen). This is a classic breakast-brunch-diner joint. I didn't expect much from the exterior, but the interior was clean and modern. This place was PACKED on a Friday morning brunch, but good thing my friends got a table for us ahead of time. I've been on a weight loss mission, which means I completely deconstruct any of the hearty breakfast offerings on the menu and rebuild it with substitutes that make the dish almost unrecognizable from its former glory. Usually, the servers eye roll and tell me that they can't accommodate, but Spencer's was very good about it. I made the denver omelette with reduced ham and egg whites only, subbed fruit for country potatoes, and skipped my usual biscuits with gravy. Oh, the travesty. My friends had amazing looking dishes like the chile verde and corned beef hash. The portions were large and not meant to finish in a single sitting, unless you have a 4,000+ daily caloric requirement. The coffee flowed freely and the servers checked on us often. Well...as a newcomer to town we were looking for a breakfast spot. When we arrived there were about 12 people waiting, and the reception area was in chaos. We watched one table ask about his seat and he was told he was forgotten. The party of 5 (and a child) waiting next to us had been waiting for over 20 minutes. We were seated within ten minutes. We over heard the hostess state that she did not know how to make change (another employee was trying to help her make change which entailed ten cents, somehow) so I assumed that she might have been new. However, I'm not even sure how to explain what happened next. She called my husband's name, and I walked toward her (smiling). Not a hello, not an acknowledgement, not a "follow me". Nothing. She just turned on her heel and started walking to a table. When she got to the table, she turned around and just stood there with her eyebrow raised and, (you gotta trust me here, this isn't just my opinion) quite possibly the most inconvenienced, snotty attitude I may have ever seen in the hospitality field. She seated us and took our drink orders. When the beverages came, as she was putting them on the table, I asked her if she could have the table wiped. (Still crumbs and water rings from the last guests). She sighed and started to pick up the drinks again. I said, "You can leave them there, that's okay" and she just looked at me with a rude and disgusted look on her face, and said, (I couldn't make this up if I tried) "How am I supposed to wipe off the table with your drinks sitting on it?" After a brief moment wondering if I'd landed in an SNL skit... I said, "We'll be glad to pick them up for you". She turned on her heel (again, the attitude... wow) and returned with a very wet rag, picked up the menus (we picked up the beverages for her) and left the table soaking wet, slapped the menus down on the table, and walked away. Not a word. So... I get that you might be new, and not know how to make change or try to figure out how to wipe down a table with drinks on it, but the attitude and rudeness was ridiculous. And long painted fingernails in food service is a little off-putting. Fortunately, the waitress was super friendly, very cute sense of humor (probably Bakersfield grown and raised as it has been our experience that most people we encounter in our new home town are genuinely friendly) and saved the day. The meal was fairly good -The Santa Barbara was a tasty omelette. Generous portion sizes. Buuuuutttt.... the haughty hostess didn't end there. At the end of our meal, we brought the check over to her. Not a smile, not a "Can I help you?" She just stood there with her hand out to take the check, processed the payment (fortunately for her, it was a credit card) and managed to do the whole thing with the rudest, snot-nosed attitude I think I can say I've ever encountered in food service. I was dying (of laughter, actually) and had to leave. According to my husband, she said, "Thank you" at the end. Seriously, they should can that kid. We came in as a party of 5 and needed special seating because we had one person on crutches and another with a walker. We were seated quickly and drinks were brought immediately. The server was very sweet and helpful. I had ham and eggs with biscuit and gravy. The ham was delicious and amazing biscuits and gravy. Everyone was very happy with their food! This is my usual early morning breakfast joint. It's very close to my home and the food and service is consistently good. Sometimes if you get there after 7AM you may have to wait a little bit for a table and sometimes it takes awhile for the food to come out. Come here at anytime between 6AM and 6:30AM and you won't run into those problems however. I haven't been here for any other meal than breakfast but I have heard some favorable things about their BBQ. I usually get the standard breakfast fare off eggs, hash browns, sausage or bacon and wheat toast. They do have some really good chicken fried steak here and you can't go wrong with getting their biscuits and gravy instead of toast with just about every breakfast option. I try to stay away from that stuff just because I feel like a fat pig after wards but it is a good option every once in awhile. The coffee here is not bad either. It isn't free as one reviewer thought it might be. If I remember correctly it is $1.79, which is about as free as you're going to get these days however. read more

This diner is just around the corner from our house, but we are frequents of Pappys. However on this occasion, we needed dinner and decided to give it a try. Getting seated was quick and easy and while the place is clearly older, is in pretty good shape. We sat for an easy five+ minutes before our server came to get our order. This slow service remained a trend the rest of the evening, despite the restaurant being nowhere near capacity. I ordered a two egg breakfast, while my husband got a bacon sourdough burger. The only part of my breakfast that was good were the eggs. The gravy was over peppered and tasted burnt and hash browns were flavorless and mushy. My husbands burger came out over cooked, missing bacon and just not very good. The fries were okay. The service was terrible. I had to finally get up and go to the register to ask for our check. Our waitress even when requested, took quite some time to print it out. Overall, I think there are MANY other, better diner type options in Bakersfield. We won't be back. read more

When I tried to convey this problem to the waitress, it just became an argument so I let it be. Too hungry and tired to argue with an unprofessional, bitter and inept waitress. She even rolled her eyes when my adult daughter asked for a take home box. Nothing worse than working all day and craving a good meal, only to be disappointed beyond measure. Ate here today for the first time in a long time. It was packed as usual but I agree with Les L. that something has changed. We both ordered Cheeseburgers and although they were good, the buns were very stale and chewy and the vegetables tasted old as if they may have been prepared the day before. New chef? New management? This place is usually fairly busy when I drive by. There was little wait. The waitresses are the true superstars of this place! They are so sweet, kind, attentive and helpful! We went for breakfast and had pretty good biscuits and gravy. Biscuits were huge and not enough gravy. The coffee was pretty good, which explains the seniors. The eggs were ok, not spectacular. Mexicali omlette was a good mix and idea, but the Yucatan food service guac and Ore Ida frozen hash browns made me feel like I could have made it at home better with salsa. Veggies could be cut bigger so I can actually taste them. The meat was pretty good, we'll cooked and seasoned! My biggest issue was the manager, he has a one track mind and won't take a moment to be personal or attentive to the customers. Just gives them what they want, and no thank you come again. Where do I start? We came here for my birthday, there was seven of us. We were seated quickly, which was great! We were sat in a private room. We asked for a high chair and it was all sticky. The guy brought me another one, which was great. I ordered a mimosa and received a dirty glass. I felt bad requesting another one because the high chair was also dirty. I ended up with a clean glass. My brother-in-law ordered a Bloody Mary and waited so long he knew they had forgotten it. He had to ask twice for it. The worst part was the servers were all taking their breaks in there too. So I seriously felt like I was in a break room. They were of course talking among themselves. And there was another server rolling flatware in there. It seriously felt like a break room. I wasn't comfortable talking out loud with them in there. Our service was horrible, the waitress was like blah with us. And I felt like we were an inconvenience to her. This was my second time going. My first time was just fine! My waitress was amazing! It was just two of us, so we sat in a booth. It really sucks that my second experience was so horrible. This is my regular breakfast joint. The service is fast and friendly. The food is significantly better than the chain breakfast joints. It's a little like Cheers with the same regulars in there every day. But, that is part of the charm. Yes as someone said, there are lots of Senior Citizens, but what a great group of seniors they are. There are also middle aged people and a good chunk of 20-30 types. Everyone is nice and seems pretty happy with the experience. If you are looking for a world class Eggs Benedict served on a fresh crab cake, this isn't your place. I went with my family around 10AM after we attended church. It was pretty packed, but it was also the 4th of July weekend. Despite the crowd, we were seated relatively quickly (about 10-15 minutes). The service is pretty good. The food is even better. My family raves about the food, and now I can understand why. I got the broiled tri tip breakfast, and albeit a little dry, it was good. The biscuits and gravy, however, really made the meal. The biscuit was big and buttery and the gravy was smooth and delicious. The butter it came with was a guilty pleasure addition, as well. The prices are a bit steep (around $9-$10), but you get a decent amount of food that is both filling and yummy. I'd definitely come back when I'm in town again. read more

A pretty good place to go for an American breakfast. The decor is kind of old and unexciting but the food is good. It can get pretty crowded on a weekend morning, so be prepared to wait a bit. I've had a few different things, but I really l loved the Eggs Benedict! The hollandaise is great, and it comes with avocado on the side...yum! Their biscuits and gravy are fantastic too. Coffee is decent, and I am pretty sure it's free. The waitress this morning who waited on us must have been having another bad day because it was the 2nd time she waited on us. We had bad service from her the first time she waited on us. This time she rarely came by to check on what we needed. We had to ask a different waitress to pour us some coffee. When our waitress AMBER finally came by and asked if we were doing well, we let her know that we were now ok since the other waitress helped us. AMBER gave us attitude. The waitress made multiple trips just to bring 4 meals. She didn't communicate this, she walked away and was gone for several min.
