You know, I have been here several times and I'm never really impressed. Their chicken and waffles don't have nothing on others, including Roscoe's. Their oxtails however are amazing but they're so expensive I never order them. Most of their sides have pork in them, so I never order any. I was told by a friend that they were now offering breakfast or brunch so we decided to give them another try. Imagine my surprise when I got there and nope...no breakfast or brunch menu. I was really craving eggs but there was none on the menu. Instead of leaving I decided to go with the red snapper and fries since I am not a fan of catfish. Unfortunately I believe they served me catfish anyway and instead of saying anything I just ate it. The fries looked spectacular but lacked flavor. They just tasted like cooked potatoes. I also got the fried green beans which were just ok. My daughter got the chicken sandwich and ate one bite. I don't think anything was wrong with the sandwich she wasn't impressed by their menu at all and wanted to leave from the beginning but I made her order something so that's my fault. I don't think I'll be coming back to give them yet another chance to impress me. Too bad we still don't have a good soul food place in town except a food truck. I really would love to be able to sit down and eat a good plate of greens without pork and some bomb red beans and rice and fried RED SNAPPER. Maybe in another decade or so...

We've visited Moms House for many years- it was one of my moms favorite places to eat, where she could get "home" style cooking- she missed her North Carolina food. Today, we decided to stay in and take a day to relax and ordered breakfast through Instacart- I was glad to see Moms House as an option. They had several buy one get one deals- totally affordable, prices not jacked to double or triple in store prices. At first sight, I thought the French toast might be disappointing- it was not. It is not the thick Texas toast- the custard was soaked through it and wasn't bready- really nice cinnamon flavor. Good job. Loaded biscuits and gravy- the biscuit- you should really sell biscuits by the dozen. Potatoes- so flavorful and cooked well. Egg- scrambled- fine. Gravy- really nice sausage gravy. Food was packaged well. I've heard there is now a coffee bar inside- I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Mom's house was great! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Headed there on a Friday night to meet up with our book club, we were able to sit together in the back and let me tell you the place was full![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There were lots of people also picking up. The menu is true southern cooking with amazing flavors. I got the fried catfish, mac and cheese and sweet potato's. It was all so good, my favorite place for fried catfish in Bakersfield. If you're looking for comfort food with large portions this is the place. Our huge group all had nothing but great things to say. 10/10!

The food was wonderful, the best barbecue we've had in a long time. Service was great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Lots of seating, it's really cute inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Well I haven't been to Mom's house in a while I mean it's been years I remember when this spot used to be on the Ming avenue and Stine but it's been a long time since I've been in this spot on Rosedale [[HIGHLIGHT]]it's changed a lot in the last few years it's not as Urban when I walked in you can tell this difference in the atmosphere[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I mean you still got the same pictures and all that good stuff it's just atmosphere a little different you walk in there [[HIGHLIGHT]]you can tell by the music to explain it but that's okay no big deal it's just different[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] the customer service is on point like always and I can't say the food is still on point catfish is good macaroni and cheese is on point and I'm collard greens they're almost as good as mamas but hey close enough had to pork chops smothered and gravy they were definitely on point so if you want those hey go grab those up but overall it was actually okay I mean there's not too many soul food restaurants in town so I commend them for staying open so if you can get food at your own Mama's house I guess it's the best spot to get it if you can't make it yourself prices are a little high though I can't say that 19 bucks for smothered pork chops at two sides that is kind of high but hey it's all good definitely going to go back again and it won't take me two or three years ago back

Stopped at this soul food restaurant on my way driving through Bakersfield. What a good decision! Here's the quick summary: Parking: abundant Location: shopping center on corner Prices: decent, as expected Serving sizes: in my opinion, you get a good amount of food Service: we did takeout and waited about 20 mins; servers seemed nice Decor: LOVE!!! This place is definitely built on faith with Bible verses displayed everywhere. Feels like grandma's home Taste: the fried catfish and shrimp were DELICIOUS!!! I'm dairy-free and meat-free (besides occasionally having seafood) so I can't say anything about most of the sides and other meats. The batter for the seafood is delicious! Definitely a great place to patronize!

If you are looking for legitimate, soul-warming comfort food in Bakersfield, you have to stop by Mom's House. I've been hunting for the best Southern-style cooking in the area, and this place finally ended the search! I ordered the Fried Catfish and it was easily the highlight of the meal--perfectly seasoned cornmeal crust, super flaky, and not greasy at all. For sides, do not skip the Candied Yams or the Fried Cabbage; they taste exactly like something out of a family kitchen. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere is very laid back and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even when they're busy, the staff makes you feel like a regular. The portions are huge (I definitely had leftovers for lunch the next day), so you really get your money's worth. It's a local gem that actually lives up to its name. Five stars for the food and the hospitality!

    Chicken and waffles. Good.

The name changes but the hospitality and food stays solid. I have not been here since the new owners took over. Formerly J's Place you can still count on great hospitality very good food when you come here. Some of the foods I sampled were the chicken and waffles, catfish and the fresh homemade biscuits. The biscuits were flaky and so perfect. The catfish was breaded perfectly, flaky and had a great flavor to it. The chicken and waffles were good, but not quite what I would like. The waffle on its own was a waffle, better than average. The chicken was a generous piece of breast pounded flat, coated, and fried. However, I really would prefer a little more southern fried to my chicken. I want that crunch to be the yin to the yang of the waffle. In other words, I want some crunch in my chicken to go with the softness of the waffle. The flavor of the chicken was good. It had a hint of cayenne pepper and was tender. I can't wait to come back and try a full order of the catfish and the omelettes looked amazing from the people around me. I would like to try those next time too. Service A+ Food B+ Price B+ [[HIGHLIGHT]]Cleanliness A+[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great job Mom's House.

Today we had a work lunch and there were 17 of us! Not only was service great but they got all of our orders right. From the moment we arrived, Jaden, our server was extremely friendly and attentive. She was on it! Another woman, possibly a manager, also brought out some delicious cornbread for our large group. Our entire team was very happy and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the fried cat fish; it was my second time having it as it's so darn good! Most of us even took home food because the portions are very generous. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Mom's House has a small room off to the side, so it provided us with privacy which was much appreciated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Will definitely be back again.

We hadn't been here in a long time and we're really craving it so we decided to eat here. The service was amazing and our waitress was really friendly. Our food was so good that my son eating catfish for the 1st time wanted to order another order. I loved my chicken sandwich and man was it spicy but oh so good. The fries were cooked really crispy which I liked. It wasn't really loud in the restaurant which I liked but there was someone trying to sing at the top of her lungs but she quickly stopped. We are definitely coming back to try more food.

Wow! What an amazing fried catfish dinner! Bonus- I order from the senior menu which sweetened the deal. My side of corn was delicious and sweet and flavorful. Cornbread was ok. Service- Jade was awesome! Friendly and patient. It did take a bit to be seated, even though there were empty tables. Ambiance- simple and clean. Noise level not too bad. Two birthdays took place and the staff comes over and sings and encourages others to join in the singing. Great place for a group birthday celebration!

Great place when you need some comfort food. We have followed them from Ming Ave to this larger location. The catfish is our favorite, but everything is very good. Their fried chicken is also outstanding. Clean comfortable dining area and friendly welcoming staff. Nice to have them as a neighborhood stop.

Within 15 minutes, the entire restaurant was filled. I ordered the pozole and chile verde pork burrito to go. It took about 20 minutes, which is understandable with a full restaurant. The pozole is simple and delicious: chunks of chicken breast and hominy in a rich broth. I added the diced white onions, cilantro, squeeze of lime and tortilla chips. Delicious, fresh, simple and clean. Love, love, love this pozole. $15.00 The chile verde pork burrito, which I ordered without any additional ingredients, is also delicious. It took a while to be approached by the staff and then luckily seated quickly because a table was miraculously open. But after that we rarely saw our waitress. Long waits in between ordering, receiving food, receiving check etc It was decorated lightly for Harry Potter over its regular decor which was confusing, but the waitress said the owner loved Harry Potter and it was his birthday. Can't argue with that, pop off dude. The food itself was good. I had a latte and a breakfast burrito with chile verde and fruit pancakes. The chile verde was the best part of the meal. Everything else was pretty average and typical for breakfast food. I did like their extensive menu and Mexican American flavors, it was a fun touch. I'm not sure I'll be back on a weekend, not worth the hassle. Would try on a weekday

Most of the staff are great, however, everytime i come with my partner, we cant help but notice that the older waitress Mary gives us a strange type of vibe/treatment everytime we have her as our waitress. She rarely will acknowledge us, one time she walked up to our table and didn't greet us or ask for anything and when we finally said hello first, she didnt greet us back but instead just took our drink order. She also regularly brings us our check before we even finish our first plate, and doesnt do this with other patrons or people sitting. We recently came close to lunch time and quickly handed us our check which we figured that they might charge the difference or recharge us for lunch. However we were the only people in the dining room that she did not offer this upcharge or if we were staying for lunch. Just handed us our check and walked away.
