And I'm glad she did it is traditionally Southern sweetened tea which would have gave me a problem drinking that. My friend opted for the Swwweeeeeet tea and I opted regular tea with lemon. The GRUB : They have a good southern menu and they have very attentive staff today we got the" Surf and Cluckers" Meal w/catfish, chicken thigh, chicken breast, 5 shrimp, sweet potatoes, Mac and cheese and black eyed peas and Cornbread... and I loved every bit of it the catfish 5/5 stars was tasty well cooked and seasoned just right the chicken breast was filleted (too thin for my liking) 4/5 stars, cooked in a very good batter along with the chicken thigh 5/5 stars the five shrimp 5/5 stars were not jumbo shrimp but we're good enough to satisfy and tasted the same way the catfish tasted in the cornmeal batter, the sweet potatoes were very good and I was surprised at how well they tasted the 5/5 stars Black Eyed Peas where soft and well seasoned 5/5 stars, cornbread was good but colder than I would have liked as it didn't melt the butter 3/5 stars while the macaroni and cheese was nothing to rave about 2/5 stars., honestly for the price it was about as much food as I would have eaten if I went to Hodels for about the same total price for 2 people, however if I had this meal anywhere else outside of Bakersfield it would have cost me approximately twice as much..Great deal for the price. You know, I have been here several times and I'm never really impressed. Their chicken and waffles don't have nothing on others, including Roscoe's. Their oxtails however are amazing but they're so expensive I never order them. Most of their sides have pork in them, so I never order any. I was told by a friend that they were now offering breakfast or brunch so we decided to give them another try. Imagine my surprise when I got there and nope...no breakfast or brunch menu. I was really craving eggs but there was none on the menu. Instead of leaving I decided to go with the red snapper and fries since I am not a fan of catfish. Unfortunately I believe they served me catfish anyway and instead of saying anything I just ate it. The fries looked spectacular but lacked flavor. They just tasted like cooked potatoes. I also got the fried green beans which were just ok. My daughter got the chicken sandwich and ate one bite. I don't think anything was wrong with the sandwich she wasn't impressed by their menu at all and wanted to leave from the beginning but I made her order something so that's my fault. I don't think I'll be coming back to give them yet another chance to impress me. Too bad we still don't have a good soul food place in town except a food truck. We've visited Moms House for many years- it was one of my moms favorite places to eat, where she could get "home" style cooking- she missed her North Carolina food. Today, we decided to stay in and take a day to relax and ordered breakfast through Instacart- I was glad to see Moms House as an option. They had several buy one get one deals- totally affordable, prices not jacked to double or triple in store prices. At first sight, I thought the French toast might be disappointing- it was not. It is not the thick Texas toast- the custard was soaked through it and wasn't bready- really nice cinnamon flavor. Good job. Loaded biscuits and gravy- the biscuit- you should really sell biscuits by the dozen. Potatoes- so flavorful and cooked well. Egg- scrambled- fine. Gravy- really nice sausage gravy. Mom's house was great! Headed there on a Friday night to meet up with our book club, we were able to sit together in the back and let me tell you the place was full! There were lots of people also picking up. The menu is true southern cooking with amazing flavors. I got the fried catfish, mac and cheese and sweet potato's. Well I haven't been to Mom's house in a while I mean it's been years I remember when this spot used to be on the Ming avenue and Stine but it's been a long time since I've been in this spot on Rosedale it's changed a lot in the last few years it's not as Urban when I walked in you can tell this difference in the atmosphere I mean you still got the same pictures and all that good stuff it's just atmosphere a little different you walk in there you can tell by the music to explain it but that's okay no big deal it's just different the customer service is on point like always and I can't say the food is still on point catfish is good macaroni and cheese is on point and I'm collard greens they're almost as good as mamas but hey close enough had to pork chops smothered and gravy they were definitely on point so if you want those hey go grab those up but overall it was actually okay I mean there's not too many soul food restaurants in town so I commend them for staying open so if you can get food at your own Mama's house I guess it's the best spot to get it if you can't make it yourself prices are a little high though I can't say that 19 bucks for smothered pork chops at two sides that is kind of high but hey it's all good definitely going to go back again and it won't take me two or three years ago back read more

Formerly J's Place you can still count on great hospitality very good food when you come here. Some of the foods I sampled were the chicken and waffles, catfish and the fresh homemade biscuits. The biscuits were flaky and so perfect. The catfish was breaded perfectly, flaky and had a great flavor to it. The chicken and waffles were good, but not quite what I would like. The waffle on its own was a waffle, better than average. The chicken was a generous piece of breast pounded flat, coated, and fried. However, I really would prefer a little more southern fried to my chicken. I want that crunch to be the yin to the yang of the waffle. In other words, I want some crunch in my chicken to go with the softness of the waffle. The flavor of the chicken was good. It had a hint of cayenne pepper and was tender. I can't wait to come back and try a full order of the catfish and the omelettes looked amazing from the people around me. I would like to try those next time too. Today we had a work lunch and there were 17 of us! Not only was service great but they got all of our orders right. From the moment we arrived, Jaden, our server was extremely friendly and attentive. She was on it! Another woman, possibly a manager, also brought out some delicious cornbread for our large group. Our entire team was very happy and everyone enjoyed their meals. Wow! What an amazing fried catfish dinner! Bonus- I order from the senior menu which sweetened the deal. My side of corn was delicious and sweet and flavorful. Cornbread was ok. The fried chicken has thick crispy with juicy chicken that are some of the largest pieces I have ever seen. It looks more like a turkey lake. The corn is seasoned so well and the mashed potatoes have a ton of flavor. When ordering cater, they will do individual plates or set it up like a buffing style. She showed us to a booth and asked if we wanted our usual; we've been a few times now and always order the same thing for breakfast. I have been on the look out for good lunch special. Mom's house popped up and we had to check it out. The ambiance is simple dinning. We waited by the register for about 5-8 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. A young man asked what he could do for us. I said we would like to dine in. He put together some forks and napkins with menus and walked away. I assumed we were to follow and I was right he layer the items down on a table and walked away. The restaurant was not very busy and the music was not loud. After a few minutes a young lady came up and asked us what we would like to drink. We all put our order for drinks in and let her know we were ready to order food as well. The food was good, between the two different children sandwiches and the chili cheese fries to the children's catfish it was good. The catfish was my favorite, the flavor and texture was perfect. The service was ok nothing outstanding about it. We all kind of got the feeling the servers were in a bad mood. We we would ask for things the girl would not make eye contact or even stop for more then 30 seconds before walking away. Over all I would order pick up just for the catfish.
