I really like Spice I Am, we have been going there for a number of years. It has all the features of an upscale restaurant - great food and nice, modern atmosphere - minus the high prices. I've never had a bad dish here. The pad Thai is always a great bet. The other day we ordered ramen with duck and it was delicious. Portions are generous, every dish I've had is enough for two people to share. I do wish they had a full bar, or even soju-based cocktails, which would pair nicely with the food, but as it is, the wine selection is more than adequate. They're also open throughout the day, they don't close mid-afternoon, which is nice. read more

I usually go here for Thai food. I've been dieting and eating home-cooked meals, but decided to treat myself today. I ordered my usual pad see ew and fried chicken over fried rice. Upon opening the box and looking at the pad see ew I could tell there wasn't enough sauce. The noodles were still somewhat white. The fried chicken over fried rice was just ok, slightly over fried chicken and bland rice. Ugh, with being good this whole time I had hoped for a delicious meal. So disappointed. For reference, I came in a little after 4 pm, so before the dinner rush. Plus the restaurant only had one other table with two people sitting there, so you can't say they were too busy to cook the food properly. read more

My friend took me here for my birthday for lunch and I was way too excited to try it out! It looked fancier than I thought it would be inside. Decor was simple and classy, and the lighting was on the darker side. S E R V I C E: We were seated right away and were given water. Our waitress was very attentive and we received our food in a timely manner. F O O D: We ordered their stuffed chicken for appetizer, green chicken curry, and pineapple curry fried rice and as far as drinks, a Thai tea and a young coconut drink. The presentation of all the food was beautiful. The fried rice was in a cut-out pineapple and the flavor was great, with cashews, chicken, and chunks of pineapple. The green curry had a great flavor and before the extra chili spices I added. The stuffed chicken was different for me - it was stuffed with vermicelli, but it still tasted yummy! It's never the same when it comes to take out. Please keep in mind that I am reviewing during COVID times. I did take out with a friend. I ordered the seafood pad see-ew and we ordered the angel wings to share. Let's start with the pad see-ew. The scallop was overcook causing it to be a lit tough. The noodles were not fully separated and for a pad see-ew, it did nothing have enough sweet soy in it so there weren't much color to it. Since the noodles were not separated and evenly distribute, you're basically eating a big chunk of noodle with a little soy on top. The angel wings were horrible. Way too much glass noodles and pepper, at least the wing that I had. The noodle and meat were not evenly distribute because most of the meat were in the wing that my friend had. For me, I did not have a good experience, however, my friend enjoyed his dish (can't remember what he order). read more

Spice I Am, more than 3 stars you are not. I came here with my wife's sis-in-law, nephew, and niece for Sunday dinner. About a 30-minute wait since this Thai restaurant seems extremely popular for both dine-in and take out. Some of the dishes were actually decent, and the flavors were there. However, they did manage to overcook the meats on several dishes while undercooking and under-seasoning the veggies. Food also took more than 30-minutes to arrive after ordering. Appetizers were good - crispy wings (fried, sauce-glazed, topped with basil) and chicken satay (with a real thick peanut sauce) were served piping hot. Pumpkin Red Curry with Chicken - one of their signature dishes but the chicken was dry from overcooking, Pumpkin pieces were not soft and tender and needed more time. Curry broth was fine. Short Ribs were well-done and had some burnt ends, which was a total miss. Good flavors, though texture-wise closer to beef jerky. Lots of sides of steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. However, not an iota of salt or any other seasoning just so plain bland! Spicy Eggplant with Tofu was a decent dish - only wished they had more of the eggplant! Drunken Beef Noodles were one of two good dishes - got amount of heat and flavor burst. Sea Bass with Garlic Sauce was our favorite entree - fish was moist and so good. Came here during lunch, had the drunken noodles , it was really really good. I asked her to make it spicy but she said I can just add the spice myself which was on the table. I put a couple of spoonful and dang, it had me coughing but it was hecka tasty. The restaurant looks like a nice place to go on a date. There's meter parking all around but it's slightly hard to get since it's such a busy area. Definitely coming back for more though. The thai tea was good too. read more

Spice I Am is my go-to-Thai food restaurant in Alameda. Their food is consistently good and service is always up-to-par. The interior decor is elegant. I love the huge canvases on the wall! I almost always order 2 things: Yellow Curry and Pad Thai. I have to say, I've had both pre- and current-vegan (pre-vegan days with chicken, current vegan day with tofu) and both are equally delicious! They offer white, brown, and coconut rice - if you decide to pair your dish with rice, I recommend the coconut rice - yum! They have a good selection of wine. Any of the white wines pairs well with Yellow Curry. Dessert - ok, if you try ANY dessert there, you HAVE to try the mango sticky rice. This review is for my takeout experience during the Stay At Home restrictions. I've dined here in the past and my experiences were always positive. I called in my order at about 5:00pm on a Friday. I ordered three items: Pad See I (beef), Green Curry with chicken and Angel Wings. I also got a side order of coconut rice. I confirmed the total cost and was informed to come at 5:30pm to pickup my order. I arrived at the restaurant at 5:30 and there were already 4 customers waiting ahead of me. However I saw that my order was ready on top of the counter. I was on my way in just under 10 minutes time. Upon feasting on the three items I found everything to be good. However I felt the Pad See could of had a little more flavor. Usually in the past when I've order it in the restaurant it's very flavorful. All in all no issues with the entire process from ordering to eating. I'll give 4 stars for an overall rating during these challenging times for local restaurants. read more

If you are looking for a nice place to have a drink and quick Thai food look no further. This place smelled FANTASTIC and it was good. It's around the corner from the theater so we parked in the structure and walked over. Parking can be a challenge around here so be sure to plan ahead in case you are in a rush to make a movie or meet someone. Our food was ok. Not the best Thai I have had but it placated my hunger. This place was ok! We ordered the Fresh Shrimp Roll, Drunken noodles (one with calamari and one with shrimp, medium spice), Garlic Rice, and Duck Curry. The Fresh Shrimp Rolls didn't have very much shrimp....they weren't bad they just definitely lacked shrimp for being called fresh shrimp roles. Drunken Noodles were also just ok. I've had better and for some reason they lacked flavor to us. They were still good just not the best I've had. The Garlic Rice and Duck Curry were definitely the stars of our order. Came here for a quick pre-airport meal and it did not disappoint. It is open during the lunch to dinner period unlike the other Thai places so it was perfect for our group. VEGAN REVIEW: When I was reading the reviews, I thought there were more vegan options than I was presented with. I asked my waiter which noodle dishes could be made vegan and he said the Drunken Noodles was the only noodle dish that didn't use fish sauce. Luckily, I'm not too picky (aside from the whole veganism thing), so I just went with that. The noodles themselves were great - very flavorful and soft; however, the veggies were on the opposite end of the spectrum. They lacked flavor and were quite disappointing. I ended up dipping them in the AMAZING peanut sauce that came with our tofu fries. Another con was that I didn't like the low lighting of the restaurant. It was a tad too dark for me - I felt like I could have fallen asleep. Overall, I would come again to get the peanut sauce and try other (possibly veganizable) menu items. read more

Flavorful food that we easily shared. Chicken satay, and spring roll appetizers were great. The green papaya salad was delightful. We also had 2 excellent entrees, vegetables and roasted duck; all shared among 4 adults. Service was impeccable and ambience was sophisticated bistro. This place has really gone downhill. This was my favorite thai place with the food and environment (romantic). I used to really love the food here, and the last time I came here, service was lacking. I came here for lunch on a Wednesday. It was decently full. Our waitress looked really done with life and had a RBF. Thats fine, I thought. I was just excited to have Spice I Am, because I haven't had it in over a year. I ordered Chicken Pad Thai($10) and a Thai Iced Tea ($2.50). Water came, and it had no ice, like a reviewer said before. They could definitely put ice in the water. It would be a huge plus. The Chicken Pad Thai was okay. The meat was kind of stiff, not soft at all. Too overdone I think. That just killed it for me. The Thai Iced Tea was alright as well. Too much creamer in my opinion. After three hours of James Bond I headed around the corner to Spice I Am for a late lunch. Great decision because everything was very good. We had the chicken wing appetizer. Thai basil (ground chicken with fresh string beans), one of my favorites, as a couple of other items. This is truly one of my go to restaurants. So happy to be out and about again. Food: Pineapple fried rice with prawns and chicken was okay, it tasted a bit bland and could use some more flavor. The pad thai was delicious. I loved the roti the most, the bread was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and tasted amazing with the sauce. Ambiance: On the outside, you would barely notice the restaurant, but when I walked in I was surprised by how classy the place looked. It was empty besides for another table when my friends and I came in at 7pm on a Tuesday night. My go-to spot for Thai food when I'm in Alameda. Might be kinda hard to spot but it's in between Tucker's Ice Cream and a video store. You can try to find parking on the street or go into the parking lot by the movie theater/CVS. On this visit, I got a Pad Thai with prawns while the bf got Fried Rice with Chicken. We also shared an order of Roti (Indian-style bread with Thai yellow curry). The pad thai was pretty good; tasted sweet & savory. I usually order it with chicken but decided to try it with prawns (think there were 4 or 5). Enjoyed the bread & curry too. Fried Rice was a little bland. The bill came out to about $32. I also like their Spicy Green Beans w Chicken, Thai Tea, Crispy Wings and Chicken Pad See Ew. They have 1 unisex restroom which is all the way in the back and you can see part of the vintage clothing/bookstore that's next door. Good service & food! read more

Okay I only had the drunken noodles but they were GOOD. The veggies were fresh and appropriately tender-crisp, good flavor in the sauce but not overbearing, and the tofu was tender-crisp as well -- as only Thai cooks can do. I ordered it spicy, and I was close to checking off the "Thai spicy" choice and I'm glad that I didn't because they meant it! It was sooooo spicy and I don't shy away from spicy at all enjoying habanero sauce and Korean packaged ramen noodle soup. It was the spiciest drunken noodles I've ever had and the spiciest dish overall that I've eaten since having my son (pregnancy permanently changed my sensitivity to foods that potentiallycan give me heartburn - acidic/spicy). I will definitely order from Spice I Am when cravings for Thai food hit me again, which they often do. read more

The waitstaff here were incredibly friendly and nice. The decor is also quite nice, fancy on the inside and perfect for a date night. The food however is only ok. We got the wings appetizer, the pad thai (mix of beef and tofu, glad that they were able to be flexible about that) and the pineapple fried rice. The wings were nothing overly special, just deep fried small wings with some crispy basil. Flavor was ok. The pad thai was good, but a little too sweet. Again, kudos for their flexibility on allowing 2 proteins on the same plate (options I think were chicken, beef, pork, tofu or shrimp... they allowed beef and tofu). The pineapple fried rice was not great. The rice was overcooked and soggy which really took away from the entire dish. We don't live in Alameda, but I would much rather try another place than come back here. Spice I Am is a cute Thai restaurant in Alameda with modern decor and friendly staff. Nice place for a date night. It's nestled between two other business (I think a nail salon and a clothing store) so it can be easy to miss if you're not looking carefully. My friend and I ordered Pad Thai and drunken noodles. The Pad Thai was tasty but the drunken noodles didn't have any flavor - all you could taste was the spice. It's also a bit more expensive than other Thai places that I've been to but, given the location, it's understandable. Parking is a pain. Good luck trying to find street parking around dinner time. This area is always really busy. There's a small metered lot down the street but you will probably have better luck in the parking structure nearby. read more

I pass by Spice I Am when I'm on Park St. and kept telling myself I need to try this place. I had a visiting friend and we decided to go with Thai so to Spice I Am we went. We were seated promptly and a waitress asked if we wanted to start off with water. I answered positively and we had water within 5 minutes. My friend and I ordered the roti with yellow curry as an appetizer. She ordered the Phat Thai (Pad Thai elsewhere) with chicken and I ordered the Drunken Noodle (Pad Kee Mau elsewhere). We also asked for two Thai iced teas. The Thai iced tea came in a tall skinny glass that was visually appealing and a small stir-type straw. The roti with yellow curry arrived. The yellow curry was excellent. I wish there had been a few more slices of roti to eat all of the yellow curry. Regardless, the dish was excellent and I would order it again. I had a bite of my friend's phat thai which just the right amount of sweet but like my drunken noodles, there wasn't anything that wowed me like the yellow curry. The drunken noodles had that creeping spiciness but didn't have much noodles. There was quite a bit of cabbage in the dish that looked like noodles. I would give Spice I Am a 3.5 but I'd come back to try a curry since they seemed to excel in that this time. read more

Came in here with the family for a family dinner... bro made reservations but we think the hostess forgot to write it down... so we ended up waiting since it was a Saturday night... I've been meaning to check this place out and apparently my bro had been here numerous times before this dinner and he said it was good. My family and I shared the following: - Angel Wings (Deep-fried chicken wings stuffed with minced chicken, silver noodles, mixed vegetables) = this was really good (besides the fact that it was deep-fried goodness... it was well seasoned and crunchy all at the right places! - Roti (An Indian-style bread served with Thai yellow curry sauce) = I guess I'm so used to the one I normally get from Penang Garden... this definitely wasn't it. It was more a cake-like, cut into tiny pizza-like pieces and the center was the curry sauce. I had one and wasn't a fan... if you're used to the ones where it's freshly baked and looked and as thin as a crepe... this is definitely nothing like that. - Pineapple fried rice = yes, I had to do the inevitable and that is to order the typical dish... I was craving rice! This was actually fantastic! Loads of pineapple chunks and I was definitely a fan of this... The rest of the familia ordered more dishes but I didn't remember most of them because I didn't taste any... I was solely focused in devouring my fried rice... yep... I was craving it that much! This review is long overdue, but better late than never. There's a been a lot of hype about Spice Am I, and yes, I admit, I'm a huge fan of the food and less of the staff and service. Located between Central and Alameda Avenues off Park Street, in downtown Alameda, it is truly pleasant surprise. Spice I Am is a fairly small restaurant, so when it gets busy, the wait time for a table can range anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. But the food is so delicious; it's literally worth the wait. The layout is --- simple, cozy, and very inviting. As for the staff and service -- the staff is fairly kind but has occasionally gave me incorrect when trying to schedule a reservation for a large party in the past. It did affect me in the past because I had to change my dinner reservations for a party of 16-18 people because Spice I Am gave me incorrect dining information and informed me very last minute that they couldn't accommodate my large group because it was during a busy hour, even with the reservations I made weeks in advance. It was disappointing and so last minute. Therefore, I will not be scheduling any large group dinners or Birthday dinners at Spice I Am. As for the service, it varies and can be somewhat slow. Nonetheless, during the many times I've dined here, I've added several favorites to my list -- my favorite dishes are the Tofu Fries, Angel Wings (best wings ever), Pad See I, and the Pad Thai. I highly recommend trying those dishes but I will definitely try a new dish next time. Looking forward to dining at Spice I Am again, in the near future ... but with a minimal group. read more

We've been coming here for years because it has a great location on Park St. It used to be good but now consistently for two years has had decreased in quality. In particular for to go foods it seems that the food has been tasted dry and reheated, especially the proteins but also sometimes the noodles. We end up picking out/throwing out the chicken or just omitting proteins altogether from our orders. We hope that they can return to making fresher food but maybe this is the reality of their keeping up with to go orders. read more
