We've been coming here for years because it has a great location on Park St. It used to be good but now consistently for two years has had decreased in quality. In particular for to go foods it seems that the food has been tasted dry and reheated, especially the proteins but also sometimes the noodles. We end up picking out/throwing out the chicken or just omitting proteins altogether from our orders. We hope that they can return to making fresher food but maybe this is the reality of their keeping up with to go orders. read more

My boyfriend and I have this odd mission to try every restaurant on this street, and this was our next stop... The atmosphere is more intimate and upscale than casual, though the workers and customers made it seem more casual. The menu items were a mix of traditional and fusion. We tried several different dishes, which weren't the best I've ever had, but were still great! My favorite was the special fried mushroom appetizer (which was large enough to be a full entree). The dishes are normal portion sizes, which I enjoy, even if they're small for family style compared to other restaurants of its genre. Their prices are a little higher than average as well, if you're looking to feed a family. My only complaint is that you have to pay separately for rice with most entrees and for the amount you get, it should be free of charge (with extra servings being charged for), which is what most places do. But it's a minor complaint, as the cost is small. But I would definitely come back here again! The customer service was mediocre, mostly because their staff was very small, so sometimes our server would disappear for long periods of time and it took three times of shouting to flag them down (the ceiling is high and sound carries, making it difficult to distinguish voices). AMAZING!!! I love Thai food but have never tried this spot so I was excited to try it but wow, it's really good! Ordered the beef pad see ew, bbq short ribs with coconut rice, and the egg rolls! The pad see ew was the best pad see ew I've had! Sadly the portion was small but it was reasonably priced. The bbq short ribs come with a huge portion and the rice was perfect, not too sweet but still tasty. The egg rolls (spring rolls) were crispy and vegetarian if I'm not mistaken. I'm big on Thai Food as I've worked in a Thai restaurant before and this place to me is just mediocre. I came around 3 (they're open all day) and it was pretty empty, the decor and design was nice. Tried to order the fried tofu without peanut sauce and with curry sauce instead but they said they couldn't do it? It was no big deal to me but just made me wonder, why not because I wasn't in the mood for peanuts. The lunch special with eggplant and chicken served with my choice of sticky rice was okay. Street parking is hard to find on the weekend at night time. It's free street parking after 6P.M I believe SERVICE: it was alright. They seem nice but a tad slow. Only 1-2 servers that night for the whole restaurant so just need to be patient! FOOD: Beef Salad ($9): My number one dish to order when I go to Thai places. This place used to be good when they opened around 2012. It was actually my favorite Thai restaurant up until a couple years ago. I actually stopped visiting this joint because the pad see ew no longer tasted flavorful. They also give you more food now than when they first opened. I made a recent trip last week for my best friends birthday. We didn't have to wait because the restaurant was pretty deserted. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and didn't have any complaints. I was probably the only one who was a little disappointed with the bland rice noodles. Besides the food, I like the ambiance of this place. In addition, the servers are always sweet and attentive. Came here for dinner on a Sunday night with some friends before our movie started. The restaurant is a more modern and on the fancier side for Thai places. Their menu offered great selections, but some of the dishes were named differently. The service was alright, nothing spectacular. I'll give them points for being quick and prompt. The food was mediocre as well, but still good. It tasted more modernized than traditional. There are definitely more traditional thai places around Oakland that is cheaper and tastes better. This place definitely deserves 5 Stars!! I am indeed a fan here. Haven't been craving the Pad Thai Noodles for a long while now but this was the night to reignite the yearning. And this location is quite a welcoming delight, cool and with a pleasant atmosphere. The service is efficient and super friendly. We ordered the Phat Thai Noodle with Chicken. I loved every tasty flavor of it. We also had the Pumpkin Curry. That, my friends, is an absolutely delicious dish! So mouth-watering, you have to try it! We had the fried crab rice, salmon with avocado, an order of prawn rolls, two fried eggs on the side and a side peanut sauce. Woah!!! It's heavenly!! A great place for reasonably priced Thai food with solid service and nicely plated and well prepared dishes Spice I Am could be considered a hidden gem on Alameda's very busy Park Street. Spice I Am has a sleek and modern interior accompanied by both traditional and updated classic Thai dishes. I came with a party of three on a busy Friday evening at about 7pm and we were sat immediately and with all of the bustle going on outside on Park Street with the numerous restaurants outside it was a nice respite. One of my dining companions had been before and had two items on the appetizer menu that he just loved the Pot Stickers and Spring Rolls. I thought both were solid choices as the pot stickers were a little greasy for my taste but thankfully highlighted by the delicious peanut sauce, and the spring rolls were crunchy accentuated by the sweet chili sauce. For our main entrees, I was in the mood for traditional Thai Curry and went with Thai Red Curry with the option of beef, with bamboo shoots, pineapple, baby corn, bell peppers and basil. The dish was spicier than I thought it would be and at 10 dollars it was at a very reasonable price but didn't come with any rice so you have to order it on the side (I mean who orders curry without any rice?) So I went with the sticky rice at $1.50 which was decent but was too sticky (more sticky than I'm used to with Thai cuisine) for me to even separate into any pieces. My dining mates went with the Fresh Ginger with the option of chicken along with ginger, mushroom, baby corn, onions and bell pepper which was a nice stir fried combination. Another went with an item off of the Grilled Lamb Chop with Thai Yellow Curry which at 18 dollars did come with a complimentary rice option. Go figure. It was really a rack of lamb not what you'd consider a lamb chop and I found it wee bit overcooked but I liked the flavor profile of the dish. I had a really nice time at Spice I Am, the presentation of their dishes was really top notch, elegant and refined without being over the top which was well represented by the chic Thai Iced Teas they serve. The ambiance was really key and Spice I Am really fit into the restaurant profile of the other storefronts in the area, perhaps even more so that I originally expected, sleek and sexy in the middle of Alameda I was certainly not expecting. This place is a gem - great food, excellent service and elegant decor. We happened to be in Alameda downtown for the vintage car show this weekend and were looking for a nice play to have lunch. There are quite a few Thai restaurants in the downtown though we loved the decor of this place and decided to have lunch here. The service is excellent and the waitress are very polite. They have good wine collection and we decided to skip that for lunch We ordered the Panang curry, drunken noodles with tofu and ginger tofu (comes with vegetables) with jasmine rice. The portion sizes were generous and dishes were freshly prepared and tasty. The food didn't smell of fish sauce - like it does in other Thai restaurants and was served within few mins of us, placing the order. The place is neat and clean, the restaurant doesn't smell when you walk in and they have unisex bathroom- it is pretty spacious and clean- though their can be a bit of a wait. But, in all fairness, our frame of reference is probably different than most Americans because we've been to Thailand several times. I don't claim to be an expert, but it seems to me that too many Thai restaurants in the U.S. tend to "Americanize" their Thai dishes resulting in less nuanced flavorings and less Thai authenticity. Spice I Am (not to be confused with Will.I.Am) is tucked in between Tucker's ice cream and a local video store. Modern, no frills decor with cool large minimalist pieces on the walls. Lunch service was swift and efficient, with affordable specials. I went for their marinated short ribs, which included a mound of brown rice, steamed vegetables (cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli), and a delicious salad with ginger dressing to start off, all for 9 bucks! When I asked for it to be spicy, my server instead offered to bring the spice mini-cart. While the spice mini-cart trifecta indeed packed some heat (crushed red pepper, chili sauce, pickled jalapenos), I have to say that pickled jalapeños are no substitute for pickled thai chilies. Or fresh thai chilies. Or even fresh jalapeños for that matter. The short ribs were deliciously spiced and grilled. A good amount of fat off the bone, but that's what one would expect from short ribs. As I was making my way through the plate (good portion), I found that the rice wasn't really adding to the meal. Upon paying and leaving, I asked the server about the option of ordering my lunch special without any rice, and what impact it would have in terms of portion. She responded that they would be happy to offer more steamed vegetables, which would actually be pretty cool. This is the best Thai food I had in Alameda. That technically doesn't say much because Alameda isn't exactly stacked with Thai restaurants, but you get my drift. Maybe you aren't spicy, but YUMMY you most definitely are! On a random Saturday morning, my hubby decided to just drive without any clear idea of where to go. We then found ourselves in downtown Alameda, surrounded by a plethora of lunch spots to choose from. Spice I Am caught my eye and I eagerly dragged my hubby inside. At first glance, I thought I had walked into the wrong restaurant because the modern-style decor was absolutely stunning with abstract paintings upon the walls, a large bookshelf of wines, a bar, and sleek black tables and booths. Spice I Am is certainly unlike any other Thai restaurants we have been to. Just from appearance, I suspected the prices to be exorbitant, but when my hubby and I opened the thick, booklet-like menu, we were surprised to find more than reasonable prices. PERFECT! Absolutely eager to eat, my hubby chose the pineapple fried rice and I got the Khao Sawy, a noodle soup with egg noodles, chicken, and tofu in a flavorful curry sauce with crispy wonton strips as a garnish. When both dishes arrived, we were immensely pleased with the presentation. The pineapple fried rice was served in a fresh, juicy pineapple with a flat edge spoon that allowed us to scrape some juices from the fruit when we put the rice onto our plates. There were only three pieces of shrimp on top, but there was an abundance of chicken throughout. The Khao Sawy was topped with a cluster of wonton strips on a sea of vibrant red curry that smelled absolutely divine. My mouth was already watering when I took a bite of the egg noodles from the Khao Sawy which were wonderfully soft and yet not the least bit mushy. The curry was creamy and smooth, but never did it feel heavy. My hubby even drank it like soup when he normally just leaves the curry behind. Phenomenal! As for the fried rice, he and I both loved the addition of sweet raisins that balanced the tartness of the pineapple. The cashews provided unbelievable texture to the soft rice and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the chicken in both plates veered towards the dry side, but that was easily overlooked in comparison to everything else. My hubby and I practically cleaned up both plates, and when the bill arrived, we couldn't believe how cheap it was! Service was attentive and polite, but considering how there were only two waiters, we have a feeling that service could definitely be slow if the restaurant was any busier. I'm so happy that Toomies decided that they had enough customers and didn't want to serve us because we would not have ended up here otherwise! To compare: Toomies is like a Spanish Galleon, older, dimmer (for mood I guess), whereas Spice I Am is like the Starship Enterprise. It's cleaner, more modern, and best of all, friendlier!! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and quickly shown our seats (the last two in the house). Glad we didn't have to wait! The Tom Kha (coconut soup) and the Pad Thai are both really, really good. The Red Pumpkin Curry was also good, but Pumpkin just doesn't hit the sweet spot for me. I will definitely try the Pineapple Fried Rice next time! The food is definitely 5 star material, complex yet simple at the same time. The chili flakes in the Tom Kha add a subtle kick without being overpowering. Although there is definitely lemongrass in the soup, I only managed to find one small piece. Most Thai places I know just serve it as filler so they don't need to waste any more "actual" ingredients like mushrooms or chicken to make the soup look better. The Pad Thai was warm, with the bean sprouts slowly cooking on the warm bed of noodles. The peanuts are crushed and to the side so you can add as much or as little to your serving as you'd like. The Pad Thai sat at our table for at least 30 minutes before we scrumptiously finished the last few noodles and tofu. The noodles (not once) stick or clump together: a sign they used fresh noodles and not old noodles. The curry was also very good (we got it with chicken) and it comes in a very generous helping of white rice. **tip if you go for a curry to share, you may find yourself having enough rice without having to get a second bowl!** The best part to come! We were seated at a small table (for 2) but when the gentleman next to us finished and left, the waitress came over to clean off his table and pushed it against ours. She smiled and said "your pad thai is on the way, just want to make sure you have enough room to eat!" Most places I know would save that second table, hoping beyond hope that they can seat another guest there. This lady, without hesitation, simply acted and we were very, very appreciative. Stopped by here for a late lunch. I liked the decor of the place and it seemed quite clean. I ordered a thai iced tea and was overwhelmed by the sweetness of the tea. Since I saw so many picture of the tofu fries, I had to try it. The tofu was crispy and good which came with a peanut sauce that was okay. I felt myself getting sick of the sauce after a while. For an entree I had the one that is like a Pad See Ew. I was punched in the mouth with so much white pepper after taking a bite! Not only was it throughout the dish, it was sprinkled on top as well. Goodness, it was quite peppery and it was all I could really taste. I was so disappointed because the noodles seemed too chewy as well but we were in a hurry for the boyfriend to get back to work for me to say anything about it. This Thai restaurant has modern minimalistic interior so I was not sure what to expect in terms of authenticity of food. To my delight, all of the things my party ordered were very good. I highly recommend the classic lemongrass chicken soup. It's not overly sweet and heavy here and has a good amount of sourness and spice. I also loved the texture of the thin slithers of corn as I haven't seen those added before. I have to commend the service as great. Our waitress was polite and attentive without being overbearing. The amount was just right. The Laap wasn't the amount I was expecting though. I wanted more like the amount I've had in other restaurant but they served only 1/4 of what I was use to. The utensils were silverware and that was very important to me. My dining experience can go downhill once I'm given a flimsy plastic fork! For dessert we had our staple sticky rice and mango!!! omg it was divine!!! I was raving about it all day!!! The plating was so pretty. The amount was not overwhelming. This is my absolute favorite Thai food restaurant in the Bay Area! My first time going was on a date.My second time going was with my best friend. The decor is really beautiful and well designed to help build a nice mood for individuals on a date but, also still family friendly for those arriving with children etc. Food is served in sharing portions which, I always love because it allows for you to try a plethora of items on the menu. My date at the time was a pescetarian so he ordered a lot of items that had seafood in them. I am not the the biggest seafood lover but, I indulged and surprisingly enjoyed. The crab fried rice is made with real crab and the crab is not stingy at all with his portions. The pot stickers are fried and can be made with chicken, pork, or vegetables. Our favorite thai restaurant in Alameda !! We order takeout from here pretty regularly. The tom yum soup is delicious and perfect on a cold night. We have had a variety of their dishes including most of their noodle items, roti, mango chicken, yellow curry and green curry and we have not been disappointed yet. Right next door to Tuckers so you can pick up your meal and dessert at the same time. Oh also they have specially priced lunch specials - who doesn't love a good lunch special. Everything I've had here is soooooo good! Yum yum yum! Their noodle soup... can't remember what it was called on the menu, I called it Kathew... was delicious! It's Thai version of Vietnamese pho. A little spicy, but worth the burn. (I have a low tolerance for spicy). So so so so tasty! We also ordered the chicken pad thai. Yummy. The mango chicken had great flavor too. The chicken was more breaded than I was expecting, but still good. Pumpkin curry is something they offer that I don't see many other places offer, and it was very good. A little spicy, but again worth trying. We also had an egg noodle dish (raat naa mii krob) with the noodles covered in gravy with vegetables and chicken. Good too. Like chicken chow mein. Would definitely recommend this place to others. If I have room next time I'll try the mango sticky rice. Looks so good! read more

This is my second time because Alameda parking is a mess sometimes. But I Found a parking this time for my son's haircut and able to walk 2 blocks to try it again. Restaurant is always clean and modern. Services is super fast!! You sit down and someone already ask if you want your drink. Very smooth operation. Great turn around and often ask if you are happy with the food even of it was crowed. Love their angel wings, crab fried rice, and curry is delish no matter which one.
