Downtown Alameda has been. "Happening" place of late. It seems like every restaurant we want to go to has at least a 45 minute wait. Too long to wait and no where seems to take reservations. One of my favorite restaurants, the Burmese one on Park, had at least an hour wait last night and our out of town guests were hungry and the idea of ANY wait seemed foreign to them. But we'll cut them some slack, they're from San Luis Obispo. Anyway, we walked back to Spice I Am, on the same block, as when we walked by it we saw an empty table for four - just what we needed.
The place is nicely appointed, pretty in fact. Very clean. And the tables were not crowded tightly together like the Burmese place. It took longer than I thought it should to get a glass of water. But we were seated right away and given menues. New twists on old favorites. I love deep fried tofu with a peanut sauce. They had something called Tofu Fries. They arrived at the table, served in a drinking glass, fries standing up in the glass with the peanut sauce at the bottom. Novel! And good. But eat them quickly because any left in the glass with the thick peanut sauce became soggy and not white as tasty. I would suggest not serving the fries already in the sauce, but serving the sauce on the side, like potato fries and ketchup. No one would serve the potato fries already sitting in the ketchup.
And now to the Pad Thai. WOW! I LOVE Pad Thai and this may have been some of the best I have ever had. I asked for extra tofu since I wasn't having any meat and there was so much tofu, there was tofu in every bite. No fish sauce taste. Sweet, no chili kick, which I missed, but so good, who cares? The bean sprouts were fresh, crisp, and sweet. I can't remember when I have had Pad Thai with as fresh bean sprouts. And then we ordered Tofu Spring Rolls. The presentation was wonderful, the peanut sauce was NOT the peanut sauce from the Tofu Fries. They actually have different peanut sauces for different dishes. They were tightly rolled with fresh veggies, tofu and avocado. Really, really good. And then we ordered the Crispy Chicken Wings. Everyone at the table chose these as the standout dish of the night. Yum! Others at the table had the Eggplant Salad with Scallops and said it was great. You could see each ingredient separately which suggests that it was composed when ordered and was not a made-ahead dish. The Basil and Garlic Chicken was OK, but maybe just because in comparison to the appetizers we ordered which were superb, almost anything would seem average. A Crispy Duck was ordered for the table and it was better than the chicken dish, but again, everything was in comparison to really great appetizers.
So long story short, thank you Burmese restaurant, your wait was too long and we have now found our new favorite. I'm a bit nervous about giving Spice I Am a rave review for fear of not being able to get in next time, but fair is fair, the restaurant outshines all the other Thai restaurants on the Island. read more
