This a place a few of my friends go to alot... they rave about it. Another used to love it, and now thinks its garbage. I'm kinda in the middle. I had the green chili omelette, hashbrowns, sour dough toast, and a side of biscuits and gravy. The green chili was tasty, omelette was good, the toast was ok, and the biscuits and gravy was better than good tasting. The rub was the execution... cold biscuits and gravy, soggy toast, heavy omelette. The hashbrowns were inedible... seriously tasted like plastic and didnt resemble any other hashbrowns I had ever seen. No one else ate them either, and reading other yelp reviews, you can definitely skip them. The coffee was ok. I guess the whole experience was ok, meh, I've definitely experienced better. The best part was the service and courteousness of the cook/owner. Lots of attention and refills on coffee and water. I dunno... it kinda sucks giving this place 2 stars... wish it would have blown me away. read more

Negative. How many times can you refill a water glass before taking my drink order for a cup of coffee? Four apparently. The French toast - when it finally arrived - looked awful and it was as soggy as it was ugly. The service here was ridiculous. The entire restaurant was patiently mumbling their frustration of slow inadequate service. If you want a great brunch don't go here. If you want to try your patience, and you have a good 2 hours to kill without a mimosa, then give it a try. read more

Love, love, love this restaurant! Two things anyone going to spices should know before stepping foot inside. First, they do NOT serve alcohol, so if bottomless mimosa brunch is what you are wanting, this is not the place for you. Second, this is not a sit-down and be served restaurant. The menu's are by the door, once you know what you want you place your order at the counter and then find a table. The food is brought out but that is where the service stops. While these facts did not bother me at all, I know that a lot of people just want a long, lazy, boozy weekend brunch, and this is not the place for that. However, the food is SO GOOD! Like out of this world good, and made from scratch. The prices are really great, we both had a full plate, coffee, and french toast to share, and the total was less than $30 including the tip. I ordered the green chili omlet, which was fresh, large and packed with flavor. My dining companion had the bisquits and crazy and was very happy, the flavor of the gravy was great and not overly salted. But the highlight for both of us was the sourdough french toast. O M G... The toast was perfectly cooked, soft on the inside and covered with the perfect amount of sugar. The coffee wasn't great, but like I mentioned this is not a gourment sit-down establishment. The patio was roomy and comfortable, and despite being directly off Colfax we had minimal weirdo's walk by. All in all one of the best breakfast meals I have had in Denver, and cannot wait to go back for more. read more

First impression. A little homey. Needs an uplift or a good cleaning. But eh, we tried it. My friends and I went here for breakfast and the experience was horrible. Being our first time, the owner behaved rudely with a matter of fact response when inquiring about the breakfast dishes. When asked for potatoes he basically ignored us and attempted to help another customer? When we said, can we complete our order since we were first? He gave the new customer a look as if WE were inconveniencing him? I don't care if this man is or was a chef. He should use his salty (bad mood) behavior to season his runny biscuits and gravy. Cozy cafe with friendly service and scrumptious, reasonably priced food. I had the Chicken Breast/Sun Dried Tomato Sandwich and my son had the Chicken Breast/Portobello Mushroom Sandwich. The chicken is not a processed version like in a Panera sandwich, but the real deal rotisserie chicken breast, moist and well seasoned. The sandwiches come with crisp kosher pickles and the best cole slaw I've ever had (you can also choose fruit, fries or chips). It's too bad I don't live closer to Spices. If I did, it would be my go to lunch spot! read more

I was further impressed by the staff after I forgot a protein mixer there and after several weeks the staff remembered that I left it there and gave it back to me! I have been to this place several times over the years, and have had the pleasure of watching it grow and change. Tucked in behind park ave off colfax, its quiet somehow even with the large blvd so close by. The guy Michael is awesome and greets most if not every customer himself. Not only that he remembers you the next time and just seems like a good person. After taking your order he takes his time and prepares a dish as if you are in his personal 12 table dining room in his home. Ingredients are always fresh, and if you're looking for a well priced breakfast, go there. Usually don't have to wait long to get a table and the cinnamon french toast is the best in Denver, hands down. Stay away from the bacon. that's the only down side. read more

I've been here a handful of times over the last year, and every time I've been here, both during busy and slow times, the food has been consistently good and inexpensive. Price wise, probably one of the better deals you'll find for breakfast in town for the quality. At places like Snooze, by comparison, you'll pay 20-30% more for your food and will probably have to wait a LONG time to be seated. Spices is a small, local restaurant that likely won't suit everyone's expections. For one, they do not have many waitstaff or bussers. Usually, I've seen a cook in the back, one waiter, and one busser. This place can keep costs down by having a small staff, which has its downsides, especially when they are busy. Even when the place was full inside and on the patio, however, they managed to serve my party of four rather efficiently. Initially, we had to wait about 10 minutes to order, but I wasn't going there in a hurry on a Sunday morning. If you are impatient, go elsewhere (but not Snooze! lol). Spices is charming and low key, and I'll continue to go there for the prices, quality of food, and convenient location. read more

One of my favorite little gems. Spices is perfect for a casual breakfast or lunch- the food, while nothing fancy, is very tasty and 'hits the spot'. Part of the charm is in the owner- he is very nice without being overbearing, and you can tell he's a good guy. The prices are very low and reasonable. Sometimes the service is a little slow, and that's because there is usually only one (sometimes two) servers. Other reviews have thrown shade at the space between tables. As a person who has a moderate amount of social anxiety (constantly thinking people are staring at me or listening to me), I experienced no anxiety about the close proximity of the other patrons. That being said, this isn't ideal for a first date, as it is quite cozy. The decor is simple and there is plenty of reading material for a casual lunch. Try this unpretentious little place if you are in the mood for something simple and reliable. read more

I actually found this place through Yelp because I don't know Denver at all and being that I was visiting Colorado all last week and would be in Denver for an afternoon I wanted to try a place to eat. My dad and I ended up here and I instantly liked it. The owner was friendly, the place was freshly decorated, and the food was great. I had Chicken Portobello sandwich, and when it arrived I must say I was a little discouraged by the size. However, what it lacked for in volume it most certainly made up for in flavor. It was definitely one of the better sandwiches I've had in awhile. The chicken meat was juicy, cooked well, and sliced not too thickly, but not too thinly. The mushrooms were wonderful and prepared perfectly so they retained that wonderful meaty flavor. The parmesan artichoke spread on the bread was splendid and complimented the sandwich bringing it all together. It felt insanely healthy which I appreciate tremendously. Also the onion rings that came with it were DELICIOUS! They were light and crispy, perfectly fried. They were so good and light that you almost felt you were eating something healthy. Consistently delicious! The restaurant is simple and cute, and you can tell that the main gentleman who is always there (who I believe owns it?) really cares about the food and service you receive. We really enjoy this place for quick weekend brunch and lunch. It's really small but usually not a lot of wait or too crowded. Nice casual atmosphere. It was my first time visiting Colorado with my husband. As always we were reading the reviews about some local eateries and we ended up finding some decent comments for the Spices Café. Well, that place might not look as anything much, hidden on the back of a different establishment, but the food is much better than a lot of small restaurants and even some high rated ones that we have been to. The first thing that made a good impression to me was the freshly watered flowers on the patio. Usually establishments that take care of their plants also tend to have above average cuisine. We were greeted warmly and offered coffee within a minute of sitting at the table. The menu looked quite extensive for such a small place. I ended up ordering French toast with ham and my husband had the Denver omelette with pancakes. I have never had a better French toast in my life as I was born and raised in Europe, travelled quite a lot and tasted some pretty good French toasts. Well, the waiter that I believe is also the owner of the place said that is a recipe he came up with. He did not share any of the ingredients but I can still sense the flavor of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, may be a little bit of nutmeg and brown sugar on the toast. Amazing, I would recommend it to anybody! It is getting even better now that the toast was so tasty I had to poor some maple syrup on it, only to realize that was not the real thing. I did not mean any offence but as a person coming from Vermont I had to check if they had any of the real maple syrup. Guess what??? A small metal can of real maple syrup was brought to our table before I knew it. My husband and I were extremely happy. He even used the syrup for his pancakes that were very light and fluffy. After such a great first experience we ended up going to the Spices café for our second and last breakfast in Denver and we were not disappointed at all! I would highly recommend this charming place to anybody that enjoys simple atmosphere and a five star cuisine! read more

I didn't even want to write this review for a while because it's our secret little place that doesn't have an hour (or any) wait. The same guy works every day... No words. That was a horrible experience. We ordered something that was loaded with onions, despite the menu not saying it had onions at all. I had to take it back to the guy asking if we could do something else, because my wife is allergic. It was embarrassing to have to ask and I felt really bad to do so, but the fact that this guy treated me and my wife like we just insulted him and his talking down to both of us ruined the whole experience of a brunch date. The guy actually slammed the dish into a bucket loudly behind us. The only option he really gave us was something that was less expensive than the thing we ordered in the first place. It was supposed to come with hashbrowns and toast, but he omitted that from the new order saying that they had onions in them too - I never knew toast had onions! At that point, and with the food tasting awful, we left. It's sad, because it could've been an entirely different experience if we had been treated differently. What a shame. We were kind enough and no place of business should ever talk down to their customers. read more

We went there for lunch- great choices! We had the special- a delicious chicken salad; and huevos rancheros. Both were excellent.
