I noticed this small, Italian restaurant since moved to the neighborhood. It reminds me the small kitchen/ restaurant I love in Rome and Milan. Has a great neighborhood vibe. I can on Thursday night. It was busy. Tables lined the side wall. It doesn't have an actual dinning room. So it's al fresco. A small menu but that's expected. The salmon tartar started was fresh and well portioned. Could have a bit more caper and wedge of lemon would be nicer. For main, I tried the squid ink pasta with seafood (squid and shrimp). The pasta was al dente, the tomato sauce made fresh, with just the right amount of garlic. I don't believe it has license so everyone brings their own bottle of wine. I did not know. So not wine! The best Gnocchi I've ever had as well as the best Tiramisu...and I don't even generally like Tiramisu. The owners were very welcoming and also functioned as our servers. This food was amazing! The pesto was actually to die for. Personally pesto is always my favorite pasta so i'm a bit biased, but the burrata and pistachios on top added such a nice touch compared to others i've had. I also shared the bolognese and paccheri alla norma (recommend by the waiter) with my friends and we loved every single one of them equally. The space is small and cozy, and can quickly get busy, but they accept reservations. Service is great and Marco, the owner, is very friendly and attentive. An example: An increase from the 20.95 $ to 43 $ (!!) for a simple chicken tomato mozzarella is just an insult to people' s intelligence and good faith, even more for those who are pretty familiar with Italian cuisine. No wonder the majority of comments here refer to the time prior to the change ownership: with Luigi, it certainly deserved 4 or 5 stars. Updating my review to share that I've discovered my favorite thing (not) on their menu: HIGHLY recommend ordering the penne with tomato mozzarella sauce (the sauce paired with gnocchi on the menu). I'm not a huge gnocchi person but am obsessed with their fresh, bright, tomato sauce. Paired with the penne (perfectly al dente), it's a dish I keep craving and going back for!!! PS. This restaurant is a gem. It is so romantic and has a real local feel. I love that it is BYOB. The food for us was a 3.5/5 stars BUT we did come on July 4th for dinner. I imagine after a long weekend everyone including chef may be tired. So I need to try again and give a fair chance. However, our waiter, Gustavo, was an absolute gem. My friend and I had a leisure dinner at this tiny place, though it may have been, because the the UWS crowds are away for the 4th of July weekend;) The waiter was very courteous, and gave us his recommendations on what to order as he poured the wine, we had brought to pair our dinner. The BYOB is definitely the most attractive and convenient feature of Spiga To Go. We had Timballo Di zucchini, which was a lovely looking pouch of perfectly cooked zucchini with cheese in between- though One couldn't tell what kind of cheese it was- it was all very, very bland. Our Riccota E Spinaci Ravioli Burro E Salvia was a disappointment. Not only there was no Riccota in the ravioli, the sauce was more tomao-ish, with drizzled oil, and a lot of parsley instead of Burro E Salvia. When we brought this to the waiter's attention, he insisted the Riccota must have melted- Hum! He's probably not familiar with Ricotta cheese.- For ricotta can soften, but not melt nor disappear. The only good dish was Linguine Nere with shrimp and calamari. Pasta, shrimp and calamari were cooked to perfection, and the sauce was tasty enough. read more

How many times can I say "wow" in one review? We were so fortunate that this place was right down the street from our rental in NYC. We had a short window of time between show tickets and my husband popped in to send us a picture of the amazing sounding menu. It is more of a to-go spot but since it was an off time our party of four fit perfectly in there at two of the tables. We were greeted with amazing hospitality right off the bat! My husband went and grabbed a bottle of wine for us to enjoy and then we let the owner take the lead on what we should order. For starters we had the artichoke salad and the eggplant. I could go on and on about the eggplant, my only compliant was that we only ordered one! Entrees were all amazing and we couldn't agree on which we liked the best - gnocchi, squid ink pasta and bolognese. Each was incredible in its own way and we would order every single one again. We reluctantly ordered dessert since we were so full but after tasting the incredible Napoleon we had to try the Tiramisu and we were glad we did! This is Spiga's to-go concept that was incorporated after their main restaurant closed an avenue over some time last year. There's a few tables to sit down if you prefer to eat in, but it's really a to-go or delivery spot. The owners are fabulous making everything from scratch. The quality of the food is top notch and the flavors are wonderful. So far I've tried the linguine and the soup of the day. Both were freshly prepared. Despite the small and unfussy interior, it's packed every weekend. BYOB. I live nearby so I normally take it to go. My order is always ready in 15-20 minutes. I've lived in Rome and this spot takes me back. The pasta is always al dente and the sauces are always rich and flavorful. I love the meatballs as a starter and the fettuccine bolognese, linguini nere, or trenette al pesto pasta as a main.
