Celeste is a cozy, authentic Italian restaurant located in the Upper West Side on 84th and Amsterdam. It's known for offering high-quality, traditional Italian dishes with reasonable prices. The restaurant has a casual, rustic ambiance, with simple decor, giving it a charming neighborhood feel. Outdoor seating is also available. Known for its homemade pastas, and daily specials. Vermicelli Allen Vongole was thin spaghetti cooked Al dente and topped with steamed clams in a nice white wine olive oil sauce. The owner, Carmine, is usually on premise and known for his hands-on approach and warm hospitality. The restaurant doesn't take reservations and only takes cash. There are usually lines but if you can get a table you're in for a treat.

Food 5/10 So many people have raved about this hidden gem on the UWS. I checked it out for a friend's birthday, and unfortunately the only thing I enjoyed was the tiramisu, which was actually super solid. The vongole was quite bland, lacked bounce, and the clams did not taste very fresh. The quattro pizza was also quite dry and brick hard, not particularly appetizing. Atmosphere 6/10 Seating was a bit cramped and it was also quite hot inside. Service 7/10 Cash only! Very friendly home-style service.

If I could get more of my rigatoni a La Norma and eat it every day I would. Everything was delicious. The wine selections are good, every meal on the table, including the specials better than the next, and the desserts? Oh my.

Is the service awful? Yes. Will I keep coming back even though they really make it clear they don't care if you ever come again? Yes, definitely. The shaved raw baby artichokes are so good. SO GOOD. First, where can you find someone who is willing to individually hand peel and shave a pile of baby artichokes for you? Nowhere. But they're also so fresh, rich with Parmesan cheese, and bright with a squeeze of fresh lemon. The Penne Mo Mo is another dish I could eat over and over again. It's just a plate of pasta with red sauce. But the fresh mozzarella is so so fresh, it tastes nothing like those "fresh mozzarella" balls from the grocery store. It's so milky, creamy, so good. No, there's no ambiance. Not really any air conditioning either. But where else can you find such fresh artichokes and mozzarella? Nowhere

Vibe: 5/10 - cute Italian vibe, but our table was really wobbly + some tables were being used for storage (things were stacked on them) Service: 6/10 Value: 6/10 - mainly bc we felt we could have made this meal at home Bread (complimentary): 5/10 Gnocchi: 6/10 - light on the sauce and the sauce wasn't flavorful + gnocchi didn't seem to be freshly made Pizza w/ mushrooms: 6.5/10 Tiramisu: 8/10 - the best part of the meal honestly Overall: 6.07/10 (3/5)

If you want fast and decent Italian meal this is it. We couldn't wait for Jacob's Pickle so we decided to eat here. It was busy so we dined outside. The cleanliness of this restaurant was okay. Not the cleanest but alright. They give you clear colored plastic resusable cups all scratched up, but it's fine. The water tastes clean and the cups are not dirty. This goes for the plates and utensils too. The old gentleman here seems to be the owner or manager who greets you first. We ordered MASCARPONE CON PROSCIUTTO pizza and Tagliatelle Bolognese. The food was fast and delicious. We enjoyed it.

We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday and sat outside in the covered street seating area. Service was quick and friendly, which was great! The plates felt a bit dirty / had some dust on them but just wiped it off. Really enjoyed the bread and ricotta we started with! The margherita pizza was quite good with the thin crust. The lasagna was decent but a bit overcooked and the white sauce was just too heavy and thick for me. Did not particularly enjoy the spaghetti and clams because it didn't feel super fresh and the noodles were way too heavy with the sauce coating - just felt super oily. Overall, don't think I will be back unfortunately because everything felt pretty mediocre. Good to try though!

First time visiting Celeste, and I was absolutely blown away. The food was fresh, the food was served very quickly (delivered to our table less than 10 minutes after ordering), and the service was attentive. I was also impressed with the amount of options on the menu--pastas, pizzas, seafood dishes, salads, appetizers, and desserts will leave you wanting to try a lot of different things, but I don't think you can go wrong. I'll definitely be back!

Came here for brunch, which is a separate menu from other meals. Prices are extraordinary for this part of Manhattan, but it's cash only. Owner and servers were very nice. Loved the bread they served with olive oil, I saw them freshly toast it in their pizza oven. For the actual meal I got the farro meal, which was creamy farro with a lot of butter, and bits of dried fruit topped in honey. Delicious, creamy, but a little too heavy. Space was cozy and the staff rearranged the tables for our very large group. I would love to return to try out some of their other items.

Celeste was a WOW - I'm shocked by some of the lukewarm reviews on Yelp. My friends highly recommended we come here and I was sincerely wowed by all the dishes we had. Make sure to order a pizza. That thin crust margherita pizza was perfectly seasoned with salt and tomato paste and cheesy - might be one of my favorite pizzas in the city. The real star of the show for me, though, was the clam vermicelli... I dream about that buttery, garlic-y pasta to this day. Also loved the lasagna and tiramisu was a must-try! Great service as well. This is definitely an Italian spot I'll be returning to.

Baba Al Rum was also tasty, as was the Orecchiette. Rigatoni was salty, but well-flavored. I visited a popular Italian restaurant from the Union Square Hospitality group with a group of five others. The restaurant is quite large, and although it was somewhat noisy, the tables were spaced apart enough that it was easy to hear everyone. We had an early dinner at 5:45 PM, which took quite a while, but I didn't mind. To drink, I went with the Bitter Giuseppe for $19, with Cynar 45.3, Punt e Mes, lemon, and sea salt. I'm a fan of most Negronis, and this was a particularly bitter version. The bit of lemon and sea salt added a unique but enjoyable flavor at the end, though in retrospect, the salt probably wasn't super necessary. Two of us split, and eventually, a few of us ordered their signature appetizer, the $18 Cast Iron Focaccia, with tomato conserva, a mixture of crushed tomatoes, olive oil, and Calabrian chili. The bread was fresh and warm, albeit a tad oily and salty, but it paired wonderfully with the conserva. As someone who doesn't like it when bread is extra, this was delicious and worth it. Another person ordered the $18 Insalata Verde. It was very large, but fairly basic, with a vinaigrette that had a citrusy and mustardy flavor. There was also the Caramelized Onion Torta for $27, which was very large, as expected for the price point. It had a creamy and tangy flavor from the Pecorino Toscano with some sweetness from the onion. It was delicious, but very heavy, and I would recommend that around three or four people split it alongside the focaccia. Finally, there was also the $15 Pizza Bianca, which was easily the smallest of all the plates, but they still enjoyed it. My main dish was the Orecchiette for $26, with ramps, pistachio, and pecorino. Like most of their dishes, the portion size was quite large, with plenty of pasta, which was perfectly cooked. The ramps added a touch of sweetness, although I would have liked a few more nuts. Additionally, there was almost too much pecorino, which made the dish slightly salty, but it was still enjoyable. As a side, I got the $19 Grilled Asparagus with dates, vermouth, and blue cheese, which came with many pieces of lightly charred asparagus. While there was plenty of funky blue cheese, I would have preferred more dates. Two of the others got the Rigatoni Alla Gricia for $30. The portion was large, and I tried a bit while they tried mine. The noodles were again cooked perfectly, and while there was a lot of guanciale, this was easily the saltiest of all the dishes. For dessert, I chose their Baba AU Rum for $18, which was uniquely mixed with chocolate and orange. The presentation was a bit off, as it looked like a certain emoji, but the flavor made up for it. The subtle hint of rum paired with the bitter-sweet chocolate and orange. The dark chocolate-covered orange slice on top was a nice touch as well. Someone else got a tart, and one other person got the Gelati, which resulted in one of the only faults during service. She heard it was two scoops, and ordered espresso stracciatella and hazelnut, but was given two separate orders for $12 each. The gelato was good, but unlike most things, definitely not worth it for the price. I liked the appetizers much more, but I found the food good overall. Tasty dessert, and the portions make up at least a bit for the relatively higher prices.

We started with the housemade focaccia and Wagyu carpaccio--both were outstanding, with the perfect balance of crispy, flavorful, and fresh elements. We finished with the famous olive oil cake, which we loved for its subtly sweet, moist and tender bite. Served with lightly whipped cream and raisins, the combination was surprisingly delicious. We were also touched by the complimentary anniversary scoop of ice cream. The interior seating is a bit snug, but the decor is beautiful--elegant yet homey. The service was good as well. Overall, we highly recommend L'Artusi for a special night out!

L'Artusi has been on my radar for a while, ever since I heard it was a hot spot and saw reviews of…read moreit being one of the best Italian restaurants in NYC. Being Italian American, I'm hypercritical of spots like these - but nevertheless the positive reviews were overwhelming so I wanted to check it out for myself. One of my friends and I were looking to catch up, so I booked a table and off we went. While it can be tricky to get a reservation during prime dinner time, it's relatively easy to get a lunch reservation - or an early/late dinner. I managed to get a reservation for dinner at 9:15pm which was the earliest I could find. The restaurant is pretty unassuming on the outside - it looks like a converted brownstone and once inside we were greeted by a large space with a sceney vibe. The space is split between two levels with a large bar up front and a semi-open kitchen in the back. The decor was modern - with lots of greys and neutral tones which was a little unexpected. The main star of the menu is pasta, but they also have a few non-pasta mains as well as some crudo selections, apps, and sides. We decided to get a few apps, two pastas, and one side. To start, we went with the octopus, roasted mushrooms, burrata crostone, and focaccia. These were all really good, but my favorite was the mushrooms. I'm usually not a fan of mushrooms but these were prepared with red pepper and fried egg and were delicious; it cut through the earthiness and changed the texture to something I really enjoyed. The focaccia was also a standout - it's house made and was paired with a peppery oil that complemented the bread well. For mains we split two pastas - the caccio e pepe and the rigatoni. Both of these were very good, though I felt the rigatoni was the stronger dish. It was prepared with sausage ragu, soppressata, broccoli rabe pesto, and pecorino. The flavors worked really well together and the pasta was cooked al dente. The caccio e pepe was perfectly fine, I just feel it's been overplayed and didn't feel there was anything that stood out amongst the others I've tried. We also got a broccoli rabe as a side which was great. We couldn't leave without dessert and decided to get their olive oil cake and quattro formaggio cheesecake. The restaurant is known for the former - it was perfectly fine but I've had olive oil cakes elsewhere of the same or better quality. The cheesecake was the stronger dessert IMO - the combination of cheeses gave it an interesting, almost savory flavor. The brûlée top and mascerated strawberries were great texture and flavor complements. Service was great - the place was packed but service was consistently on point and everyone was friendly. Overall, I had a good experience at L'Artusi. While everything was very good, I'm struggling to find the exact reason why this place became such a hot spot compared to other Italian spots in the city. Nevertheless, you'll have a good meal here and I would definitely return if given the opportunity.

Second the waiter who took our order was polite and on point with specials and knowledge of the menu. He (just never caught his name) suggested the Rigatoni which chicken and sausage.
