Unlike the Long Beach location that we visited today, this spires, Tustin, that we visited two days earlier, is a real winner! The food was hands over more tasty than the other location, and we're talking about the spaghetti, we're talking about the beef eater, and the soup! This location has the upgraded bathrooms. Spires a special meaning to me, My son and I used to visit the one in Long Beach before it was torn down and made a Starbucks. We had a very unpleasant breakfast at Spires. My wife ordered bacon and eggs with coffee. I ordered a bacon, avocado and cheese omelet. It wasn't even an omelet. Looked like someone threw a couple eggs in a pan, chopped it up a bit and threw in a tiny amount of bacon. Most of the avocado was hard...needed a knife to cut it up. This place is a flash back in time. Place still has some of that old time charm of days past. The booths are cozy and the older clientele added to the vibe overall. Had the bacon cheeseburger with fries and it was pretty good. The servers were all pretty attentive and quick to bring you something to drink and asked if you needed any extra condiments. The waffles tend to be soft and warm--they're good, but nothing to write home about. I love how incredibly fluffy and breaded the sides of steak fries come out. Each fry packs a wallop of unadulterated potato flavor. The fries are not savory. If hunger is the task though, a side of Spire's fries will certainly get the hard work done. Because Spire's tends to serve food known for being fantastically bland, I opted for the most grandiose manifestation of blandness I could espy on the menu. I asked for chicken strips with a side of fries. Of course I did not bother with picking out or requesting a dipping sauce. A condiment would have upset the perfect boredom the dish already promised. No, I wanted stripes of breaded, unseasoned chicken and fries that cried out for ketchup at least. I knew I would not be using ketchup on them though. What a dry potato chicken plate awaited my eager teeth. I would prefer to conclude this review with some evaluation of the flavors in the strips and fries. I honestly do not remember a distinct flavor at all. The fries and the chicken strips might not have tipped off nary a taste bud. I do remember that a waiter asked me if I wanted any dipping sauce. Because the waiter forced me to revisit my initial sauce austerity, I ordered a cup of ranch. So maybe that is the only flavor the strips or the fries really managed to develop: Ranch dressing flavor. Thank you Spires for being nothing and everything to me. Apocryphal text: There used to be a rather fabulous OJ machine at Spires. One could watch the oranges roll through an elaborate and senseless contraption that crushed them into juice. I would love to see that brought back. So few restaurants have any unique or non-formulaic details about them. The OJ machine set Spires apart from other diners that serve dining food. What a fun place to eat! I ordered a sandwich to go but was completely enthralled by the atmosphere, and uniforms. I felt like I had stepped back in time. I went with the turkey sandwich, loved the cranberry on it and it was extremely generous serving. It was more than I could eat in one sitting with the french fries. Service was great! Tired. Hungry. And did I mention tired? All of our usual family spots were packed on a Saturday night, and we ended up at Spires for the first time in at least a decade basically by default. Reviews should be given & taken in context, and the reality is that Spires did a fantastic job given the expectations. The food was solid (we had burgers, tuna salad & chicken fingers) and the brownie sundae & chocolate cake were terrific. Sounds silly, but great iced tea, and the prices were a great value given the (large) portion size. Most importantly - the staff. Working during Covid sucks. Working on a Saturday night sucks too. These guys were on it. Super nice people. Fast service. Drink refills. They seemed to appreciate that we went out to eat during this madness, and they did a great job taking care of things. Today was our 2nd dinner experience here. Spires used to be located everywhere. Today they're far and few in-between . 2 weeks ago we tried this Tustin location. The menu is quite extraordinary considering it's a diner. Prices are the best around and daily specials only add to their appeal. Choice of soup (homemade), salad, entrie, 2 sides, garlic bread or roll and dessert are included in the price. (12 to 15 dollars on this day. The navy bean soup was served as a bowl. The best that I can remember. The 1/2 fried chicken included 4 pieces. My wife had the hamburger steak. We were pleased with our choices however the service that we received was really top drawer. We are not located close to the Tustin restaurant, but since it is the only Spires around, eating there when in the area will be looked forward too. Value for the money. read more

Tried to here today with my family but was told I couldn't bring in my Starbucks iced mocha I'd just gotten from the Starbucks in the same strip center literally across the parking lot from the restaurant. Seriously?? Business is so good you'd turn away what would have been a $60+ check over an iced mocha THAT SPIRES DOESN'T OFFER!!!! Very shortsighted and we won't be back. I just want to preface that I don't do this often or complain about anything. I've worked in the food industry for a long time and I understand that not everyday everything will be perfect or has to be. With that being said, we came to Spire's for lunch. It was a party of 6 and we all got food. My youngest got the chicken Alfredo. All the other food was good and we finished it. My daughter didn't finish it or even made a dent into it. We asked her why and she said she just didn't like the flavor of it. She's pretty good about finishing her food but this one from the restaurant wasn't her favorite. I brought it up to the waitress and she said that it was too late in the meal to ask for it to be removed. We asked why since the food hadn't really been touched. She brought the supervisor and he said that for all we know, she got full and didn't want it anymore. I told him that I gave him part of my meal since she was still hungry and she ate that just fine. He then said that if we had said something sooner then they could have removed it from the bill. He said to take it home but I told him that my youngest didn't like it and that she wouldn't eat it later. I asked to speak with the manager instead to see if perhaps he can see what I meant. The manager came by. His name was Jesus/Jesse. He said that he couldn't and that his store sells tons of pasta and nobody ever complains about it. That he stand by food. I told him that I understand but my daughter didn't like it and didn't make a dent on the food. He said "well I don't know what to tell you, we sell a lot of pasta and it never has issues". I understood it as "well it seems like your daughter is the problem here, not the food". To keep this from going on over a meal, I decided to pay for it. I asked to get corporates number or the person he answered to and he refused to give me that information. The waitress also had written down his information but quickly took it back when the manager and supervisor told her something. The manager was unprofessional and so was the supervisor for not allowing me to get that information. Be careful when going to this restaurant. read more

He's been going most of his life and gets the same thing everytime (hot roast beef sandwich) so when the family wanted to try someplace new we decided on spires. The place is a time capsule, it had the feel of an old diner with comfort food and a relaxed feel. Service was quick and attentive, Food portions are generous and food tasted great. You honestly can't beat that price anywhere. The pros: a ton of food. You get the soup to start off on. I got the clam chowder. Yummy. Then I got the salad with Italian dressing. Nothing special but pretty good. Then I got the steak. Yeah it was good for $10! Last we got ice cream. Tons of diff flavors but I opted for the sorbet. Anyway all that for $10!!
