I actually stumbled upon Spires totally by accident. What happened was there is an El Pollo Loco that's right next door and my girl and I wanted to get us some delicious Pollo Bowls or Flame Broiled chicken, but you know what's more disappointing than finding out that the El Pollo Loco is closed? It's finding out that the staff just suddenly decides to close 30 minutes early. We walked up to the El Pollo Loco and find the doors locked and an employee shake his head and dismissively waved his hand. WTF? You just don't want to make anymore money for the night? Store is doing gangbusters and sold out of chicken? Lame-O!!! Anyways, walked back to the truck all dejected until we see the Spires sign lighting up the night sky like some kind of lighthouse directing lost ships to safety and away from the suckiness that is El Pollo Loco (at least that specific location). We drive the short distance and park then walk in. It was later in the evening so there weren't that many customers. The place had an old timey diner feel and we were seated immediately. The menu items had the usual American cuisine of fried chicken, steak dinners, pot roast, sandwiches, breakfast stuff, etc. Nothing really exotic, but more along the lines of comfort food. The prices were pretty reasonable and selection was good. They even had one of those display stands right at the front advertising their specials. We ended up with sandwiches with fries and onion rings. I had the Turkey BTL and my girl had the chicken club. Both were tasty likely seasoned by our hunger and deep anger and vengeance we felt toward El Pollo Loco for denying us of beans, chicken and rice. I may have anger issues..... Anyhow, Spires was so tasty that we ended up going again about a week later to try it again. It didn't disappoint. Also I may or may not have cursed out El Pollo Loco as I drove by. read more

I love this place! It's a classic diner! Not like Denny's! The servers was super nice and prompt. Most of the patrons are seniors and you can tell how sweet the servers are to accommodate the older patrons. Food is great too. I've been coming to Spires with my family since I was a baby. We used to go to the Westminster location all the time until it closed. After that we migrated to the Garden Grove location until it changed to Goldenwest Diner as well as the one in Anaheim . They serve the same food but the vibe just isn't the same. I really hope this Spires stays Spires. It has always been my favorite restaurant because of all the memories it holds. They also have great food for great prices. I love this old-fashioned diner. I stop by usually while my electric car charges. The inside looks like its from the Golden Girls with floral print, Norman Rockwell paintings, with mint and mauve decor. The food is fresh and the staff is always very nice and pretty quick. Been a long long time since I've been to a Spires restaurant. But my sister-in-law goes every Saturday for breakfast and recommended it when we all happened to be in the area. Normally I think of them in same category as a Norm's, reliable and consistent home style American food cooking. This time though Spires missed the mark. I had heard their meatloaf was good and you had a choice of tomato based sauce or brown gravy. I love anything tomato based so I chose the first one. It came with a thin tomato based sauce with bell peppers (green-the bitter tasting ones) , celery and I believe, onions plus it had a spice that made it a tad spicy. Not at all what I thought it would be, nor what I've experienced in a tomato based meatloaf sauce before. The meatloaf itself was odd tasting and might have been pre-formed frozen. Not good. I selected soup rather than salad. The choices were chicken & rice, veg barley or vegetable. I selected chicken & rice since I'd be eating an entree with tomato based sauce. It was obviously diluted and watered down to go further. You could tell there was good overall flavor but watered down. I asked to have it replaced with the tomato based veg barley which was excellent. Service started out with a bang, excellent. However once they sat a party of eight nearby our server has scarcely seen. He forgot to bring the replaced soup till after our entrees were served. The requested extra butter and sour cream were delivered but with wrong ingredients. Extra water? We had to track down another server to get for us. Once we were finished we patiently waited over ten minutes minimum for our bill. None came. Finally, the four of us got up and proceeded to the cashier.....THAT got someone's attention. Lol. The bill was settled at the cashier. Overall, not a great experience. I'd give them another try in future though. read more

It's Friday night, I just got off from work I was really looking forward to some food. So I went to this restaurant I order the fettuccini Alfredo with chicken and I rated a 1 out of 5 . The pasta as watery and no flavor and it wasn't hot. The only hot was the chicken I'm guessing the pasta was done and they were just waiting for the chicken to be ready and maybe that's why the pasta was cold. The cashier gave me a freaking attitude because I wanted a receipt when I went to pay for my food. He said he was out of paper. It felt like he didn't want to give me my receipt. Seriously though for a place like this -- equivalent to IHOP, Denny's et al, Spires is pretty darn good. It was on the late side and everyone agreed, no IHOP or Denny's and Ruby's stopped serving breakfast about an hour and a half ago. Not wanting to fight the crowds in Costa Mesa we decided to give Spires another try. We haven't been here in a while. We were seated immediately, drinks were brought swiftly. They had a July special breakfast for $4.99 which included 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, 1 sausage and either 2 pancakes or a waffle. I wanted toast but they don't do substitutions on the special but I got it anyway since the young man wanted pancakes. The young man got the kid's breakfast which included: 2 eggs, 2 bacon (sausage or ham), hash brown and toast. Hubby got the daily special of chorizo omelette which also comes with hash brown and toast. Luckily there was more than enough toast to go around so I was happy. My poached eggs were perfectly runny, just the way I liked 'em. Hubby's chorizo omelette wasn't bad either, but I was not in the mood for omelette. The young man ate the most! He polished off his entire breakfast plus ate 1/2 of my sausage, 1/2 a pancake as well plus 1/2 a slice of toast. Our total with 3 drinks was a little under $24 before tip. Pretty good deal and it hit the spot. It's nothing fancy, but for your regular breakfast with no frills, ya can't beat Spires. read more

Started out Sunday to take my father in law to breakfast. It was about a twenty mile drive to Tustin. I stopped at the donut shop near my house for a cup of coffee to dink on the way. we picked up my father in law and proceeded to Spires. I was surprised to only see 5-6 tables occupied at 8:30 on a Sunday morning. After being seated by the hostess we were approached by a gentleman who took our drink order. i personally ordered coffee to drink as well as the others in our party. while waiting for out coffee an obese woman between 18-20 years old approached me and said I couldn't have my outside coffee in the restaurant. I explained to her I wasn't trying to not pay for a drink and had ordered coffee from our waiter. She said it didn't matter and had to dispose of the outside cup. We got up, walked out and went to Mimi's down the street. Not very good customer service considering the restaurant was basically empty. My wife and I have been regular customers at Salt & Pepper in Fullerton for over 30 years. I bring my outside coffee almost every time we go to there for breakfast. I used to go to Spires on Newport avenue all the time . Today a friend and I went and ordered a simple lunch. The place was empty and it took forever to be helped. I ordered the soup, sandwich, and salad. The price is now $13.99. It used to be $6.99. Eventually the soup arrived. Nothing more was served. We waited 15 minutes and the waitress and manager were nowhere to be seen. After 20 minutes the cashier finally went behind the cash register and I asked him where the food was. He looked and apparently the order was never placed. I told him I had an appointment and had to leave. He told me the soup would be $6.99! What an outrage and ripoff. I have been going to this location for more years than I care to remember and they have never failed to please. Last night I had Liver and Onions. Rarely do I find a chef that can cook it to my satisfaction, but last night for dinner it was perfect. With the meal comes soup AND salad, your choice of potatoes as well as bread, and of course a large portion of liver and onions. This is all topped off with a dessert of your choice. All for $7.49. And incase I failed to mention, their portions are huge. As for the service there is nothing bad to say. Your order is taken, substitution requests are always honored with a smile. And for the part I like most, it seems like when I am out to eat servers always seem to ask how things are right when you have a mouth full of food. Not here. Instead they will walk by the table allowing you to request anything should you want to. If I had anything negative to say about the restaurant, it would be to get rid of the claw machine located by the entrance. It's obvious that the claws are adjusted too loose and even though the claw completely wraps around the toy, will slide off. Chicken Gumbo Soup (big bowl) Top Sirloin Steak w/ Baked Potato & Veggies (*Sunday Special*) Garlic Bread French Toast Breakfast Combo Spumoni Ice Cream ....$16.14 The Chicken Gumbo was creamy and similar to clam chowder. Lots of chicken and large enough for two people to split. The Top Sirloin Steak was juicy and had to be about 12 ounces - NICE! Didn't have any of the French Toast Breakfast, but Dawn M. said it was "fluffy and delicious." The veggies and garlic bread were alright. The Spumoni was tasty. Service was great. The soup came out within seconds and the rest of the meal followed within 10 minutes. Our waitress was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed.
