It's usually the same every year, plus the additions of the newest trending shows or movies costumes. I like how they have a little "haunted house" zone in the center of the store to check out the jump scare animatronics. It's a nice set up. This is the ultimate Pop-Up store concept ever. Spirit rents out hollowed out store fronts in late summer, then fills it with the 2nd most popular seasonal merchandise after Christmas... Halloween. Yes, Americans spend the 2nd most on a holiday (Christmas is #1), on Halloween. This store is pretty massive, as it is an old Sports Chalet location next to Pet Club and near Black Bear Diner. But you can find these Spirit stores all over, in any major suburb, where kids still find it safe? to Trick or Treat. But this store (and Halloween) is not just for kids. In fact, if you don't count candy, Halloween is probably bigger for adults than kids. With today's Social Media/Anime/Cosplay/Rave culture, Halloween is another excuse for women to try out a sexy costume in public and get some long needed attention and for Mild men to get their Macho ego out there, before going back to their Honey Do lists for Wifey or their GF. You can find a vast array of costumes here, some ready to go all in one, to pieces you can mix and match, scores of masks, accessories (colored wigs, weapons, animal ears, etc) , and some big yard decorations. Spooky clowns, evil little dolls, Hockey masks, Faux Chainsaws, basically any scary movie concept. There is a little bit of Dia de Los Muertos (All Saints Day, aka Day of the Dead) things here, popular in Spanish and Latin countries/cultures, but not much. It's more American Halloween oriented. You can find some masks that might fit other masquerade events too, or just something to add to your next EDM/Rave/Festival event costume. I am thinking this might be a good place to come Nov 1 or 2, because there has to be some good bargains then, because this is a Pop-Up store with a limited life, till next year. You can find your every year costumes here - cowboys, pirates, random food, etc. I felt like they were lacking variety and my husband felt like there were more costumes for woman than men. Prices are also ridiculously expensive. They were selling a Naruto costume for $50-$60 when the exact same one was on Amazon for $40-$50. So just do your research before buying! read more

It's amazing to see how many bad reviews there are for this location because for this season of 2019, we have now made multiple visits to purchase everything from- Jacket Vest Other costumes Make up Wig Decor T-Shirts Props Each staff member, including register, on the floor, and the manager (female) have all been very attentive and professional. Like most Spirit Stores, they are open only during the Halloween season and make use of vacant stores that previously closed down or went out of business. This one found a nice store location where there are plenty of visiting shoppers and parking spaces available. Hence, it is easily accessible and accommodating to the large crowds of people who are desperately in need of a costume. This store is pretty well laid out by themes and types of costumes via departmentalizing with traditional, scary, cute, weird, sexy, movie or TV based shows for both children and adults complete with masks, make up, wigs, jewelry, and matching accessories. There is a nice and extensive selection of party decorations all the way up to elaborately scary electronically run movable props for the serious Halloween devotee. I had a few ideas of what I wanted to wear but unsure of what would be on hand, since Joe K and I were last minute shoppers. Surprisingly, I was able to find a less skimpy and more old age appropriate outfit that I could wear at work. The costumes were comfortable despite the utilization of somewhat cheap materials. But since they are just costumes and the prices aren't bad, I can't complain too much! There were a lot of fun and unique costume ideas there, unfortunately they didn't have my size at the time. But now I can plan a year in advance and hope to find them again for a future Halloween party. One can never have too many Halloween costumes in your wardrobe! LOL! read more

I visited this location yesterday and what occurred is absolutely unacceptable. I went up to the register and was greeted by a friendly cashier (cashier 320) who rang the item into the system and requested payment. I presented my *signed* VISA card for the transaction. The cashier took my VISA card and then requested my photo ID. I politely declined to show my ID, and explained to the cashier that my VISA card was signed and that, as such, I had the right to decline to show my ID with my VISA card. I explained that requiring ID was a violation of VISA's merchant card acceptance policy and that no merchant can require ID as a condition of card acceptance. The cashier stared at me blankly, then.... ... flustered, the cashier called the manager over. The manager, Marissa, approached the register and attempted to 'educate' me about their policy of requiring photo identification with all VISA card purchases. What Marissa did not know is that my career includes decades in merchant-card services within the financial industry. I know for a fact that retailers CAN NOT require photo identification as a requirement of accepting my VISA card (merchants can ask, but consumers have a right to decline). This rule is for protection of sensitive consumer data on the ID. (look it up, people... don't ever show your ID because the info on the ID + credit card info is a tidy package of info that thieves love to have combined together when they skim and steal). I tried to explain this to the "manager" Marissa, but she became increasingly argumentative with me and raised her voice over mine which was super unprofessional. She was shaking her finger at me, moving her head around. It was comical... Marissa acted as though she wanted to fight me right there in the store! She was acting like a 10th grade girl would act in the mall trying to fight it out! It was really unbelievable. I'm a professional woman, not a street thug. Marissa needs to learn that the conduct of retail management operations isn't the same as street life conduct... we are in a retail establishment and there are RULES in place to protect consumers. The funny part is, all of these antics and Marissa didn't even know what she was talking about! I snapped a photo of Marissa, you can see her trying to take off her big hoop ear rings like she wanted to fight me. This freaking dolt should not in retail management if she doesn't understand professionalism and customer service. She should go back to working at Dollar Tree, Goodwill, or wherever it is that she came from, because she clearly cannot handle the conduct required to be a manager where regular people shop. So, back to store policies of requiring ID with credit cards: Let me remind Spirit Halloween that no merchant can implement a store policy that supersedes VISA or MasterCard's merchant card acceptance rules. These card acceptance rules are in place to protect the personal information of consumers, and consumers CANNOT be forced to hand over their ID in order to use their credit card. Let me say it again --- Spirit Halloween CAN NOT require photo ID when customers present a signed VISA card! Putting such ID requirement practices in place can result in loss of card acceptance privileges of VISA/MasterCard, so I HIGHLY recommend that Spirit Halloween re-train their staff (especially Marissa in Elk Grove) on the card acceptance rules. Not sure if the training is different or if they just got lucky with a good staff this year but the experience I had today was completely different from past reviews. As soon as I walked in not only was I greeted by one employee but two! I was asked right away if I needed help finding anything. After being pointed into the direction of my item I did some walking around and I must say the store was very clean and organized. It's what you would expect from these kind of Halloween themed store. Several options from slutty to child friendly. Staff seemed to be nowhere in site at checkout for awhile with a line forming but the lady at the fitting room was amazing and helpful. I was looking for a particular look, decided to leave and wait to come back with the husband to try and accomplish what we would like to do on a budget. The place all and all was very clean, most of the mechanics stuff was available to try and worked. Some jumped up at you, others just shook around lol Always a fun time, but I want to check out what the others ones have available and offer as well as price differences the prices here seemed reasonable though so no complaints there. read more

9/6/2019: Spirit of Halloween is selling bad merchandise. My wife Deanna Jaxine Stinson went to this store this morning to get a new deck of Spirit tarot cards, because the deck that she bought for $8.00 had double cards, or missing cards. They traded us with a new deck and when we opened up the deck there were even more cards missing and more double cards. When we called the corporate office, they acted like they didn't care and said that all of their decks had missing cards. They are selling bad merchandise. This store is hell. I worked there last year and while working, I heard and was told of multiple comments that I found really rude and / or annoying. One included, when I started, a staff member asking the manager for plastic bags and being told "Why? So you can put yourself in it and take out the trash? People were generally nice to me, however, on the last day of retail work (work continued on at the warehouse), two of the staff became extremely weird to me and when another staff member showed up - the manager literally jumped and kicked in a way that would have hit the other staff member if he had been closer. I left immediately after that. I've witnessed racism, sexism, and all sorts of other bad behavior but this was honestly the strangest behavior I ever saw from human beings and it was freaky. I have seen that staff member a few times and each time, he can't stop talking about it. I think that working there may have traumatized him. He says he should have called the police, that the people were "scary," and that they talked bad nonsense about me. He worked a full few weeks there in their warehouse after I quit. It's been over six months and he's still talking about it. Some of the reviews on here illustrate something very similar for customers. This store either brings the worst out in people or brings out the worst people. Don't shop or work here. read more

Because of the size, they have lots of inventory that I haven't seen at other Spirit stores. When I needed assistance, Ashley was of great service! My co workers and I went to this Halloween store for our works haunted house, when we walked in we were greeted by the sweetest most helpful man named Ruben, he helped us right away with what we needed and gave us all the information of what was left and which items there was only one of. We continued to shop around and wanted to know some more information so we went to the manager named shayvone, she was beyond rude and made it seem like such an inconvenience for us to be asking her questions. Our mini hanging flame light only worked for three nights! We only ran it for about five hours each night. It has a limit of eight hours of consecutive use, we were within that limit. They didn't take any returns after the 28th. We found out that our flame light burned out on the 30th. Why not stand by your products and plug it in and find out it doesn't work anymore? Why not give the customers money back if their product is defective, and cheaply made at that? I thought that I would try their website after calling the number which had a message that said there was a live chat button at the top of their website. There is no live chat button. So I then found a link that said I could leave a message. The link led to a page where there was no way to leave a message. So they lie, cheat people out of money, and don't stand by their products. Cashier is a moron. This young man with the piercing and makeup on did not want to help me even though I waited in line. Either he was oblivious that I had went through line or he just didn't give a shit what I had to say. He was rude and told me to get in line. When I told him I had already waited in line all he said was, "you have to wait in line." I told him again that I had already waited in line. He refuse to listen. So I hop in the front of the line, because I wasn't about to wait again. He said, "The line starts back there. I rose my voice and said, "I was ignored by the other cashier and I have already waited in line, I'm not waiting again." There were about 20 of us that approached the doors at 9pm on Friday only to be told they were closed, and as we were leaving more people were still arriving and trying to go in.
