Normally a place that says "medium" means "This is mild but we put a couple pepper flakes in for show." Spoon, however, is not your average Thai restaurant. Mild certainly meant mild, but the next step up - medium, of course - was a blazing inferno of peppers and chilis. Thankfully, the server was kind enough to add some coconut milk to my food, but not before everything in my body started to burn. Seriously, my medium spiced food was hotter than the Thai Hot others got. I love flavor and spices can add flavor, but when it's spice for the sake of being hot, I get turned off. The meal itself wasn't too bad, but I was so grateful Ryan R decided to get a mild dish and was willing to take over feasting duties on my selection. It's only too bad that the spice began a warfare on his body that involved his new best friend, the porcelain god. Of course, I can't quite fault the level of spice on the restaurant, and the flavors I could taste between the searing pain were delicious. The mild dish from my boyfriend was the true winner of the night, allowing all the incredible flavors to work together with a hint of heat that left the mouth watering for more, not watering for the sake of trying to not catch on fire. Someone ordered a fish dish; I think I'll get that next time. No red on it. Looked safe... Prices aren't too bad, but my dish already came with veggies, or so I thought. Menu said it was a mix of veggies in the "medium" spice broth... but the server told me I needed to add something to my dish. Her suggestion? Vegetables. I thought it was weird considering it already CAME with vegetables, but I got suckered into saying I'd tack on $2 fr veggies I should have gotten for free. I know better next time to not let the server stare me down in an attempt to make me cave and add it in unless it's needed, plus I can't consume that much food anyway. I would like to try it again and hope for a bit different experience. It wasn't a bad experience, but I came with high expectations and had them shot down to ground level. A second chance is warranted, though, and I think I'll go with tried and true pad thai or the fish. At least the Thai Iced Tea was delicious? They also did a good job seating our large group and didn't mind that people came in randomly, even adding on a table for us when we suddenly needed one mid-dinner. I already loved Spoon, because its sister restaurant is across the street from where I used to go for grad school. Sadly, I stopped going because I don't really go into downtown often. Then, I moved to East Atlanta and it was like a revelation all over again. The past two times I've gone, it's been on a Tuesday night where they have half-price bottles of wine (all those under $50 - they are not cutting the price on the super expensive champagne they have). Now, I always knew Spoon had excellent cocktails. Sometimes, the only thing that got me through my classes was thinking about a Spoon martini. But their wine is really excellent too! Yes, this isn't authentic Thai food, but it is absolutely excellent for what it is. Just about every appetizer is mouth watering. I can't speak too much for their entrees, because I am completely addicted to their pad see ewe, but I do remember having the cashew curry once and it being really good as well. And on top of it, their desserts are awesome too! Granted, this location is next to Morelli's, and Morelli's is so incredible it's hard to resist. Nonetheless, just an FYI. If you're more of a cocktail person than a wine person, apparently their cocktails are just $5 on Wednesdays. And trust me, their cocktails are worth it. read more

We had a groupon for spoon so we thought we'd check it out on a Tuesday night. It was more less dead when we got there around 8 (it got a little busier later). We were seated outside and awaited our server. She was a total pro, very freidnly and helpful when it came to ordering the right dish. Vegans beware, the curries have fish oil (or something fishy). Anyway, for drinks we had wine and a coconut mojito. Both were pretty good. Unfortunately the mojito wasn't really cocoanuty Appetizer wise, we had spring rolls. Small portion, but really tasty. The sauce is a bit spicy. For the main course I had the basil vegetables (4 star hot). The dish was very watery which made me question it first. However, upon tasting it, I was happily surprised. Despite having it 4 star hot, it was more of an American-Thai hot. There were some vegetables, and a crap ton of tofu. Overall, the meal was quite good. The whole course for two was quite expensive given the portions. If we did not have the groupon we would have been unhappy with the prices. So be warred, its good foodin' at a high price. read more

Great Thai food can now be had in East Atlanta. I've been to Spoon Eastside twice now- on opening night and again on a Monday night. Both times we had excellent food delivered with excellent service. I'm a fan of the coconut soup, panang curry, and the pad see iew. Haven't tried the pad thai yet, but I'm sure it's just as good as the other dishes I've had. That being said, there are two items that I didn't care for- the basil roll (way too much wrapper) and the fried plantains (OK, but not like dad's or Ma Li's in the Highlands). Five stars for great food, great service, and being so close to the homestead. read more

Ok, where to begin with Spoon... First off, they are the closest restaurant to us, walking distance even, which is awesome, and also means we go there A LOT, and because we have been there a lot I am able to make all the observations I am about to make. I will pre-defend my upcoming criticisms by stating that we have eaten at many, many, many Thai restaurants al over the US, Europe and Asia and it is our absolute favorite cuisine. That said, Spoon is by no means the best, but it is very good! Specifically their Panang Curry, Massaman Curry, Pad See Ew and Coconut Soup (Tom Kha Gai, which is the actual name but if you say this the waiter will stare at you blankly) those tend to be our go-tos here. They have a great selection of drinks and their bar is very popular with the locals even on weeknights. It is easy to get a table here and is rarely a wait, which is also a plus. The employees are generally friendly but sometimes we do get a waiter or two that seems a little flustered or confused despite having worked there a while. Now for the cons. The price. This is one of the priciest Thai restaurants in town and I do not feel it is justified in any way because it is not fantastic and their portions are the smallest I have seen. We never have leftovers, I can easily eat a whole dish which I absolutely never do with Thai. Not only is is pricey, but their prices actually went up. Before you were able to order a Pad Thai for example for $10, which would get you a basic noodle dish without the addition of any protein. Now you have to add a protein which bumps it up to $12-17 depending on the protein you add. Which brings me to one of their proteins specifically: their chicken. I'm not sure how they prepare the chicken but it is possible the toughest, overcooked, most flavorless chicken ever. I usually pick it out on nights where it is particularly bad, but it is pretty consistent. I used to be able to order my noodle dishes without a protein after discovering this fact, alas I now always order the chicken because I am forced to and it's the cheapest one. OH! Their sides of rice are like 8oz at best (I know because I weigh my food, some of us foodies do diet on occasion!) When you get takeout, only 1/3 of the container is filled and it is the same portion when dining in. When getting takeout I will either make a pot of rice of my own or go to the Chinese takeout down the street for a proper box of rice at the same price. Anyway, do not let the chicken or the portion sizes deter you from trying Spoon, like I said, it is a great place with ample space, good service and decent food, and in a city with limited good Thai options, you don't have much to lose anyway! read more

My husband and I were thrilled to try this Thai place close to where we are staying. I have never experienced ruder service for a take out order and I would like to point out that we order take out very frequently. We walked in, weren't greeted after waiting several minutes. Instead of awkwardly standing in the doorway since I could see all of the hosts were busy, we walked to the bar area and asked the male bartender if we could put in a take out order. He said yes, we sat down at the bar, and we were immediately talked down to regarding the heat levels (mild, medium, etc.) and the add-ons to our Pad Thai. If you have been to a Thai restaurant, you know that the heat levels vary upon the location. Based on our questions, one would think that we have not been to that location before, but I guess this man isn't very observant and didn't seem to want to waste his energy on us. The man taking our order made it seem as though we had to "add-on" a veggie to a noodle instead of receiving the Pad Thai plain and didn't tell us it cost $2 for added bell pepper even though we wanted just the noodle. Every other person who was sitting at the bar area was greeted immediately as they sat down (heck even before they sat down), asked if they wanted something to drink (even if it was only water), and conversed with (with a smile) throughout their time sitting at the bar. We were there around 15-20 minutes to give reference. We were never asked if we wanted water while we waited for our food. We were ignored and talked about while we were sitting there listening him talk about me and my husband to another couple making note that we were on our phones while we quietly waited. We did nothing wrong to deserve this treatment. I have never felt so heated while waiting for a meal. We have never experienced this lack of respect when we did nothing to this man. I think his name is Napol S (this is the name on our receipt). Food was delicious (why I'm giving 2 starts instead of 1), but the lack of customer service was appalling and I do not take reviews lightly. I can tell this is a good restaurant because everyone else was working hard, one of the owners waved to us while we were waiting for our food, which was so nice, but this bartender does not show well to 1st time customers. I was not sure I liked idea of a "trendy" thai place...but the food was good. Not Good! (with an exclamation point). But Good. (with a period). I agree with the previous review about nickel and diming...I was also little perturbed that they did not have "the sauces" I usually ask for at Thai places. It's not that hard...a little chili sauce, a little fish sauce with peppers. But they did not have it. What? How are you a Thai restarant and not bring me the spicy sauces? They lost a star for this one. But that was okay, the food was pretty spicy enough without it, and I like really spicy food. The red curry was definately better than the green curry my friend ordered. The atmosphere was very nice. It was a good place for a quiet dinner where you want to have a conversation. It might be too quiet if you go when you are looking to see and be seen. Overall, Okay. If you are looking for a solid place to have dinner in the eastside, definately go. Nice little place here in EAV - next to Morelli's. I had the basil stir fry while Lynn had the soft shell crab. When the plates arrived, I was initially disappointed by the small portion size but quickly dismissed this when I tastes the food. Wow, very flavorful and just the right amount of spice for my tummy. For all the years I've been married to a wonderful Chinese woman you would have thought I'd have remembered not to eat too much rice, but the sauce was so good! The next hour was spent in agony with the rice expanding from all the water I drank but it was well worth it. There was also the launch of the Groupon that night and even though we didn't have one, the waiter still comp'd part of out meal. The waiter apologized a couple of times for not filling the water glasses timely but we were okay with the service. The only reason why i didn't give this 5 stars is due to the cocktail and dessert. The waiter strongly suggested the green tea ice cream and mousse which won a top 25 dessert in Atlanta but it was a miss for us. Maybe separately they are good but not together. The cocktail was okay but for $8 I expected more than overpowering vodka and a little flavor. Other than that, the meal was excellent. I'll definitely suggest this to my friends! read more

Spoon is Spectacular!!! It's hard to put into words the love I have for Spoon EAV. It is by far my wife and i's favorite place to eat in Atlanta, the first place we take guests, the first place we go when getting back in town, eat her once a week, ate spoon twice this weekend. I have had everything on the menu and eaten her going on 100 times and never had anything less than amazing food. We would eat here only for the food, but bonus is that some of the nicest people in Atlanta also own and work at Spoon. Spoon is a very special place. My wife's favorite is the Massaman and mine is the Panang. Coconut soup is AMAZING. Basil Rolls are awesome! Also try the Tuna when it's in season. read more

My date had the spicy seafood medley dish with white rice and ate and loved every bite. We also had the roti bread as an appetizer - it was good, not great. Not enough bread in my opinion but the dipping sauce had a peanuty flavor and I ate it with the rest of my meal it was so delicious. The prices for Thai food are very good. Most other places for that kind of food and atmosphere are much more expensive. A great find in ATL! read more

This Thai restaurant is close to home so I have eaten here several times. The food is almost always good, but I have had the rare one or two dishes there which were bland and uninspiring. They do the basics very well - panang and masaman curries are great, very good noodle dishes too. And they are very willing to make it as spicy as you like. To me this place is a neighborhood place (local artists on the walls) and knows how to not mess up a good thing. 4 stars for almost always great dinners. read more

I can only speak for the food as we ordered takeout on a Saturday night. Food was ready in the time frame quoted. I had the green curry with shrimp which had a good spicy kick to it. Perfect blend of heat but still enjoyable. Unfortunately it was incredibly soupy--I am used to more of a thicker curry. And it lacked a curry taste to it. There was heat, and coconut milk but very little curry flavor. I also had the coconut shrimp soup. All I can say about the soup is it tasted like Pine-sol. Over lemony taste to soup that was unnecessary and unpleasant. The boyfriend had a cashew chicken dish and, again, found the sauce to be extremely soupy. Nothing really to be excited about. I was disappointed. This place is so close to my apartment but will not suffice as my go to Thai restaurant. So the hunt continues. read more

Not good. Spring rolls were very greasy and only had a one ingredient and that was cabbage and nothing else. No seasoning, no flavor. Main course was Yellow Curry. It was watery and way overwhelmed by the fish sauce. I give it somewhere between a Meh and a yuk. Yum. I apologize in advance for going all Rachael Ray on y'all, but "yum" was the one word I kept repeating during, after, and wayyyy after my visit here. We started with two apps, the spring rolls, which were just average, and the calamari which was awesome. It had a great tempura batter that wasn't greasy at all and was perfectly fried so the squid had just enough chew left. For my entree, I went with the green curry with beef. It's marked as one of the spicier entrees, but it wasn't so hot that you couldn't taste the flavors of the curry, which was so good I used a spoon to eat ever last drop of the kick-y sauce. The variety of veggies was also appreciated, with eggplant, red and green peppers, zucchini, and bamboo shoots soaking up all the yumminess. At $13, the dish was a good value, and something I would order again. Service was on point, and the the people watching was great, from the almost swanky couples to the families with the most adorably bundled children. Sure, the food may lack some of the finesse of some of the pricier or more authentic Thai places around Atlanta, but it still is very tasty and a solid spot in EAV. I've never had a dish here that I didn't like, but I particularly love all of their curries (especially the Panang and Massaman) and the basil fried rice is to die for. I had a taste for Thai so decided to go with the closest Thai restaurant I found on Yelp...which happened to be Spoon Eastside. I looked up the menu online to order over the phone for pick-up. The employee I spoke with was quite nice, and I found the atmosphere of the restaurant to be enjoyable as well when I went in to pick up my food....Unfortunately,I don't know if it was what I ordered, but I was NOT blown away by meal--which was what I was hoping for. Excellent curry. My girlfriend had the panang, which is a sweeter, aromatic, medium spicy coconut milk curry, and was by far the best. I tried the kang pang (red coconut curry), an earthier spicey curry without the sweetness of the panang. It had shades of anise and ground root spices. I love Thai food and the Pad Thai I had here was good. Just good. It's pretty expensive for what it is. My Pad Thai with chicken was a small amount and $13. My partner had the Masaman Curry with chicken $14. I have pics the portions are small. He said his was very good but it was a very small portion. We are 150 lbs saying this. We both had specialty cocktails. They tased fine but both were really weak. $8 each. I also had a Chang beer $5. On top of this I had to go searching for silverware when we didn't have any and the server didn't come back and I had asked for the spice tray and had to walk inside to get it too. The lady who I believe is the owner did come out to ask how things were as I think the bartender told her I kept coming inside asking for things. Was a little late by then. The waitress apologized. I'm a big fan of the atmosphere of Spoon and their flavors are nice, but I wish they had a larger menu. Don't get me wrong...their current menu, as well as specials are good, but I feel the variety could be better. Pros - * Again...I'm a big fan of the flavor of their food and I feel everything is prepared well. My boyfriend also loved his soft shell crab entree. * Very friendly and attentive staff. * Nice size cocktails/beer list. Reasonably priced and I really enjoyed the mojito I ordered. Cons - * I went with the shrimp/crab special in brown sauce. It was $26 (which I thought was a tad high), but when it came to the table, even though the flavors were tasty, I only had 5 shrimp and a little bit of crab with a lot of sauce and noodles. * They don't offer hot sake, only cold. I know this isn't a big deal, but for me who loves hot sake...I was a bit bummed. Overall...I love thai and suggest you give Spoon a try if you do too. read more

Some great Thai food. I didn't find a cashew entree which is usually my go to but our server had recommend the Basil vegetable and it has become quite possibly my new favorite. The service I will say wasn't anything i can talk up about. Service was indeed very slow & we didn't see our server often if maybe three times in total. Once to order, second for a more than halfway through check and the third for the check. On top of that we had different servers pass our middle. Of the dining area table with water pitchers but our two empty glasses were never touched. We did notice a handful of servers sitting at a high top near the kitchen just chilling out, which is fine but not acceptable if during our experience we aren't being taken care of. My wife and I had dinner here a couple of nights ago mostly due to the fact that it was highly recommended by several friends. As we stood at the door reading the menu (and honestly debating on if it was worth it) 2 ladies entered and said it was their favorite restaurant and that we must have dinner there. So we did, and I wasn't impressed by any means. I'm not saying it was bad but for $15 a plate I know of a lot better places to go. My wife had the green curry which was border-line too spicy to eat (yeah I know, curry is supposed to be spicy, but all you could taste was the actual spice... you know what I'm saying?) I had the fried tilapia which was rather tasty. If I went back again, which I probably won't anytime soon, I would order it again. Kinda sticks out in the eclectic land of the eastsiders, it seems as tho it would fit in midtown. The decor is all wooden and such with clean lines kinda a cross between Scandinavian and Japanese....maybe that is Thai design...idk I never studied that! The Location This little plaza is like an oasis amongst the residential land. There are several cute boutiques and such in the plaza...its like a little taste of midtown tucked away on the eastside. The Food There is a simple menu...popular noodle and rice favs. For the not so average Thai diner you have the opption of Thai Hot you can request....so you get that kind of mind searing heat that burns so good! Its not the best Thai in the city, but it will do in a pinch. My guest had the Massuman Curry with Chicken. My Experience We did a quick Monday Lunch. I was excited because I'd heard people rave about spoon. When we got there, I learned that people I know were raving about the one downtown. I figured I wouldn't hold any bias...maybe it would be just as spectacular. It was good, not toungasmic but tasty. I won't twist my face if someone says that we are going there for dinner. Spoon Eastside is my go-to destination for delicious, authentic Thai food. I've been enjoying their food for over a decade and the quality has never wavered. The friendly people, comfortable environment, delicious cocktails, and of course the food have kept me loyal. They have lots of gluten free options, which I require, so peace of mind is also a win. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Spoon was one of the first restaurants where protocol was carefully considered and in place almost day one. They have kept up the safety and I feel at ease getting my take out. The three flavor stir fry with tofu is delicious! The pad Thai is solid, the to-go Negroni from the bar is the bomb. I had a Scoutmob for this place that was fairly soon to expire - so I visited recently with some girlfriends. Among the three of us we had scallops in a sauce (ok but not my favorite - the sauce was rather overpowering), dumplings (voted good by my friend), pad thai (yum!!), and a sweet and sour curry (can't remember the name - also delicious). The interior is very cute and trendy. And our waiter was awesome! Very attentive, nice, and gave us the scoutmob discount on the full bill even when we split it - bonus points! read more

This is my absolute favorite Thai cuisine spot in all of Atlanta. My 5 star rating is based off of food and service alone. I've had nearly everything on the menu and it's the only place I can boast so proudly about. The staff is super nice and friendly, rice or noodles it really doesn't matter it comes out steaming every time. The bar you've got to try the chai tea martini it's my favorite drink. read more

I loved the green curry - went with hot, not Thai hot and it was definitely spicy enough for me. The basil chicken was not my favorite, but still pretty tasty. Basil rolls were exactly what they were supposed to be - no surprises. This trip was compliments of Scoutmob, but I will be back regardless of the deal.
