    Sashimi salad
    Evelyn H.

First time trying this place out, despite having walked through the SOFA Market many times trying to decide on what to eat in this area. I was in the mood for something light and clean and decided I wanted fish. I also wanted more than just salad, so I needed to get 2 dishes, which I didn't think I'd kill, but I did. The sashimi salad was exactly what I was looking for in a meal this day, but I was worried about it not being enough to sustain me for dinner, so I decided to also order a roll. Nothing screamed at me from their roll menu, so I kind of randomly decided on the volcano roll. I ordered from a screen and found a seat in the back of the hall to wait for food. The food didn't take long to be ready. I only waited maybe about 5 or so minutes. Both items were fresh-looking and tasty. The sashimi was nice and fresh, salad greens were crisp - it was everything I expected and came through to satiate my need for fresh fish. The avocado was fresh and delicately placed - perfectly complemented the dish. The volcano roll was beautifully topped with eenie weenie scallops and drenched in sauces. Tasted fine, but I maybe didn't need it. I think I could have gone with a simpler roll to accompany my salad. As a meal in a food hall, it was a little pricier than I expected, but for what it ended up being, I think it was somewhat reasonable. I had zero experience with the people here since with the screen ordering and texting for food pickup, it was all self-serve, but that's fine, considering the food hall atmosphere. All in all, the food was fresh, the presentation was lovely, and if I was in the mood for fresh fish in this area, I'd eat here again.

I always seem to forget these little shops are over here!! It's kind of like a smaller version of San Pedro marketplace, but there's at least five little restaurants in this vignette. We were lucky to find this place open around 7:30 PM on a Sunday evening since everything else seemed to close early!! My friend and I were able to order on their iPad like kiosk and our order came out within five minutes!! The only reason why I'm giving four stars instead of five, was I was really expecting to get some sort of Boba or maybe a sake to go along with my dinner and perhaps it was too late in the day, but nothing else was open in this little cafeteria Lake vignette. Nevertheless, I highly enjoyed my rainbow roll and it was very fresh and had a delicious flavor!! I also love the chipotle, aïoli sauce. I could dip it in since I'm allergic to soy sauce as well as MSG. I will definitely be back again!!

I used to come here all the time during my time as a student at SJSU whenever I was craving sushi. I was just in the area for an event decided to stop here. This is a stand in a good hall that specializes in sushi dishes and Japanese food. Salmon Avocado bowl (5/5); Really recommended this if you want a meal with a few pieces of sushi. It also comes with tamago. Really enjoy this places and the upgrades they've made since my SJSU days

Pretty decent food court sushi! We came for something quick before catching a show. This hit the spot!

My friend and I came into Sofa Market looking for a bite to eat. I was in the mood for sushi, so I gravitated towards Umi Hand Roll Bar. I ordered the salmon belly carpaccio. I thought it was interesting and usual to market sushi (essentially a chirashi bowl) with an Italian term - but it certainly is unique. The salmon was fresh and paired well with the bountiful side ingredients, like avocado. The rice, however, was a bit underwhelming and stale. Overall, you get quite a bit of food for rock-bottom prices at Umi Hand Roll Bar. This is definitely a place I'd recommend if you're looking for cheap and quick sushi.

Great food, fast service, but I'm knocking off a star because their ordering kiosk at the restaurant charges you more than using door dash for in store pick up. I debated using Door Dash for a takeout order, but thought it would be cheaper to order at the restaurant. I was very surprised to find that was not the case. However, their food was great. Maybe the best tempura roll I've had. Hand rolls were large and delicious.

San Jose's food scene, especially Downtown, has overall been pretty disappointing for me. Working there, I've noticed there aren't many great options outside of company deliveries. That's what led me to try Umi Hand Roll in the SoFA Market--it's one of the only sushi or raw fish spots close by. I ordered the Sake Don, which came with six pieces of salmon, a lot of rice, half an avocado, some pickled radishes and carrots, and an option to add seaweed salad (which I personally skipped). Inside, there was plenty of seating, but the place had a bit of an unpleasant smell, which wasn't ideal. That said, the staff was really sweet, helpful, and made sure everyone felt well taken care of, which I appreciated. Portion-wise, it was on the smaller side, and the price felt a little high for what I got. With Downtown's lack of options, though, sometimes you just make do. Parking is also tough--it's mostly paid parking everywhere. I probably wouldn't come back unless I was really hungry, but it's nice to know it's there when you're in a pinch.

    Alaskan Rolls

Umi Hand Roll Bar is located in a semi-secluded area that in my opinion can get glossed over in favor of some of the better known places in the Downtown Area, but I'm glad to have discovered it unintentionally while deciding to check out a new drink place my sister had told me about. You order through one of two kiosks, then wait for a text message for your order. Since I was with a friend, we decided to get California Rolls alongside a salmon and tuna hand roll, since we assumed that this was their speciality. I had also gotten a strawberry cake to share with my friend, but they had apparently ran out so I had to get a mango cheesecake instead (the kiosk said that they had it for some reason, but I suppose they hadn't updated it yet). My friend was also feeling hungry afterwards, so we decided to add Alaskan Rolls to it. The Salmon and Tuna rolls were alright. Both of them come with instructions of how to unwrap it, which was pretty helpful for someone who hadn't had a hand roll before. I also enjoyed the savory flavor of the California and Alaskan rolls, with the Alaskan roll having a more subtle flavor compared to the California. The mango cheesecake surpassed my expectations. I could see bits of mango inside, and my mom, who has a strong distaste for artificial flavors, said that it tasted like natural mango. Unfortunately I don't have a photo, and the mango cheesecake was a little small. I'm not sure if this is a place that I would return to, as there were a lot of unique places in that same area that I normally don't try and I think it'll be better to get to one of those first. But overall, it was a pleasant experience.

Not recommended at all Not authentic and nasty food.... Not fresh and not tasty I order sea urchins and end up getting this, they should update the menu

Good hand rolls but the plastic kinda kills it because ya girl was struggling getting it off. I lowkey wished the plastic was edible, that would've been fun. Flavor wise everything was great, the salmon was very fresh, the tempura - my daughter loved, the tomago was delicious as well. Overall everything was good, I would definitely order from here again.

Alright, I get it. There's a big event nearby and doesn't help that it's one rampant with weebs, that would definitely make this place super busy and fisted. With that in mind, I made sure to put in my mobile pick up order way in advanced, took my leisurely time walking over there, then used that time to scope out the rest of the market, before returning back to Umi Hand Roll bar to pick up my order. I delayed it so that I would be over my estimated wait time, thinking that my order would be ready. Unfortunately it wasn't and when I asked, how long it would take, I was told 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, I asked again and was told 10 minutes, AGAIN. At that point I just stopped asking and waited for my order, which took another 15 - 20 minutes. Overall this order took almost an hour after the initial wait time and it was a tad frustrating to see others who obviously got there after me in person order off the kiosk, much more complicated, bigger orders get their food before me. But I digress moving forward to the actual review. I got the: 1) Santa Barbara Uni, Salmon Belly, and Ikura Don: -I guess it makes sense that this takes a bit longer only since it's not a roll and a bit more of a "special" menu item. But it's honestly just a rice bowl with those proteins on top. -An alright amount of uni and decent amount of salmon belly and ikura. Tastes nice and fresh. Not a huge portion but not super small either. -Rice was a bit harder and dryer than I would have liked but I guess it was just scooped from the bottom of the cooker. 2) Green Tea Cheesecake: -This was already boxed and in their fridge. Just saw them pull it out and package it for me, so it's definitely something that you yourself can get from a market. -It's not bad though, not too sweet and strong matcha flavor. My order also came with a side of miso soup and I ordered a bottle of green tea as well. My big L for thinking that mobile ordering ahead of time would save me some of the wait, but nah. The fact that this cost almost more than $40 sucked for me, but it is what is. Don't think I'll be back any time soon or even for Fanime.

    Crunchy roll / California Roll

Located in sofa market on the left hand side immediately when you walk in. This place sounded good but I was hesitant to try it. Upon better judgement I ended up ordering a crunchy roll and California rolls to try. Unfortunately the crunchy roll tasted fishy and not like shrimp at all. I ended up only finishing the California roll which tasted fine.

Don't get the rolls to go. They put them in this plastic wrap that's near impossible to get off with any grace. The rolls just fell apart.

Spotting a delicious-looking sashimi plate at the next seat made me eager to try their sushi. The menu featured a wide variety of dishes, including sushi rolls, soups, and specialty plates. Still, I found myself not fully in the mood, likely because I was disappointed about Flaming Ox. I ordered a dragon roll and, craving California rolls, decided to get two. My daughter chose the chicken teriyaki plate and really enjoyed it. The sushi was so fresh that I saved my extra California rolls for lunch the next day. I'd definitely return to try more of their beautiful rolls or sashimi plates. Service was decent overall. We waited a bit to place our order, but the food arrived promptly. There was a moment when our server took a while to return, and I grew so thirsty I almost went searching for him myself. Fortunately, another server noticed and quickly brought me water. I'm glad I discovered this restaurant in the same shopping strip as Flaming Ox. It was odd that one side of the strip lost power while the other remained unaffected.

For the price, it felt like a great value and was a very filling meal. I also ordered deep-fried oysters. They were tasty and cooked well although no dipping sauce was provided so I ended up just using soy sauce instead. One thing I noticed is that the value doesn't seem to carry over to delivery. When I looked at DoorDash, the bento box listed there didn't include the potstickers or California rolls. Ordering directly through the restaurant's website to get the full meal added about $12 in extra fees which made it much less appealing. Overall, the food was good and the in-person pricing felt reasonable. I'd happily dine here again but if you're considering delivery, be aware that you'll pay significantly more and may not get the same meal options.

Unfortunately, the sashimi was by far the worst I've ever been served at a restaurant. The fish appeared discolored, old, and slimy. When we asked our server what types of fish were included, we were told tori, salmon, albacore, yet the almost every piece (minus the salmon) had a brownish-gray appearance that was extremely unappetizing. I'm not sure if we happened to receive the last of their inventory for the week, but serving fish in that condition at full price ($60) is kind of crazy. Some of the sashimi looked comparable to raw pork that had been sitting out, which was honestly concerning. The sushi rolls were also disappointing. They were very average, with flavors and quality that reminded me of grocery store sushi. Nothing stood out or justified the price point. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. I was especially let down because this restaurant came highly recommended by a family member who has dined here multiple times and always had positive experiences. To make matters worse, I developed stomach discomfort within about 15 minutes of leaving the restaurant. I had been looking forward to trying this place, but unfortunately, my experience fell far short of expectations.
