HUGE bummer. Really nice new space. Q's really needed this. While presentation was solid, every single dish we ordered was not good. Not terrible, but for the price and based on the reviews (tourist maybe?), not even close. Grilled Endive Salad - Barely "grilled" and bland. Weird for endive. Just weak. Fried Oysters - Fine. The aioli was actually the best thing by FAR "Chorizo" Mussels - The overly dramatic server emphasized spiciness and being one of his favorite things. Probably most bland and tasteless broth in a mussel dish I have ever had. Boo. House-made Bolognese - Just bad. Pastey and gloppy cloyingly rich. Decent flavors but barely. Just a gigantic fail. Felt like a dish with three chefs trying too hard to make something "more" than it needed to be. Double Boo. Server - Botched our tab then after trying to argue the point until he saw that literally two things we never received were charged, just walked away and came back with feigned nicety...not even so much as a modest "sorry about that extra $30 I put on your tab." Great customer service. The waitress knew the menu and had great recommendations. It was a little pricey but it was the last night of our honeymoon so we didn't care. The food was probably some of the best we have eaten while in boulder. They just released a new menu yesterday and it is worth checking out. I had the bison burger (seriously the best burger i have had in my life) with aioli fries and a side of brussel sprouts (to die for). My husband had the pork tomahawk with a side of aioli fries. I've rarely said a dining experience was perfect, with the exception of a restaurant in the Cayman Islands; in Boulder, never. This was perfect, at least this time, so my review is subject to change when we go back. We'll be back. It was just rock solid, classy service, sophisticated, and very professional. We couldn't have been happier. Keep the water flowing please. I last ate here when it was called Q's, or something. I was reluctant to return, but damn, why didn't I give it a chance sooner? Kudos to the person who turned this restaurant around. I now have a new favorite place in Boulder; a very small list of about 5 restaurants. I loved that it wasn't trying to be pretentious, or cool. Here, everything was on point. Most of the time I have no clue if my reservation will be met, or the table ready to go. My reservation was secure, the table preference exceeded expectations, and the service beyond extraordinary. The food was absolutely delicious. Personally, I had the Rocky Mountain Trout with rice and veggies, delicious. I loved that the menu wasn't overly complicated, offering a range of choices that didn't veer off into the esoteric. Loads of restaurants try way too hard to create strange new choices. Call me old fashioned, but I'm delighted if someone can manage to make great food excellent without overcomplicating it. They did it. This was elegant, graceful, and wonderful all around. I'll be back; my wife and I are planning a date night knowing that we can relax here. One thing that I've complained about in Boulder is the use of cell phones in restaurants. We were seated in a private booth and I did not see, hear, or experience the annoyance of someone on their phone, or being pinged continuously with texts. One of the reasons we no longer go out to eat is because people are sharing/watching videos, talking on their phones, failing to mute the sound for text or vibrate, which is very distracting and makes me feel like I'm in an office. I want to relax when eating, thank you for providing the space to do so. More restaurants need statements on the menu asking folks to silence their phones, or to put them on airplane mode/restaurant mode. Thank you so much. My wife and I are excited to eat here often. I'll definitely have more business dinners here too. I'm so grateful for the quiet space, lack of cell phone use, and the peace, solitude and tranquility that we experienced. You'll nail the restaurant market here if you can keep people off of their cell phones in the restaurant. As management probably knows, 1/3rd of US adults are eating out less frequently. In 2016 alone there was zero growth in the industry. I'm not sure about 2017. Apart from cost, customers are exhausted by cell phone/device use in restaurants. It's extremely difficult to find a place where you can actually relax, go slow, eat well, converse and connect intimately. Thank you for making it possible. Given this was our 1st time back since the restaurant changed, we hope our experience will be consistent. We were delighted to finally go to a place that didn't feel like we were still at the office; phones ringing, texts dinging, people speaking on phones loudly without consideration. The trend of cell phone use in every facet of existence, quite frankly, is horrid from our point of view. It seems that others forget that the world has other people in it. As a result, my wife and I have stopped eating out, probably contributing to the statistics above. We've literally reduced our dining out experience by 60% as cell phone use in restaurants has ramped up. Now that we know there is a tranquil place in Boulder, you'll have our business nearly every time we decide to go out to eat if you can keep the space protected from people on devices. Sometimes a quiet and connected conversation over a great dining experience is the anecdote to a hectic, noisy life. Sadly, most restaurants don't offer the respite from the chaos any longer; the chaos is now in the restaurants. If any restaurant wants to corner the market, silence the phones and the devices. Protect the respite as you did for us and we'll spend $$ and be forever grateful. read more

Delicious food with fresh and locally-focused ingredients. We tried the PEI mussels, which were perfectly steamed and tasty with a zing of red pepper flakes and capers in a savory broth. I am not a huge fan of Brussels spouts but their Caramelized Brussels Sprouts (with sweet soy chili sauce) was fantastic! For our entrees we ordered the ribeye and duck breast. The ribeye came with Gorgonzola au gratin potatoes --- so tasty! A great place for a nice meal in a newly renovated historic building in Boulder. I scheduled a work event and coordinated it with Jessica whom was fantastic to work with. I was able to do a custom menu so that the food would come out at the same time. Venue: Inside the Boulderado Hotel on the corner which makes it easy to access. Everything was really clean and there was plenty of room for our group. They had a nice separate area for our group which was accommodating since we were a group of 30. We closed down the restaurant and it was nice to not get pushed out, they welcomed our company! Service: We had a custom menu and the food served was delicious. We had a three course menu and everything came out in a timely manner. Drinks were plentiful and a good selection. Overall: I highly recommend spruce for the food and the awesome service. I would like to go again without the large group so I can try more of their food! read more

We had a lovely time last night at Spruce Farm and Fish. We got their during happy hour and enjoyed the calamari and roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts--the roasted veggies were so good with the balsamic glaze. The spinach salad and scallops that followed were also delicious. The service was friendly and attentive. They gifted us with a yummy creme brûlée for our anniversary. This review is a combination of 2 trips there. The first time I came in for happy hour where they had a relatively cheap crispy brussels sprouts dish as well as an affordable prime rib plate. Unfortunately, the prime rib was cold, but because the waitress forgot to check on my food, she immediately brought out a manager who comped the entire meal. Not bad at all. I returned to try their full dinner menu, and I ended up ordering their expensive ribeye steak with a rosemary demiglace and crispy onions (and choice of 2 sides-- beets and asparagus). The steak was perhaps the best steak I've ever had. It melted in my mouth and lacked for nothing. The asparagus was great, although the beets mostly tasted like the vinaigrette it was cooked in. I thought with a 12oz. steak I would have plenty left to take home, but I barely stopped myself from finishing it. The waiter this time was excellent and charming (Lindsey). I don't know about this place. Nice ambiance, I thought the staff was nice, but I wasn't impressed by the food options and the menu in general. I tried the fries with all the delicious sauces, which were definitely A-OK as well as the clam chowder. I love a good bowl of clam chowda and this delivered. The wheels fell off with the Marine pasta. Maybe it was the wrong thing to pick, but I pictured it being much more saucy and creamy and the lobster was pretty dry and the noodles seemed under-dressed... if that's a thing for noodles. I like pretty rich sauces and this failed to deliver. I want to like this place, for I love the Boulderado, but nothing really resonated with me on the menu. I'd probably give it another try if a group of people were going... I mean who am I to boss other people's food decisions? read more

Had lunch today (7/19/18) at Spruce and the hostess was absolutely horrible. From the moment we entered she had a sour attitude. We asked for a specific table. She didn't like that. She failed to notify our server so we waited over 10 minutes for water or for anyone to acknowledge us. We had to ask for water. The hostess that day was very unpleasant the entire time. As a business owner I would have either fired her immediately or placed her in attitude training with an emphasis in customer service. Boulder eating establishments have received a very poor reputation for terrible service and we experienced it today. The food was nothing special either. Won't recommend nor ever return. read more

Had dinner with my 2 daughters and each selected different entrees. Service was excellent as well as drinks. The menu is diverse with unique recipes. Each entree was excellent, well presented and tasty. The salmon with risotto was sublime. The setting in historic hotel Boulderado adds to the charm. I was staying right in the Hotel Boulderado, so this place was very convenient. Decorated warmly and comfortably, I ate breakfast twice here. The blueberry griddlecakes were just right, with butter, maple syrup, marmalade, and fresh blueberries. The oatmeal I ate the next day (with dried fruit) was fine but wasn't so special - it was unfortunately a bit dry and chewy. Back and forth on this one. I've been coming here since it was Q's. Since it's been Spruce, I've had some good and bad experiences. The bad ranges from either waiting way too long for someone to approach the table, food being underwhelming, being charged $7 for a latte (that was random & I'm still not sure how that happened), and asking for a side of arugula & receiving a giant bowl of it (that whole particular interaction was filled with miscommunication). As you can see Ive given this place many many chances. The coffee is really good (Boxcar, which I happen to think is the best of Boulder) and I have had several totally good experiences here as well. I've never once had to wait for a table (which... Considering it's a brunch place in Boulder that's not necessarily a good sign, but it's certainly convenient). ...It's just that it's not reliably good. read more

I ordered online and I received notification that it was ready for pickup. I even called to make sure it was ready and they said if you received the notification it's ready. Well, I got there and my order was not ready and was told I needed to wait 30 minutes which I did in their crowded restaurant. They never offered me even some water as I waited because of their error. I understand things get busy but at least treat your customers with some respect and offer them something for their time that they're waiting. read more

This restaurant is new in the Hotel Boulderado and I had a great experience there. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful and in my opinion, is on par with all the other fantastic restaurants in Boulder. I was with a couple other people and we enjoyed some great cocktails, wine, and our favorite meals were the: Fried Oysters French Onion Soup Filet Minon Brussel Sprouts - amazing Our waiters were very attentive and made for an all-around great evening. I hope this place gains some traction because it's super quality and the prices are in line with everything else in Boulder. As a self-proclaimed eggs Benedict lover, the crab eggs Benedict has to be one of the worst I've had. Hollandaise tasted off, crab was really of-putting, among other things. May 12, 2019 -This was the worst meal and the most inept service I've had in 20 years! The trout was fishy overcooked and tasteless. The Duck Quesadilla was filled with so much "stuff" that you couldn't taste the duck. The House Salad and dressing were good. Server didn't even bring a wine cooler for our bottle of white , we had to ask for it. We were told that we could "keep" our silverware after our appetizers. We asked for fresh silverware and almost every knife had either food or water spots, ugh! Very overpriced and poor quality. This restaurant used to be "Q" many years ago. Bring it back! P.S. I went here with a friend for a Sunday brunch and it was my first time dining here. We were seated in the raised area in the center of the restaurant, which left a little to be desired in terms of ambience. I would imagine that sitting out by the windows would have felt much more relaxing and less cramped. I had the crab and asparagus benedict and it was pretty damn tasty. They didn't scrimp on the hollandaise, which as a benedict-lover, I appreciated. However, I substituted the potatoes for "fresh berries and fruit" and the friut left a lot to be desired. I think I got two berries and then a bunch of cantaloupe and honey-dew. It is always frustrating when a restaurant under delivers on the quality and type of fruit. The last thing I will add, and it is not necessarily the restaurant's fault that this happened, but a homeless man wandered right up to our table and proceeded to try and touch some of my things. I attempted to stop this, but he was pretty intense. He then wandered off and came back talking to me incoherently. It was pretty uncomfortable. Considering the restaurant is within Hotel Boulderado, it seems that he must have gained entry first through the hotel, and then simply wandered into the restaurant. I know Boulder is pretty lenient when it comes to homeless people, but I think allowing them to wander into hotels/restaurants where they can end up touching people's private property is not really cool. Again, not necessarily the restaurant's fault, but it certainly was an off-putting experience. I would definitely try this place again, but I would want to try and sit somewhere with more ambience and I might ask more questions before selecting my order. read more

Great breakfast here . I had the blue crab Benedict with some sautéed greens and a fantastic Bloody Mary . Husband had the big omelet breakfast with the prime rib. Looked good but too many bell peppers. Service was great . Next time we stay in Colorado we will for sure have a meal here. read more

Decided to try this place for the first time couple of days ago. While the service was definitely nice and thoughtful, the food unfortunately was lacking. We ordered some oysters, beet salad special and burrata appetizer. While oysters were fresh, the appetizers lacked seasoning and flavor and we ended up asking for second basket of bread instead to fill ourselves up a bit, as we were starving. For mains we tried whole fish, lobster pasta, and salmon. All three again were disappointing and lacking in seasoning. The lobster dish had whole cloves of garlic just hidden around the pasta, which was very overpowering if you happened to miss one and put it in your mouth. The salmon's teriyaki like flavor overpowered everything else on the plate, and whole fish while tasty came with disappointing potatoes and coleslaw sides that we left untouched. We went to Spruce last night with some really good friends. We were hopeful about the food because we'd been to the Boulderado before and it was excellent. That was many years ago though, and although our server was good, the food was the worst I've ever had in any restaurant. Between the 4 of us we sent back 3 meals and that never has happened. My yellowfin tuna was rubbery, like it had been microwaved and was sitting in what looked and tasted like dishwater. My friend, who ordered the lamb received a white plate with brown, fatty looking items on it that he couldn't eat at all. My husband ate the salmon but said it was very salty. The manager was really nice about it and offered us free dessert which we gratefully accepted, but even the dessert wasn't very good. We will never come back to this restaurant. read more

After walking up and down the Pearl street mall, I almost felt guilty about selecting the restaurant in our hotel for dinner - I wondered if we were just being lazy. But dinner was great, and I don't have a single regret. Charming atmosphere, attentive but not oppressive service, and the food was delicious. I tried two of the specials - to start, a grilled palisade peach salad with arugula, pistachios and sugar snap peas and for dinner, grilled barramundi over orzo and cherry tomatoes, served with a corn purée and garnished with celery leaves and Italian parsley. The balance of flavors was complex, but light and elegant. Both were outstanding. I also sampled the roast chicken over fingerling potatoes, from the regular menu, and I wouldn't hesitate to order that one, either. I appreciated having options for happy hour wines and appetizers, including oysters, but didn't try them this time. Kids were happy with the cheese pizza, which had a thin flatbread-style crust and a surprisingly sophisticated sauce. Great deal at $5. If you do happen to be staying in the Hotel Boulderado, you can't go wrong just heading downstairs for dinner. read more

Has potential. We started with shrimps skewers and crab cakes. The shrimp skewers were beautifully presented and were delicious. The shrimps could have been a little bit bigger and were ever so slightly over cooked, nevertheless they were delicious. Don't let the crab cakes fool you, looks can be deceiving. They may look like your general run of the mill breaded, mostly filler crab cake but they were nearly all crab, perfectly cooked and excellent! We each had a half salad for our second course: house and Ceasar. Both were great. My wife had the special halibut and I had the scallops. Both dishes were very tasty how ever both were overcooked and over salted. I just moved here from New England so I know seafood. Even the mashed potato that came with the halibut was over seasoned. There were large chunks of sea salt in both dishes that probably didn't need very much salt to begin with. Don't get me wrong, they were flavorful and we cleaned the plates but they could've been taken out of the pan earlier and used less salt. I'll give this place another chance as I have high hopes for it. PS the cocktails were outstanding. I recommend the New Fashioned! read more

My husband and I can't get enough of Spruce. We've come a few times for happy hours and other date night dinners. Our last trip was for their New Years Eve dinner. It was a 5 course meal that started with a champagne toast; definitely did not disappoint they were really busy but we still received polite and attentive service. I was bummed the clam chowder wasn't a choice that night. Definitely a must try though for their usual menu; probably one of the best I have ever had! Another must try is the fried oysters! We aren't adventurous enough to try them raw but they do look great in the case! I've always had phenomenal seafood here NYE was no exception I ordered the Seabass and my husband got the local lamb. The dessert was excellent I got the baked Alaskan a special dessert for the night that's not on their standard menu. read more
