Came here with the boyfriend and the fam for lunch. It was my first time and I wasn't disappointed! My fish and chips were cooked well and my shrimp cocktail was nice and fresh. The only reason this isn't a 5-star review is because I prefer my battered fish to be less salty and not cooked quite so well done. Also, there was way too much cocktail sauce on the shrimp, it drowned them out a bit. Other than that, this is a great lunch option if you're in the area on a cold and breezy wonder weekday, but I have the feeling it would turn into a total madhouse on the weekends or during the summer. read more

Wow!!! I was visiting Seattle last weekend from Oklahoma and ever since I got back home, I have literally been day dreaming about their cod fish&chips and garlic malt vinegar! The cod was perfectly battered lightly fried and crispy, and the garlic vinegar just blew my mind. Let's just say my hands smelled of malt vinegar the rest of the day.. Anyhow, this place was exactly what we were looking for. It was a diner/dive set up with an order at the counter option, and then you just wait for your number to be called. My kind of place.. this place got orders out pretty quickly and we had our food in a matter of minutes. Spud could be equated to a fast food joint but man oh man, this fish tastes fresh! I couldn't get over it! and its easy on your wallet...no waiting in a crazy line at expensive swanky restaurant here. Just good ole fish&chips along Alki beach. Disappointing is the best word for Spud Fish and Chips, and I hope they took my feedback seriously. I ordered a 3 piece cod with fries for $13. The breading on the cod was so salty I peeled the breading off and just ate the cod inside, and the fries were totally undersalted. The cashier did offer me a refund which I appreciated but declined, as I did not want to seem like a scammer trying to get free food. I just wanted their food to be better and for them to take my comments under consideration. The cashier said he got the same complaint a couple other times this week. Great spot; wife, dog and I love the fish and chips. Generous pieces of fish and fries for $15...can't beat that deal. Service with COVID is minimal as interaction is minimal. But the staff seem good; all young and happy to be there. My only downside is you have to pay for an extra tarter sauce or if you want malt vinegar. hey- this place did it for me. cheap, fast and easy! not a lot on the menu but what they have, they did well. they also have 3 kinds of vinegar for your fish and fries. i kept it simple with 1 fish and fry. PERFECTLY crispy fish and fries. the fish was HUGE. well, YUGE. I'm glad i only got 1 piece. I tried some local green drink which was nice. the chowder was smokey/ bacon-y. I really missed my fish at spuds. So when I found out they re-opened, I called to order. I was told the ONLY way to order was to go through grub-hub or order through the website. So I gladly went through the extra steps for my favorite fish. As I was waiting outside for my order, people just walked in ordered their food, no problem, a group of 8 people, half of them with no masks. I had halibut (you could have fooled me) and my wife had cod (less expensive but more moist than the thin, flat, fillet of halibut). The batter was a flavorless, chewy skin on the fish. Located just across from Seattle's Alki Beach, this is a lovely spot for a good fish and chips! Food were served hot and fresh. The Alaskan cod used was fresh, juicy and savory with firmer flakes. The batter was not as as crunchy as the other beer-battered fish I've had in other places, but the fresh in-house tartar sauce offered just the right level of tanginess and acidity. It was served with a generous portion of chips that have been cut to right thickness and fried to crunchy perfection. The wait for our order of 1 fish and chips and 3 pieces of fish only was a bit long at about 35-40 minutes. The long wait is understandable, given it was the weekend of 4th of July and the Seafair Pirates Landing. However, I still think staff/server should update customers how long the expected time frame for wait will be prior to ordering food. This will help manage customers' expectations and give them the options to patiently wait or go some place else. read more

BF got a 3 piece fish & fries and a 1 piece fish & fries for me. The pieces of fish are huge which is why they only go up to a 3 piece meal. The fish was cooked fresh and had really good flavor would've been better with some lemon juice on top! The fries were also fresh cut and perfectly seasoned. This. Place. Is. Amazing. First of all, we went here around dinner time and expected to wait forever...didn't happen! The line was through the door, but We were in and out in a flash and able to make it across the street and settle at a place to watch the sunset over the bay. Secondly, I have hardcore allergies, and the staff were patient and accommodating and even provided an in depth listing of all ingredients so I could choose wisely. Third, and most importantly, the food is bomb diggity ! My boyfriend is not a fan of eating any critter of the sea; he usually takes a nibble to please me before spitting it out and making his "I still freaking hate fish, Kelly" face. This did not happen. He ate my prawns with no shame like they were chocolate cake. And rightfully so, they were fresh, plump, and outstanding. The fish was also outstanding and the portions plentiful. The fried clams were good, but slightly overshadowed by the ah-mazingness of the prawns. So, trust me on this - get food here. Eat! I promise you, you will not be disappointed. This place is legit. I'm not sure if I'd give this place 4 stars if it wasn't right on Alki, but hey, you've gotta take everything into account, right?? The weather was actually dreadful the other day when my boyfriend and I decided to go, but just the fact that we were on Alki, overlooking the water, and ordering fish and chips...it was still great. Service was quick. You walk in and order at the counter and then you sit and wait for your number to be called. We decided to take our food to-go, but this place would be a great spot to eat your food (with large windows looking outside) or you might as well take your food outside on a nice day. We ordered the #3 (2 fish and chips), a clams only (no fries), and a clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Even with a to-go order, they placed our fish and chips in the same paper bowl/plates you'd get if you were eating in, and then cautiously wrapped the plates in paper. The fish pieces were quite large. It maintained its crunch all the way home. The breading was a bit...bready (not very light), but we were still able to taste the fish, which was hearty and delicious. The clams were nicely fried but nothing made them any more special than clam strips I've ordered anywhere else. Same goes for the clam chowder. Fish and chips is the only way I'll eat my fries soggy. Spud's served a great mixture of both soggy and crispy fries and I really enjoyed them. I'd love to go back and dine-in; it looked like they had some infused-vinegar that I want to try. read more

I realize in my old review I neglected two mention how tasty their milkshakes are. They aren't hand scooped artisinal milkshakes scented with lavender, but sometimes you just can't beat a lovely chocolate malt. The sodas are kind of small and pricey (small is better for your health, though). I find myself wanting soda when I eat fried foods. If you take it to go you can bring your own soda! :) read more

I dont eat fish, and I try to stay away from fried food as much as possible, so of course this would not be on the top of my list of places to visit when looking for a meal. But a bunch of us helped my friend move over the weekend, and this is where they wanted to go. I ordered a very tasty chicken strip basket from the place that bills itself as the oldest fast food restaurant in Seattle. The breading had really good flavor and the chicken itself was moist. You get fairly decent sized chicken strips and homemade fries. These are the bad boys that still have a little bit of the peel on it. My friends loved the fish they got. They even have clam chowder in a bread bowl if you are into that sort of thing. Not the place I would go out of my way for, but if I do end up there, at least I know I have a good option. It's the big question every time a few friends want to have fish and chips at Alki - where to go, Spud or Sunfish? Every time we go to one or the other, we are pleased with the product and the discussion invariably begins - who is better? Spud or Sunfish? When you're eating one, you think it's great and can't remember if you like the other one better... with this dilemma in mind, a few friends set off to settle the score once and for all - and by settling the score, we scored each in a head to head taste test - on neutral ground, a picnic table next to Lady Liberty. We had 4 people - 2 gals, 2 guys and we taste-tested cod, halibut and chips from both restaurants... The scoring was done by a point system - with things like: Crunchiness of fish batter, tender fish, moisture of fish, flavor, greasiness, etc... all rated on a scale of 1-5 with a total possible of 80 points. Here's how they stacked up: Tester 1- 73 to Spud, 57 to Sunfish Tester 2 - 80 to Spud, 60 to Sunfish Tester 3 - 76 to Spud, 62 to Sunfish Tester 4 - 74 to Spud, 69 to Sunfish Tester 1 noted Sunfish staff was not friendly at all and that would keep him from returning even if their food was deemed better. It should also be noted the Spud food was ready about 10 minutes quicker than the Sunfish food. So, there you have it folks, sure, they are both good but, Spud is the hands-down winner in this age-old dispute for best fish and chips on Alki. read more

This place is great! It's a good casual place for a family meal, plus the view of the beach on the second floor is beautiful. I like how the fish is a huge fillet! The breading was perfect and the fish was flaky and moist. My husband and I shared the 3 piece meal with a clam chowder bread bowl. The total was $22.75. The bread bowl was good, although all my attention went to the fish n' chips. I'll probably just get the fish n' chips next time I go. I loved dipping everything in the tartar sauce and vinegar! They have parking in the back, but it's a pretty small parking lot, so be prepared to look for additional parking if you come during a busy time. The employees are mostly busy in the kitchen area, so tables may have crumbs/spills/stickiness. This is just a relaxed place where you can enjoy a good meal with good friends. The food here is pretty good on it's own although a tad pricey, but once you add the cool breeze, the smell of the ocean air, and the general atmosphere of one of Seattle's nicest tourist locations, your meal is just that much better. Service at this location has always been top notch as they are able to move through the endless stream of customers. I have also sat in the restaurant on several occasions and it always looks clean and organized while maintaining an old school charm that is perfectly fitting to the location. For those that don't know, Spud was purchased by Ivar's several years ago so you will see some menu items that cross over, but they did keep the signature cod fillets that have been the staple of the Spud fish and chips menu for decades. read more

Spud on Alki has been reviewed to death, but I can't help adding to the pile of reviews for one reason: I was afraid it wouldn't be as good since Ivar's bought the place. Don't get me wrong, I like Ivar's - but I LOOVE The Spud! (If you could be romantic with a plate of hot, fried fish, yes: I'd be all over it) A visit this weekend proved that a corporate takeover doesn't mean the death of a local icon. The fish is as delightfully light anf flavorful as ever, the fresh cut fries; never fresher and the slaw is a dream come true. Bonus: For this history buff, the small "Spud Museum" offers a fun reason to hang out a bit after filling up on the best take out style fish n chips anywhere. As a kid, this was the only restaurant my super cheap father would ever spring for and that childhood memory of goodness is alive today in West Seattle. Hooray! read more

Good friends of ours came into town this past weekend and asked to take us to lunch. They chose Spuds - he's been coming here since he was a kid and this is his absolute favoritist place to come, so my expectations were high. Kind of a let down to find out they're owned by Ivars. Fish was very nice - I had the halibut; loved the crust. But my biggest complaint - no mayo; no lemon. Our friend said "oh, no - no mayo! You've got to have their tartar sauce - the very best!" Dude, I don't care for tartar sauce, ok? I need my mayo with my fish. But just like Ivar's, mayo is not available. Don't understand that - how can you offer fish or even french fries, for that matter, without having mayo available? Makes no sense to me. Location was absolutely wonderful - we happened to enjoy a rare gorgeous Seattle almost-summer day. And I did enjoy the history on the walls; very museum like. I suspect that our friend loves this so much more for his childhood memories than what it actually is lol But not a bad place - next time I come, I'll know to stick some mayo packets in my purse. read more

I have a weakness for fish and chips and in Seattle, Spuds by far is my personal favorite. The West Seattle Spuds in now owned by Ivars and the product has somewhat evolved since the split. For those interested in the differences from between the Greenlake and West Seattle Spuds, here is what I noticed. Fish: the cod seems to be the same. Similar in cut, but size every so slightly larger at Greenlake per piece. The batter coating at WS is more uniformly coated, ala Ivars. I prefer the dipped batter fish at Greenlake. Fries: I 'd have to give the nod to WS. Crisper and more uniform in size. Fries at Greenlake inconsistent. Tarter: It comes with your order at WS at no extra charge but I prefer the tarter at Greenlake. It tastes like it is made there? Value: Greenlake is more expensive than WS. Almost $2 more for a 2 piece order. Misc: WS has more seating and an expanded menu of Ivars items. I wish Greenlake would have tarter and catsup without charging extra. But because of the batter, I give the iron chef award to Greenlake. Just by a hair if anyone cares. read more

Went in here at the end of one of the few nice days this summer and was pleasantly surprised. Tender flaky fish inside a well-breaded but not hard exterior. The fries were fine too. They even do a pretty good job of packing it to-go without using take-out containers. Neat trick. Again - one of those "exactly what you were expecting" kind of places. No more or less. And a little bit of "ol Seattle flavor" (in a good way) in an increasingly homogenized (or only unique at the high end) city. I love Spud fish and chips, for sure a staple in West Seattle for some of the best fish in town. I'm so glad this place hasn't changed with the times, you don't see too many places like this anymore. Right when you walk in you get a heavy dose of old history of the area, pictures and information are displayed all over of the olden days. It's really cool to read while you wait for your food, a lot of rich history going on in that location. The food has been solid for years, not much has changed, if it ain't broke don't fix it type thing. They have all sorts of combos, cod, halibut, shrimp, clams, and of course chowdah. Prices are close to other fish places too. This place gets packed on the weekends and on nice days but there is plenty of seating, main floor, upstairs, and outside, and if it's all taken then a short walk across the street to the beach is a great alternative to sit and eat. Parking can be challenging, small lot in the back of the restaurant and on the street but that about it. So on busy days keep this in mind. read more
