Lots of reviews on this place claim Spud's has fantastic fish and chips. Naturally we had to try because who doesn't like fish and chips? Upon our arrival (around 5pm) there was a line nearly out the door. The place was packed so naturally the noise inside was LOUD. And hot. Very hot inside, we opted for the outdoor seating and were entertained by a seagull digging tartar sauce containers out of the trash. Hungry bird. There were tons of crows flying around and making a racket. The trash bins were overflowing and spilling across the sidewalk. Tables were filthy but a quick scrub with a wet napkin and viola! Clean seating. Service was pretty fast and friendly. My husband ordered the special, 3 pieces of fish, a large tartar sauce and large drink with some clam chowder (how he could eat the chowder in the heat is beyond me..) and I got a one piece fish and chips. The fish pieces are huge... I was surprised. However, the fish looked and tasted way over battered. The fries we got were cold and had been overcooked (last time I checked black char is over done). Not good at all. I didn't bother finishing mine and neither did my husband (though since he ordered so much I'm doubtful he could have finished it all anyway). I will say their ice cream shake was pretty good. Tasty on a hot day. Stick with the regular size as it's pretty big. The shake did not make up for the disappointing fish and chips. been eating here for many years. Yesterday ordered a take out. I am 75 yo and it was cold out. So I asked the young lady if she would bring the order to my car, (I was parked in front, at curb). She gave me a bad look and said 'we only bring the order to the door.' So my wife waited outside for order. Came home and starting eating. The fish had a bit of unusual taste and smell. Not real bad, but my wife said it smelled a bit sour. I can't help but think we were targeted and something was put on the fish. read more

I have to say that this beats Ivars fish and chips! Very friendly and quick service, the employees also did a great job of tidying up. The fish tasted fresh and perfectly fried- the pieces are huge! Fries are fresh, natural cut. I will definitely be back when I come out to Alki again. read more

I've been using them for my fish and chips for over 30 years in the last 3 years they have not lived up to my likings the cost went up I don't mind that the fish is not as good I think they are buying cheaper fish and it's way thinner and the crust is like harder not what we got in the 80 or 90 or 2000S the fish has gone from a 3 oz to a 2 oz per piece and the fries well they used to cover the bottom of the holder not no more and I had an order of claims [[ only ]] they didn't even cover the bottom of the basket it might have been 2 oz at 6.99 cost of lunch 20 bucks and I went home 1/3 of what we usually get i,m [[ DONE WITH THEM ]] going to find a better place I heard the guy on 35 this better next time id bet in total for the 20 bucks I got 5 oz of fish sick to give them a good review when they don't and are not being anywhere close to fair read more

2 stars is the PERFECT rating for Spuds! Meh. I've expereinced better... The Good 1) They have a menu option to purchase fish fries, first time I saw it nice feature. 2) The pieces of fish were about 2.5 times as big as a normal fish stick so it was a good value in that respect.. 3) Location - right on the beach great views etc. 4) 3 kinds of vinegar... free of charge! The Bad 1) The fish was just normal... not the best. Nothing to write home about... just slightly better than Skippers used to be but probably not as good as Ivars. 2) The decor / booths / seating is old, dated and uncomfortable, especially if you have a hard time getting around. 3) My 2 pieces of fish and chips were over-priced by about 15% 4) My fish fell apart and was a total mess... I couldn't even dip it in the tartar sauce I had to PAY FOR! The UGLY: The coup de grace occured when the guy taking my order pointed at a little miniature thing of tartar sauce and asked me if that was enough for my fish or if I wanted to PAY for double that amount! Rediculous you already are charging a premium (which is understandable to an extent based on your high-rent beachfront location) but are things really THAT bad that you have to charge for tartar sauce!? Tacky and offensive I will try one of the 5 or so other fish and chip places next time, I will not return, I will adise my friends and family to go elsewhere and if you the reader want some good classic Seattle fish and chips I reccomend you go to Ivars. As far as I'm concerned Spud serves the best fish and chips in Seattle. I love the cod patties versus the fish sticks of their competitors. I was stuffed after a three piece and being able to walk across the street and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach is a big plus. The Spud rules! read more

I was in Alki Beach and smelling the ocean air, I began to have a strong craving for fried seafood. As luck (or unluck) would have it, Spuds was right there calling my name out. I went in with high hopes and ordered the cod fillet and chips. It seemed a little pricy (12 bucks or so) for fried fast food, but I was willing to go along for some delicious fried seafood goodness. I could not have been more disappointed. The fish was rubbery and quite greasy. There is nothing worse than eating something that tastes bad and yet is bad for you. So after a couple of bites of one of my fish fillets, I decided to stop. I briefly contemplated offering it to a hungry looking guy sitting near me. Then I decided not to be so inconsiderate to another human being, and just tossed a nearly untouched platter of food in the trash. I am not a picky eater and hardly ever throw away food. Great food and location but a serious issue with service. I paid for a meal and the server seriously refused to give me ketchup in spite of the menu clearly stating that ketchup is part of the meal. Even if the ketchup were not clearly on the menu, who in their right mind refuses to just hand out a condiment at a fish and chips place? I wasn't the only one, either. Another customer was having a similar issue with the same server that was parroting the phrase "you have to request it" like there's some secret way to order. Coming from a guy that loves his seafood rich and robust like how they do seafood in Texas and Louisiana, I never found a place in the Puget Sound area that did fish and chips justice. They all sucked. As a matter of fact I'm shocked that Seattle having an abundance of seafood makes the worst seafood in probably all the world. Yes, that is a bold statement to make, but it is the truth, especially when it comes to fish and chips. Ivar's (the worst of all times, cause of the money you pay to get slop and I feel bad for the poor tourist you see lining up to be disappointed...it is deceitful I tell you), Skipper's (at least before they went out of business they tried having a better batter and I'm not too sure if an all you can eat was a positive or negative thing), Wally's (probably the place I considered to be worth spending my money, until coming to Spud's), Harmon's Brewing Co. & Restaurant (the worst of the lot), and don't get me started with Crab Pot's old freezer burned tasting seafood, it's pure garbage. I may be showing favoritism to Long John Silver's or it may be nostalgia, but when I was a kid in TX, LJS had the best all you can eat fish and chips. Those little crunchies were the best. Well, since LJS finally got to WA, it was my favorite place to get some fish minus the chips. I usually opt for all hushpuppies. The issue of late with the LJS fish that I had been getting, is that the thing is saturated in oil and old dingy brown oil at that. I had to wrap each fish in napkins before eating it. I just stopped going when I saw napkins completely soaked with oil after unwrapping my fish to eat. I declare that Spud's is the best fish and chips! The flesh of the fish had actual flavor. It didn't taste like water or nothing. I still don't understand how places sell fish and it literally taste like nothing when it is in your mouth. So, when I bit into this fish and both the crust and fish had a delicious flavor, I was shocked. You see, I had to be coaxed to eat the fish, cause the breading looked so familiar to the coating on most fish I've seen in this area. I was happy sipping on my soda and dipping my fresh cut fries in the garlic & malt vinegars, hot sauce, and ketchup. The fries are better than Dick's and Pick Quick's. This place has the best homemade fries, which makes the fish taste even better. Fish and chips or any seafood ain't cheap, so it should taste like what I had at Spud 'sor when I have all you can eat crabs at a local casino. I am happy my friend took me to Spud. Only thing is.....I'm even more perplexed as to why and how Ivar's became as popular as it is in the Puget Sound area. read more

This beachy place offers the yummy fish and chips in town. This review is for summer of 2016. When I was there everything was fried perfectly and served very hot and fresh. I'm not a fan of their mozzarella sticks because their flash frying separated the cheese from the batter which was a bummer. It's very fast and casual and if you're coming with a big group, come when it won't be busy/ probably a weekday or weekend when they first open. Great views and nice people working. A cute little fish and chip spot that has been a staple in West Seattle/Alki for what seems like forever. They were apparently one of the first restaurant businesses in the area! What's not to like about lunch with a view? It is right across from Alki beach, which is awesome. I really enjoy their fish and chips, but many times their chips are soggy, which is usually pretty disappointing. Their homemade vinegar is a little too watered down for me, but it is still decent. The tartar sauce is incredible. I definitely recommend getting the upgrade and getting the size up. I'd be interested in coming back to try their milkshake sometime. read more

For more years than I want to admit, I have been going to SPUDS. (Although only the one in Alki.) I have seen it change A LOT in the years. They have added to the menu, almost too much in my opinion. Also they have added to the cost on the menu. Yes everything does go up, that is life, but I think it is getting edgy with the pricing. 7 to 8 bucks for 2 pieces of fish and fries? Plus they charge you for the tarter and catsup's. Whats up with that? However, the fish is good. In-fact really good. I am not a fish person, but I love the cod. So, when in Seattle I skip Ivar's and head to Spuds. I usually do not stray much from the fish and chips, but I did have the calm chowder last time and it was pretty good. I would suggest the place if you are in the area or want to drive to Alki and have a bite to eat. I would not tell people they HAVE to go there. read more

Really wanted to try this place after hearing people say good things about it. So one day when I was in Alki I tried some of their cod and chips. I just got the one piece since their pieces are big and it was only around 6 bucks as opposed to almost 9 for 2 pieces. One piece of fish was plentiful. It was very flaky and I had some of their garlic vinegar (yum!) to go with it. The fish did not really have much flavor on its own. The tartar sauce was ok but I've had better. There was no line when I got there around 4 but it took a while to get my food. It's all made to order though. The fries were ok but nothing special. I don't think I will be back as I wasn't to crazy about the food. I think you're better off bringing your own food and having a picnic when you're at Alki beach or going to Slices and getting pizza to eat on the beach. read more

This little joint has been around since 1914xx. Crazy. But that has given them enough time to truly ultimately refine themselves into operational excellence. It's interesting to notice that immediately when you walk into the the main doors the menu is at the top of the second set of inner doors. It keeps you in a ordering purgatory away from the cash registers. This way you know for a fact that people in purgatory are not ready to order. So you may quickly and politely walk around them to place your order at a register. There have been so many times when I was behind someone at a fast food joint where I was ready, but they were not. After wasting some time time behind them in what I thought was the line, I realize they are not. So I have to ask that tired old question "are you in line?" Alternatively, the order takers wave you up front to place your order in front of the people in decision limbo. I think this menu purgatory is an excellent idea! We got the halibut and fries. It's interesting to note that the halibut alone is a dollar less. So you mean to tell me that an entire order of fries is only a dollar!? Yes! Well then, gimme some of those fries! It's a complete no-brainer to get the fries based on cost. I wasn't even wanting any fries and I was sold by the pricing strategy they employed. If the price differential was $5, then hell no to fries for me. $4, hell no again. $3, hell no again. $2 is where is starts to get interesting for me. And my awesome wife and I were sharing the order, so at that point you could say the fries are only a dollar apiece. But what is the break point for you to order fries? It's different for everyone, but almost universally, one could say that $1 is a no-brainer. So it is absolute genius to price out the Halibut at $14.99 and the halibut and fries at $15.99. We are being manipulated to the only logical choice! Fries were a little soggy for my personal taste. But dipping them in ketchup or tarter sauce made them delicious. The halibut was excellent in my opinion. The large coke was sufficient for me and my wife get to get plenty of fluids each. But we're not the kind to down 22oz of coke each with our meals. Well, if you like it all fried then this place is for you. I'm not much into fried food but decided to stop for lunch with my wife. I ordered the fried prawns. They weren't bad. But, you know that feeling of regret that you tend to have after eating a big nasty plate of nothing but fried food, followed by an overwhelming sense of resolve to never do that again? Yeah, that's what happened to me. Today I was at Alki Beach and was looking for a place to eat dinner. I walked by Spuds, stopped for a moment, and then reflected on the shame and the angry belly feelings that I had experienced there not so long ago. And I walked on. Im a big fish and chips fan. This place has a great reputation so I finally was able to visit. I just got a basic cod and chips...I ate it but I didn't like the overwhelming batter taste from the batter and the tarter tasted too much like relish. I just ate the fish with no sauce. Each time I come here, I wonder why I visit this place so often. The food certainly is about what you would get at Ivar's, with the difference that Ivar's menu is larger and the latter has bacon in its clam chowder which I prefer. The reason is convenience, view and history. This place accepts credit cards, which is important to me.The upper level of this restaurant has one of the best views on Alki Beach and I like how they decorate it with respect to this place's history. Yet, don't we forget that Spud is owned by Ivar's and I think that might be one of the reasons why the flavor is not really distinctive from its mother company's offerings. If it's for the view or for your kids or you want to pay by credit card, come here, if it's for the flavor there is at least one good alternative on Alki Beach. read more

After trying Spud twice in as many years, I have a feeling that the only reason they have a 3.5 star rating on Yelp is because it's been a classic fixture on Alki for decades. The service is quick but curt (but then again, I wouldn't be so happy-go-lucky if I was frying potatoes and all manner of seafood for 8 hours a day) and the food has always been a let-down. For example: Shrimp cocktail: after one taste of the overly salty cocktail sauce, I only kept eating because I was starving and even then, I didn't even get through half of it before chucking it. Clam chowder: Meh. I've had better. Prawns and chips: fries were okay and the prawns that appeared giant at first glance actually turned out to be mostly greasy breading (not even the good kind!). After spending nearly $10/person at Spud, you'll probably leave feeling full...but not in a good way. Next time I'm around Alki, I'll definitely opt for something else. read more

If you want tasty fish n chips and bomb clamp chowder, this is the place to go. Their fish portions are huge, much bigger than your average fish n chips joint. I shared "The Special" (3 fish, fries, xl drink, and large tartar) and a bowl of claim chowder with one other person. And the end of it we felt obnoxiously full. They have a good variety of vinegars to choose from as well highly recommended. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. I can remember walking with my grandma all the way here to have a piece of cod and a green river from the soda fountain and to me 20 years ago it was the best thing ever! now.. not so much. i came in a few weeks ago because i had time to kill and i thought i would check it out. the kid taking my order smelled of BO and all the employees were standing around talking. the portions were smaller than i remember The fish was chewy and didn't seem real fresh and my fries were soggy and cold as if they just scraped up with had fallen out of other baskets on the fry line on and no green river! just because you put up nostalgic pics of how long you have been in business doesn't make your food good. and its just as spendy and everywhere else so head down to sunfish. i would much rather put up with a grumpy greek than a smelly teenager read more

For years I've told everyone that Spud's has the best fish & chips. I had a friend visit from Tel Aviv so I took him to the Alki location on a nice sunny day. How the mighty have fallen. The fish was dry and greasy, not like the flaky delicious halibut that I remembered from the past. Some parts seemed like greasy breading only. Everything just felt overcooked and overly greasy, I felt gross after eating it. My friend was not impressed in the slightest, and I felt like I had let him down because I hyped up Spud's so much. Not sure if it's just the Alki location or what, but I think I'll be looking for other places to get my fish & chips hankering taken care of. read more

I am not a huge fan of fish and chips but these were very good, and of course it had that 1950s era fast-food feel that seems to be completely legitimate here, since it looks like it hasn't been remodeled since 1950. It is dirt cheap and very fried, but as far as the food goes it is great! Take it out to the lake and enjoy, Just remember to order the Ketchup! read more
