First off--- what is wrong with you people??!?!? 2-3 stars for the one of the best Italian restaurants I have found in LA? You cray-cray yelpers! I came here with my friend from Chicago and had one of the most amazing nights I've spent in L.A. We got here pretty late on a Friday and it was packed but only waited about 5 minutes or so. We sat inside at an intimate table and proceeded to browse the HUGE menu. Most people on here are talking about the pizza but I have one word for you -- GNOCCHI. I think I have met my soul mate. I may never get married and have the 2.5 kids but if I'm left alone with Spumoni's gnocchi, I would wine and dine it and propose to it on the first date. I wouldn't mind traveling to Italy and meeting it's parents and pretending to know Italian....all to spend my LIFE with my new love. I ordered the Gnocchi Arrabbiata E Funghi Mushroom in a Spicy Tomato Sauce and had them add spicy sausage. It came in a HUGE bowl and was more than I should of ate in one sitting but as with all good first dates... I had little self control. SIDENOTE: as my friends were laughing over wine and enviously looking at what people ordered, these adorable old women behind me couldn't help but notice me staring -- I mean STARING -- at their tiramisu. They spoke up and told me to give me my fork and they gave me a bite!!! IT was DIVINE. So of course we ordered it and the server told my cute friend that a cannoli "accidentally" made its way on to the plate. Excellent tiramisu, AMAZING gnocchi and a great experience. Against my better judgement, I went to Spumoni on Montana this week and violated 2 of my cardinal rules: 1) Never go out on Montana 2) Never eat at a restaurant with a neon sign, unless it's cheap Asian. And karma payed me back. Terrible bread. Vinegary 'reserve' wine. And ceasar salad bathing in too much grocery store dressing. Was there for the pizza, as that was reviewed well. It was decent...good cheese, nice sauce. But a pizza without a crispy crust does not a good pizza make, and too much cheese. More of delivery/NY style pizza than an Italian restuarant pizza in style (not necessarily a bad thing, just a description). I still prefer Il Forno or La Vecchia for West Side pizza/pasta cafes. read more

THE GOOD: Excellent food. This place is a little Italian gem. The wine was wonderful, great authentic food, great menu options, delicious breads, excellent caprese...(I could continue but you get it). THE BAD: Small place with one waitress so she gets pretty busy and may not get to you as quickly as one may be accustomed to in other establishments. Not a fan of the olive oil they use. I haven't been back to Spumoni in a while, but I remember I enjoyd having their Spaghetti Scampi (something like that...) I like their pink sauce and the fact that they're very generous about their portion. I love shrimp, so I was so happy to see lots of shrimps on my plate =) ... unlike some places where they give you 3 or 4 pieces of shrimp. I like their desserts too. =) fast-seating, casual, oh... This is probably the closest restaurant to us (although many more not much farther) and we go pretty regularly. I love the olive tapenade and bread they bring you. The wine list is really good and not overly priced. Very rustic classic Italian food with a few twists here and there. They also have a good selection of salads. Love the addition of the pizza oven and open bar - this totally updates the vibe inside. Some nights they have live music - and the guy we saw last time did great Sinatra. read more

I was excited when I saw a groupon for this place. I got 3 items for takeout -$50 the calamari was so overcooked and rubbery but maybe they were trying to hide the fishy flavor from the far from fresh calamari. Inedible! The pizza was overall terrible. Frozen box pizza is better than this! Gnocchi- Only edible item and it wasn't so great. On top of the horrible italian food the waitress was rude and couldn't be bothered, even with another groupon offering I would never waste my money here again. My work mom took me here to dinner with her husband as a late birthday hurrah because they were gone during my real birthday and wanted to celebrate my acceptance into a top MBA program in europe. The restaurant is on a quaint street on Montana Ave in SAMO its so cute reminds me on San Vicente in Brentwood. The restaurant is small so its a very romantic setting to take your lady friend or soon to be lady friend. We got to the restaurant without any reservations, and my work mom bought 2 bottles of wine her friend from napa recently gave them. The tables inside were all filled, but the manager of the restaurants personally came out to greet us, it seems like my work parents frequent the location and they were like the godfathers of the place. We were seated promptly and the manager took our orders personally. We ordered: 1) Quattro Pizza - prosciutto, olives, artichoke hearts on yummy crust and melted cheese it was really good! the slices of prosciutto were thick and heavenly 2) Seafood pasta with mussels, shrimp - I forgot the name of this dish but it was tomato sauce based, the noodles were cooked perfectly and the sauce was not too heavy it tasted like the ocean - I highly recommend 3) Vodka Pasta - really great pink sauce, it was too plain for my liking but my work mom doesnt not eat seafood. Tiramisu and Cannoli were given on the house because of my birthday celebration, I must say one of the best tiramisu I've tried in a while and I don't really like tiramisu... as for corkage fee it was only $10 for two bottles! I came here on a Wednesday night at 6:30 and the place was PACKED! and they dont take reservations so I wouldnt recommend it for large groups. I was with a party of 6 and we lucked out that we only had to wait about 10-15 mins. The menu is extensive but like every good Italian place, almost everyone ordered a special. I had the sole and several people at my table had the halibut. Both came with roasted potatoes and vegetables, it was a lot of food! The specials also come with soup or salad. We also ordered a cheese pizza for everyone to share. The crust and sauce were yummy but I could've used a bit more cheese. We shared a tiramisu, which I usually don't like bc of the coffee flavor, but this one was more chocolatey so I really enjoyed it . Let me say up front, this place is not particularly special, but I'm a fan of neighborhood joints and this place fits the bill. I went without reservations on a Sunday evening at prime dinner time but had no problem getting a seat for two. We had the spumoni appetizer platter -- decent, not great but at least they don't skimp on the prosciutto -- then had the linguine pescatore while my dining mate had the pesto gnocci. My dish was far better; in fact, I would not recommend the gnocci at all, at least not with the pesto sauce. Though as an FYI I'm a huge lover of garlic and my feeling is, if you're going to eat garlic, particularly in a pesto, I should have garlic oozing out of my pores. Nasty, but food is supposed to have flavor, no? If it weren't in my general 'hood, I'd probably give it 3 stars but again, I'm a fan of good neighborhood finds so 4 stars it is. read more

Definitely one of my favorite Italian places. Solid food. Great service. Cozy and charming atmosphere. Great place to have a low-key dinner with the girls and catch up. Pros: Fantastic, authentic Italian dishes. Appropriate portion sizes (not so large that you'd suspect they are trying to kill you...). Reasonable prices (you can get a filling meal for $15 tax & tip included...if you are not having any alchohol). The arrabiata sauce is actually spicy! Gnocchi is creamy, delish and not too heavy (unless you eat the whole dish...if you eat half you'll be full and have leftovers). Lots of yummy free bread to fill up on to help you get full if you're on a budget...not helpful if you're trying not to load up on carbs. Small parking lot in back - spaces are tight but you should be able to grab one since it seems the majority of patrons are coming from within walking distance. Waiters are very friendly. Cons: The place is pretty small and tables are really, really close to each. This can be charming when the place isn't full (like if you come at off hours...like a slightly early dinner right at 5pm). But when its packed it can be annoying since you'll be pretty much locked into your seat for the entire meal since there isn't much circulation space between seats. Bathroom is in a weird funky shared space for the whole building (not really very convenient). read more

But the bread and olive tapanade they bring out before your meal is YUM. Closest thing to a NY pizza is the pizza from Spumoni. (I've given it the 4 stars for that fact alone.) Otherwise, food is consistantly good. Basic pasta and Italian dishes. But, go for the pizza if you are seeking a little piece of the east cost in Santa Monica. The 'new guy' lives in the area and asked if I wanted Italian for dinner. Did I ever...so we visited Spumoni on Sat evening 9/4/10. Easy, free parking behind the restaurant. We were seated as soon as we arrived, even though the room was packed, as was the outside seating. Every inch is maximized for seating, so this wouldn't be a great pick if you need to have a private discussion or intimate chat. Friendly, quick service, very attentive to adding water, bringing more bread, etc. I ordered the Gnocchi {something} Mare, with clams, calamari and shrimp - yum! Huge portion, very good. The fella ordered Lemon Chicken; he cleaned his plate and I had a taste of the delicious chicken to confirm its lemony goodness. Neither of us eat sweets (how I miss them!), so I can't comment on the desserts. After the Bruins blew it in the Pac-10 tournament, I was in need of some serious comfort food. My bf lives in walking distance to this place, and we'd been meaning to check it out. The other reviewers are right, this place is teeny, but it's also very cozy. There's local artwork on the wall, and if you score a table by the window you can do some people-watching. We didn't have a reservation and we didn't have to wait at all (not bad for a small place on a Thursday night). Their breadsticks and olive spread were delicious. I got the farfalle with vodka sauce, and my pasta was cooked perfectly. My man got the gnocchi with four-cheese sauce, and it was sooooo rich and delicious. (If you're a gnocchi fan, they have a whole selection of different types). We both had tons left over, and it was just as tasty the next day. Good, solid, very inexpensive Italian food. This is a no-frills kind of place, and will never compete with the higher end Italian places that seem to be all over town, but fulfills a role for those that may not want to spend $100 per person on dinner, but still want a nice meal and a glass or two of good house chianti. I will never go back here again. We unfortunately took the family there including our kids tonight. When we got there, We were told there was no wait. 5 minutes later an extremely young and rude hostess tells me there is a 15 minute wait. When I explained to her that the other employee informed us there was a table ready that was in front of us with no one else waiting for it, she repeated with a horrible grin that we could not sit their . We left there and went to Louise's where we were treated 100% better and had an amazing meal. I do not recommend anyone go to Spumoni. The young rude girl should be trained properly. read more

What a darling family restaurant. The food is spectacular here. everything I've ordered here has always been delicious. This is a warm and cozy restaurant that is almost always full. For a good reason. The dishes are Large portion and always flavorful. This restaurant is a favorite of ours and my mother-in-law. I just LOVE this place. It is my go-to restaurant when I want a good meal with friendly service. I pretty much go about 3 times a month for dinner with girlfriends since it is reasonable and delicious. Most of the staff have been there for a while, so they recognize me as a regular which is fun and rare in LA. I think Spumoni pizza is the best ever...their sauce has the perfect amount of garlic! Now that we have only take out my kids wanted Italian so we ordered from Spumoni as it is close to home. This is a mediocre restaurant at the best of times but there take out is awful. Ordered a Caesar salad which was $11.00 in the online menu but they charged us $13.00. Ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce for my son and asked them to put some basil on top and they charged me $19.00 for a very cheap dish because it is not in the menu and they charged $3.00 for the basil! Who ever heard of an Italian restaurant charging for basil!!! Outrageous. I asked for Parmesan for the pasta and they put a tiny container of cheese in top of the hot spaghetti so it melted into on small blob. We threw it out and used our own but it was done without any consideration. They put our salad in a separate bag as it was cold so they easily could have put the cheese on top of the salad so as not to spoil it. Needless to say I will never go back. Spumoni's is very small inside. I usually go around lunch time. and I am never having to wait. I've been here two times and they were both amazing experiences. On both occasions, my boyfriend and I showed up with no reservation and we got seated within 10 minutes. The place is small, with indoor seating as well as outside. The service is great, they're fast and very nice. And the food? AHH so goood!! I ordered the penne pasta with spicy arriabata sauce and my bf ordered a pasta with Gnocchi and meat, not sure what it was called but he loved his dish as well. I'll start off by saying that it's closer to 3 1/2 stars. The food is decent enough, but not so amazing compared to other Italian restaurant standards that have set the bar a little higher in my mind. The Gnocchi bar is a cool idea, but when I tried them, I wasn't that blown away! Especially considering that it is something they feature on the menu. It's kind of a small place, but the noise level is not that bad. The ambience is conducive to having a good conversation over some wine. It is a little on the pricey side, though. The restrooms are upstairs, and you need a key to access them. I understand the reasons why this is necessary, but still not the best thing you want when dining out. read more

I live down the street and occasionally have gone to the old Spumoni. I have gone there on July 4th and the meal was awful. I returned the dry over cooked chicken ...replace it with hot hot over the top spicy pasta dish , that I ended up barely touched. the service is still friendly but what's with te pricing !!!! $20 for any pasta dish. I asked to substitute veggies for pasta , they said we need to add another $2. Come on ! We all know the price of pasta ! Fortunately LA has wonderful Italian restaurants...thank god ! I read more

I ordered takeout from Spumoni over the phone. They told me 15 minutes, so I walked over from my apartment. I paid for my food and ended up waiting an additional 10 minutes after I got there for my food (so it ended up being 25 minutes total.) I ordered the lasagna and I have to say there was WAY too much meat in it. It was layer of noodles, thick layer of ground beef, repeat. There wasn't really any cheese except the top layer. I'm not really a fan and I'll probably end up going to Vicenzo across the street from now on. read more

Very nice manager! Very sweet and cute ambience. I loved the flowers on every table. Perfect for a date or with friends. Outdoor seating is lovely with the breeze on a sunny day. We ordered the mushroom gnocchi and the veal dish. The salad that came with it was delish! And a glass of white wine is perfect even on a sunny Friday afternoon. The crushed olives served with the bread is sooooo yummy with olive oil and vinegar to start the meal. But save room for dessert! The manager brought us a Tiramisu for free!
