We started out with the deviled eggs and biscuits and both were to die for. The biscuits melt in your mouth and the crab on the eggs was perfection. I would recommend getting the jelly for the biscuits as the pimento wasn't my favorite. Appetizers came out quickly. Biscuits were a 10/10 and eggs were a solid 9/10. For our main course we ordered the Ax Ribeye. Honestly it was underwhelming especially considering everyone says it's the best steak in DC. I've had much better in the area and would give it a 6/10. For sides we chose broccoli and mashed potatoes. Broccoli was perfect. Mashed potatoes were a unique concept but needed some salt and pepper or just some kind of seasoning! I recently took a trip to St. Anslem for my birthday, and the food definitely made my day special. When walking into St. Anslem it gives off a manly-mans vibe. Dark and mysterious with various animals adorning walls and shelves, including the bear skin rug on the wall near the restrooms. At this point I knew the meat options being prepared would be delicious. Although St. Anslem's menu is a littler on the smaller side, it packs a punch with flavor. We started our evening with the infamous buttermilk biscuits, which I must say are heavenly. These squares of soft, pillowy pleasure are served hot with pimento cheese. We asked for some jam and honey, and all of it was divine. We also ordered some fried okra, which was good even though I'm not really a fan of okra. This was crispy and paired well with the sauce provided. For our entrees I opted for the whole dorade fish, which was accompanied with marinated tomatoes and pickled fennel. Seasoned perfectly and all the flavors paired so well together. My dinner date opted for the ribeye, and it literally melted like butter...perfection. The ribeyes was so good, when I bite it I could tell the presence of every single ingredients and seasoning in the steak, and it literally compliments each other to influence the taste of the steak, and that was magical. I visited St Anselm once again, on a Monday. It was a warm day so I was trying to stay cool. The train car was cool but the heat blasted everything. I sat at the bar again and the bartender came over. I ordered a German Pilsner and started to look at the menu. I had a good idea what I wanted...but I looked anyway. I really enjoy the wall hangings and vibe of this restaurant. All kinds of different wall hangings, heads from the hunt, various posters and prints. It's the most unique place I have ever eaten. I decided on the NY strip and the fried mashed potatoes. I have never had fried mashed potatoes so I thought why not. The beer is going down fine...I was on the thirsty side. I order another brew and the food arrives. The potatoes are piping hot. The steak looks great. I let everything cool off a bit. The steak had a perfect sear on it. I want to visit the kitchen someday to see how they do that. It's cooked perfect; I asked for medium rare. The potatoes are ok, not quite my thing. Still good though. I finish everything and I'm out. Four of us went for lunch on Christmas Eve. We had two appetizers: thick cut bacon and the biscuits with the pimento cheese. I could have made a meal of those two items! Several of us had the Denver omelette, and it was delicious as well. The hot chocolate, coffee and iced tea were all excellent. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, but they're not overbearing. The decor is rustic, which curios from earlier American history. Came in for my birthday on a week night. It was so dark I had to use the table candle to read which made me feel super old. We got the prawn - chewy and over cooked - and the pimento cheese biscuits. Biscuits were good but the cheese could of done with more heat. A bit one note. My husband got the butchers cut which was under seasoned and not well rested. This was our first time here for date night and we were both very happy with the whole experience. Our waiter was excellent and very informative. Ambiance was great, dim lighting and candles on the tables. It has a vintage tavern feel in decor and feels very warm and inviting. They had an excellent selection of beers on tap and by bottle. I ordered a steak since it was highly recommended, along with the coveted biscuits and pimento cheese. The Pit Sandwich was probably the most flavorful beef sandwich I have ever had. The only gripe I have with this is that we were presented with one server and got another. Tip: We used the onion cream sauce from the Baby Carrots dish to balance the relish. I am a Starr super fan. I love his restaurants and try to visit them even when I'm outside of DC. I went to St. Anselm last night after having dined several other times there since opening, but it just doesn't seem to be up the the Starr quality one expects. It was a handful of small things that just piled on to make it an ok experience vs exceptional. First, we ordered a side of biscuits, (we only wanted them) but were charged/given the pimento cheese (which was an additional $6. which wasn't eaten). The cheese were sold separately from the biscuits so I know it wasn't required. Then we ordered steaks, one medium one meidum rare, the medium was medium rare and the medium rare was rare. It was a sliced steak so the chef should have seen it wasn't cooked to order. Then the corn side dish. We thought this was a sharing side since it was priced at $10. It was a SINGLE ear of corn. For $10. How are people supposed to share sides when its a single ear of corn? Again, a few details that pushed my general love for STARR restaurants into the 3 star ok zone. read more

Visited St. Anselm in October with my brother, Jeffery, after he mentioned wanting a great steak dinner. I searched around, found this spot with fantastic reviews, and made a reservation. We chose to sit outside, and even though it was a bit chilly, their heated outdoor area made it comfortable--almost too warm at first, but the staff happily moved us to a better spot. We decided to share the 38 oz Tomahawk steak, and wow--absolutely the right call. Perfectly cooked medium rare, tender, flavorful, and topped with a rich compound butter that melted right into the meat. Truly melt-in-your-mouth quality. Not a single bite made it into a doggy bag. We added a few sides to round out the meal, and the standout was the mushroom dish--can't recall the exact name, but it was excellent. I even snapped a picture of it because it was that good. Service was friendly and attentive throughout. We also enjoyed a couple of adult beverages; their Old Fashioned was solid (though I'll admit, not quite as good as mine!). All in all, a fantastic evening with great food, great service, and a cozy outdoor setup that let us dine al fresco late in the year. The blue crab deviled eggs were a 8/10 for me. Super stuffed but lacking in flavor. Although my ribeye was delicious, the other two people i dined with had their steaks WAY undercooked and couldn't eat the majority of it. Because our server didn't come back and check right away, we didn't even have the opportunity to send the food back so we tried to salvage dinner with dessert. The ice cream cake was nostalgic but nothing special. The buttermilk pie was an 8/10 lacking in flavor as well. Came here after a night around Union Market and our party was SO please with the experience. I referred to yelp for menu suggestions so we got the buttermilk biscuits and they were as good as they look. They are fluffy and delicious and the pimento cheese is to die for. The rest of our menu items were just as good. Everyone was so happy with their orders. On our last night in town before flying back home to sunny Southern California, your favorite Yelp Correspondent and his smoking hot wifey chose St. Anselm for our capstone meal of our four day, three night stay in WDC. But based on the slow, glacially paced service and overpriced foods served strictly a la carte, the St. Anselm dining experience left us wishing we were (St.) Elsewhere! We started with the hallmark, oft-praised biscuits, which were suitably flaky and redolent of their buttermilk essence...but when paired with the pimento cheese, you wind up with savory on top of dry, which produces an overly dryer than the Mojave mouthful. Call us unsophisticated rubes, but we both thought the biscuits would've paired better with a sweeter counterpart such as rasberry jam or apple butter. My wife's and my entrees gave us a jarring lesson in portion sizes. We expected her $24 salmon collar to be a petite-sized cut of fresh Atlantic salmon; similarly, we'd estimated my $37 Butcher's Steak to be a somewhat sizable cut of steak. Imagine our stupefaction to find her salmon easily dwarfed my six-bite section of steak!! For a side, we shared the garlic mashed potatoes, which are then pan-fried in bacon grease. Unctuous and extremely filling! Pro Tip- Don't waste your time ordering soda from St. Anselm, because they are quite penurious in how they apportion it- My Diet Coke was brought to me in a tiny 6oz bottle, literally a HALF CAN, for which I was charged a stiff $4. Our server Christian was nice enough, but candidly we were disappointed that it took 25 mins for our drink orders and another 50 minutes for our entrees to arrive. WED night dinner service, even at a buzzy, trendy restaurant such as St. Anselm shouldn't take two hours. read more

Wow! The best meal I've had in a long time in this area, the lamb leg steak with the not chimichurri sauce but very similar to it was amazing, so flavorful def a must have. Everything had so much depth in regard to the taste, even the roasted sweet potato which is a basic dish tasted elevated.
