Bobo Chicken and pan fried mashed potatoes
    Michelle B.

Came last on a Friday, they were able to seat us with no problem. Got the chicken, grilled okra and pan fried mashed potatoes. I wasn't really impressed with the new recipe for the Bobo chicken however the grilled okra and mashed potatoes didn't disappoint. Our waiter also let us try a Madeira to go with the peach crumble. It was a perfect compliment. I love this place, not just for the food but the great customer service each and everytime

Have you ever had a server make your whole night? Abby was that person and more! Her thoughtful suggestions, jokes, and kindness put my birthday celebration over the top! What's more- with just a couple of questions, she was able to pick a perfect wine pairing for me. In addition to the exceptional service, there was stellar food to enjoy ! Everything we ate from the famed biscuits to the deviled eggs to the steaks impressed. I found myself wishing I lived closer so I could get those biscuits on my way home everyday! We sat in a cute curtained booth that felt luxe and comfortable. For the price, St. Anselm is one heck of a restaurant. Glad I got to celebrate there.

WOWZA!!! We went to a special event: "Crawfish Broil" at St. Anselm on an early Sunday afternoon. The theme was featured on Resy and I'm so glad that we got tickets to this event. The decoration was the cutest. We were the first to arrive and had our assigned area with our names written on the table. All of the fixings were also ready hand wipes, lemon, remoulade, homemade hot sauce, Cajun garlic butter, and a bucket of course. We started with the best biscuit I've ever had with pimento cheese. The biscuit was fresh, hot, buttery and flaky and came with fresh pimento cheese. When I tell you they had me at biscuit, the biscuit alone is worth another trip. It was so fantastic we got some to go with their special jam. The crawfish came with a little guide to tell you how to open them (and a cracker if needed). We were fortunate to have two ladies from New Orleans at our table who were able to offer some guidance. The feast was brought out in large metal bowls by a team (including the chef) and it was all great. Crawfish, corn, sausage, shrimp and mussels. The portions were large and plentiful with drinks offered à la Carte. I didn't love my first drink so I switched to a Hugo spritz and my partner had the Hemingway daquiri. After 2 pours/portions of the crawfish boil we were tapped out. Our table mates ordered another round of biscuits and gave us a piece to dip in the butter and I melted again. Everything was so good! Also the staff was outstanding they were so accommodating and friendly. We will definitely be returning to St. Anselm soon for another meal.

Finally got to check out St. Anselm and it did not disappoint! It's a cool vibe for dinner with friends or even a date night. The staff are super attentive to everything going on. They made sure to keep our table clean and gave us new silverware and plates before or entrees arrived. Any food that we did not finish was boxed up and put into bags for us. The manager was actively walking around the restaurant, making sure that every guest were enjoying their dinner. The food was good all around but there are some dishes that outshine the rest. The ribeye and New York strip were very good. The butchers steak I got for my son and he didn't really like it, it was lacking flavor. If you do anything when you go, please make sure to get the biscuits. Hands down THE BEST BISCUITS I've ever had lol. They are the most flaky and buttery biscuits, you can count each layer that these have. Pro tip is to ask for butter and the house made jam. The pimento cheese is good with them but it becomes a little too decadent. Overall I'm happy we made the decision to come here, we will be back soon.

For what it is: *Food is good *Service is also good, but my aunts had to educate our waiter on what the term "dirty rocks" meant when it comes to a martini, but he gave us good food suggestions. *Atmosphere screams date night I had the lamb which I have had very few times. I only order it when I think the restaurant can live up to its reviews. I am happy with my selection and was very tasty. I shared small bites with the family and they liked it to. My aunt ordered the Bobo Chicken, THAT is something that should be ordered if you come. What a bite! Tried some steak and really didn't wow me like the chicken, good though. Overall 4-5, I had a very good meal elsewhere earlier in the week so this didn't quite do it for me, but would still recommend coming.

Everything was really good! Started with the blue crab deviled eggs and beef tartare, then had the ax handle ribeye. Everything was flavorful and well prepared. Finished with an espresso martini--great meal all around! Had a nice dark inside and customer service was amazing.

We ordered the biscuits, oysters, pan fried mashed potatoes, and butcher's steak with a half bottle of their chateau de fleurie. Everything was delicious and I would order it again. We ordered the steak medium rare and it came closer to rare. Restaurant was busy at 7:30pm on a thursday. I recommend making a reservation. It was a bit loud. Service was amazing and so sweet!

Man, places like this need to duplicate as much as they can. St. Anselm did not disappoint from start to finish! I was a solo diner for this experience and sat at the bar. The bartenders were friendly, filled waters promptly and were fast. I came in about 5pm on a Saturday and there were only 5-6 other people at the bar, but the dining area was pretty full. This place has an almost pioneer-ish vibe with all of the taxidermy on the walls mixed with like your Uncle's cabin in the woods in the 60s. I was digging it. I started with the buttermilk biscuits and pimento cheese. Wow. I could have eaten all of them. The bartender and I agreed that it wasn't a good idea. He said he did it once. I also had a mint julep, and while I normally like them, this one was a little different. The presentation was cool, but the drink was all ice, which was disappointing. For dinner I had the Butcher's Steak, medium well (should have gotten medium) and the Brussels sprouts. I'm thinking about the leftovers now. The folks next to me ordered my exact meal because it looked so good. I will indeed return! Thanks, St. Anselm!

Salmon collar- good if you are ok with picking bones

Great time at St Anselm! My friend and I tried a number of dishes and everything was tasty. Started with the famous buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese as well as butter/jam and the blue crab deviled eggs. My main was the salmon collar with a side of broccoli, my friend ordered the butcher's steak with side of carrots. Portions for the sides were enormous so we should have looked at pics beforehand. Ambience was very cool- we sat at the chef counter since it was just two of us but there was little interaction with the chefs so probably a regular table would have been better. Our waiter was really nice. He had a lot of tables and we didn't see him for a while but I suspect he was letting us chat. Overall dinner was very good and I would come back to try so other stuff.

Very popular restaurant with a lively vibe. The Ax bone-in ribeye, which is their specialty, was very tasty. The buttermilk biscuits are the best...don't miss them. Service was also excellent.

Another angle of the blue crab deviled eggs

Great location inside Union Market in NE DC, and major bonus, I lucked up with a PRIME parking spot right in front. Not sure about a garage nearby though. We pulled up right after "BEAT THE BOMB" as part of my friend's birthday celebration. There were 7 of us and we were STARVING. We came during that awkward brunch to dinner transition, but shoutout to them for still letting us order from the appetizer and transition menu because we needed options. Jackson was our server, and he was super nice and accommodating the whole time. Food wise, I got the blue crab deviled eggs to start and wow, so good. My friends were obsessed with the biscuits, like truly raving. I tried them and I didn't quite get the hype, but hey... For entrées, we had a mix of steak, branzino, salmon, and pot pie. My steak was cooked right, flavorful. I also tasted the branzino and that was also a hit. Both were really, really good. Now, mixed reviews from the group: -Salmon was just okay -Pot pie was a no, too salty, but my friend loved the Caesar salad -Brussels sprouts were elite, one of the best I've had, no exaggeration. -I also had the steamed broccoli, simple but good. So overall for me, I enjoyed my food. But as a group, it was kind of split, some hits, some just okay. Now let's talk about the space. The decor was honestly my least favorite part. It felt dated and the chairs we were sitting in were a little questionable, not the stability I expected, lol. I lowkey got stuck in the bathroom stall :( I had to "shimmy" out of the door. It really looked like a scene from a comedy TV show. No bueno!!!! When we first got there it was pretty empty, but by the time we were leaving it had filled up, which does say something about the food and popularity. Final verdict, good food overall with some standout dishes, but not super consistent across the board.

While visiting DC for work, I craved the best steak in the area. A few places popped up, but this place caught my attention based on reviews, photos, and the time it would take me to get there from the metro. Coming from the Navy Yard it was about a 10-15 train ride with a short 5 minute walk to the restaurant. The restaurant gave "high class" but with affordable prices. Almost like an upscale bar if that makes sense. The gentleman who waited on me was very attentive and gave one major recommendation, I needed to get their buttermilk biscuits. So, of course I did. They were huge, fresh, and delicious. They do come with a pimento cheese but I was not a fan so I used butter. Either way they were great. I for my entree I got the prime ribeye paired with the pan fried mashed potatoes. It was a lot of food but I had no steak left over to take back to my hotel. I finished my meal with the rainbow sherbet. I spent just about $80 and it was well worth it. The side was large and honestly I could've done without. Not because they weren't good but my steak was just that good without. I will be visiting again.

St. Anselm Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - St. Anselm

What is the dress code do you wear fancy casual?

You can wear whatever you like. No judgements.

What is the outside like? They only have outdoor seating for most of their reservations but it's winter lol?

The outdoor set up is just tables outside I didn't see any heaters? I wouldn't sit outside in the cold

Is this kid friendly? I have a 1 yr old and an 11 yr old.

The restaurant itself is not un-friendly towards kids, but I would check out the menu to see if there are things that your kids would like to eat. We have a 9 and 12 year old and though we LOVED the food, we didn't think it would fit our 9 year…

Do they have outdoor heaters on the patio?

    Yes they do.

Are masks required at the table you're sitting at ? Or just to get around the restaurant?

They are not required while sitting at the table eating. They are required moving through out the restaurant and going to the restrooms o

    What is their corkage fee?

$25 per bottle, and the bottle can't be on their list (it's posted online)

Is this kid friendly for lunch or an early dinner?

Yes! The music can be a little loud but it is accepting of families

    Do you have happy hour?

No, no happy hour. But the bar opens at 4pm (an hour before dinner service) and stays open between brunch and dinner on weekends (3-5pm).

    Is there valet parking?

Nope. But there is ample free parking in and around the Union Market District area.

    Are there high chairs?

    Yes

How is the noise level at St. Anselms? Looking for a relaxed birthday dinner for 5 folks, one with hearing issues.

I went Friday for dinner and it was LOUD. Lol

What made this visit especially satisfying was seeing my wife finally experience the level of hospitality I had been telling her about all these years. She walked away impressed, and so did I. I originally booked Omakase room by Tadayoshi for August 15th dinner at 5:30. To my shock it turned out Omakase room is closed that day but my reservation was still active and I confirmed it as well the day before. My husband wanted to try this Omakase place for a while and I thought the day was perfect for it. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed and I was taken by surprise as I didn't have any alternative plans or reservations. We first spoke with General manager at Boucherie and she kindly offered us to take a look at the menu and see if we wanted to dine there instead. I was very upset that the planned and anticipated reservation didn't work out. I said yes at first because I didn't know what else to do but we got an amazing server Revo who lightened the mood and Manager Michael was very kind to us and understanding. While dinner started not on a great note, it ended up the best outcome we could have had. Everyone we interacted with was kind and great. I would love to come back again but now specifically for Boucherie and in a much better mood. I totally understand that reservation issue is not Boucherie's responsibility and I still don't know how this all happened. But we hey made our anniversary dinner a fanatic experience. Many thanks to them and also to the sommelier. Wine list was great and we received great recommendations. Thank you, Boucherie team for everything, I was ready to start crying at the omakase room after seeing it was closed but now I will be back specifically for you and the great food. This was such an odd dining experience; I think I had a good time but it was so strange…read more My husband and I happened upon La Grande Boucherie after we were deterred from our original dinner plans. We arrived at 7:45 on a Saturday night to see if there was room for two or at least room at the bar. I wish the hostess had told us that we could wait at the bar for a table to open up, as we saw that's what many other patrons did, but she told us there was bar seating and high tops and so my husband and I went on up. We easily had our choice of two seats at the bar or a high top, and we selected a high top. After 5 minutes of no one acknowledging us, my husband and I told each other we would wait two more minutes before we would bail. Right as we were about to jump ship, a server came by and asked if we wanted menus. We said sure but it was just strange that no one greeted us, it was just "you want menus?" Lol. Another server brought us menus and asked if we would like water and a breadbasket. We said yes and after about 15 minutes, bread arrived. We chatted with the server about what drinks we should order; I ordered a French 75 and my husband ordered a special Sazerac. We also ordered the tuna carpoacio. After about 10 minutes, the server came back and to confirm if I wanted the soft side cocktail and if my husband wanted an old fashioned. We said we did not and corrected him. Then, a server tried to give our drinks to the table next to us and our server corrected him and brought steak tartare. And then he goes "oh wait, did you order this?" We said no and he asked if we wanted it because if not he had to throw it away lol. And then 5 seconds later, the tuna came. Both the tuna carpaccio and the steak tartare were delicious. But this was the entire evening: we ordered something, something else came. I ordered a glass of sparkling rose, and an espresso martini appeared on the house. We had to ask for our bill twice and when we got our bill, it was definitely someone else's. Finally, as we were preparing to go, the original server comes back and goes "here's your espresso martini." Like bro we asked you originally for the check and we are clearly leaving. Luckily, my husband and I had plenty of time before our show, it was a great atmosphere, and the food was super delicious. It was just such a comically bizarre experience and I feel like they are definitely losing money. I think we paid for half of what we ate and drank and probably ate and drank other people's food! Maybe we will go back? Maybe not lol

I found myself at Mastro's for a work dinner while in the DC area for a conference. Steakhouses are…read morethe favorite for networking and educational dinners in my world - and even though there's a location in NYC, I had never heard of the chain before. That being said, I was curious to see how it stacked against other steakhouse chains - so off we went. Mastro's gives off similar vibes to other steakhouses I've been to - the interior is dark, with over the top finishes and an overall masculine aesthetic. We were seated in the main dining room - it wasn't too large, though I'm not sure if there were other rooms. There were no real surprises on the menu, though I noticed they had a good selection of wagyu cuts from the US, Australia, and Japan. We decided to start with drinks and then some apps - namely, the wagyu roll, house salad, crab cake, and seafood tower. There was no question the seafood tower was the biggest showstopper. We were able to choose which seafood to put on it, and it came adorned with dry ice for that dramatic effect. To top it off, they even flashed strobe lights against it when presenting to make it extra Instagram ready. The seafood itself was delicious, and the other apps were good as well. My only critique of the apps was the house salad - they were too heavy handed with the dressing, it would have been better if it was dressed sparingly. While the wagyu was tempting, I went with the filet for my main. The beef was cooked well (not well done), and topped with an herb compound butter which really added to the meat. We also ordered sides of broccolini, lobster mashed potatoes, and lobster mac and cheese. These were all good, though I don't find the existence of lobster mash necessary; lobster mac and cheese is enough. We finished with dessert - chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate layer cake, their signature butter cake, and cheesecake. Dare I say the chocolate covered strawberries were the best? The chocolate coating was more of a spread so it didn't fall off at first bite, and it came with whipped cream mmm. It might have been because the fruit was a repreive from the relatively heavy meal, but it was a standout for me. Though the butter and chocolate cakes were also delicious I'll call a spade a spade. Service was great - they were very attentive and consistenly made sure we were taken care of. Overall, I wouldn't say Mastro's was the best steakhouse I've been to, but they hold their own. I don't know if they're on the same level as other chains, but I wouldn't be mad if circumstances found me here again in the future.

At one point, he came to our table and explained that there were other people celebrating their birthdays and that he was busy attending to them. I understand that restaurants get busy, but telling a customer that other birthday celebrations are taking priority is not appropriate. He knew it was my birthday as well and even apologized for "ruining" it by mentioning this. It was an incredibly strange way to address his lack of attentiveness. When our food arrived, the server did not promptly come to plate our food. We eventually plated it ourselves, and only afterward did he come over and say that he had been planning to come plate it for us. At that point, the service had already been missed. There were also multiple staff members assisting with service, which made the lack of coordination even more noticeable. The kitchen was quite slow as well, and the garlic mashed potatoes were cold by the time we were eating our steaks. There were also clumps of mashed potatoes left on the table, which our server picked up with his bare hands. These may sound like small details individually, but together they made the service feel surprisingly ordinary for the setting. The food itself was the highlight. The filet was very well seasoned, the garlic mashed potatoes were excellent despite the temperature issue, and the signature warm butter cake with ice cream was phenomenal. My dining companion said his filet was the best filet he had ever had. I also found the dress-code enforcement somewhat inconsistent. I had made an effort to dress appropriately for the occasion, and my dining companion did as well, but I noticed another guest being admitted in denim shorts. My dining companion independently commented on how people were dressed, so this wasn't something I was looking for--it was simply noticeable. Ultimately, I would return for the food, but I hope the service is substantially better next time. This was my birthday dinner, and unfortunately the service did not make the occasion feel particularly special.

I did wish they gave a little more time between the bread/salad course and the main course, since I didn't have enough time to finish my salad. The sauce is delicious and the fries were nice and crispy. Wish dessert came with the meal for that price. The steak is definitely very low quality -- there were so many pieces that were too tough for me to even cut, let alone eat. Since they give you an extra serving, I had enough steak to eat, but it just felt like such a waste to have this giant pile of inedible steak on my plate. There was probably 3/4 of a serving of steak that wasn't so tough it was inedible, so might not have been enough of a serving for others.

Their outdoor patio is my favorite spot to be seated albeit they pack the tables like sardines. The steak frites with the peppercorn sauce is a must try. I'm not even a steak person, but as a saucy person, I love for this meal. The French toast is also crispy on the outside, yet soft and moist internally. It's the perfect balance of textures.

I started at the bar while awaiting the rest of my party. I enjoyed a glass of brut rose and complimentary popcorn. The popcorn is nothing short of amazing! I ordered the Lobster Linguine, perfectly seasoned and flavorful. Goodness! I then indulged in an espresso martini which rounded out the perfect dinner. I cannot wait to return.

I had an opportunity to introduce some and reacquaint others with why OCEAN PRIME is one of the best restaurants for service, food, and cocktails. When we arrived, not only did we have an amazing greeting from staff who gave us every impression that we were the most important people in the restaurant. Our server was beyond top-notch. Tiana set the standard for how a server should engage thoughtfully and helpfully. We had the iconic berries and bubbles, black, orchid cocktails, glasses of wine, and, of course, the goat cheese ravioli. For main entrées, we had an amazing special of lobster and scallop risotto, and Ribeye steaks, both Oscar-style and plain. Our side items were the jalapeño, gratin, potatoes, lobster, mac & cheese, brussels sprouts, and broccoli. The pace of service was perfect. We had plenty of time to enjoy the cocktails, appetizers, and dinner. The food came out extremely well seasoned, hot, and to everyone's liking. The general manager, Tim, took time to come by the table to make sure everything was going well and really put the icing on the cake by ensuring our entire experience lived up to the Cameron Mitchell brand. Truly, a night to remember
