Ok so I was reluctant to rate this Bc I don't want all of you yelpers invading my 'hood gems. Alas I share. Ok so my BF told me his friend alleged these were the best tacos in all of Astoria...I fucking LOVE tacos so I was curious. I had just come home from one hell of a day at work & was starving, remembered this deli & figured I'd give it a whirl. I order a quesadilla, 2 tacos & some nachos. Are you judging me? I just had a stressful day & was hungry ok!! Anyways, I waited an hour & 45 minutes for my delivery then realized JESUS whaaaat are these people doing?!? Called, expressed my confusion as to why my meal had not been delivered yet..she told me the driver was leaving soon...mmmk, we'll see. 30 minutes later I had my food. The quesadilla is indeed taco like & more delicious than any other quesadilla I've had. Would re-order. If you're looking for a true 2 soft shells melted together with gooey cheese & some type of meat, do not order a quesadilla here you will be very confused & will call & complain that you did not receive your quesadilla. If you're open to a pseudo taco "quesadilla" order up! It's yummy. Smother it in creamy green sauce, thaaaaaat stuff is crack!! Now the tacos, they were dry as hell. Meat was so dry it tasted like beef jerky. Not good. Nachos were very sub par but hey they weren't on the menu & the cook helped me out so beggars can't be choosers. So...best tacos in Astoria? nah. Hidden gem. It works out of a corner deli yet it remains the best tacos I've ever had. And affordable. For 10 bucks you will get a feast: Three heavily loaded tacos and a quesadilla. The tacos cesina (salted steak) and chicarron are the best but all of them rock. Each taco is stuffed with lettuce, tomatos, onions, loads of queso blanco, salsa. But ask for extra green cream sauce. Simpy put, their quesadilla is the crispy taco! We visited friends in the neighborhood who suggested ordering tacos and quesadillas from St. James Deli. I was quite amused albeit skeptical, when they told me that they can get cigarettes, beer, grocery items and tacos delivered by St. James Deli at 3 in the morning and that the tacos and quesadillas are delicious. When our food arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that the tacos crujiente (crispy) overflowed with fresh avocados and queso. It was really delicious! I still couldn't believe it so when we passed by this place I ordered the same thing but this time it was a miss. So, I gave it another try and this time, they got it right. This place is pretty interesting. It resembles a regular run-of-the-mill deli however, they seem to have a pretty interesting menu of typical Mexican eats such as racks, Torres, flautas and burritos. The tacos are decently priced at $2.50 a pop and this isn't a sit down place - but perhaps they're decently sized. Yelp reviews seem great for this place but I walked in tonight and stood in front of their ordering station for over 5 minutes. There was an older guy in the store that kept checking me out, smiling but didn't offer to help so I assume he was just a weird customer. Another guy was by the beers and just standing there also smiling at me. I shouldn't have to declare that I'm there to spend money - but considering that no one was by the register, behind the food counter and the employees here preferred checking me out rather than asking if I needed help, I decided to walk out and spend my money elsewhere. read more

Tucked in the back of what appears to be your average corner bodega, resides Astoria's best taco stand. St. James Deli does not look like much, but it is a true HIDDEN gem. Easy on the pocketbook, taco prices range from $2.25 and $3.75. In a neighborhood where things are becoming less and less affordable, prices like these for quality bites are more than welcome. The menu - choices, choices, choices! The adventurous and non-adventurous eaters can find common ground here (yea!) There are many choices for fillings, pork, chicken, steak, even cactus. The Al Pastor (roasted pork) and Cecina (salted beef) seemed to be our group's favorites, there was also a small shout out for the chorizo con huevos - it's on my list for next time. Tip for ordering: take the advice of every Yelper review and make sure to get the creamy green sauce (dill....really surprising, and really really good!!) on everything. It rounds out the whole taco experience really nicely. I personally liked the dill sauce most out of everything we tasted last night. If you're not a sauce person ask for it on the side so that you can at least try it. It really should not be missed. There is no dining space here, so orders are take out. I did overhear that they will deliver with a minimum purchase of $10, but please don't quote me on that. Our tacos took a while to dish up, we ordered a a large selection and quantity, so we roamed around the deli to see what else we might like to purchase with our dinner. St. James has a surprisingly large selection of sweets, drinks, chips, salsas, etc, to purchase outside of the tacos. We ended up with a few bottles of fun-flavored Jarritos sodas and spicy chips to accompany our delicious order of tacos. One of the chip flavors ended up tasting like dryer sheets -wish I could remember the brand so I could help you steer clear of them, but they were edible when dipped in the creamy green sauce from the tacos. St. James closed for about 3 months and my roommate and I checked back almost every single day to see what was going on. HAVE NO FEAR! ST JAMES IS BACK!! (and newly renovated). Not only does it have some of the best tacos I've ever had, don't knock the chicken cutlet sandwich! Ask for it on a hero and man do you get your money's worth! Just wanted an average ham and cheese deli sandwich. Lady at the counter misheard my order like 2-3 times and I started to get a bit impatient. My biggest problem is that they made my sandwich without gloves, hairnet, nada. Everything is done at the wooden table and it just felt like an unclean, sloppy job. Paid 5 bucks for a sandwich with 2 slices of ham and 1 slice of cheese. C'mon if you don't know what I was ordering just ask. If you still don't know just flat out tell me so I can order something else. I won't come back no matter how good their Mexican food may be, simply because of their ineptitude and concerns over their bare-hand contacts with foods. An unassuming bodega open 24/7 that has the best Mexican food in Queens, some might argue the city. I'm a simple man, and when I find myself with a crumbled up ten dollar bill I found in the laundry, this is where I'll probably be. A nice spot for tacos and quesadillas. The cecina and chorizo are decent. But this place is definitely not 24 hours; I've been there a few times and the place has been closed wank wank wankkkk. They change their prices on the fly and prices are mislabeled not a good look. The staff is not friendly and need a lot of friendly dust as they don't provide much too none of it. Service is very very slow it's like they don't care about getting the food out in a timely manner; it's more like give me your credit card and wait B.I.T.C.H. Your food is not that great it's decent at best. Get your shit together and maybe just maybe I'll be back. I doubt it !!! You get three stars for the avocado sauce; it's not salsa verde people. I walked 5 long blocks one lunch break after reading all the 5 star reviews to try these tacos. Really disappointed. Ordered carnitas tacos and a side of rice & beans (a staple elsewhere but not on the menu here) The carnitas "chunks" were warm on the outside and noticeably cold on the inside, not very flavorful.. and they weren't busy, I was the only one eating in the deli..the side of rice and beans ended up costing me $4.50 "gringo price" which was a little high when my tacos were $2.50/each. I really don't understand why this place has such good reviews. Its really just a sub par Mexican deli. I'd say that everyone who loves this place probably loved Taco Bell before they came here. read more
