Almost 20 years ago, I received a Stacks in Burlingame gift certificate for $20 from a kind family from a school I used to work at, and I unfortunately just never got the chance to go. Yesterday, there was a welcome break in the rain, and it was the first sunny day in the Bay Area that we've seen in a long time. On a whim, I took my wife to Stacks in Burlingame, excited to finally try their food and to finally use up the gift certificate. They seated us right away, got there on a Sunday morning at 9:30 am, despite it being fairly busy. Just in case, I told the server ahead of time about our gift certificate and that it was an older one from a long time ago (December 2004!). He took the gift certificate and said he'd have to ask his manager to make sure first. We sat down at our table, and in a moment, the server and the manager both came out. The manager very dismissively and rudely shouted at us, "That's not one of mine, it's no good," and walked off. The server said, "It's not good because it's a copy." I said, "This is not a copy. This is what the family gave to me. There is clearly pen ink writing on it. It's signed by the manager, who might not work here anymore, but it's signed by him." The server said, "Um, sorry, he said it's a copy." Disappointed and offended by the way the manager treated us, I took the gift certificate back and said, "Okay," and my wife and I both stood up and left. This is more a review of the manager and his complete lack of hospitality and understanding as opposed to the food. I'm sure the food is tasty here from what friends have told me, but I really did not appreciate being dismissed and rudely accused of making/bringing a copy of a gift certificate. I understand it was from a long time ago and that it's a different manager, but I thought that California has that law where gift certificates/cards cannot expire. Also, there was very clearly different colored ink filling out the names, date given, dollar amount, as well as the manager's signature. If I was truly trying to swindle a restaurant, do you really think I'd do it for a paltry $20? In 2004, that could've gotten us breakfast for 2, but that morning I was more than happy using the $20 gift certificate to pay for just part of the meal and I'll pay the rest. I understand Sunday brunch can be stressful with lots of people coming in and out and food orders going in and out of the kitchen, but as a restaurant manager, you're in the food and hospitality business. Manager of Stacks in Burlingame, you were definitely not hospitable to my wife and I with your rude and dismissive tone of voice. We will not be coming to Stacks in Burlingame to eat, and it's unfortunate because you lost a couple of potential customers that could've been repeat customers to help support your business. read more

Stacks has been a staple breakfast spot since I was a child. My family would go for brunches, casual get together, or just a morning meal. My go to's are a skillet (all of them are good) with over easy eggs for savory breakfast. And I MUST get the banana wheat germ pancakes as a sweet every time I go! read more

This place is special. You can't help but notice it as you walk by. It has plants outside; people are enjoying their breakfast and brunch. One thing you'll see right away: the menu is vast. It's a small book. They have your classic breakfast and brunch items. We shared a vegetable crepe, and it was just right. We also saw something so odd; we had to try it: carnitas pancakes. It reminded me of the flavors of chicken and waffles. Sweet syrup over savory carnitas. It was excellent. They leave a carafe of coffee on your table and water, so you can get your chemistry right if you're a cream and sugar person. The service was friendly, and given how busy they were, the food came out quickly. This place has its act down pat. I look forward to trying more items on their menu. read more

Are you in San Fran and in search of an *amazing* breakfast spot?? Well, STACKS IS WHERE IT'S AT!! Depending on the time, day and number in your party when you visit, there could be a short wait but whatever the situation it is 100% WORTH IT! You'll find this gem situated charmingly on the corner of a roundabout and nestled near a fun strip of shops and restaurants. The train station and tracks is directly across the street so you'll hear the trains pass often. Street parking is key as there is no private lot but there is plenty of stalls across the street. Check in with the hostess that you will find to your right upon entering the establishment. They typically get pretty busy and the hostess is often hidden behind a waiting party. This place does pancakes HUGE... like MONUMENTAL! If you stop by on a Friday, order three raspberry pancakes (as they only serve them on Fridays... of course). I personally most enjoyed the different versions of eggs Benedict that they offer. Eggs Blackstone, to be exact, was my favourite! Poached eggs, bacon and mushrooms on an English muffin smothered in hollandaise sauce! Oh my! Their hollandaise sauce is phenomenal! Not too runny and not too thick! Everything was seasoned wonderfully! The kids menu is very good, too, if you are visiting with children. The children's menu consists of quite a few items that most appeal to kiddos including minnie and Mickey mouse pancakes! Super cute! Pro tip: the short stack is enough!!!! Came for a brunch on friday, and sat outdoors! We ordered the Banana, macadamia nut, and coconut pancakes, huevos rancheros, and some drinks. The food tasted great! This place is very lively and busy. We came for Sunday brunch and had a good experience. The servers are very nice and we got seated right away without a reservation. The brunch spots are hopping' in downtown Burlingame especially on Sunday mornings. My daughter and I hit up a one week delayed Mother's Day brunch and shared a full stack of the banana coconut macadamia nut pancakes. I love pancakes with texture! They were a touch on the dry side but with maple syrup we ate almost every bit. She also got two scrambled eggs which don't come seasoned at all - there is salt and pepper at the table. The coffee is solid diner coffee, and they give you a whole pot for easy refills. I also got the crab crepe which has avocado and hollandaise - super tasty and full of crab. I try not to judge brunch spots exclusively on their fried potatoes but Stacks puts up a solid effort on theirs! The food here is amazing! The pancakes are fluffy, light, moist, thick and delicious. The omelets have great flavor and are perfectly cooked. The piece de resistance is the seasoning for the hash. It's flavor is not to salty or underwhelming but a good balance of spices that goes beyond salt. I was in a rush and rushed my group because I had a flight to catch. Victor was able to seat us on a grand table and even took the time to talk with us and connect. The service staff were very busy so it took a while to have someone check in but that's expected. The only factor for the four stars is $2 for a pay of cream cheese. If bagels are the bread of choice for each plate, cream cheese is the natural go to, not the jam. read more

The best I can say is they're trying their best, working truly hard, giving it their all ... with a smile, and then some. But the food for dinner? Barely edible. Serviceable and not intrinsically bad, but geez if our dishes had any flavor whatsoever, I missed it. Or my tongue lacks receptors. Their panini I had a couple of bites and thought it more work to chew. The chicken pot pie the most bland sorry excuse of filling I've ever had. A frozen Banquet brand would've been better, that's how low the bar. The best thing about that "meal" was their carrot cake, so I left on a sugar high, not what I needed. Everything was lackluster. The staff, everyone from the hostess to both servers, so incredibly kind and friendly and sweet, going way out of their way to make sure we were okay. It's a shame because the interior is such a vibe, so quintessentially 80's on a lovely cheesy kinda way. I got a huge kick from their decor, they'd gone to a lot of trouble, not to mention, I think their patio is the best on the entire street. It's not a makeshift pavement seat which I detest, it's a true covered patio, lounging area, gorgeous. It should have better food. Maybe their lunch stuff is better? I'm hoping it is. Stacks is one of my favorite places for breakfast in the entire Bay Area. I used to come here quite often with old friends and recently started coming back with new ones. The restaurant itself is charming. It feels like it is made just for you to enjoy breakfast and brunch. There's plenty of outdoor seating under umbrellas for you to enjoy the generally nice weather in Burlingame. Inside, it feels airy and comfortable. I've always loved their skillets and it's nice to see that it hasn't changed. A nice two or three egg with hash browns and sausage always hits the spot too. When you order coffee, it comes in a coffee carafe so that you can refill your own as to not need to flag down a server. When you're enjoying your meal and talking with your party, you sometimes don't want to be bothered and having the coffee right there is convenient. There are a lot of brunch places out there, but only a few I truly enjoy going to. Stacks is one of those places. read more

The location is in a nice spot and we enjoyed the outdoor seating area, although it is near light traffic depending on where you're seated. Not a deal breaker for us but my grandma is sensitive to noise and she had to switch seats to be more in the corner. The service was relatively quick despite being busy and we all enjoyed our meal, though nothing was spectacular. Typical diner food you would expect but they had a huge menu with almost too many options. For brunch, this is definitely a very solid option. read more

Stacks has the best French toast! It's a great spot for brunch if you've got some time to set aside. It's pretty busy and a bit crowded, but when the weather is nice there are tons of tables outside. The menu has a wide selection of food - there's something for everyone. Pro tip: if you've got a party of six or more you can make a reservation. Had Sunday brunch here with my cousin. Upon arriving you can see there was going to be a wait so I figured we were in for a treat. The service is great. The food is great, but this is a breakfast restaurant, so you have to send out hot plates. I worked in restaurants for 23 years. If you send out hot food on a cold plate, the food becomes cold in a couple minutes. put your plates in an unused oven and keep them at 120°. What do you do after working out at Basecamp? You waddle down the street to have an oversized brunch at Stacks! We ordered the banana walnut waffle and chicken sausage omelet. I thought the waffle crispy edges and cake texture were great and reminded me why it's nice to have waffles at restaurants. I did not really like the omelet though - there's tons of chicken sausage but I thought the cheese was too lumpy in certain parts so you just had large bites of cheese. The breakfast potatoes were underwhelming - just kind of soggy and not well flavored. And if you're still not full after having the omelet and potatoes, you can top off with the regular bagel and jam that they also give you. I would've given this place three stars if I had solely gotten the omelet, but my review was edged up by the waffle and fresh grapefruit juice. If you're looking for fluffy beautiful omelets, I recommend going to Los Gatos Cafe and Country Inn Cafe. read more

For a recent visit for dinner, we ordered Pot Roast and Bolognese Pasta. The bolognese sauce, an original recipe from the owner's mother, was succulent, indeed and truly delicious. The Pot Roast was literally jaw dropping with the most deliciously tender meat and gravy ever, served with perfect mashed potatoes, a destination dish, indeed, which now joining Stack's pancake breakfast as the best in the area. The continental atmosphere and service make Stacks a singularly unforgettable dining experience, can't wait to go back. So happy that this venerable "comfort food"breakfast/brunch spot in Burlingame is now serving dinner! On my initial visit, I had the pot roast, served on a bed of mashed potatoes. It was very flavorful and ultra melt-in-your-mouth tender. My partner had pasta with Bolognese sauce, which had a deep, rich, meaty flavor--obviously the product of cooking and simmering for hours. I understand the sauce is a recipe from the mother of Stacks's owner, and it shows--it's different (and better!) than other Bolognese sauces I've had at other restaurants. Burlingame has the most wonderful addition in dinner restaurants with the opening of Stacks for dinner. Most folks in the Bay Area are familiar with the amazing brunch, breakfast and lunch that Stacks has provided over the last 30 years. Now they bring that amazing culinary experience, service and atmosphere to the dinner scene. Last night I had the avocado generously stuffed with Dungeness crab and the home made clam chowder. All I can say is "lights out" WOW. My partner had the pork chop which looked like a T Bone and his sides of scalloped potatoes and house salad with home made dressing was incredible. They have an extensive wine and cocktail list as well as a few breakfast favorites like omelettes and pancakes for those so inclined but next time I want to try the homemade meat loaf or chicken pot pie. You will not walk away disappointed from Stacks for dinner. The quality of the food, service and atmosphere are top notch and your wallet will be happy to. A dinner here is about half the price of a well known high end national food chain and none of it is pre packaged from a chefs kitchen in Chicago- it's all made right under Stacks roof ! read more
