My uncle and I had a great time at Staks Kitchen! We sat at the bar, and Claire was so friendly and attentive. She made us feel welcome and took great care of us. I was able to make fun at Kareem and his pre-bussing skills! He was a good sport about the engagement. The food was good, the music was on point, and the whole place had a really nice vibe. I also tried the Rum Rise, or at least I think that was the name, and it was really good! I came too close to closing for another. I got the chicken and pancakes. The chicken was good but the pancakes were just ok. There definitely wasn't enough syrup but I figured I'd use what I had at home with the leftovers. The only issue was that the leftover pancakes really didn't taste that great the next day. They only tasted ok while I was eating them anyway. But my husband's strawberry shortcake pancakes were delicious. I would definitely get those again but not the plain pancakes. There were a lot of things I wanted to try so I know I'll be back a few more times to try them out! I seem to like their specialty pancakes the most so I'll definitely be trying more of those. We have been going here for years and we always go for Christmas Eve. This particular year was fine but honestly has been going down hill over the past few years. Place always use to be packed but now it's easy to get a table with service lacking. Decor is starting to become run down. The booth we were seated in right next to the kitchen was torn separating between which made seating interesting. My daughter asked for a cold latte and it came out hot and my son's soda never came even after asking about it. The breakfast eggs rolls use to be our favorite with the gravy but they must have went to a different frozen supplier or they haven't cleaned the grease because they were over cooked, soaked with grease and inedible with I am guessing was ranch because it definitely wasn't sausage gravy but something ice cold, watery and flavorless. All the other food was ok except for my croissant sandwich which had a rock hard croissant, my guess happened when it goes from frozen into the microwave to a rock hard piece of sausage that I couldn't cut. I was extremely disappointed today. Stak's has one of my favorite coffees the cafe brûlée and it came with no brûlée- no foam or caramelized sugar. I asked what about the sugar and she said she sprinkled it on top. Then I ordered 2 scrambled eggs and 1 pancake (which was supposed to be $2 on Tuesdays,today is 12/30). The pancake was cold, literally the butter wouldn't melt. My eggs were luke warm at best. When the server, Mullin G, returned I said the pancake was cold. She said she could heat it up. I said no thanks can you just take it off and she said that wasn't possible once the food hits the table. I've never heard this before.. I decided to take it home where I could warm it myself. My family and I went here on May 11th, 2024. The restaurant was very busy when we got there, so we had to wait a little bit on the wait list. Once we was notified that it was our turn to be serve the hotress told us what our table number was, and we went to the counter to order our foods. We ordered a variety of awesome food. When first entering we were greeted by a young lady that was very friendly and helpful. She explained the protocol-decide on what you would like to order for food and beverage, purchase your items and have a seat. The servers would find your number on the table and proceed to bring your food to the table when it was finished cooking. Service was fast and efficient. Everyone was nice and helpful. I had the breakfast burrito. It was filled with eggs, chiorzo, peppers, salsa, cheese, and wrapped in a tomato basil tortilla. It was quite yummy. My table mates had a variety of pancakes that we all tasted. We had the lemon ricotta, banana pudding, white chocolate espresso peppermint, cinnamon roll, gluten free sweet potato, and buttermilk. All the food was tasty. My niece had the Egg White platter and that looked pretty delicious as well. Coffee was good and strong. Arrgghh, not sure what it is, but you can tell many of the restaurants are cutting corners while increasing prices under the guise of inflation. STOP IT! For one person I was out of $27.13 & left over half of the food on the table. Pancakes $6.95, 2 eggs with cheese right at $4, Side of sausage $4.90, ( although menu price was less , I was charged more) , orange juice $3.95 - & I had the luxury of watching the cashier pour it out of a gallon jug from Kroger . Then I was billed a temporary inflation surcharge $1.97 & 15% tip- Once done almost was at $30. I have no idea why restaurants don't understand is that this only makes you not want to come back. Came here with a friend, July 31, as we've both never been and wanted to try their breakfast. We arrived at 10AM (I placed our names on their waitlist), checked in, and told that we would receive a text message when our table was ready. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits topped with a fried egg, spinach with water and a pineapple mimosa. The pancakes was just ok but the strawberries were fresh. They did give 2 syrups and it was needed as 1 would not have been enough. The omelette was tasteless even with the veggies in it. I had to add salt and pepper to even enjoy eating the omelette. Thankfully I had a side of salsa (which was good) to eat with the omelette. The chicken sausage tasted ok (nothing else to mention on that). The mimosa was good but the glass was fairly small for the amount you pay. My friend did not like the shrimp and grits as they were undercooked (I tasted and they were crunchy) and surrounded in a visible broth. The fried egg needed a little more time, as well, so she returned the meal, for another bowl (grits and eggs cooked longer), but was told that the meal would come out the EXACT same. She decided to order their BLT with a side of hash browns but instead of receiving their BLT on the menu, she received a PLAIN BLT.. just bacon, lettuce, and tomato. That sandwich tasted how it looked... SAD. She did enjoy her hash browns and mimosa, though. The "stuffed French toast" appeared to be donuts filled with some type of jam. Glazed croissants were similar to those that can be purchased at Walmart. It must have been sitting in the window. When it arrived, it was cold. Not just lukewarm but cold. The chicken sausage seemed right from the fridge. I sent those back to be warmed up. I've reviewed Staks on Poplar before, but it has been some time since I did that. I don't eat here but a couple times a year (I live a good 30min away). As I reported last time the food was excellent. This time I tried something new. A breakfast quesadilla with egg whites and chicken! I also ordered a side of hashbrowns. While the quality of food is very important, the staff and the service they provide is just as important! Every time I come here the staff is also excellent! They are friendly and always pleasant when one requests something and it wasn't just me. I observed them with others as well with the same great and pleasant service! Almost as important is what the staff does when they aren't interacting with customers. Their demeanor with each other was amazing to watch. Maybe it is just a good crew that just happens to get along well but there were easily 6-7 working this morning and not one seemed like they were in a foul mood. Further more, just like before, I witnessed these young people recognizing work to be done, such as wiping counters, helping their coworkers with bar and table prep and even deeper cleaning! I watched as CJ glanced at bar cabinets. She paused, grabbed a cleaning rag and spray and commenced to wipe the cabinet fronts. She didn't do a drive by wipe either! She hit every square inch of every door, detailed around every handle and hit the cabinet fronts again. I asked her if someone asked her to do that and she said, "I forgot to do it yesterday but no, nobody told me to do that." That is unusual not only in Memphis but just about anywhere else I go! Tade was an absolute work horse. He was the one running around restocking and really helping several of his coworkers nonstop while I was there. All that on top of his duties as coffee bar guy! My son loves the Red Velvet pancakes. So much so that he has been hounding me to make sure this five star review makes it lol. We went to Staks twice while we were in Memphis and everyone ordered different things both times. We all agree that pancakes are the ideal choice for a place called Staks. The one non pancake item that was a winner was a Philly cheesesteak sandwich that had a friend egg on top. The other non pancake items that we had fell into an "okay but would order again" bucket- the bayou bowl, the bbq omelet and the standard egg and meat breakfast. Not bad, but not great. All the pancakes were winners though (Except the Oreo cookie pancake because they accidentally gave my sister the pancake base for the Elvis pancakes which has bananas and my sister hates bananas). The plain pancakes, red velvet and chocolate chip were all good. The lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes were fantastic. All are good enough to eat without syrup. I actually liked the ordering system and getting the tables assigned at the register or just before you order.
