We were visiting Philly for 24 hours, wandering late on a Tuesday night after a concert. Practically all restaurants were closed. This place was open late and had food so didn't even hesitate to go in. We ended up ordering burgers and like 4 round of drinks! This place saved our night; the food was actually pretty good and their drinks were STRONG. They had a pool table so we ended up playing a few games (don't remember how many lol). Hands down one of the best upscale pubs in Philly. I used to live in the neighborhood and this was a go-to. Solid selection of beers and wine; solid mixed drinks; food is great. Can sometimes be meat-heavy, but there's always a few vegetarian and/or pescatarian options. There standards have even held up through the pandemic (not easy to do). read more

Some of it is really good, some is meh...Was here with three others and had the following items: Striped Bass ($28): Overall two in my party ordered the striped bass; one did not like it and had it replaced with a burger (which they agreed to do luckily). The other thought it was only OK. Including some type of side dish or a bit more on the side would be helpful to make people feel they got their money's worth. Chicken Pie ($16:) Was its usual normal self; very good with a bit of salad on the bottom. Very nice consistency and one of my favorite items on the menu. Gnocchi ($15 appetizer size): Gnocchi were very good; served in brown butter sauce and with some veggies. Enjoyed quite a bit. Two also ordered the standard burger and really liked it (one had original ordered roast chicken which was sold out); we also had a side order of Brussels sprouts that were good. You enter through a corner door constructed from wood, glass and what seem to be pipes that have been reconstructed for their unique purpose. While dimly lit you're greeted by a 10 seater bar, high-top seating and eccentric art. I'd say order the Smelts, Oysters, Chicken Potpie, Poutine Fries, Fries (in general), Burger. This last trip I didn't order any food, although they have a creatively unique menu for the seemingly regular, hipster dive bar feel they have. Pretty sure I saw them offering full Sea Bass ($60). I have admired Standard Tap from a distance for a while and had it on my Yelp bucket list. The food is delicious and I love the vibe! We were going to a show at the Punchline and the Standard Tap was the perfect spot to grab dinner. I ordered their house rose, which was a decent pour. I enjoyed my Kentucky BBQ Chicken sandwich, and my boyfriend liked the Fried Bluefish sandwich. We sat on the upper porch and it was so cute and cozy. I did not realize how large the whole restaurant is! It would make for great event space. Last but not least, our server, William, was awesome. He gave great recommendations and checked on us several times. Can't wait to visit again the next time I'm in the area! read more

This place has been on my list for quite sometime and I finally tried it. Happy hour from 4-6 is a good deal as the drinks otherwise are a little pricier. ~10-13$ a cocktail. Siesta by second - Tequila with grapefruit really good taste. Nice drink!!! Had to try the famous chicken pot pie...really good taste the puff was very fresh and fluffy, shredded chicken with carrots and mushroom was good too. Needed some Sriracha with it to add that extra flavor. The upstairs seating facing the street is a nice place to hangout. Overall good place but just found it a little expensive. read more

Got the fish and chips. Probably the worst I've had in my life. The fries were thin and soggy and cold while the fish was hot. The fish itself tasted like dishwater, but the crust was actually very good, flavorful and crunchy! We were just looking for a quick bite and decided to stop in. When we were seated the table we got was incredibly sticky; like old frat house basement sticky. We had someone's order brought to our table that wasn't ours. The burger was ok. Not anything special and it took 50 minutes to come out. We also got the pickle platter which was 5$ and not worth it; the pickled carrots on the platter were gross and soggy. Came here for drinks with a new friend, was very impressed with the selection of beers. Staff was very friendly and ensured that us at a high top stayed attended to even though the bar was quite filled. My wife and I split the chicken pie which was amazing! Oddly enough I saw Guy Fieri on food network talking about this delicious, flaky, buttery chicken pie not 2 days later. Highly recommend! The atmosphere is really cool, very old timey feel. Finally had a chance to come visit this bar over the weekend after kickball with the teammates. Very pleased with this low key chill neighborhood bar. Menu of the food and the drinks are above the bar. I personally recommend the summer shandy for $5. Other beer options are in the price range of $6-8 bucks. They also offer unique cocktails from $9-11 bucks. Quick service and you can never go wrong with a rooftop deck as well. Also, would recommend the BBQ pull porked sandwich as well. read more

A few years after leaving Philly, I returned for a visit and gained a new appreciation for this "neighborhood gem." When I lived in the city, I loved Standard Tap. It was a reliable standby: reasonable drinks, great food, good people. But now that I've been living in a wasteland for good food and drinks, a trip to Standard Tap was jaw-dropping. A neighborhood bar that hosts blue collar workers, hipsters, and seniors with equal respect. That serves a burger that is a step above any burger you'd had. That offers an amazing beer selection. You'll see construction workers and DJs enjoying duck confit salad or burgers. And it's just a normal Tuesday. Standard Tap reminds me of all that is good about Philadelphia. read more

For those who believe poor service doesn't affect ratings, I recommend they make a visit to Standard Tap. The place is great - awesome beer selections, good food, and decent location. They even has spots to eat outside on the upper level, meaning you can enjoy the weather while eating (and drinking). Unfortunately, it seems the entire waitstaff (including bartenders) feel like they are too good to wait on you. I'm not talking just occasionally being ignored, I'm talking ignoring and being outright rude. Throw in the ridiculous wait times and the lack of "check-ins" and the result is a bad experience. In conclusion, I could see myself going here monthly (or more frequently), but instead find myself checking it out every 6 to 9 months in hope they hired someone happy to help... read more

I write this with a heavy heart. Standard Tap was one of the first dining experiences I had in Philly, and immediately fell in love. Today was such a let down. Although I must admit that the last two visits weren't great, I was giving them the excuse of covid. Stop in and only one large plate is available on the menu from the original 5. Cocktails aren't available on the menu. Etc etc. Wrong beer brought to table. Ordered the cheese plate to make it quick. Who does a cheese plate with 1 type of cheese? Just sad all around. read more

After hearing about Standard Tap since moving to Fishtown and reading all the great reviews I thought for sure this place would be a favorite. Not the case. I, actually, can't think of one redeeming factor about this joint - except for the decor. When we walked in the bartender was showing people at the bar something on his phone. We were standing there waiting for someone to greet us or tell us to seat ourselves...anything. Nothing happened. My husband had to go up to the bartender and interrupt him for him to say we could seat ourselves. So we go looking for a table - all the downstairs ones were either taken or by the door (too cold) so I asked someone coming out of the kitchen if it was OK to go upstairs since I didn't know if there was seating up there. They said yes. We went up and someone (finally) gave us some direction and took us to a table. It was there that I realized that there are no paper menus, everything is on a board on the wall. There is no description of any of the food or what it comes with. I didn't know what the burger came with (lettuce, tomato, cheese...), I didn't know what kind of sauce came with the fried clams, etc. That was irritating. It was especially irritating when the waitress had a weird, unapproachable vibe to her. Another problem with the wall menus was that everyone who came in stood in front of our table and gawked at the wall behind us. A violation of my dining experience/personal space? Yes. Something else that turned me off was when I unrolled my utensils from my cloth napkin I realized that 1. the napkin had a hole in it and 2. the napkin smelled like straight up silly putty. Yeah, it smelled so strongly that it brought back memories from childhood and I immediately remembered what silly putty smelled like. I could have gotten over the non-attentive wait staff, the menus on the wall, and the seemingly unclean/old napkins... had it not been for the food that came out of the kitchen. It was completely, 100%, mediocre. There was nothing special about anything we ordered (fried clams, meatball sandwich, & a burger). As a matter of fact, my meatball sandwich was so messy that all the cheese fell off before making it to my table. The sauce was on my french fries and I was pulling french fries off the cheese to get my sandwich back together. I eventually gave up and ate it like an open faced sandwich - with a knife and fork. Oh, but don't get me started on the knife. It was SO DULL I literally was feeling the burn from trying to cut the thing into pieces. Plus, why was my sandwich with fries served with a random piece of spicy cauliflower and a few peppers? Was it supposed to be a cute/spicy veggie side? Because that, too, was buried under my sandwich. I was incredibly disappointed in my experience here. My husband insists that it'd be a good place for drinking only. He says the beer selection is good (I wouldn't know - I don't drink beer), and I DO admit that the ambiance was interesting. read more

The Standard Tap definitely proved to be a perfect spot for a Happy Hour gathering. Huge bar areas, damn good food, an awesome dedication to local beers to the point that even Guinness wasn't available, and awesome music playing in the background. For the first time ever at a Yelp event I can say that Joy Division and M.I.A. where playing in the background, and people like Chrissy R. and Carrie WEREN'T responsible for it. sounds like a Winner to me. While waiting for more people to arrive I enjoyed a beer downstairs. The Victory 5 year and chill wooden decor rocked my socks. As more people arrived we promptly took over the back upstairs area and enjoyed some beers. Despite the rain I still tried to check out the outside deck and it definitely had an perfect view of outside NoLibs. I know where I'm sitting next time! Standard Tap is definitely the bar that best showcases the local craft beers. the fact that they don't serve any brew from outside the tri-state area is actually pretty admirable, and they actually manage to keep it pretty well rounded. The food also went above the standard pub fare. Yelpers were right because I definitely had the best portabello sandwich EVER! but next time I think I'm going to go for some of those mussels. damn did they look delish! read more

This place is so awesome and has such a trendy vibe. I kept thinking this would be a great 2nd or 3rd date spot since the rooftop is intimidate with dim lighting (and space heaters during the cold months) as well as a great cocktail menu. Drinks are a little pricey, but I believe that helps contribute to the crowd - not a rowdy bunch on the upper level. Standard tap has a dj some nights on the weekends and that has been a fun atmosphere as well, but I prefer this place for late night drinks as you're walking through the area. read more

Another consistently good restaurant that I am so thankful is standing the test of time in Philadelphia. The chalkboard menu changes daily but not drastically. If the chicken pie is on it, I'm getting it, without fail. It's the perfect amount of food - a nice pillow of mostly shredded chicken with some gravy, carrots, onions, and maybe a few peas on a mixed green salad. I'm not a huge eater but I think this is a big meal and I still always clean my plate. Love it. I think one time I actually teared up when I got there and saw them erasing the chicken pie from the chalkboard because of a freak kitchen accident. The pulled pork sandwich is definitely a tasty and hearty second choice for me, but the pot pie and I have a relationship. If neither of those show up the duck salad is remarkable. A whole roasted duck leg on a hearty, mixed green salad, nice and lightly dressed. Dear lord, everything on this menu is exceptional. And there are plenty of veggie options too, like the beet salad, veggie chili or chick pea sandwich. I think the priciest thing on the menu is probably in the mid-twenties and even though I doubt I've had it because that generally exceeds my price range, I don't doubt that it's worth it though. The beer selection is proudly local: Sly Fox, PBC, Lancaster, Flying Fish, Troegs, Victory etc... Similarly, they support local farmers as well, typically buying all of their produce from Fishtown's Greensgrow Farms (when it's seasonally appropriate of course) and other 'Buy Fresh, Buy Local' contributors. read more

Been here a few times for drinks but felt obligated to write a review after a recent dinner experience. The food was exceptional - not at all what I expected from what I thought was a drink-focused bar. The chalk boards represent an ever changing menu of local and seasonal ingredients, and the servers are there to guide you through the dining process. Per our server's recommendations, we ordered a variety of plates to share: venison tartare, baked feta, potatoes, and a large order of mussels. I am a big fan of raw food and loved the tartare. The baked feta was my favorite. The mussels were a solid dish and the potatoes had a little kick to them. Would recommend all. Finished the meal with three (!!) desserts: creme brulee, flourless cake, and brownie sundae, which benefits CHOP. The creme brulee was a larger portion than your average. The flourless cake was a little dry for my taste. The brownie sundae was delicious. The entire glass was coated in chocolate fudge-yum! Also note-beer selection is mostly local and top notch... I'm usually a wheat or sour beer drinker and had multiple draft options to choose from. I'm excited to keep coming back here and trying more dishes and drinks. read more

Last weekend, about 20 of my relatives descended on this restaurant. We're loud, we ask a lot of questions, we want substitutions, we change our seats constantly so we can talk to everyone... we're hard work. Seriously, you can ask my husband. Lol Highly recommend the brussel sprouts. Done wrong, they're terrible. Done right and they are delicious. Standard Tap's sprouts were so good. But this review is really about the service we received, which was impeccable - friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. Did I mention that we're loud and move around a lot? Yeah. At one point, I saw our waiter pick up my aunt's Moscow Mule and carry it to another table, where she'd moved to sit with her cousin shortly after ordering the drink. Great beer, great burger and great atmosphere. That's the fairly common sentiment and sums up my experience of Standard Tap in a nutshell. The double standard burger is one of the city's best burgers. It's juicy, meaty and large. It comes with the basic toppings- lettuce, onions and pickles on the side. The fries are quite crispy and tasty too. No frills. Just a really solid burger and fries. They have a great craft beer selection on draught as well. Once a year they hold an event called Pumpkin Head. For $10 you get a fresh, hollowed out pumpkin filled with pumpkin beer, with refills for $2. That's almost like a pumpkin open bar! There were about 7-9 different pumpkin beers available. The 2014 pumpkin beers included Southern Tier Brewing Company Pumking, Point Brewery Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale, Manayunk Brewer Yunkin' Punkin' and other great pumpkin brews. They weren't messing around with the selection. I love the burger, but I hear their other menu options are great as well. I hated, hated, hated this place! It looks adorable on the outside and the inside decoration is admittedly wonderful. My girlfriend and I had been wanting to go to Standard Tap for quite a while, particularly to sit in the upstairs balcony area. The seats were highly uncomfortable. They were bucket-like and way too deep and it was difficult to get out of them. The table we sat at was too small and it had not been steadied so it annoyingly rocked back and forth. For such an expensive place, and a place so seemingly convinced of it's own fanciness, Standard Tap amazingly didn't have a printed menu, just a list of expensively priced items written on a chalk board. This chalk board was located BEHIND my girlfriend, forcing her to turn around in order to read the offerings. I solved the problem by taking a picture of the menu with my cell phone and sharing it with her. The menu was ridiculously over-priced. I don't understand why this place has a "$$" rating. Most of the appetizers were between $15 and $20 and the entrees were all between $15 and $30. The meal size was unsubstantial and the quality certainly wasn't worth the price. The names given for the menu items don't match what the item actually is. For example, the "Chicken Pie" is chicken placed on top of a bed of greens. When I asked the waitress about the ridiculousness of calling such a thing a "pie" she looked at me as if I was the ridiculous one. The bottom line is this place thinks it's much fancier than it actually is. It's obsessed with itself and not the customer and it's an uncomfortable and expensive place to have a meal. Standard Tap thinks it's in the middle of Rittenhouse Square, not North 2nd Street. I'll never go here again. read more

I think the Standard Tap is a solid place. I have taken many different friends here and they all seem to enjoy themselves. It's a great place to get a beer and it doesn't get too crazy. I attended the Pumpkin Head event, which was a fun event because I drank out of a hallowed pumpkin. While I was hungry at the event, I wanted to order the burger because that is what they are known for, but I couldn't handle that much food at the time. So when my friend ordered the grilled octopus I had to try it. Honestly, it was so good. Brunch is amazing!!! We had a large group with a new waiter and no issues. Great coffee, excellent meals with an eclectic atmosphere. If this is what Philly is all about I a in! Meals: veggie hash- great food and made me feel like I was having a healthy breakfast. Peach Hotcakes- like desert on a plate. Poutine- great for out hangovers, messy and delicious. Biscuits and gravy- I didn't know they had a southern grandma in the back but the only way these were so good is that they have granny from GA back there! Overall great experience. This place never disappoints! Whether I come here for brunch, happy hour, dinner, or late night drinks it always has just the right ambiance. Not to mention the beer selection is fabulous and the rotating food menu is always stocked up to please. On my most recent visit, I came with my mom and sisters from out of town. We sat down at a both and were greeted very quickly by our server. He was very helpful with recommendations and helped me decide on getting the chicken pot pie. I am sure glad I did! It had a flaky outer crust and the most delicious chicken and vegetables inside. At first, I was questioning the bed of greens that the pot pie is served on, but they are very refreshing and balance an otherwise heavy dish very well! I will be back... next week. read more

I met a friend for dinner last night at Standard Tap. I loved everything about the restaurant between its warm pub like feel to it's second floor porch that allowed us to sit and watch the pedestrians walk by below. If you've never been there, Standard Tap's "thing" is that they don't have a set menu. They have an evolving list of small and large plates written on a chalk board. They also have a full raw bar. The chicken pot pie looked amazing (It was in a puff pastry instead of a typical crust) as was the mushroom melt which had aged cheddar and Asian pears. Happy hour - They have rotating specials and this week was $3 Troegs drafts. But even our none happy hour beer was $6 so nothing crazy. I am not a super adventurous eater and found plenty of things on the menu that I would eat. Great vibe, food, and staff makes this place a must try in NoLibs! read more

A recent revisit to the Standard Tap for brunch turned around my initial opinion of the place. While I admired the Tap's totally local beer list and focus on seasonal, spur of the moment cooking, I didn't really dig the food I had during my maiden voyage. I chalked that lackluster experience up to ordering dinner dishes during brunch, which now I understand as a no-no. Rather, sticking to breakfast food during breakfast service (who'da thunk it) resulted in a hearty, reasonably priced, and relaxing brunch experience at the Tap. Teetotalling for the day, I enjoyed the restaurant's exquisite, house-roasted coffee rather than one of the local beers on draft. The small-batch, robustly rich beans brewed here rival any of the better-known coffee spots around the city. The theme of the day's menu was sausage, and thus I ordered the "lamb sausage baked eggs." My vegetarian dining companion stuck with the basic breakfast and let me eat his side of scrapple (perks of dining with your parents). My dish presented a terra-cotta crock with layers of roasted eggplant, pistachio and lamb sausage, fried, runny eggs, and a bit of bechamel sauce. This lighter version of moussaka maintained a pleasant balance among the rich bechamel, sweet roasted veggies, and nutty lamb sausage. Biscuits (my favorites in the city), had a bit of bready chew with a significant buttermilk tang, complementing the fresh fruit jams adeptly. The star of the meal actually was the side of scrapple; the thin, crisp patty had a prominent maple note without cloying sweetness which paired well with the minerally, organy flavor of the pork. I do still have some gripes with this place, i.e. no menus and limited non-salad vegetarian options, but I definitely am more eager to return than prior. read more

I went to this place wanting a good burger, and after seeing the first picture on yelp, I decided to go to this place. Don't be deceived though!! The burger looks NOTHING like the one in the picture! First off, it says ribeye burger, but ribeye isn't even an option on the menu, so We got the standard burger, which was absolutely disappointing. Fries were tiny and soggy. Also, I assume they're trying to be cool with the whole no menu thing, so instead, had it posted randomly throughout the restaurant on chalkboards. Ok, the idea would be cute if I didnt have to get up from my table and walk to someone else's table to awkwardly stand there and explain that i'm not a creeper and that im just trying to read the tiny font on the menu. I would've given a 2 for the food, but indeed the outside balcony is very appealing, and did have some good beer choices. Would come again for drinks, but next time will make sure to sit somewhere I can read the damn board. read more
