Picture this: You're walking down Michigan Ave in 20° weather with 2 friends. After an hour you decide you're too cold and want to get something warm and pleasant to warm your frigid soul. Conveniently you stumble upon Stan's Donuts; the inside is warm, the sign is bright, and the appeal is stronger than the sexual tension between Gru and Lucy in Despicable Me 2. Upon entering, the hot chocolate pops out at you on the digital menu. You and your friends all order it (you first, then your two friends). The next part will shock you. You wait 5 minutes, a reasonable time to wait, then they put out two hot chocolates. However the names are for your other two friends, the same two who ordered after you. Doubt begins to arise. 5 more minutes pass, no third hot chocolate. You ask the barista where it is. He says he's making it. He proceeds to walk away from the machine and never return. 5 more minutes pass, no third hot chocolate. You ask a different barista. They ask if they want you to remake it. Confusion arises. 5 more minutes pass, no third hot chocolate. You ask the third and final barista. They ask what size. You were never asked for a size. They make your hot chocolate. They give you the wrong size. You drink the hot chocolate. It doesn't taste good, especially after waiting 20 minutes. I will not be returning to Stan's unless it is in a fever dream, nightmare, or a mix of the two. Grrrr. The apple fritter was mid too. read more

I came here on a Sunday morning. The line moved quickly and all of the staff were super friendly. We picked out four donuts-- vanilla drizzled glazed with sprinkles, chocolate drizzled cake, blueberry cake, and a chocolate long john. This was about $11. The vanilla glazed was hands down the best. Seriously, it was so good. The blueberry cake was my second favorite. I was underwhelmed by the chocolate flavors, as the chocolate was just too bitter for me. Came here on a whim for gluten free donuts on a Sunday morning because their competitor was out. I tried blueberry glaze and chocolate. Both were delicious! Lighter than a regular donut, but still with that crunchy fried exterior. The blueberry gaze was particularly delicious, a surprise to me because I would never pick that if I had other choices. Not good. Stopped here late morning about 11:15 and got what we thought was an assorted half dozen for 15.99 were charged individually for 3 specials and 3 dough boys and weren't told that would change our price. Signed up for the app and got out free glazed donut. I then got charged for the free donut and had to go back up for a refund. Eating the donuts was a huge disappointment. They were big and dry and really bland overall. I did enjoy one, the blueberry cheese danish. Really good. The rest were not good. I did get a coffee and it was really good coffee. The staff was super nice and accommodating but for $30 definitely not worth it. Overall, super let down. read more

So I have been eating way too many of these donuts but I can't help it! There are so many to try and they have all been so good so far! This location is in Northwestern and I've been having lots of tests and appts so I have an excuse I've tried: Nutella pocket (loaded with Nutella, I love Nutella so much I eat it straight from the tub, so I enjoyed this. Only thing, it was a tad greasy) Raspberry lemon old fashion (lemon old fashion topped with a raspberry glaze. This is one of my fave flavor combo and this didn't disappoint. I get this every time. It's flavors are bright and don't taste fake) Chocolate sprinkle cake (nice and soft, not too much nutmeg. Chocolate topping not too sweet) Cinnamon roll (this is hands down my favorite to date. So much cinnamon and it was so yummy and gooey) Apple fritter (best I've ever had. Firm but soft. Nice Apple Flavor with lots of apples. I could eat this every day) And now for the Le Stan. Just get it. Seriously. Just do it. It wasn't overly sweet even sprinkled with sugar. Nice and flaky but a little chewy too. The best part... it's filled with pastry cream!! Don't know what's happened to Stan's, but the donuts I had yesterday were perhaps the worst I've ever tasted even if comparing to packaged grocery store brands. The toffee donut looked sensational, but was an indiscriminate mix of artificial flavors that didn't blend well and tasted like old cake. The Boston cream would have nearly been all right except the chocolate glazing was obviously fake-flavored with chalkiness. Don't be misled into thinking you'll get real (not synthetic) caramel, real vanilla (not the chemical vanillin replacement) or real chocolate. You won't. Another example of a once good company going to the dark side with cheap ingredients...and still charging sky-high prices. read more

Sad for me. We got there 15 minutes before posted closing hours and they had all the nuts put away and someone was mopping up and just stood there and stared at us. Doors were locked and entry was denied. Looked kind of cool but when some have to walk 5-6 blocks to come eat pastries we not happy. Good luck! read more

They have a couple of gluten-free options - I had half of the chocolate glazed and half of the green glaze (was it pistachio?). Fantastic donuts and coffee and terrific service. We picked out four donuts, Coconut Cream, Nutella, Cinnamon Sugar, and a simple glazed. Divine is all I can say. I swear they taste like they came straight from heaven. We also enjoyed cappuccino, and we were equally thrilled with that. But the best thing about Stan's is the man behind the counter. This place is a Chicago legend. Just like pizza places, donut places fight for the title of best joint in the city. What I love is ordering online and picking up. This location is terrible. I walked over after a horrible shift in the ER, hoping to brighten our day. When I waked in the guy said nothing. We tried to say hi and got ignored, never even faced us. I had to try twice to even get his attention. I asked if I could get some donuts. Without turning he yelled, "we only have some of these and some of those!" I laughed and left. Just spent $11.00 on TWO of the lemon Le Stan's and am quite disappointed. Both are very dark in color, not sure if it's supposed to be. I TRIED cutting into one of them with a plastic fork and knife but should have used a chisel. I opened it up and there was a small stingy amount of the lemon filling. Streeterville has suddenly become the donut capital of Chicago - first we got Do-rite Donuts, and now Stan's?! We already had Glazed & Infused, a 24-hour Dunkin' Donuts, and even "Wonuts" at Waffles cafe. It's like they're trying to make the students/staff of Northwestern hospital as fat as possible -- thankfully, scrubs and white-coats are very forgiving of expanding waist lines. Stan's opened up a few days ago in the soon-to-open new Northwestern Outpatient building, their second location in Chicago. I was excited after hearing so many rave reviews about their donuts - and they didn't let me down. Their Green Pistachio Old-fashioned is deeee-licious, and as you could probably have already guessed: their Nutella Banana Pocket is too (since anything with nutella = amazing). If you were to ask me which Streeterville Donut place is the best - I can't answer that yet. I may have to do a donut tour one morning to figure that out, followed by a donut-induced coma. read more

On our trip to Chicago, I made a list of doughnut shops that I wanted to try. Stans was not one of them. Saw them as I was walking around downtown Chicago. Walked into a good looking donut shop. There was both indoor and outdoor seating available. Both areas were nice and sanitary. The display cases were filled with lovely looking delicacies. I only had room for one in my tummy. Biscoff Banana Pocket was my choice. It was expensive, but worth it. I would purchase that yummy pocket of goodness again! I'm glad that I dropped into Stan's Donut & Coffee. It was worth every calorie. Would go here quite a bit if I lived in the area because I would enjoy eating trying all of those good looking sweets! read more

As newbies to Stan's, my wife and I sampled a few different donuts. The lemon pistachio old fashion and the Boston cream were excellent, as were the glazed old fashion and red velvet. Service was excellent - very friendly staff. read more

These are yum-sauce doughnuts not to be confused with the crap sold at Dunkin' Donuts. (However, when visiting later in the day after doughnut making has ceased, it's likely to come across some that have been sitting all the day long. Much like DD's fare.) I wonder why they decided to go with a name having donuts rather than doughnuts. (There are distinctions between the two, but as it is, Stan's has been around for quite a long history.) These gluten-filled, goodness kind are grossly incomparable (to DD) and encapsulate that great feeling associated with a nice, "doughy" bite. (FYI, they also offer gluten-free options) except for the obvious; taste and offering, they are a bit pricey. Their doughnuts look to be rich and gooey filled. But once your teeth bite into that first tasty bite, you'll realize it isn't as sweet as you imagined. It's just sweet enough. Recently, I picked up a bag of five doughnuts for a little over $14 dollars. (Some were specialty. They offer three different pricing points based on type. Check their menu online.) Whenever I come across a new sweet shop or bakery, I like sharing the goodness with family / friends. The recipients of these doughnuts were pleasantly thrilled and those having curd or cream centers were happily surprised. This location is within the Northwestern hospital campus and parking is not available in front. Although metered parking is available a block away it isn't always available. So, I like to post someone in the car, light up the emergency lights and try to make a quick in and out. (This usually works best.) Since they are located within a hospital building, they don't get as busy as stand alone businesses on the street, so your wait shouldn't be too long. Fav'd doughnuts: Glazed, Boston Creme, that peanut butter filled crazy one, the dreambar, lemon curd, buttermilk and ...can't remember the last one. Liked the raspberry jelly filled doughnut best. The peanut butter one was salty. The rest of our half dozen was so so. I did enjoy the retro, circa 1950s, look and feel to it. It reminded me of an old diner. I enjoyed the artwork. Pretty wheelchair accessible. Just need to go through the hospital instead of the main door, but there are automatic door openers for all three doors involved. Open later on a Sunday compared to many other restaurants. read more

Cute place... nearby my 11:30am appointment, so stopped in from breakfast and was like $1.99 for one Donut? Better be a damn good donut... geez. I'm the person at DD thinking they should be like .50 each... are you with me? =) Anywhoo.... when in the Gold Coast... got a few things, coffee (meh), plain bagel (meh), a cinnamon twist thing (like a fluffy churro... good - even cold), and one of the stuffed pocket ones with chocolate. The last 2 items were for friends and I to share later in the day in Wicker Park. I'm so thoughtful right? Yeah... I am. The place is cute, like the pastel blender décor wall, and liked sitting outside to have the bagel and interesting cream cheese with raisins or something blended into it... shared this with some chubby little starlings that fearlessly landed near me and gave me hungry eyes.
