This was my first time at Stan's. My husband is from DC and has been here before but he's not a drinker so this place is wasted on him. Everyone talks about the wings but we don't eat meat or poultry just seafood so we had actually meals and not finger food. You go to Stan's for strong drinks and wings. More like straight liquor and the entire jurassic wing. These drinks and the wings are both big, big. Let's start with the drinks. You get a tall glass served full of the liquor of your choice on the rocks. Your mixer comes on the side in a small glass. If you want a fruity, cute drink, Stan's is not the place for you. If you want 5-6 ounces of your liquor choice and trying to figure out how to get enough mixer in so you're not breathing fire, go to Stan's. I'm exaggerating a little, but just a little. A quick look at the pictures and you'll see Stan's doesn't mix drinks and they don't play with the portions. The wings are the go to as far as I could tell. Their mumbo sauce was one of the better versions I had while in DC. It had a touch of sweetness with a serious kick of heat. The wings were crispy and juicy, served so hot you had to exert all the will power one could muster to let them cool enough to eat, or burn your face off. Stan's makes me think of Cheers. You enter at street level to a stairway leading down. The entire restaurant is below ground and has a cozy secretive feel, but there is no secret about Stan's to locals. Word is that President Clinton and President Obama were frequent customers. It was the first stop in this trip to DC and got the visit off to a great start. Not sure what it is like during busy periods. They did have tables marked for pacing, but it is such a small and intimate space, I can imagine it feels compact when it starts to pick up in the early evening. I ordered a Cesar Salad with Salmon. It really had no taste. The place was packed and it looks like it's a very hip place to frequent but for me, I'm not too sure this would be my choice. They get the extra star because of the drinks and the service we received to resolve an issue. I tried the Obama which is a combination of multiple Ciroc vodka flavors and a splash of pineapple juice...it was a weeknight so one was enough. The restaurant was smaller than I expected, but enough space to hang out with friends in the open seating area. The bar was too tight with the crowd that was there. We put our name down to wait for a table to open up, but even if we wanted to eat at the bar I don't think it would have been very comfortable on this particular night. The side salads were fine. The naked wings were seasoned well with nice, crisp skin which was really good. Their mumbo sauce is spicy - it caught a few of us off guard but it was tolerable. The mozzarella sticks were ok. They were very hot and cheesy but would've been less bland with a sprinkle of Italian seasoning and marinara could use some oregano. The star of the show wasn't really the food, but the staff and how they handled a complaint that my friend had. There was a mishap with the order of catfish nuggets that was resolved by management/Brian. My friend frequents Stans but was extremely dismayed with the portion for the nuggets and the cost. There were only five pieces served that were flat and unappetizing. They promptly resolved her issue, and made sure that our table was satisfied with all of our orders and service. There seem to be a mixed crowd, from suited professionals hanging with their colleagues, to casual diners with friends. We were surprised to see kids here so late. Being in such close proximity with children made us more cautious about what we were discussing, which took away from the experience. read more

Had a great time at Stan's with a few friends. It was super packed but Friday night (7ish) so I get it. Waited about 30 mins but service was friendly and fast once we got seated. Ignacio was our server and he took great care of us. We got a few apps (mozz sticks and jalapeño poppers) with the fried chicken. So, my cousin recommended Stan's as girls' night out date, and after a night at Stan's, it's a keeper. Stan's will have you bent (that's slang for feeling extra nice and maybe a little hung over the next morning). Before you're even seated, the hostess asks for ID and scans the back; I'm assuming this is done for authenticity's sake. If you're younger than 21, you're out of luck :-) Food: I didn't visit Stan's for their food, but ended up trying their calamari since I needed something to sop up the liquor. The calamari was actually decent, and I would get it again. Nicely seasoned and came with marinara sauce. - 3.5 stars Drinks: Well, drinks is what Stan's is known for. Their "pours" are beyond generous. I ordered a Whiskey Sour. While it was good, it wasn't the best Whiskey Sour. It did it's job though. - 3.5 stars Service: Travis was our waiter, and we were less than impressed with the service provided. Everyone has bad days, but it really seemed like Travis didn't want to be there. Unbeknownst to me, Stan's doesn't have a drink menu, and I asked for a drink menu. With a straight face, Travis said "we don't have drink menus." I thought he was kidding since I was at a "bar." Imagine me laughing and saying, "seriously, can I see your drink menu?" and with a straight face again receiving, "no, we don't have a drink menu." I normally love Stans, like love them, especially for their wings. The drinks were on point as usual and Dennis was a great server per usual . The reason why I have to sadly give them 3 stars is because my wings were undercooked despite the fact that asked for them to be extra crispy. Some were cooked extra crispy and some were undercooked. Great little dive bar down stairs in downtown DC. We went solely to try the wings. Bar tender was friendly and servicing the bar and tables. We got the whole wings but they offer party style (traditional) the wings are very crispy kinda like fried chicken batter. They do not coke sauces but with a side of Asian chili/tabasco for dipping. It has a tangy consistency, I would prefer Buffalo sauce but that is just me. The bar/dinning is old school dark, it's on the smaller side but they have a big lunch crowd and pour a great cocktail. They were actually also offering take out alcoholic drinks (?), though I didn't get any drinks. They have a variety of foods, from burgers, seafood, salad, wings, etc. Of course the wings are the highlight of this place in my opinion, though their burger was pretty good, too. Kind of wished that I was able to get the food and dine in so the food could've been more freshly cooked. I feel like a lot of food loses its quality when placed in a container for a period of time and sometimes it gets soggy or very dry/hard. One thing I did wish that they would've done differently is to up the quantity of onion rings- the burger was way too big for the amount of onion rings that came with it. Visited Stan's around 10 pm on a Saturday and the place was packed! We had to wait 30 minute for a table, but the hostes Tenisha (spelling?) could not have been nicer. She was attentive and checked on us regularly, even during the meal. After seating us she told us "Stan's is known for the fried chicken and strong cocktails" and she could not have been more right. We had the French Onion soup and shrimp, which were both excellent. The French onion seems like it's made with chicken broth and was excellent. We drank Ciroc Obama's and had a blast! You aren't a true native or transplant if you have never visited Stan's at some point in your life. You come here to be seen, get drunk and to eat greasy food. Its dark, small, crowded and in a basement. There is nothing bougie about this place but some of the patrons. PERIOD. I strongly recommend that you stick with any and all of the fried foods...primarily the fried chicken wings and fries as that's what they are known for. If you are like me, and dont do chicken especially when they look like they will fly at any moment, then go for the catfish nuggets which are delicious. You must also absolutely get liquored down. They don't skimp you on the booze so drink responsibly. Expect to wait a while to be seated especially if you come at prime hours (e.g., happy hour, during a big convention or night in the city. etc.). They are funny about sitting incomplete parties so make sure your folks are on time. Finally, dont expect a whole lot of order. It can be a little chaos most times.
