What a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I went to another local restaurant to eat. They ended up being closed and recommended Stan's. We got there at 10pm and it was packed. It took a minute for the waitress to greet us. We almost left but it was definitely worth the wait. Server was super attentive. We had great drinks. Delicious good. Food came out quickly. Definitely coming back next time im in town! read more

If you're ever in DC & want to visit a staple for chicken & drinks, Stan's is the place. It's a grown folk downstairs bar in the middle of downtown. The food is so bomb, ESPECIALLY the wings. This is the BEST place if you want a drink truly worth the money. Stan's definitely provides a cool, grown vibe. read more

It's always a good time at Stan's! Good food, good company, and strong drinks will never lead you down the wrong path! Okay, maybe a couple of there drinks will have you stumbling down the right path but that's can be fixed with a quick uber/lyft ride. I have missed them during the COVID-19 pandemic but was happy to find them on Postmates recently! I ordered fried wings, baked wings, and chili and was not disappointed! Everything came fresh and well packaged and reminded me of the memories that I've made there pre-COVID days. Stan's is a staple in the city and everyone should patronize them at least once while in the area. When everything opens back up, try some of their drinks as well...if you dare! I've been coming to Stan's for over two decades. They still have amazing fried wings, great drinks, and wonderful service. There's not as many patrons as pre-Covid times, I'm assuming this is because more people are working remotely and not coming into downtown DC for in person work, that being said this is a wonderful place to grab a drink after work, or a hearty lunch. Went here while touring DC and stumbled upon this place for food. My husband and I ordered the catfish nuggets, a half order of the whole chicken wings, and the fried haddock for dinner with a loaded baked potato. We enjoyed it all. Nice, crispy, chicken wings that were seasoned perfectly. The catfish was my absolute favorite with hot sauce. My husband loved his fried haddock and ate it all. We will be returning on our next visit in the future. The bathroom was a little scary and our waitress was attentive, making sure everything was fine. read more

Not a very well known spot, however, my boyfriends mom always comes here for a green apple martini and chicken wings. You walk into a basement and you're transformed to the 90s with carpet on the floor and walls filled with mirrors, pay no attention it... this place is LEGIT! Unfortunately, this restaurant has greatly disappointed me. I placed a separate order for 6 wings (1/2 order) and i paid in advance... I gave them grace because its busy and I am at a big table & waited about an hour only for them to tell me (make excuses) that they gave my order to the wrong person. I do not think there is an excuse for this type of absurdity. I do hope the restaurant better train their employees in tracking patrons orders instead of having them wait for a long time for an order that does not exist. Now I have to leave here with my time severely wasted and hungry. Please do better. read more

My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat while visiting. We both ordered the black angus prime rib. I ordered well done and my boyfriend ordered medium. I also ordered fries and baked potato and the waiter said very nasty "I'll see if I can do that". How come? I'm the one paying for it! Well, a lot of people came in, got their food and nothing about ours. We waited for our food for 54 minutes! Both steaks were burned, the fries were terrible and the broccoli was raw. I have lived in DC for 12 years. I have had multiple repeated amazing experiences at Stan's. It pains me to give them two stars. They deserved six until tonight. I brought a group of DC neighbors and friends for the first time back in nearly a year and nearly choked and stabbed on a piece of metal from the frying basket hidden inside the chicken breading. It's shown in the picture here. The manager's response was not to comp our meal and apologize profusely. Instead, he paid for one of the wing orders and said he couldn't do any more because it was the owners policy. I've been going to Stan's for years for two reasons: the wings and the whiskey! Well not specifically the whiskey but the fact that drinks are served with chaser/mixer on the side. I love being able to pour my own splash of ginger into my glass of whiskey. If you're new, you might raise a brow at the price of each drink (ex. $14 for my Jack and ginger) but that is basically for a double. So really it's a steal! And the wings? Oh those juicy, seasoned to death, crispy, golden wings?! They're perfect every single time! The baked wings are hands down my favorite and served with a side of classic mumbo sauce. Dang it! Now I want wings! Lol The vibe is always super laid back and not too pretentious. You walk down from street level into the restaurant and it's kind of like a jazz joint without the jazz lol. Terrible overpriced cocktails. Went here this last weekend for drinks with a few friends. Ordered a Ciroc Obama and was given cheap vodka in one glass and luke warm pineapple juice as a "chaser" in another all for $18.50. The Manhattan and Old Fashioned my friends ordered were equally bad. And the "martinis" my other friends ordered were basically just syrup and liquor. Who charges almost $20 for cocktails like these. Was in the DC area, college buddy suggested it because of how they serve the drinks. I had two tequila shots served with lemon and Lime. Friends had the wings, tenders, fries and onion rings. I opted for the healthier spinach salad with shrimp. It was decent. The spinach , mushrooms, red onions were all very fresh. The shrimp were room temperature, wished they were seasoned and hot. But I would recommend to people that don't want fried food. Next time I come back I will get something fried. I love that they had tv's with sports center. I visited his location for the first time yesterday. I enjoyed the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. I would recommend this place. This place is excellent for all cultures, especially the urban and LGBTQ communities. The only negative is the drinks are regularly priced. They give you a lot of alcohol, but they don't advertise the price. The tab for four people with four drinks each and two shared chicken, and French-fries platters were over $300. read more

Okay, maybe I threw a little too much shade on Stan's in the past. It was clearly because I fell off my whiskey and rum wagon to enjoy a poorly made, fru-fru martini with the ladies. But upon my return, I got what I was looking for: A cup full of rum with a cup full of coke to mix it with. The proportions were just about equal. (Just how I like it!) I've heard about this place for years. Finally gave it a try. It really is a quaint, unpretentious watering hole where you can relax and enjoy good bar food and drinks. We ordered the fried wings, fries, chicken tenders and cocktails. Just as everyone else says, the cocktails come in two glasses. One for the liquor and a separate glass for the chaser. Now don't be fooled. Yes they provide a good amount of liquor but they're not giving anything away. It's still DC so the drink prices reflect that. (That's just a heads up for my out of towners) The fried wings were delicious. I definitely recommend getting them. Also the baked wings were outstanding. Our neighbors sitting next to us offered a sample of their baked wings so we also gave them some fried wings. I guess that's why they say Stans is like Cheers. Everyone is super friendly. The place is small, so be prepared to sit in close proximity to strangers. It's dark and only one bar with TVs. This isn't a place to watch the game unless you score a seat at the bar. This is more of a place to talk to your friends or coworkers even. Not a place for intimate conversations as the noise level was pretty high for us. The restaurant is small and located in a basement and you are packed in like sardines. The alcoholic beverages were great with plenty of top shelf liquors to choose. But maybe that's better for them too. You can order to-go at the window and/or request a spot in the limited spaced dining/bar area. I've only gotten the Sub Club the few times I've gone here but what can I say? its a fail proof staple that is hard to get wrong and that they do very right. I often pair it with one of their drinks, this time being the spicy ginger ale which was solid as well. There's really not much place to dine-in if you're trying to dine and go - I recommend only using the dining area if you're solo, a couple, or part of a small group (at MOST maybe - a hard maybe - on 4 people) and only if you want to use the bar. One couple tried to squeeze in a baby stroller into the bar/dining area. Its really not suitable for things like suitcases or strollers so if you're in that camp maybe try some other spots because that also made a tiny space all the more difficult to navigate. Also, if you have a mobility device, this might not be the best spot for you either. I've never used their restrooms before so can't comment on that one. I still will say it is good for when you want to grab and go - so if you're in that category, and you like moderately priced sandwiches (for this part of town) this might work for you.

I ordered a 9 inch capicola, ham, and cheese sub on the hard roll. The roll was very good and fresh but I couldn't taste the cheese or meat in the sandwich because there wasn't enough of it. I tasted the bread, the toppings of lettuce, tomato and onions. I decided to deconstruct the sandwich and found exactly 4 very thinly sliced pieces of meat and 2 very thinly sliced pieces of cheese as pictured clearly in the photographs. I also noticed that the they have different prices for the same type of meats. For example, they have a $29.99 per pound Capicola and one for $9.99 a pound. I asked which went on the sandwich and of course it was the cheaper one. That wasn't surprising and getting my sandwich back to the office. Low Key Racism / Preferential Treatment if you're White Many people frequent "Stan's Restaurant" in D.C. and it is regarded as a staple in the city.. known for its (doubles) and (pour your own chaser) that keeps it packed with 98% Black customer base. I witnessed some Bullshit in there yesterday in fact.. I've been to Stans several times and they always ask what you want to drink... because naturally it's a watering hole. It takes a while for them to return even if you only request water. I witnessed a Caucasian couple enter the restaurant they were seated asked what they wanted to drink.. 15 to 20 seconds later they are brought water and about 45 seconds after that a bread basket was brought out for them. Being the investigator that I am and in attempts to be politically correct I scanned the menu just to see if that could be ordered (it's not on the menu) Now ask yourself (if you've ever gone to Stan's) Have you ever seen a bread basket or been offered one? In addition they were seated directly next to me and didn't request it... I call bullshit on Stan's Because that was fucking bullshit. I want to express my serious disappointment with the service and overall experience at Stan's Restaurant in Washington, D.C., during my recent visit between 5 and 7 p.m. The manager on duty at the time was someone named Sean. From the beginning, the service was unacceptable. We waited nearly 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged or came to our table. When our food finally arrived, it was served cold. To make matters worse, the restroom facilities were extremely unclean and poorly maintained -- a major hygiene concern for any establishment serving food. I raised these concerns directly with the manager, Sean, but instead of offering an apology or showing any level of concern or empathy, he dismissed the issues altogether. His attitude came across as indifferent, and I left feeling completely unheard as a paying customer. This experience was frustrating and disappointing. I expected better from a place with Stan's reputation. I've been here a few times now, and every visit has been a great experience! The first time I came with one of my girlfriends, we were lucky enough to grab seats at the bar on a busy Thursday night--perfect timing as a couple was just leaving. Our bartender was incredibly friendly and welcoming. She shared some of her favorite menu picks and gave thoughtful recommendations that didn't disappoint. We ordered a couple of drinks, and they were perfectly balanced--not too strong, not too weak--just right! I also ordered the chicken sandwich, and wow... it was exactly what I was hoping for. Crispy, perfectly fried, and full of flavor--honestly one of the best I've had. Came here with a bunch of friends and that was a good decision. Since there were a lot of us, we ordered lots of appetizers to share. The baked chicken wings were great. They were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. You can also eat several of these without feeling guilty about grease. I did try a piece of the fried wings but I still like the baked ones better. We also ordered some of the catfish nuggets. I'm not a fan of catfish (they have a muddy spell) so I tend to avoid them. These, however, were okay. I'm not a convert but I didn't throw these across the room either. lol. The jalapeno poppers were probably my favorite appetizers here. They have a good amount of bite and the cheese was tasty. The cheese acquired some of the spiciness from the pepper so it almost takes like a peppered jack. My friends and I love a hole in the wall and when we stumbled across this place it was great! It was about 5pm on a Saturday after a show at the Kennedy Center. We were welcomed and they were super friendly. We left a flyer a few drinks because they ran out of some of the beers the guys were drinking. We told them that we would be back later for wings. My husband and I did return. But low and behold we were not welcome anymore. Well I was. I was welcome to go in and order to-go from the bar. The music kept the vibe alive while we waited. The space itself is VERY small with seating upstairs and downstairs, and I absolutely hated going up and down those stairs. It also made me wonder: How are restaurants like this accommodating guests who need ADA accessibility? Seriously? Our group only had water upstairs, and it honestly didn't seem like they were prepared for us. The food wasn't even ready when we arrived, so they ended up packing it to go. To make up for the delay, they offered complimentary shots. Nice gesture...but I don't drink, so it didn't really do anything for me. This visit also left me disappointed with the food I ate later. The chicken was tough, and it definitely didn't make up for the long wait. Two visits. Same slow service. This time, disappointing food, too. Unfortunately, I can't NOW recommend Vortex based on my recent experiences.

The burgers were great as well. The BBQ Chipotle was real spicy which was great! Both burgers were well balanced and did not fall apart! Which is rare these days. Normally the bun falls apart! The customer service is attentive and friendly. The wings and Walkers Smash Burger were a disappointment in the flavor department. The burger was bland and the wings did not have good texture. I like that Walters has adequate and ample booth seating. There is indoor and outdoor seating options, with plenty of big screen televisions throughout the restaurant. On big game nights, you can see the game on multiple screens and from various vantages. The bar is centrally located and seemingly accommodating for the size of the venue. The one downside of this experience is the mens restroom was downright filthy. Apparently there was an overflow or clogged urinal which spilled all over the floor and created an unsanitary situation. Overall, a good experience and viable option that is closer to South Capitol Street and not deep in the heart of Navy Yard.

We had the oysters, trinity egg rolls, chicken with red beans and rice, and the catfish and grits. Everything was incredible. Flavorful, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection. I also had a strawberry lemon drop that was fantastic. Presentation of the meals and drinks were 10/10, so have your cameras ready to snap some photos. The service was also amazing. Warm, welcoming, and provided plenty or recommendations that were a hit. Now this place is a bit pricey, so come prepared to spend a bit. I was also looking forward to the DJ, but they did not have one on the day we dined sadly. Despite that, I'm already planning my next brunch here!

I was actually excited about Kitchen + Kocktails because this was my second visit, and my first experience was AMAZING. Great food, beautiful atmosphere, the whole experience. So imagine my disappointment when we were escorted to a dark basement and served...a poorly made caesar salad and what I'm calling FAKE GUMBO. I'm sorry, but I was INSULTED. Kitchen + Kocktails, y'all know good and well this was not it! Of all the dishes that could have represented this restaurant on a DMV food tour, THIS was the choice?! The food was nasty, and unfortunately, I finally understood some of those not-so-great things I've been hearing about K+K on social media. What makes it worse is that I KNOW they can do better because I've experienced better myself. My first visit set the bar, and this experience wasn't even in the same building with that bar. Well...technically, we were in the building; we were just downstairs in the basement. The flower walls and beautiful hallways remain the highlights. The restaurant definitely has some gorgeous photo-op areas, but pretty décor couldn't save that meal. And AGAIN: How are these restaurants accommodating guests with ADA/accessibility needs?! SERIOUSLY? The stairs and accessibility concerns became a recurring theme throughout this tour. Thankfully, my first visit showed me a completely different side of Kitchen + Kocktails, so I know this experience isn't necessarily all they have to offer. But as a stop on the For the Culture DMV Food Tour? This was a MAJOR disappointment and definitely not the K+K experience I remembered.
