This restaurant has been CLOSED DOWN, several times for HEALTH CODE VIOLATIONS. They resolve the violations, then are approved to re-open ... then they are closed down again, and are ordered to address new-found health code violations. Each time they close down, they post a sign claiming they are "closed for vacation" or during some holiday periods. The workers do not wear gloves nor hair coverings. Meal and coffee prices are very high. The unprofessional staff (including the owner/manager, a huge, dirty looking man) often yell and argue with each other -- in this very small, tight, confined railroad like diner. Without knowing their history, I ate here recently. Within an hour, I became sick (nausea, vomiting and stomach pain) ... and had to leave work, to go across the street to seek medical treatment at White Plains Hospital. We were headed to another diner in the area but saw the low reviews and decided to go here instead. OMG! This place is awesome. 5 of us went and we all had excellent meals. It's diner food for sure, but it's amazing!!! Fried potatoes, corned beef hash, french toast, eggs, sausage, eggs and gravy all superb! There was one waitress and like 10 people there at the time, and she was so fast and efficient and friendly. The food came lightening fast. My french toast was nice and hot so the butter actually melted on it. There was a guy next to us that ordered the fried chicken and it was a huge portion and the guy said it was fantastic! I have been coming here for yearss and before that my parents were going and still come here. Its amazing, its little town feel, they know your name, what you like to order and how you like it. Yo Star, yo? A White Plains classic, Star Diner has been churning out culinary delights for ages. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior, this place is top notch. Traditionally, this is a spot I'll hit after 10pm and there is no better sensation than walking up those few steps and being bombarded with the fine smells wafting off the grill. Give Pauly some daps and settle in one of the booths or at the counter. The counter is a nice choice if you want to watch the masterful chefs at work. I'd recommend ordering anything that is made fresh on the grill. These are going to primarily be breakfast- like items. That grill is a magical thing. I imagine it like a Wok, absorbing the other flavors it combines everything into a greasy/undeniably delicious taste every time. My staple order is 2 pancakes with bacon and it'll run you $5.50. Consistently very satisfying and delicious. If you're smart, finish it off with a toasted blue (blueberry muffin). The milkshakes are also very good. The service is quick and always friendly. Pauly always holds it down. Downsides: Cash only It isn't very clean Not good for groups of more than 4 There has been many a night my friends and I ventured down East Post road for Star and it has never disappointed me. Solid joint, it is. Not fancy. Not modern. Not spacious. Surely solid. I wasn't greeted while walking in. I saw other people just grabbing a seat, so I did too. I was asked for my drink order moments later. Food order after my drink arrived. You'll get your food prepared in front of you (especially if you sit on the near end of the counter) by short order cooks who are fun to watch. Think hibachi, but the movements are natural rather than for show. The time between your order and service is mere seconds more than it takes for your food to cook on the griddle. You won't be waiting for your food long at all. I got one of their breakfast specials. The eggs and corned beef were spot on. The home fries were not as brown and flavorful as I would have liked, but they were tasty with some salt, pepper, and ketchup. My special didn't come with bacon, but I wish it had. The bacon looked crispy and awesome. If you want it limp, be sure to ask for it that way. The staff is primarily Spanish speaking natively. The wait staff spoke perfectly good English to get my order and special requests. Friendly and might even joke around with you. Don't expect to bring more than a party of four unless you want to occupy the counter, if there's even room for you there. Smallish four person booths and counter space only. Cash only. To be honest, the BF and I were satisfied but not blown away by the food. Tastes just like what you can make at home but at least someone is making it for you. Egg over medium was definitely cooked more like it was over easy. Bacon is on the crispy side which is what I prefer. Toast was not as fluffy as I like. First of all, it bodes poorly for the pancakes when Heather abandons them in favor of my toast. Second of all, what's deal with the hair-trigger waitress? I seemed to set her off when I asked for clarification that I had received milk instead of cream for my coffee. After that, everything I said seemed to be heard as a provocation. When a booth opened up, a different waiter took over and he seemed much nicer. When I couldn't catch his eye for the bill, I signaled the original waitress, she looked me in the eye, smugly pointed to the other waiter and then returned to wiping down a table. The Greek omelet was fine. The home fries were underdone potatoes that tasted like they had been cooked in beef tallow. Ive been going here since 1966 when Matty Moustakos owned it. Soon after Mike worked the counter and was the first person i ever saw who had the 'gotta curse tourettes' Hilarious. The home fries have never changed and remain the best in Westchester. Breakfast is their specialty imo and everyone should try it to see what good eggs etc are all about. We came here to eat breakfast since this diner was one of the only place that was open at 9 am Saturday morning, and it was also the closest breakfast place to the white plains train station. Small place, but packed at 9 am! The homemade French toast was a party in the mouth, amazing! Everything else was also very good. We even enjoyed our toast with butter. The Wife and I had lunch at the Star Diner before heading down to the City for a concert. Loved how small and quaint it was, typical greasy-spoon Diner you hear so much about in this area. We both had the Cheeseburger Deluxe and although it was nothing great, it was still pretty good. I've been to Star Diner many times over the years. There are several items on the menu I'd recommend as good values, and some I wouldn't. When i've eaten there, the food is always prepared to order, and comes out as you'd expect it. They do a very good job with breakfast items, e.g. scrambled eggs and omelets. if you order a cheese omelet with a side of home fries and toast, and ask them to burn the home fries, you'll get a good side of well done home fries. If you like french fries as a side order, they make a good side of fries, but take note that if a menu item doesn't include fries, they don't offer an option to add a side of fries. They do offer fries as an additional menu item, but you'll be paying up for compared to the price of adding a side of fries to items that offer it. This is not the place to go if you want a late night burger. they do offer burgers, but they're the same small patties you see at McD's, for more money. If you want a late night burger, you're better off driving over to the McD's on Central Ave. in White Plains, which is also 24 hours, and offers all of its standard menu during late night, except the dollar menu. Aside from the breakfast menu, they do make good deli sandwiches like turkey clubs here, and a good philly steak style sandwich, even though it's not on a hoagie roll. It may not have much in the way of peppers and onions on it, but they provide a generous portion of sliced seak on the sandwich for the money. If you're trying to lose weight, this is not the place to go. If you need to gain weight, you'll get a good bang for your buck here, and you'll do it with items that taste pretty good. read more

Don't let the appearance fool you. This gem, albeit resembles an eatery in a war torn country, has some of the best diner food I have yet to eat. Having had enough of the hospital food from across the street, I was told in passing about this place, and I am very happy that this person took the time to recommend it. I ordered a turkey sandwich, which not only was made from real fresh turkey breast (no cold cut), but it was a hefty size also. The lettuce and tomato were very fresh and the roll was soft and chewy. Although i have no desire to go back to the hospital, I am looking forward to visiting the Star Diner again soon! read more

Eating a late night toasted blue with butter is said to be a rite of passage at Harrison High School, but the meal you'll want to have here is breakfast. I also tried a pancake and it was unremarkable but good. Syrup from a big unmarked container. They have egg creams which are probably typical for the area, but I regret not getting one.
