Everything was creatively planned and decorated. It was also very clean and spacious inside and out. When you go in, there's a tea sampling station with the menus so you can see which tea you would like to order. Our server was really sweet, but she was the only one serving all of the tables, so she would come by every 10-20 minutes to check on us and some things we asked for didn't make it to the table. If they had more servers, customers would be happy with quicker service. The food and tea were delish! There were 6 of us so we shared a bunch of different teas. I really enjoyed the teas they had. The sweet and savory treats were really yummy! I really enjoyed them. Each person got 5 little savory treats and 4 sweet treats. I kind of wish we got one or two more for $45, but either way they were delicious! Just tried out Star Leaf and it was a great experience!I love the concept of an Asian fusion tea time. I thought the savories were a nice mix of Asian and classic with both creamy cucumber sando and the egg sandwich as well as the shrimp cake and the gyoza. The shrimp cake was definitely my favorite, I think they did an excellent job. The desserts were also a good mix between the different tarts and the cream puffs. I especially enjoyed the pink lychee truffle dessert--SO good! The teas were presented in a cute way with glass pots. We tried the Passionfruit and the Darjeeling, which out of the two, my favorite was the Darjeeling. You do get to sample teas as well, which is great if you're unfamiliar! The only thing I would love to see here is a loose leaf brewed tea selection versus the teabag. I think it's more suitable for the pre-fixe tea time. Cute concept but poor execution. At $45 per person for a total of 9 mini bites (5 savory, 4 sweet) and one pot of tea, I expected the service to be better. Although staff was friendly, the quality of service was choppy at best. After being seated for 15 minutes, the waitress finally stopped by our table to take our order. The first thing she told us was that we only have 90 minutes dining time which started counting at reservation time, after making us wait 15 minutes to place order. The food is decent, but nothing stood out except the shrimp cake. There was no cream, milk or sugar at the table for the teas that may need them. Typically you can order regular menu food à la carte (like orange chicken, short ribs, etc) but they don't do it on weekends when they are busy so it's a pain to bring kids here who don't necessarily enjoy cucumber or egg salad sandwich. For a place with 5 staff and only 7-8 tables occupied when we visited, the level of chaos in service was obvious and painful to watch. As someone who enjoys afternoon tea, I was excited to try Star Leaf, which is a new rebrand of the former Tea Modern Chinese down in Old Towne Orange. No reservation required for the afternoon tea experience, this should have been a red flag. Upon entering, I informed them I was there for the afternoon tea experience. They told me to sample the teas in front and picked one. I liked both the Darjeeling and the Lavender Chamomile, and ultimately decided on the Darjeeling because it is the more unique one of the two and I needed some caffeine to get some work done. I had my laptop and my huge purse with me... and the restaurant only had one other table of guests... and yet I was squeezed into this tiny table with limited space. As "nice" as they were trying to be... maybe not common sense on giving the customer a comfortable experience. So their Afternoon Tea ($45/person) is cheaper than other afternoon tea experiences but it is also more lacking in offerings. No scone and accompaniments, no option for soup or salad. It is basically more affordable because it is offering less. The tea came out first. CATFISH MOMENT. When I was sampling the tea, the tea display in front had these tubes of loose tea leaves. Most tea houses offer teas with loose tea leaves... somehow when I get my tea pot, IT'S A TEA BAG. HOW DISAPPOINTING!! The tray was simply a top layer of savory bites and a bottom layer of sweet bites. Remember my comments on the red flag about not requiring a reservation prior?? Well most tea houses require a reservation so they can prepare an adequate amount of treats. I TASTED the staleness and lacking freshness of these offerings. We went the day when there was a large party so it got a little noisy but after they left, the place was quiet down when we could finally having conversation without yelling at each other. This spot was formerly called Tea Modern Chinese, but now it's Star Leaf Orange! They're known for their Asian-inspired afternoon tea, but now they also serve lunch and dinner. For small plates/apps, I'd recommend the Thai Prawn Ceviche! It has black tiger prawns, onion, tomato, cilantro, mint, and Thai chili fish sauce (the best part!). It's so yummy! It's marked as spicy, but I didn't think it was too spicy which made it enjoyable! It's very refreshing. Great way to start the meal. For mains, we got a few different dishes. My favorite is their Madame Noi's Pork Collar. It has a tasty soy molasses marinade and comes with lettuce cups, cucumber, mint, Thai basic. They give you a basil garlic dipping sauce on the side and some rice. With this dish, you build your own wrap with the ingredients provided. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the texture of pork collar, but this one was really good! One of their menu highlights is their Royal Crown Fried Rice. If you get it with the seafood and fish roe, it comes with this layer of fish roe across the top of the fried rice. So pretty to look at! You can also add chicken, beef, or mix to your fried rice if you prefer. The Golden Curry has a nice variety of vegetables including eggplant, zucchini, string beans, red bell peppers, and scallions. I've already been to Star Leaf in Pasadena and enjoyed the experience, so when I heard that they had taken over where TEA Modern Chinese used to be, I knew I had to come try it. I brought my cousin along for Saturday afternoon tea (online reservations were super easy to make ahead of time), and we were made to wait a little bit while our table was prepared. We didn't mind at all, since there was a table near the entrance area that was laden with teapots, from which guests are able to pour themselves complimentary samples of tea. It was nice to be able to try the various teas ahead of time so that we could decide ahead of ordering. It was a nice breath of fresh air to try an afternoon tea with an Asian twist, and we loved how affordable yet delicious the savories and sweets were. What a sweet place to come to for a High Tea experience. My friend and I made a reservation to bring our two college girls and I did not disappoint. The service was very friendly and attentive. They had various teas to choose from and provide provided a table to sample that before you ordered. The lady (I believe she was either the manager or owner) who was helping us out with our orders throughout our meal was very friendly & attentive. We got the siu mai to share with the table, but it ended up being the last to arrive--we assumed that it was because they were made fresh to order. My mom & I asked for the chilean sea bass, but we were told that the dish wasn't available for that day so we opted for the chicken satay instead. My dad ordered their black pepper beef strips. Luckily, there was a parking structure (Old Towne West Public Parking Structure) within walking distance which didn't charge. My friends and I had a reservation but they looked open for walk-ins since it wasn't busy. Overall the food, ambience, and service were great! We ordered afternoon tea ($45 per person) and shared other plates that were not included (spicy tom yum soup and scallion pancakes). The asian-inspired afternoon tea included savory items and desserts (one piece for each person). Each person also receives a pot of tea of their choice. The items I enjoyed the most were the soup, masala chai tea, raspberry lychee mousse, and curry chicken basket. I personally enjoy going to places with afternoon tea. Some spots can feel too basic with their selection of food/desserts but Star Leaf's assortment really stands out. I've been to high tea before at other places but what made this experience special was the Chinese fusion menu, the food was great all around and everything was served fresh. The service here could use improvement. Our servers were polite but there was a few moments where they forgot our requests for more water, and tea condiments. There is also a strict 90 minute policy which is fine but it would have been nice to stress this in the beginning as it's not written on the menus. For a larger party this would be good to know in the beginning. Or, give us a 30 minute warning as there are mainly female customers (groups like ours) and we're it counting minutes while gathering around tea. Would i come back? Possibly for another occasion. Although I would suggest adding some kind of bread butter and jam component to the menu for the price point. It wouldn't hurt to add in a traditional scone or biscuit but make it Asian fusion. The service was extremely disorganized, with dishes arriving one at a time instead of together. The food itself was just as disappointing. The Thai curry was the worst I've ever had. While we were still eating the pineapple fried rice, one of the employees came over and took the dish away without even asking if we were finished. To make matters worse, we waited over 20 minutes for dessert, only for Deja to finally come over and tell us the kitchen was taking too long and that we could either keep waiting or cancel the order. A lovely spot for tea and small bites; everything was delicious. We had a large group seated on the back patio, which made for a really pleasant setting. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that the teas weren't placed near the guests who ordered them. I understand that the pots are meant to be shared, but we found ourselves passing them around the table to reach the person who requested each one. This is a review of the afternoon tea only. I've been to several afternoon teas, so I came here to experience more on the Asian fusion and tea style. Though I understand not wanting to get tea bits in my cup, I was hoping to get actually loose leaves. (I wonder if this could've been an option in future.) The tea choices were nice and stands out from other places, though a little small--it's likely due to the fact that this isn't a complete afternoon establishment and doubles as a restaurant so space and inventory are limited. I liked the decor, especially the table where the teas could be sampled, and I should come back to try the normal menu. read more

I went last year for Valentine's Day and it was really good so I decided to come back again this year. Big mistake. They changed owners, and you can really tell the difference in quality. First off, it was me and my boyfriend so we each got a set for $45 each. Tell me why they only wanted to give us ONE pot of tea. Why are we paying $45 for one pot of tea?? If we are getting two set of afternoon tea then we should get two pots of tea. It wasn't until we complained that they gave us another pot. Never in my afternoon tea enjoying life have I ever had to deal with this. So honestly that really put a damper on our Valentine's Day. I wish the food made up for it, but it didn't. Everything was bland except for the shrimp ball which was TOO salty. There were also no scones. No scones at an afternoon tea?? Blasphemy. Save your money. read more

I planned a birthday dinner for my friend; there was 8 of us. I really wanted to like this place. we were excited while the food was good, Service was VERY slow. We continually had to search for our server, which is not his fault either as he seemed to be the only server there, there clearly need more staff. We also kept having to ask for missing drinks and we never even got the pot of tea we order and didn't realize we were charged for it till after we paid and left. I don't think we will be back anytime soon. It looks like they need to be a lot more organized. If we order items, we shouldn't have to ask where the items are and then remind them how many we order. Seem to happen a few times with us and a table near us. Over ambiance - was nice and a cute please. Service and organization need A LOT of improvement. read more

Food was excellent! Service took too long, but understandable with only 2 staff members that were most likely family and not professionally trained. Decor looked better from pictures, but still a nice spot indoors. Would not recommended patio seating at this time. The AMEX Resy perk brought me here so it was easier to try more than a few items.
