And to think - my husband and I were going to cancel our reservation because of a food influencer that could not have been more wrong about their assessment of this restaurant! The food was tasty and not overly salty as previously mentioned by others. The portions were generous, more than enough for a party of four. The service was excellent! Thank you to Conner and his team that served us during our meal. The price is affordable! We've been to other places that have charged more for less. A good option for large groups, they have plenty of space! My main goal for this review is to encourage giving this place a try for anyone that is on the fence! I know when we were reading/watching reviews, it was mixed but we gave this place a try anyways and we enjoyed it! Hopefully folks are pleasantly surprised!
Saw this restaurant on several social Media websites so we decided to give it a try. We went there on a Saturday afternoon, around 4ish, before the dinner crowd. Got in right away without any wait. The menu was very interesting. Dishes are the best varieties from Southeast Asia flavors. We ordered the yellow chicken curry with choices or breads or rice and salted egg crispy shrimp. The shrimp dish came with about 8-9 shrimp and that was it. So veggie or rice or anything comes with it. The yellow chicken curry was meh. Nothing too excited about. For the price that you pay for each dish, it's not worth the money. The place is decorated tastefully and very relaxing atmosphere. They have a good size patio dining area as well.
Star Leaf came across my Resy search and ended up being a spot I try for my birthday. I went on a Saturday at around 2:00 pm as a walk-in. I was able to find metered parking on the street; not sure why but I didn't need to pay that day! Upon arriving, we were fortunate that there was no wait time and got seated right away. Their menu was quite extensive so we took some time to browse before we ordered. They had a main menu and also a special menu. We pointed out some allergies to the staff and he helped us work around it. The orders came out quickly and he checked in on us frequently to see if we were okay. Great service! Bakka Wild Salmon - This salmon had a lot of things going on for it, in a good way! The combination of flavors felt very refreshing, especially on a hot day. The lime and basil played a big part there. Crispy Short Rib with Lime - Even initially before coming here, this was the dish that caught our attention. I will admit the portion size was a bit smaller than I expected and was even skeptical when it came out. However, without a doubt, this was the highlight of the visit. As someone that loves savory foods, this really hit the spot. The burst of flavors settles in right away. Truffle Wok Seared Noodles - We wanted to pick this noodle dish as a balance to the protein dishes. It did its job but it tasted okay. Not something that stood out. Slow-Drip Vietnam Coffee Flan - I liked the caramel that was layered on the flan, it was crunchy and added a nice texture. It was a nice presentation but tasted okay. Thai Tea - This was my personal drink. It was a standard Thai tea but came with ice cream on top. It was not too sweet but didn't stand out compared to other items. Strawberry Pandan Lemonade - This was my girlfriend's drink. I had a small sip here but found it was refreshing and not too sweet. However, I didn't really get any pandan flavor, mainly strawberry. When it all comes together, it was a good experience. The interior of the story is more dimly lit and felt like a romantic night dinner, despite being the middle of the day. The dishes had a balance of standard and hidden gems. Everything was more than sufficient for two people to share. Service was great and very attentive. Will come back for the Crispy Short Ribs! American Express is accepted here.
I have been to this restaurant before when it was Roy's Hawaiian restaurant. I am glad Star Leaf has kept that tropical vibe inside. A friend and I met here for happy hour prior to a performance at Pasadena Playhouse. It couldn't be more perfect since it is 1 to 2 blocks away and you only have to park once. You also do not have to rush. They have happy hour until 6 PM and another one at 8 PM. The options for drinks and food, as well as the prices are very appealing, but the quality and taste really make it. The food is more of a Thai fusion with strong Thai flavors. The bar bites are meant to be small, but we ordered about four items that completely filled us up as dinner. Standouts for me, worthy tiger, prawn, ceviche, and the crispy Seabass with mangoes, mango sauce, and papaya salad. All the food has a kick, but it is not overly spicy. When I walked into the bar, I saw some house made bitters and fresh ingredients everywhere so I knew the drinks would be awesome. The Peacock margarita has passionfruit and a touch of Mezcal in it. The lychee margarita is not too sweet and so well balanced. Our mixologist, Sebastian was delightful and provided incredible service. I could go back for all these reasons and definitely will do so
My family and I have been here multiple times and have enjoyed ourselves every time. The Pork Collar was our favorite - the mix of flavors was honestly so good! All of the dishes were solid from the fried rice (which was much larger than expected), to the seasonable veggies. The ambiance is great - we saw larger groups celebrating birthdays and folks on dates. I do think they need to staff more waiters. We saw one waiter handling all the orders with support from a bus boy. She was pretty busy and handling the tables well, but didn't have much time to check in on us, refill waters, etc. Tip: there is validated 1 hour parking at 44 Madison
This place has easily become one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the area. Whether it's celebrating a birthday or just going out for a date night, this place does not disappoint. Definitely recommend trying their 12 hour Braised Angus Short Ribs, the Golden Salted Egg Yolk Prawns, and the Spicy Thai Som Tum Mango Salad. SO DELICIOUS! Staff are always very friendly and personable!
Came here with my family to celebrate my Dad's birthday. We had a party of 4 which was perfect for the family style portions of food. The inside of the restaurant was elegant and comfortable. The decor reminded me of a tropical palace. There is plenty of seating and tables which could definitely accommodate a larger party. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Shoutout to our server Connor for his hospitality and good vibes. Now on to the meal. The food came out in a timely manner. Each dish, in our opinion was seasoned well and flavorful. The highlight for me was the Thai Royal Curry with soft shell crab. I would definitely order this again, with some white rice. The Royal crown fried rice, which I've seen a lot of people get, was ok/good, but beautifully presented. This restaurant is a great place to celebrate a special evening, especially if you're in the mood for Asian cuisine.
Yall better treat your staff well- The only reason why I'm leaving a positive review is for Connor. The happy hour menu online is outdated, the new hh menu is significantly smaller. We ordered their SINGAPOREAN WINGS(5PCS) and when it arrived, we only got three pieces. I asked them to cross verify the menu and with the kitchen. They're claiming since the wings were bigger than usual, they only gave me 3... We went back and forth and the kitchen still stood their ground. You can't advertise 5 wings and give me 3. Buy smaller wings if you're cheap. Connor made it right by asking them to make the additional wings we were promised at the end of our meal. The apps were tasty- their royal fried rice is nothing special. I'd come back for happy hour in Connor's section but nothing else.
This place is by far one of the best places to eat in Pasadena. We were lucky to be seated in the Athena section again. She also remembered the table. She always gives the best selections for the table. She is beyond kind, and as I said before, always asks to sit in her section. She is a true joy at the table. We, of course, ordered all the same favorites in the photos and were able to try the desserts too. The ambiance is very fun and uplifting. I will be back again soon. So glad this location is thriving and here for everyone to try.
Great vibes and ambiance. We came during Happy Hour from 3 pm- 6 pm and got the chance to try most of the dishes. We sat at the bar for Happy Hour and the bartenders customer service was fantastic. Very chill and we were loving the decorations. The food was delicious and did not disappoint. We ordered the Singaporean Chicken wings, 2 short rib tacos, Shrimp Ceviche, Shrimp cakes and Crispy Chilean Sea Bass. I loved all the dishes my 2 faves were the Crispy Chilean Sea Bass and Short Rib Tacos, they both come with really good dips on the side. I will say they often change their Happy Hour items. We will come back again soon! Can't wait to try the other dishes.
My daughter took me out to start leave for Mother's Day. We had the Mother's Day six course special menu. Luckily we were able to get a table without reservations. The staff was super friendly and helpful to keep asking how we wear and if we like the food also the ambience it's so welcoming and pretty. I'm glad that we would have this special so we could try a lot of their foods.. my favorite was the line steam Chilean sea bass. The lychee martini was good and strong. Check it out .
Came here last night for a birthday + anniversary dinner. We ordered: Thai som tum mango salad - delicious! I think at a traditional Thai restaurant this would be on the light spicy side so if you're used to having this be spicier, I'd ask. But the ingredients are fresh and it's a well prepared dish. Saigon summer rice paper rolls - good for vegetarians and a nice, light way to start the meal Bakka salmon - the sashimi + mint + garlic trio was lovely and made every bite so bright. My family was practically drinking the sauce. Golden salted egg yolk prawns - my biggest disappointment. If you like salted egg yolk chips, you'll probably love these. I assumed it would crispier, but it wasn't. Spicy string beans - wasn't spicy at all, but still very enjoyed by the table. Thai royal curry with lobster - came with baguette slices to soak up the sauce. The red lobster tail is for show as the meat is right next to the shell. Someone in our group isn't a huge fan of seafood, but he actually ended up eating some lobster because he found the texture to be perfect and the curry to be a great compliment. Again my family was basically drinking the curry by the end. Steamed Chilean sea bass - wasn't super popular at our table. Despite the plate being hot, the fish felt almost a little chilled? Tropical panna cotta - great for a light dessert Coffee flan - best way to end a meal here. It is a sweet dessert, but coffee flavor hells balance it out. Strawberry pandan lemonade - didn't taste any pandan. Was very sweet. My family loves spicy food so we had to ask for extra hot sauce on the side. Our server was amazing and got us chili oil using Thai chilies and house made Sriracha to help turn up the heat on some of the dishes. The menu is extensive so there's something for everyone. Decor was beautiful as well and it's a spacious restaurant. The price point is a little high, but it's fancy restaurant so I get it. For a table of 5 and 2 mocktails it came out to be roughly $50 per person without any left overs (we were hungry that night!). Lots of groups celebrating birthdays so I'd say this place is good for a small splurge.
The service was great, super nice and clean inside. The restrooms were clean and fancy looking - I would approve to go #2 there. However, the flushing isn't the greatest. It seemed really weak. The royal fried rice is too much and I couldn't enjoy it. Good flavor but too many fish balls. It was popping in my mouth in every bite. Would not get it again. The 12hr short ribs were tender. Good flavor and enough for 2 people.

If you were skeptical before, don't even bother coming. Honestly, just go to a local Thai restaurant, instead. This restaurant is one of the worst I've been to in a very long time (yes, it's hyperbole). I suspect there was a lot of review farming (AKA "buying" reviews), judging from the content of many reviews. We had a reservation at 6:30, but did not sit down until a while later. They had poor control of reservations and waitlists (they should not have allowed people to waitlist at all because it was already so busy). I also suspect that some of those guests were the owner's / manager's friends, which did not help things. The food is terrible and horrifically overpriced for the quality, flavor, and technique of each dish. We also experienced significant delays with our orders. They certainly love flaunting their interior design and "modern" dishes, but their reach definitely exceeds their grasp. Now, let's actually discuss the food. The crying tiger salad is abysmal (not spicy in any way) and for some reason has manchego grated on top. The crab royal curry has 2 flavor notes: coconut and spicy; it has zero nuance and fragrance from the spices. The royal fried rice is absolutely terrible. The fish roe on the top is overbearing and the fried rice itself has no "wok hei." The shrimp egg rolls are also not crispy at all. The steamed Chilean sea bass is strange because the sauce just tastes like tomatillo salsa. The pork collar and short rib are tasty, but are not particularly southeast Asian. The flan is bad, as well. There is way too much thickener put into it and isn't soft and silky as it should be. All in all, I suspect a short lifespan for this particular restaurant. It's far too expensive and pretentious for what the food is. Again, just go to a local Thai restaurant elsewhere. read more
Star Leaf is a hot, new restaurant that boasts a contemporary take on classic Asian Fusion cuisine. With this location being their first location in the United States, the hotshot restaurant aims to share the genuine Asian Fusion culinary experience with the Western world. Star Leaf definitely brought some aspects of my childhood Filipino home back to life, with how late, disorganized, and sloppy they were during my time dining there. It all comes down to the service. I am not one to call people out, so for the sake of this review I will refer to our waiter by his first initial, J. My party of four started out the night well: we were on time for our 19:00 reservation, and the hostess seated us immediately. It took a few minutes for J to come to our table, but eventually he came by, introduced himself, and shared a little about the history of the restaurant and the specific location itself while he poured some water on those dehydrated towel disks that grew. If what he said were true, then the founder and owner of Star Leaf, Ruth Lin, really had an eye for interior decorating and space layout. J then left us to our own devices to look at the menu. This is where the fun begins. 25 minutes rolled by, and J did not come by and take our order. What we did see, however, was him servicing all the other tables he had around us. He even took a selfie with one group of diners after he took a group photo of them! These tables were mere feet away from us, mind you, so it wasn't as if he didn't see us. After 25 minutes I went to the front of the restaurant and asked the hostess if the waiter can find some time to go to our table and get our orders. A few minutes later he came by, apologized profusely, and took our orders. The appetizers came way before our drinks did. Once our drinks came, J spilled one of the drinks right at my friend's and my shoes, covering them with a shiny, pinkish tint. He apologized profusely again, cleaned up the spill, and went over to the bar to get another drink. He came back after a while with two of the same drinks while saying, "Careful, splash zone!" as he placed the drink down. I ordered a glass of wine; it was most certainly underpoured. Everyone else's drinks had no issues. The rest of the night was relatively uneventful. Every few minutes we kept hearing the waiters drop a utensil or two at their station. At one point we thought we heard a plate drop, much to our surprise. It was quite an uncoordinated staff for a seemingly high-caliber restaurant. The food in general was not bad at all. It was the first time in a while that I had really good curry, which was the saving grace of the night. The food was served family style, so everyone at the table can share a bit of each dish that was ordered. I can taste the quality that was put into the food, which was a step in the right direction. The bill came out less than we anticipated despite the above-average price ranges on each dish. The dessert was comped, complementary to J. Overall, the place wasn't bad. The ambiance and food were good, but the service and staff in general need either stronger leadership or just general reminders on proper etiquette. I saw the other Star Leaf restaurants in China on their website and wow, this location was definitely underserving in looks compared to the other locations. If Ruth were to open another Star Leaf in the US, I hope that there would be more flair like their Chinese restaurants. read more

Made last minute reservations for 7pm on a Saturday night. Was sat by the bar which was extremely noisy. Server says magician was entertaining table and noise should die down but it didn't. Food...ordered shrimp skewers in stick appetizer and curry softshell crab. Appetizer looked different than pics they arrive short and wide. Taste wise it was excellent. Came with red sauce and pineapple slices. The large shareable $42 softshell crab curry was flavorful curry wise, however the crabs were half in the curry and got very soggy. Most crab tasted like fried batter. The bits of curry i could eat had inedible crab parts I could only chew then spit out the crab. Most not edible. Was not the kind of soft shell crab you can devour entirely. The curry sauce in the white rice was mainly what you eat and fried batter ~ not impressed. Husband asked for salt he thought curry needed it. Server brought a complimentary plate of fried shrimp chips. Was my birthday i mentioned to server and it was in my reservation comments, he (Jordan) gave me a choice of two free dessert options! Server was kind to offer us a quieter avail table to move to and enjoy our dessert away from the noisy bar. The milk tea ice cream was delicious with three scoops and came with a lit gold candle and jordan offered to sing happy birthday. The crème brûlée was good not overly sweet. Husband ordered arnold palmer it arrived late but server offered free refills when usually they don't. Maybe it's a great place for drinks because there were happy loud people around us. Nice ambiance and decor lighting, this place used to be Royce. Now it became a new restaurant. The food is tasty, I think the food is more of a mix of Vietnamese and Thai style mix. As the sauce and dishes are similar to Vietnamese food. My server name was Anna, she was one of the best, amazing and excellent server I ever had. She is super super nice, attentive, knowledgable on the food, and show an amazing great role model how a great and best server should be! Our table was always clean, she gave me a very detailed information on all the drinks cocktails and food info. My water cup was always refilled constantly and I never had to raise my hand and ask for more water. I wish all the server can be like her!! She told us one of the chef has a Michelin star too. The manager should give her a bonus and recognition on how amazing she is!! I give her a perfect excellent star for service, she is super and really amazing! The food I tried was the shrimp cake, Tom yum soup, pork jowl, lamb chop, and chocolate flan. Also I tried the house star drink and Japanese whiskey on rose petal. I would recommend the Tom Yum soup as it have a lot of taste and the Lamb chop. The Japanese whiskey with rose petal is a picture perfect drink and taste good. They even give you a canvas bag as souvenir when you leave. As part of their grand opening promo. How different and cute. read more

Hey guys!! my yelp acc might've fell off but i came back just to review this place ok first off the decor and aesthetic of this place is So nice and gorgina, if my mom wasnt absolutely slacking i wouldve def got some Bomb pics for my insta!!! ok for food first we had the salmon with vinaigrette and this was SO good mayb my fav thing from the dinner like the sauce was so addictive w/ a nice kick and whoever the lovely individual is who thought of putting garlic and mint as a garnish, i Love you. the papaya salad was good!!! nothing off the charts but it makes for a real nice refreshing bite in between the other dishes. tastes a lil more fishy than typical papaya salads ive had the fried rice was good but again nothing special. if u pair it with the salsa verde from the salmon tho, bumps it up +5 points trust lastly is the thai royal curry and this was rlly good!!! get it with the soft shell crab if ur an icon Plz its actually so crispy and the curry has a really nice flavor kinda reminds me of vietnamese yellow curry if u've had that as im writing this im still lowkey in the restaurant and we ordered mango sticky rice as dessert but it hasnt come out yet but i have no doubt it will prolly be buss down delicious as well. This place is amazing. It's on the pricier side for Asian cuisine, but the atmosphere, quality of food, and presentation make it worth it. The dishes are served family-style, so keep that in mind when ordering. The roe fried rice is exceptional--the crunchy bits of roe really elevate the flavor. The lobster curry was a 10/10--extremely delicious with a generous portion. The banana leaf chicken was good, but it didn't stand out as much as some of the other dishes. The mango sticky rice was tasty, though it didn't make a huge impression compared to the rest of the meal, but still very enjoyable. read more
I usually reserve 5 stars for perfection. If Yelp allowed half stars, I'd give this place 4.5 stars. The ambiance is both chic and comfortable. Unlike many Asian restaurants, this place is very clean, and I hope they maintain that as time goes on. Our server was excellent, and everything we ordered was delicious, except for the coffee flan. It lacked a distinct coffee flavor; a shot of cold espresso would have been a nice touch. We also felt the portion is small considering the price. read more

So I just discovered this restaurant recently. They just opened up not too long ago (as of this review) so I decided to go and try it. My first impressions was the look of the place. It's beautifully designed and has a clean, asian style design. Very cool. Now to the food. This is "Asian cuisine" but in a unique style. Hard to explain. There are elements of standard asian food here but it's done differently. The quality is very good and service is very attentive. I ordered the egg roles, fried rice, muscles and the short rib. The egg roles were probably the most standard of everything I ordered though they are on the bigger side. In fact, most dishes are in a family style portion (just FYI). The fried rice comes with salmon roe on top which is different but if you're like me and don't care for Salmon roe, just ask for it on the side. The short rib was tasty but a bit dry but if you like the curry sauce that comes with it, that shouldn't be a problem. Finally, I had the muscles which is served with a slightly spicy broth. If you're fine with spice, then you should be fine. Overall, I had a good experience and will probably return in the future. I recommend visiting this restaurant if you're in the mood for something different but good quality. read more

First time at Star Leaf and it did NOT disappoint! The dishes were delicious, ambiance was clean and modern but the star of the evening was the service! Justin was absolutely fabulous! He gave the best recommendations and even did some storytelling for us! He really made our night and is the reason we'll be coming back again and again! Thank you Justin! Went for a work Christmas celebration. The service was amazing. Our waiter selected all of our appetizers (5) and he made some excellent choices. The salmon, short ribs and shrimp skewers were my favorites. The short ribs were so tender they melted in your mouth. Everything was flavorful. The ambiance was upscale and could be romantic if on a date. Will definitely be back and recommend to friends and family. I wish I could remember our waiter's name because he deserves recognition. read more

Service was a 5++ Ambiance was a 5 Food was a 4 The restaurant as you walked in felt luxurious and as if you were walking into a different county with a speakeasy feel to it. Our server Elysia was top notch! She had the most impeccable hospitality style and the warmest smile which exuded very authentic. We had the royal fried rice, the fried egg rolls (both recommended by her), papaya salad (my sisters request) and the soft shell crab spicy curry (can't resist soft shell). The winning dishes were the fried rice and the egg rolls. Not usually a fried rice kind of girl but this one was out of this world and those egg rolls... yUUM to the max! The curry and the salad was not enjoyable on my palate as the other dishes. My sister loved their version of Thai tea and my drink was very refreshing. Cant remember what it was called but it was a nonalcoholic with pandan in it. Went well with the meal. My sister and I agreed, we will be back for the winning dishes, it was that good! read more

Update: Returned three days later for lunch! This time, there were a couple of misses particularly that of the Crying Tiger Salad which was confusing at best, mediocre at worst. While everything else clearly read Southeast Asian, I was quite confused by what this salad was supposed to be. The use of leafy greens like arugula also meant it came rather soggy as opposed to crisp, in addition to being bitter. Our wonderful server was kind enough to remove it from our tab. The other just-ok dish was the Malay curry, which also tasted a bit flat without any complexity. The Thai tea with ice cream is delicious, the lemonade with orgeat needed more orgeat. We also got our pork collar dish before the starters, and our curry ended up on our neighbors' table, so it looks like they're still working out some kinks. The food was, UNDENIABLY delicious in a beautifully-appointed space. I run off to Singapore every 6 months to visit with family but really, because I miss the distinct southeast Asian flavors. I was feeling a bit bummed since I wasn't making a trip this summer, until my friends and I went to Star Leaf for dinner. Good god. Let's start with the cocktails. The Singapore Sling is absolutely just like the one at Raffles and actually cheaper, without the "ick" of eating inside a plantation style hotel (complete with peanut shells...). The lychee martini was delightful. The Muay Thai with the pandan orgeat was the most unique -- but all of the cocktails were delicious. Starters: We had the Saigon Summer Rice Paperoll which was a fusion of a spring roll and an upscale popiah. The Tom Yum soup was rich and flavorful, but for me the star was the tofu. Not sure how they managed to fry it perfectly with umami, texture and none of the grease. Entrees: They were out of the banana leaf chicken so we got the pork collar - yum, and we also ordered the Thai Royal Curry which I can eat everyday. It came with bread but they're currently serving unlimited steam rice and we asked for multiple bowls. I want to try the rest of the menu. Dessert: They were sold out of the flan so we opted for the mango-sticky rice, which as our wonderful server Anna explained was not as sweet as how many restaurants serve it. It was great! Lastly, the guy who wrote the one star review by his logic must be the owner of a Thai Restaurant down the street or something. The fact he thinks that all of these rave reviews "must be bought" or I must be the "friend of an owner" is quite unfortunate. We celebrated a friend's birthday here and had a wonderful time! The décor is elegant, the food is delicious, and the staff were so friendly -- they even helped take photos and surprised us with a birthday dessert. Highly recommended! read more

Taste is great. Ambiance is cool. Service tip notch. Parking is easy. 1 hour free parking around the restaurant. Server Cameron is fantastic. Steak is perfectly cooked as we requested. Highly recommended this place. read more
A friend wanted to check this place out and I'm glad we did! The old Roy's location but interior is very different. While I loved Roy's, I really enjoyed our experience here, too. Shout out to Standerson at the bar and one of the owners (with the posh UK accent!). Drinks and apps were tasty! Will be back! read more
