I wanted to try a pizza place in NJ. Now im not a huge pizza fan but their pizza is very thin for the amount they charge the only thing i can think is that they use fresh or organic ingredients. The cheese had a little flavor but it wasn't nothing to write home about i really like the sauce because it didn't have an over powering flavor and it wasn't a lot of it on the pizza. From the amount of people that packed to place im guessing many people love there pizza. upon entry it was unclear where to pick up my food but once directed to the proper area all was well. ordered lasagna - tasty but a big cold in the middle, pepperoni pizza, & buffalo wings that sufficed my hungry. ambiance was giving good family vibes. a gentleman (also picking up his food) had a little miscommunication with a cook regarding his pizza order (something about cheese, mind you pizza = cheese as topping) both spoke a bit "hostile" but that can also be the NJ "culture". i would recommend this place hungry folks + good portions. read more

I've been meaning to try this pizza for a while now, after hearing great reviews from friends and from it's popularity on "best of" lists. Finally made it in recently also bringing along some out of town family to show them what good New Jersey pizza was like. We ordered the Old School (basically a works pie with anchovies, but we ordered without anchovies), a pepperoni, and a white spinach pie. All of their pizza are super thin bar pies which are smaller, so we needed three to feed five of us (we ordered a blooming onion too). The old fashioned was exactly as expected; piled high with toppings and a little soggy from all of the weight, but still good. The pepperoni pie was the favorite; it had excellent flavor. The white spinach pie was a little disappointing; while it had good garlic and ricotta flavor, there is frankly just too much spinach on the pie to really notice it. If they eased up on the spinach, which I understand is the point of the pie, I think the taste would be significantly better. All of that spinach just becomes too hard to chew. Don't get me wrong, the pizza was great and would come back again, I suppose I just expected a little better given the hype. Maybe I went in with my expectations too high. Service was good too and had no issues with waiting for a table or food (I did go on a less busy Thursday night though). Atmosphere is nice and casual as it's a bar too. Our server has to be the worst manager/server in West Orange or in New Jersey period. She was rude, not friendly, she acted like she didn't want to work nor want to serve us, she consistently sucked her teeth when she walked by and she had that "stain't face" the whole...horrible service!!! I've gotta say I was skeptical when someone said you've gotta check out jersey bar style pizza... but it more than lived up to the hype! Super thin is the name of the game- and the game does not disappoint! Cheese piled to the very edges so it gets nice and burnt where the cheese hits the pan- it's delicious! We tried a plain cheese and a sausage/hot peppers/onion pie. Both were incredible! Star Tavern is said to be one of the best of the bar pie style, and I believe it. The place itself has an authentic feel to it- it seems like a true neighborhood hangout. Service was solid- they definitely know how to handle crowds. In the days of Coronavirus, needed some comfort food. Was calling for a pick up order, could not get thru, so I went to the Star. Waited in line, called in my order while in line.....6 feet apart, floor is taped off, so you know to keep your space. Got my order in, then went to pick up some beer, not knowing they were selling beer to go, at a good price at the Star....if this goes on I will pick up beer at the same time. Anyway, waited ~ 30 mins for the pie to be made, paid and went home to a nice thin crust pie. It hit the spot and was nice change from home meal. It nice to support the local business. They have a nice simple process to get the people safely in and out of the restaurant. I look forward to my next visit. Stay Safe All read more

I've had star tavern before so I already knew it was good. My boyfriend and I ordered a plain pizza, hot pepper whole wheat pizza, wings and calamari for delivery. Everything was already done in 25 minutes. The last time I was there I ate in and they forgot an appetizer and took forever to come by our table so we decided to skip that all together and just order pick up. I love that the pizza was super thin cause I like the thin crust of pizza. The hot pepper toppings are also great cause it gives you the right amount of spice. However, I do have to mention that pickup does have it downside, in that the pizza crust isn't as crispy by the time you get home. read more

Simply the best bar pie I have ever had, ever. If you belly up to the bar for a beer, I recommend the bar pie with hot peppers light. The pickled hot peppers are my favorite, but they are very generous with them. Beware. I am a regular, getting pies for the family a few times a month. Came here with some co-workers after hearing rave reviews. I'm a pretty snobby pizza guy so I was a little skeptical, but wanted to finally give them a shot. Very glad I did. Place is a little small, but I loved the old-school ambiance. Parking was fine for us as we got here a little early, but I could see it being a pain if they were packed. We ordered three pies and some RC Cola...memories right there! We ordered a plain, a Three Cheese with sauce (ricotta, romano, and mozzarella), and a sausage and meatball. Pies came out family quickly and we ordered some refills... I liked the plain pie the best actually - great flavor and their sauce is great. The meat pie was also delicious - especially the sliced meatballs, but the sausage didn't blow my doors off. Finally the Three Cheese was just ok...I think it would have been better with a little sauce or if we added ham or something to it. Regardless, we hammered it like we hadn't eaten in weeks. Got the bill and realized that they don't give free refills...at $2.50 a pop they really get you with the soda...a warning from our waiter would have been nice. read more

Heard of Star Tavern for a time but never had a chance to go. My coworkers invited me to attend on a Friday and I was eager to go. I knew what I wanted upon entering: a beer and a bar pie. The pizza did not disappoint. Thin slice, cheesy, and crispy. I shared slices with coworkers but could have eaten the entire pizza by myself. I enjoy pizza where the sauce dominates the flavor without too much grease and oil. Great choice on my part ordering the pizza. I will return again for same items. Atmosphere was very relaxed, especially after work. Dark wooden walls with historical baseball paintings with playoff games on further established an environment to hang out with buddies and eat pizza. After hearing much hype about the pizza, my husband and I tried Star Tavern. As soon as I walked in I wasn't sure if you wait to be seated or seat yourself. At the end of our unwelcoming meal, we received the bill. $47.00 and change. I handed her a $50, and in addition, I asked for change of a $20.00. She came back with the change of $20.00 and decided for herself to keep the $2.00 and change from the bill. Why didn't she give me the change. It was going to be part of her tip but that's for me to do. How presumptuous of her to not hand it back to the customer. When I questioned it, she threw the money on the table in a huff. Her $8.00 tip became $6.00 but she really should have received less than that. Not going back so fast. And, the pizza was okay. Been here before but my first review. Visited on October 9th & it was packed with many families & people on lunch or off for Yom Kippur. It was about a 40 minute wait & pizza does not disappoint. Regular with extra cheese for this guy; great sauce; crust & taste. Less salt would be preferred. One aspect of Star is organization to get a seat or booth. Better signage is needed in front to let customers know they have to wait to be seated. One couple walked in & sat down & another server gave them menus while another party & myself were waiting. Another couple walked in & wanted to site in the booth just cleaned for me & could not understand why they had to wait. Kevin E was my server & took excellent care of me & explaining to everyone to be patient & they would get a chance to enjoy great pizza. There is some parking at the actual building and there is a lot next door with additional parking (which you'll need to use if you go around dinner time). The wait staff is very helpful, polite, and works quick! The atmosphere is very cool and somewhat retro. There are arcade games, booths, plenty of posters, neon signs, and a bar seating area. The pizza is fantastic. Star Tavern has some of the thinnest crust I've ever experienced on a pizza. The base was super thin and pleasanly crispy.
