ITS STARTING TO FEEL LIKE A SCAM From the beginning, the lack of communication was unacceptable. Important information regarding the move, timing, and costs was not properly communicated to me, yet somehow I was expected to financially pay for their lack of communication and inefficiency. What makes this even more frustrating is how long the move took. This was not a full one-bedroom apartment. It was essentially one bedroom with significantly fewer belongings than you would normally find in an actual one-bedroom apartment. Despite the small amount of furniture and personal items involved, the job took considerably longer than I was led to expect. When you're paying a moving company based on time, efficiency matters. A relatively small move taking far longer than anticipated doesn't just inconvenience the customer--it directly increases what the customer has to pay. I should not have been financially responsible for a job taking substantially longer than reasonably expected, especially considering how little was actually being moved. At one point, I felt as though I had no real choice but to pay what was being demanded because the company was still in possession of my belongings and valuables. That is an incredibly uncomfortable position to put a customer in. I felt like my options were either pay the amount being requested or potentially not have access to my property. My interaction with the sales associate, Pablo, made the experience even worse. I felt that some of his remarks and assumptions toward me were prejudiced and based on stereotypes or projections from his previous experiences rather than anything I had actually said or done. Customers should be treated as individuals and with basic professionalism--not judged based on assumptions about who they are or what previous customers may have done. This left myself and my old lady feeling beyond disrespected. As a man, you know the feeling were you feel you have to do something unless the disrespect would continue? Thats where I was at. Then there was the actual moving crew. For a company called Starving Students, two older gentlemen arrived to complete my move. To be clear, my issue isn't simply their age. My concern was whether the company sent a crew physically equipped to complete the move safely and efficiently. Based on how long such a small move ultimately took, I did not feel that I received the level of efficiency I was paying for. The crew hid behind Pablo and Pablo hid behind the crew. The entire experience felt backwards: poor communication on their end became an additional expense on mine. A small move took far longer than expected, yet I was responsible for the increased cost. And when I questioned what was happening, the company still had possession of my valuables, leaving me feeling as though I had very little leverage other than to pay. Between the terrible communication, excessive amount of time taken for such a small move, unexpected additional costs, the way I felt pressured while they had possession of my belongings, my interaction with Pablo, and the overall quality of service, this was an unbelievably frustrating experience. They far exceeded our expectations because we have had experience with other movers and to put it bluntly they stunk. Julio and Tony really know their job well. They had challenges and met them with no problem. They far exceeded our expectations when it came to taking care of our inventory. We had odd shaped items we couldn't box. They packed them for us to keep them safe for the move. When they unloaded at our storage they took lots of care to arrange the boxes and larger pieces so they are accessible. I booked them because I have seen Starving Students trucks in LA literally my whole life and it felt like a no-brainer, hiring a small business who has longevity and name recognition. If I could give this zero stars, or even negative stars, I sure would. Booked them at the end of December for a move from SGV to SFV. SS subcontracted to some guy named Jim who I never met, who further subcontracted to some kids he found on Craigslist. For my one-bedroom apartment with no furniture, I was promised a one-day move with three experienced movers who would help me with last-minute packing; two kids showed up in the smallest U-Haul, did not help with packing, moved at an absolutely glacial pace, broke some of my things, and did not know how to load a truck. Didn't bring any moving blankets or dollies. I had to call Jim multiple times, who told everyone he was on a job in Oklahoma but it sounded like he was at a cookout, and he eventually sent out two more to help. We did not get everything done in one day with enough time to even take the truck to SFV, so I was promised that Jim would take care of it and throw in a second day with three movers to get the stuff into storage. As we were wrapping up the first day, the kids told me Jim was refusing to pay and had stopped answering their calls when they were trying to get money. I ended up fronting them money that I thought I would get back. The unload day started late due to the movers and then took twice as long as I was quoted. Not knowing how to load a truck transferred to not knowing how to load a storage unit, so I ended up having to get a second one because we didn't have time to repack. At the end of the night, I got a massive invoice from Jim via his third-party moving company Your Price Moving who had promised me that the second day was on him because he didn't deliver what I'd been promised. I was tired and angry and sick of being harassed and talked him down to a less expensive amount, ended up transferring it on Zelle to a name I didn't know, and when I hung up with him, found out he was again stiffing the moving crew who had also somehow footed the bill for the U-Haul. I have never been so disgusted or felt so violated in my whole life and it has taken me MONTHS to be calm enough to write this Google Review. My husband used Starving Students to book our cross country move from LA to NY in June. Moving is never easy, but this was the worst experience with a moving company I've ever had. Starving Students outsourced or helped us book our packing and moving with two separate companies. The packing company didn't label any boxes and seemed to packed boxes haphazardly because it didn't look like much care was taken when we were unpacking. We reached out to the packers and were luckily able to get some money back for damages, but that experience was nothing compared to the drama we had with the moving company. The moving company hired was Prime Movers and final total was close to double what was quoted and delivery was over a week late. We knew the price was based on weight, so fair enough, but our things were weighted in CA and we had absolutely zero communications from the company after pickup until the day before delivery. We were not told the final weight/price or delivery date until 9:45pm the day before delivery. We had air tags in our items and could see them setting in the same location in CA for over 2 weeks!! We called, emailed and texted and they were completely unresponsive and couldn't tell us when our things would arrive. Starving Students also couldn't give us any updates on our things and were not responsive or helpful. We later found out that the company was closed for a week for vacation- which they should have told us about when we booked so we knew there was a longer wait. We were told they would be at our house between 8am and10am, at 10:15 I called to see where they were and I had to leave a VM. I called several more times trying to reach someone and finally around 11:30am a guy called back. He said he would have "Robert" call us. Robert called us about 30 minutes later. Used Starving Students for a small move from Riverside to Jurupa Valley with a stop in Redlands. They worked about 2 hours. I was quoted the minimum of 3 hours @$165 per hour. They added an additional 1/2 hour costing $82.50. They will not respond to my complaint and request to refund the $82.50. In the email with the receipt the internal conversation said they thought I wasn't notified of the additional charge, which is true. Quoted a specific price only for the movers to finish after moving a one bedroom apartment with help from my family. This move took way longer than anticipated for the final payout is much larger than expected. The movers were nice and but they were slow as molasses. Since they were moving slower and cost me more money what upsets me is the fact my family think had to help move items out of my old place and into my new place to try to speed things up. I had been a regular customer with Starving Students for years. I normally booked this company each time I move and I had always been satisfied with their service. However, just recently on December 1, 2022, Starving Student helped me move from one apartment to another and it was the worst service ever. Everything started off okay but I noticed that both movers, New York (his nickname??) and his co-worker (I forgot his name) were purposely moving slow. It took them from 4pm to 9:30pm to move my furniture from a 1-bedroom apartment to another. It wasn't a house full of furniture; it was a 1-bedroom apartment to another 1-bedroom apartment within 2 minutes away from each other. I figured they were stalling so they could get paid more for their time. I get it! That's an old "movers trick" that movers do to make more money for the length of time they take to do the move. (Time means money). But, as the afternoon/evening progressed, things got worse. The movers were careless and had no regard for my furniture nor the dwelling spaces. 1) They broke the sliding mirror door of the bedroom closet with absolutely no remorse. They didn't even tell me about it until I checked the room myself. 2) Both workers took a dump (went poo poo!) in my old apartment, and then again in my new apartment. I personally hadn't even taken a dump in my own new apartment yet! 3) New York's teammate (the other guy) was carrying the parts to my queen bed (the wooden planks that support the bed underneath). When he walked into the bedroom, he deliberately dropped/threw all of the items down on the floor and stormed out to go back to the truck. 4) When coming through the front doors of both apartments, they were not careful at all with the furniture. They jammed through the doors with furniture hitting the sides of the doors and some almost flying forward and me trying to catch them. 5) The headboard of my bed is cushioned cloth. It is now dirty from them dragging it on the street, floor, and sidewalk. The same goes for my mattress & springboard as well. 6) When dissembling my bed in the first apartment, they didn't have the right tools. I had to look through my packed boxes and crates to find tools that could help them. They had to borrow the tools from me! I'm female and moving is not my business and yet I had more tools than them! They even borrowed/used my foldable push-cart because it was better than their own equipment. 7) When it came time to pay, they said they'd get the paperwork from the truck. I asked if I should go with them and they said they would just come back up and bring the paperwork to me. 30 minutes went by and they still didn't come to me with the paperwork. I went down to see what was going on but they didn't see me coming because it was dark outside. Turns out, both of the men were just leisurely hanging out. When they did see me, they were startled and pretended that their pen was out of ink and that was supposedly why it was taking so long. New York even asked me if I had a pen which I didn't. I made them go find one! That's when they finally called their manager to relay the price and helped me to make the payment. Okay, so they are not exactly a stellar crew. I get it. Not everyone has it in them to do their best at a job they probably don't even like and are not even getting paid very well for. And, I do have a heart. It's Christmas time so I tipped them both $10. They took the money but did not even thank me. I even offered to give them my metal foldable push-cart since they seemed to really like it (again, they used MY foldable push-cart and MY tools because they did not have the right equipment). I was hoping it would help them do their job better for future moves. But, they declined the push-cart and that's okay. At least I offered. In short, this was the worst move ever with Starving Students. I am grateful for the past positive moves that Starving Students has helped me with but after this move, I will never use Starving Students again. These guys just don't have a good work ethic and they do not take pride in what they do. To them, it seemed like it was a game. Like, "Ha-ha! The joke is on the customer! Let's see how much we can screw them over! Who gives a rat's ass! Let's stick it to them as hard as we can with no mercy!" They were so obnoxious that I was speechless! In the end, it wasn't about the money they were charging at all. I just wanted them to get the hell out so I could take care of the all the damage they had done. In addition, in route to Long Beach these day workers pulled the truck over and dug through our personal property. They took many valuables a watch and a coin collection. It took them 2.5 hours to drive back and forth and those were billable hours. Their contractors did a good job, but I would hire someone closer if I knew. My first contact in November 2022 regarding my San Diego move was pleasant enough but it went downhill fast after that. I was asked to pay a $215 deposit which I did. I booked 5 weeks in advance of my move. I was told an agreement and receipt would be emailed to me that same day. I never received either so I called the number my rep gave me a week later. No answer, no voicemail. I tried back a few times, same thing. Then I called the main number attempting to connect with their customer service department. No answer! I then called the main number and pressed the "Book a Move" number. Someone answered immediately. I told him that I was waiting for my agreement and receipt confirming my move date. He was very apologetic and even said that he would mention it to my rep to get an agreement out that day. It never happened. I eventually spoke to the man who took my original order and said that I wanted to cancel. At that point it was still three weeks prior to my move date. He immediately said I would not get my deposit back. Since I never got any thing in writing from them, I had no reference about refund guidelines. I called my credit union and filed a dispute. They immediately gave me a provisional credit for the $215 and said that they would investigate. Relocating and this is the first time we've used them. This will also be the last time and anybody who ask me I will definitely tell them to not use them. They're almost an hour late and when it was booked, we were asked about shrink wrap for packaging for boxes, and I was explaining that we will take care of the boxes. we had to go get shrink wrap because they don't bring it, they would've gone to go get it, however, it's gonna cost us more time during the move and more time for materials. Wife went and got the shrink wrap. Was quoted a price ahead of time as to what it would be, when they start loading the truck, they tried, claiming that the price was gonna be higher and that 08 should've never been quoted over the phone. Just some basics. Between three people it took over three hours to load the truck . They went way out of their way to jack up the bill so that way they can charge extra. They claimed that there's a winter storm warning so they had to go out of their way because the freeways were messed up. I left 20 minutes before them. My wife went and left about a half an hour after them. We both got in here. We both want the same way. There is nothing wrong with the freeway. This is BS will definitely be reporting them. So after all the delays , there's damaged items and they give a $225 credit. I've used this company several times throughout the years and am happy every time. Moving is horrible, but these guys make it tolerable. They are careful and courteous, and go above and beyond. The price is always fair and transparent. I don't understand some of these posts- moving takes time! I remember when I was a kid and I'd have my dad and brother help me move- it was an all day back breaking event- not sure why people think movers are magical and can go warp speed. It's hard work and you can't run people- it takes time to wrap things properly and haul things out to play Tetris with furniture and their truck. I always offer to feed the crews- but am declined every time as they want to keep moving citing stopping for a break will disrupt their momentum. I hired this company thinking it was college students. When the movers arrived they were way beyond college age. They were men in their 30's-50's and not college students. They work by the hour and wasted a lot of time gathering small items even after we told them what we wanted moved. They took tables apart and lost screws and cords they removed from our TV. They wrapped most of the furniture in plastic and used a box cutter to cut the plastic wrapping off. One of our couches got cut. I paid a 270.00 deposit to reserve the movers and it took 2 days to move and we were charged an additional 270 the second day which they didn't tell us until it was time to pay the bill. They brought items we told them not to bring and I ended up putting things in the correct area even tho all the boxes had the location written on them. Well for starters they scheduled the move wrong. I called in spoke to Justin and he took my information down for the move. Starting address and destination address. In my confirmation e-mail it was not the addresses I had given and they took my $200 deposit. Turns out Justin never scheduled me even though I paid since Wednesday and had it scheduled for Saturday. I had people I had paid with me to help open location 1 for the overs in 7am, being that Justin said my "scheduled window" was from 8-12. Well 8am arrived and nothing, 9am and nothing. I messaged Justin as "I will be working from home and available till 6pm for anything you need." BULL SHIT. I get no response for over an hour. I call in, HE answers and hangs up on me. Turns out Justin didn't have movers for me at the scheduled time. Oh "they were in a car accident all of a sudden at 11:45am and would not make it to the location, but I have some other movers available from 130 - 5. Again BULLSHIT, He had no one. I waited as they refused to refund the deposit. I finally had movers contact me at 2pm saying they would be there in half an hour. The guys arrive and they ask to see what will be moved. I took them to where I had everything stored. They start loading the truck and I hear them mention well its last min but ok. So I mentioned to them" Did they tell you that you will be going up 3 flights of stairs?" He said" no, we just finished a job and got called said this was added last minute." I told him he was incorrect and showed him the confirmation email for the reservation made on Wednesday. He says we don't work for Starving Students, we got hired we have our own company. I contact starting students Justin to see about getting something refunded for the delay and the fact that they had nothing reserved for my appointment. I even sent Richard an email and asked due to the inconvenience of waiting ALL DAY I'd appreciate a courtesy of refunding me my deposit or partial. He said they were refusing to do that as well. That the delay wasn't reason to refund. I replied to the email saying "it wasn't delayed YOU NEVER HAD MOVERS FOR ME AND GOT A RANDOM COMPANY LAST MINUTE." No response after that. HONESTLY, Never use Starving Students, they charge too much and basically are just outsourcing the work. They aren't even using Students to do the move. You pay too much and they are so unprofessional. They do not admit their mistakes and refuse to help out a customer. It took forever to get responses from them. Find other movers to help. Need movers I can recomend the company that actually did the work for Starving Students, saves you $200 on the move. Just saying. read more
