This place is a Greenville tradition. It's been in business for decades. Family run for a couple of generations and basically unchanged since they started. The menu is diverse with specials several nights during the week. (Try the spaghetti on Friday night or the meatloaf on Wednesday.) The staff is friendly and efficient. The owners are there every day, so if something is not right, which is very rare, they will make it right. Their deserts are homemade, seriously! This time I got the meat and 3 macaroni and cheese, country-style ham and green beans with a roll, and it was delicious. We were looking for a simple meal before leaving Greenville SC. Found this place I wanted breakfast but it stops serving breakfast after 11:30am. Really at a diner most diners serve breakfast all day. So we settled for lunch it was good but basic. Service not bad and food came out fast. I got fish, mac and cheese and fried okra with cornbread. Hubby had country fried steak, mac and cheese with a roll. The Mac and cheese was okay but everything else was good. I doubt we will be back but if you're in the area check them out. read more

I enjoyed the friendly service here today. Although busy I was still taken care of. I ordered cottage cheese and tropical fruit which was very refreshing. My breakfast companion enjoyed their two eggs, sausage with grits. The grits should have cooked a little longer, other than that the breakfast was delicious. Traveling through Greenville we stumbled upon Stax. What caught our attention was the massive crowd lined up outside waiting to be fed. "Well," we said, "time to come back at a more reasonable hour and give this place a whirl." How about lunch on Monday? On their website they say, "Since the early 1970's Stax's Original has been a Greenville tradition and a unique service to the community." Proudly they pound home their roots as well they should. The old school counters with low stools along with tables and then booths appear to sparkle with happiness for all they have served. Ran by Greeks, Stax's has a big menu with enough belly busters to satisfy nearly everyone. And then they seem to stumble. Our server was lukewarm at best, perfunctory, and unfriendly. Although my wife thought her open face beef sandwich with gravy was excellent, my turkey dinner was mediocre like a tired actor running through her lines for the millionth time. It lacked flavor and pizzaz. If nostalgia is on your radar, Stax's has it in spades. If top-shelf diner cuisine is more your fare, they may have some reworking to do. You walk in to a "Seat Yourself" sign but there was a gentlemen there who greeted us and pointed us in the direction of an open booth. The server met us before we even sat down! She got our drink order and let us review the menus that were already on the table. I ordered the meat lovers omelet with grits and added cheese to my grits. Mom ordered the cheese and mushroom omelet with homefries, and my brother go the western omelet with homefrieds. I was blown away. They do not skimp on the filling of the omelets!! They were so full it looked like there was just enough egg and cheese to hold the fillings in. Lol The server and the gentleman at the front door came by asking if we needed anything or more drinks several times and the price was right. My giant omelet and grits was on $11.15! Nothing too crazy but the taste was far from ordinary. The texture, the toast and the savory french toast did not disappoint. I think the chef was inspired that day because my plate came so fast and the food was delicious! It comes with 2 eggs and bacon. I asked for sunny side up, although im not a fan of the yolk being very soft, it was good. The freshly squeezed orange juice is authentic and SO hard to find in other restaurants. This place is a classic for Greenville, SC. I think this place does a good job but not quite a great job therefore I could only give them a 4 star. I been here a few times and each time I got good food but nothing that really blew me away. It will fill you up and be kind to your wallet or purse. This past time I went I got the Western style Stax omelette and it was pretty decent. The inner ingredients paired well with each other and it was a good portion size. That and the potato pieces (sorry don't quite remember the real name) filled me up to full. My gf got the 2 eggs over easy, 2 sausage links and potato pieces. The eggs were cooked well and runny which I love. Our server was nice and quick. She was not wearing a mask but did fill our coffee up quickly when we needed a refill. read more

Very local place in ambiance, which, as a Southerner, I like! Lots of local, historic photos on the walls, real indoor plants, not plastic, etc. The country ham biscuit was good, except it was obvious they had baked the biscuits the day before (a big too hard and not fresh or warm). My family and I were out visiting a school for open house. For dinner we decided to stop by Stax's as we hadn't been for a while. Also, this was our first visit for dinner at Stax's Original as all my other visits have been for breakfast. The restaurant itself was decent, not great, but just fine for a diner. The family ordered sandwiches, one salad for my girl and I ordered the meat and three (chicken fried steak, fried okra, macaroni and cheese and squash casserole). My sons Paladin Club came with tomato though he had requested no tomato. Not a problem, we pulled the tomato off and moved on. Nothing was bad or offensive, it all just tasted very similar. All of the food was under-seasoned but not offensive, and given the older clientele under-seasoned might be a preference. I will definitely visit again for breakfast at some point, but not lunch or dinner. read more

My first dining experience at Stax was nice. The staff was very friendly and we were seated immediately. I dined here for breakfast and had buttermilk pancakes and bacon, with lemonade. My mother had the two eggs with turkey sausage, home fries and a biscuit with preserves and lemonade. The pancakes are a lot like IHOP pancakes, they drink up the syrup. They came out with what looked like margarine floating on top. I much prefer Cracker Barrel's pancakes.The bacon was crispy and they kept my glass full. I have only been here for breakfast and am not sure I would go for anything else. It screams "breakfast diner" to me.... but that's just me. It's a big menu with good food and good prices. Everything is made to order, and always hits the spot. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, good potatoes, biscuits, toast, grits, you get the idea. We have been to other Stax locations and love this one. Today we ordered the deuces special, and two of the two eggs w bacon meals - and you can add extra eggs for $.50 each. It's not fancy but consistently good. Servers that have been there forever, and we always see people we know who feel the same way about the food and love coming here. The part that seals it for me is it's not trying to be anything else. Our total bill for 3 breakfasts with drinks was $23 plus tip. That's what it should be. We leave happy and keep going back - for breakfast, anyways. read more

Let me tell you something, I'm really hard to please but every single bite that I took of my "meat and three" was nothing short of heaven! If you are from the South you may know about "sopping up the plate" and I had enough cornbread to sop up every drop of awesome! My only concern was that we both got a meat and three 11.25 I think I got coffee and we both got water and were charged an extra $5 each. The coffee was worth it but the water not so much. read more

Apologies for my terrible upkeep here on Yelp lately. I have not been informing the fine folks of Greenville about the good and bad of this fair city. It has been a rather tumultuous summer, but henceforth I shall make strides to return to my routine reviews. Having said that, I had a wonderful birthday breakfast with my aunt here at Stax last month. The meal was comparable in selection to my usual order at Waffle House but vastly superior in both taste and price. The Deuce's Wild is a sufficiently filling breakfast that will leave your tummy happy and a few extra bucks in your pocket! The service is excellent and the environment is warm and homey.
