Ok, I am officially on gout watch after this visit! Everything at Steak 48 was remarkable from start to finish. I haven't been to all the high-end boutique steakhouses around downtown and Little Italy but this establishment is a noticeable step above places like Fleming's, Donovan's, Ruth's, HK, etc. Just the vibe, architecture and layout of the restaurant is quite unique and impressive. Many different rooms and sections all with their own personality and level of privacy. Loved the background music. Service is top-shelf of course, and sometimes a bit much. Very personal. The waiter wanted to give me an in-depth tour of the menu. I let him know I had been studying it online for days in advance and just about had it memorized. They called me the day before to confirm reservation and the morning after to see how everything was. Their attention to detail is excellent in every way. The restaurant is quite dimly lit so getting good photos was challenging. I ordered the Bone-In KC Strip, topped with sauteed blue cheese. Outstanding char and such a rich, beefy flavor. Their doneness standard here tends to the under side. I ordered medium and found it perfect for me. Pink throughout and some red in the center. Served on a screaming hot plate. Many great choices of shareable sides. Mac & Cheese is my favorite vegetable so we of course included that. Probably among the finest steakhouse macs I've put in my mouth. Simple, no frills, although flawlessly executed. Creamy, stringy, well blended and hot throughout. They use cavatappi pasta which I adore. The Au Gratin Potatoes were delicious. Rich, cheesy, buttery, creamy and hot. While they tried to hype up their ($$$$) Seafood Tower, we simply started with the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail. You choose how many you want at $11 each. The food was perfect but I need to dive into the service first and foremost. The service was unlike anything we've experienced at any restaurant. Our waiter knew the menu from beginning to end. He made wine recommendations and took the time to ask about our preferences so we could better assist with his recommendations. If you like seafood, do not skip the seafood tower! It is so fresh and can be customizable so that you don't end up with more than you can eat. I ate here with a group last week. I was really looking forward to a great meal and great service because I have heard a lot of good things about the place. Maybe my expectations were too high. What was great: service was very good. Very friendly and helpful from the first phone call to the serving of courses and drinks. The vibe is very cool and decor is awesome. The Toto Washlets in the bathroom are classy high end touch. The food was good. My rib eye was cooked perfectly and tasted great. I had a beet salad that was above average. What could be improved: Our table shared some appetizers; burrata, calamari, and crispy shrimp. They were good ,no complaints. Fried calamari was the same quality you can get at any decent restaurant. Bread was ok. Side dishes creamed spinach and potatoes a gratin were super rich. The potatoes had more butter and cheese than potatoes. We also had Brussels sprouts which were a welcome break from the other sides, but again, the same Brussels sprouts you can get at ant gastro pub in San Diego. Most people in my group said their steaks were too salty. It was very busy and loud. We were seated near the bar and there were tv's blaring. ( maybe not blaring, but distracting and not part of the atmosphere I expected) a lot of foot traffic brushing against us. All in all it was fun and we had a good meal, but for the price, in my opinion totally not worth it. Amazing steakhouse in the Del Mar area! Our waiter, Dillon was exceptional! He gave us great recommendations and treated us like queens. I came here with four of my girlfriends to celebrate friends Thanksgiving and we had a great time. Their cocktails are delicious and refreshing! I had a dirty martini with blue cheese olives, it was made perfectly. I also had a martini with cranberry in it, and it was delicious. I can't remember what it was called. My friends also loved their drinks! We ordered chicken fried lobster tails, beet salad, and braised pork belly for appetizers. I have never seen the chicken fried lobster tails on the menu before and I loved them and the sauce they came with. The sauce was a green chili aïoli and was tasty! The pork belly also was so tender and delicious and I love the sautéed spinach it came with. We also ordered the bone in Wagyu Tomahawk, which was 45 ounces and sliced up to share for the table. We also what are three sides that included chef Daniel's au gratin potatoes, crispy saddleback potatoes that came with truffle butter and chive cream cheese and wild mushrooms. Lastly, for dessert, we shared a butter cake with ice cream. They also handed you hot towels, which smelled like lavender to wipe your hands when you were finished. Here's what we had -- The free bread - this was ok, could've been more buttery and softer but that's just me Lobster escargot - SNAIL FREE!!! This was so good! I recommend Crispy Hasselback potatoes - wasn't exactly crispy but they were still pretty good with the sauce they came with Wagyu tartare - the steak tartare itself was good. The flat bread/pita(?) It came with was flimsy though which made it a little annoying to eat as I would've preferred something on the crispier side. It still tasted pretty good though! Corn crème brulee - THE BEST PART!! I was skeptical at first but it was really good!!! Filet mignon - I ordered mine medium and it was cooked perfectly and not chewy so it was good! Crispy shrimp - it was okay Ultimate warm vanilla cake - it had a happy anniversary message on it!!! This tasted pretty good and definitely satisfied my dessert cravings! They also gave us 2 little chocolate chip cookies at the end which was a nice touch. The drinks we had tasted fine and were a little on the stronger side lol. Service tonight was 4.5 stars, and we were not impressed with the Key Lime Pie, but the overall evening was outstanding. Great experience at the bar last night with 3 girlfriends. We had already had dinner in Little Italy and wanted to stop by and check out the new place for an additional drink. The bartenders were profession, gracious and good at their jobs. It felt like a well oiled machine. The drinks were not out of hand when it came to price and the pours were generous. We were admiring a customer's bread and the bartender got us our own serving in what looked liked a mini cast iron skillet. They also shared some mini dessert cookies with us. We'll definitely be back for dinner. The ambiance is chic. We look forward to the service we'll get the next time we come and to try their steaks. They look very pretty but unless you purchase a sauce (extra fee upwards of $15) it is very bland. But I'm of the old school sensibility that a good steakhouse should present tasteful regardless of additional sauce. Just a good sear and butter render. This isn't it. Wow... this place is outstanding. Not only is the food a 10/10 but the customer service is outstanding . I walked in and the hostess had said happy birthday to me, they give you a written card saying happy birthday, and you get free dessert. ive celebrated here at steak 48 before, and was able to make reservations for valentines days !! my waiter was very kind and attentive for the first 15 minutes, & then after completely forgot about my fiance & i . there was a family table right next to us, who he would go please at least every 3 minutes and even ask how they were, but us. we even had to wait 15 minutes just to ask for a dessert menu and after being ready to order for another 10-15, we decided to just ask for the check. a nice gentlemen in all black came and asked us what we needed and we asked for the check. the waiter went straight to the other table, with our check in pocket, and still after 5 minutes didn't give it to us. we waited for service for more time then we ate. this is our go to anniversary and birthday spot. so sad too see great service given to others, but be ignored. read more

The ambiance is a little too dim for my preference, I'd like just a smidgeon more light. It's just a little too dark for me to enjoy looking at the beautiful food. First, the bread they bring to your table is to die for! The spicy shrimp app is also worthy. It's new so there is a buzz and it's crazy busy, especially in the bar. IMHO there is way too much reservation, dining space for our demo. They need more open bar space. The immediate bar is fairly small and there are high tops around that area, first come like at the bar. Huge footprint, very compartmentalized. Some open glassed booths by the kitchen for a different voyeuristic experience. Some other dining areas around. Mostly reservations here. There is a back bar but they had it for full dinner reservations AT the bar ONLY. Hope that changes because they will need this open for NON reservations, belly up to the bar patrons which is mostly what you get in this town. happy Hour walk ins to hang out for a couple hours, drink, grab some food, maybe watch a game if on and than bail. Of course you'll get date nighters and special occasioners. They offer a lot of steak choices. Some very expensive and other mildly expensive. They have different sizes to choose from too. Some of the larger, lesser than Kobe Beef options are decently priced. I was hoping to love the deviled eggs but didn't. We all agreed they were ok. They are topped with a crispyish shrimp. We decided, for my birthday (which this year ran from June 12th - June 20th with a multitude of events for my 70th Birthday) to head over to Steak 48 to do a Restaurant Review. They still gave us one of the six glass in booths they have towards the back. Steak 48, Del Mar Heights gets so many points for having these booths. Our waiter has an assistant, who checks in to make sure everything is good, regularly. Now that's style. So I'm still not at the food yet because everything up to the food is ah-mazing, including the Raw Bar with fresh oysters shrimp etc. that you walk by to get to the table. The open kitchen which is really big, is quite the show stopper too. OK. Food. We start with appetizers .... so that's Crispy Shrimp and Chicken Fried Lobster Tails. Simone is from Germany and doesn't quite get the lingo of Chicken Fried anything. She's surprised by my explanation. It's fun to eat with people from other countries. The waiter says the Crispy Shrimp is a signature dish so we order the Shrimp and the Chicken Fried Lobster Tails. Chicken Fried Tails are good. And I must say it is crunchy outside, but soft and easy to eat, inside. While I had heard from a friend that I should go to Steak 48 just for steaks, that their appetizers are just ok, I disagree. And actually by ordering the Crispy Shrimp with the Lobster Tails, it's a nice trip into spicy and then crunchy profiles, in the seafood world. We order the bone in 22 ounce Ribeye with sides such as Chef Daniels Potatoes au Gratin, a fully stuffed baked potato and the Corn Crème Brûlée. Sheri, our resident meat eater just loves the steak. I take a couple of bites because normally I don't eat beef and I must say it's everything you want a steak to be. As for the side dishes mentioned: One side dish is better than the next. Everything is done right! Simone orders the Hassleback Potato after I explain exactly what that is. Hassleback? It's a baked potato, (restaurants usually use Yukons, but these are so big they have to be baby russets, cut almost through in strips, like the picture. The way you can prevent it from cutting all the way through is: place chopsticks on either side and you will hit the chopstick before cutting all the way through to the bottom. You baste it (with butter or butter and olive oil, do you season on the stove top with thyme and a couple cloves of garlic). Potatoes cook generally for an hour, so half way thru baste it again. I can do that at home with anything you're cooking and add a really special touch to the meal. Everyone from my group that has been to other events with me says Steak 48 is great, but bring a thick wallet. Yes. It really is, with an inexpensive ($100) bottle of wine shared) still $200 a person plus tax and tip. Steak 48 does a great job at adding a special touch to everything they serve. We eat with our eyes, so the presentation is exceptional. We smell what we're going to eat. Pretty exceptional. And then, we savor the flavor. Well done Steak 48!  I don't mean order steak well done. First time here to the new location in Del Mar. This place is huge and has many different dining areas, each with its own character. The main room has the bar and is busy and active. There are quieter places further back if that's what you want, and also private booths for a more intimate experience. The menu is pretty expansive... note a lot of things are "MP" (market price) which could be fun to explore, but there are plenty of regular items too. Since this was our first time we stayed pretty traditional but the results were great. We had the lobster escargot, shrimp deviled eggs and calamari and shrimp for app... the lobster escargot is an interesting twist and we loved. I am a big fan of deviled eggs so this was great too. Everyone like the calamari but that was probably the least adventurous item. Bone in wet aged Ribeyes were the main - you can opt to have them do a quick char at the end which I highly recommend. This is probably one of the best steaks I've had in SD. Mom had New Bedford Scallops and loved them. As a side we did Hassleback potatoes and crab/shrimp mac and cheese, but the real winner was the Corn Brulee... never had anything like it before. The wine selection here is great and service is attentive and friendly. It's not a cheap date, but we will definitely be back. read more

It took me literally weeks to get in there at a different time that 4 o'clock or 10 PM, but when I finally was in there, I realized why all the hype it is as if I was in Beverly Hill's Mastros once again. you know it impeccable service to the last detail. Perfectly manicured, drinks and food, the taste of the steak was like no other making it a perfect perfect dining experience. I've got to say after all these beautiful talk. I watched this place being built from the ground up. So I was so exited to finally eat there. Ambiance was amazing, very classy. When you walk in into the restroom even the toilet seat will great you. Service was very professional, I love the hot lavender towels they hand out at the end of the meal. When we said we were too full for dessert, our server gave use cute little chocolate chip cookies that was in the house. Food wise- I ordered the NY strip. Which honestly is not what I like personally in a strip. Seafood was amazing, king crab legs, oysters, fried lobster all tasted very fresh and delicious. Steak 48 is the new hot spot and I feel fortunate enough to be one of the first to try one of the newest Mastros Restaurants in San Diego. A few friends of mine and I were thinking of having dinner and one of them recommended this place. When you arrive you probably should valet since most of the parking spots are already closed off for Valet. we walked in with no reservation and but all we asked for was the bar. Luckily they had a high table of 4 right by the bar. The drink were great, the service was friendly and quick. There's a lot going on and the place is massive. I got the KC steak and it was great but I should have got more sides. I'll update my review when I come back in a few weeks. As I walked out I asked to see if they have some opening reservations. Steak is superb along with all the sides. It's our favorite steak place locally! Only disappointment is their ridiculous $80 corkage fee. It makes any bottle you bring in too expensive and their wine list is fine, but their best bottles you'd want with a steak are too pricey!
