My husband and I just wanted a good steak on our anniversary weekend. We had our share of seafood. This was not a good choice. The only thing that was great was the service. Our waitress was attentive and amazing. The steak was so tough I had to send it back. It was already overdone so I chose to replace it with chicken. That was also awful. I have seen the Steak Loft many times as it's right off the Mystic Exit in The Old Mistick Village. I worked at a prominent hotel chain & had heard great things from a variety of customers there. It's not fancy or upscale at all. It's a casual reliable reasonably priced local steak house. Probably one of the few local restaurants that is still affordable. THEY FEATURE AN AWESOME HAPPY HOUR: 4-6 pm IN THE LOUNGE ONLY with a nice array of soups, salads, appetizers & sandwiches for $4-7 which is a steal nowadays. They also feature draft beer, wine & cocktails at an reasonable price. The space itself is rustic with dark open beams & barn board, the Lounge particularly is open & airy. It could use a full renovation as the rugs & general decor is pretty worn but it's not a deal breaker for me. There are 4 large elevated flat screen tvs in the lounge which is great. They also have great classic rock background music that is comfortably & respectfully audible. You are not screaming at others during a conversation. Lol The bartender recommended the NE Clam Chowder & the shaved prime rib Steak & Cheese Sandwich with mushrooms & onions. The soup was a cup of your typical creamy New England Chowdah packed with potatoes & clams. It was served with those yummy oyster crackers. It was hot, tasty & satisfying. The sandwich came with homemade kettle chips. It was a full portion & pretty good. The bar staff are gracious, kind, polite, respectful & seasoned. They are effortlessly on top of everything which is fabulous. Drinks are solid too. I like this place. It's easy to settle in & it has an easy going local vibe. I will definitely be returning to try other menu items. Again, low key & nothing fancy. The wedge salad looked good as did the steaks. I feel like it's easy to be attentive and engaging when the place is empty, but when we stopped here tonight all of the dining rooms were packed and we sat at one of the only available two tops near the bar. Our waitress was holding down the whole area by herself. Yes, there was a wait for our drinks, and then our apps, and then our food, but our waitress was so personable we were happy to wait. We visit Mystic often and decided to try the Steak Loft. The host was very welcoming and sat us in the dining room. Our waitress, Lauren, was great. Our food, not so much. The cream of mushroom soup was good as was my husband's salad. He had the steak tips which were very small for the price. I had a cut of steak I had never tried before and even at medium rare -- it had no flavor -- I chose the Gorgonzola topping which just overpowered the steak. In Mystic for the annual Mystic Boat Parade and told my husband who loves meat about the loft. Immediately the name caught his attention. We were a group of 6 and immediately were seated on a Saturday night around 6:40ish. I have been to the Steak Loft a few time remembering they do not have the good blue cheese but the twice baked potato... oh yeah. I can tell you a few things about this trip: House dressing (creamy garlic) was raved about The salad bar olives and mushrooms were a hit The french onion soup- delicious! The sliced garlic steak had no flavor Twice baked did not disappoint My daughter's cheeseburger was overcooked and the bun was burnt (plus it was the last thing to hit the table- maybe forgotten about? But the waitress did bring her a plate of fries as everyone else's meal was delivered to hold her over- that was nice) The 6 year old kept saying his chicken wasn't hot The entree's were nothing to write home about but we did enjoy the salad bar but for the prices we should have been raving about the entrees. we were visiting to go to a wedding. Diane was our waitress and she was just wonderful. Our food came so fast and we were very hungry from traveling so that was lovely. It was fresh. This is literally one of mine and my husband's favorite restaurant's in the whole entire state. I love how you get a salad before the meal, and the steak here is absolutely delicious and to die for. Every time we come I try a different kind of potato, and this last time I had a twice baked one that was out of this world. Their rolls are beyond delicious too, and you basically have to roll out of here from being so full of yummy food. Went here after a long day of walking around mystic as we heard it was a staple. Walking in was like stepping back at least a decade as the decor hasn't seemed to be updated in at least that long. The best part about this place was the waitress, she was very good, very attentive. My mother got medium medallions, wrapped in bacon with shrimp, the shrimp was very good. The medallions were supposed to be medium rare, but they were extremely rare. It's OK, she heated it up later at home. I got well done steak and it was cooked perfect. I also got crabcakes, which had a lot of filler and I would not get them again. The mashed potatoes were horrible, did not eat them. But what made this place so great with the waitress. This is actually my first review I've ever written but after eating here I felt compelled to write one. We're from western mass and come to mystic quite a bit, but typically end up in downtown mystic for dinner. So this time we decided to stay at the Hilton and hit the steak loft. We sat in the bar area, in a booth, on a Sunday night. Nice band playing at a great volume so we could still have a conversation but also enjoy the music. So the ambiance is awesome. A ton of history etched into the walls. Food was great. Our table had the steak teriyaki, tenderloin medallions with shrimp, steak tips, and a kids fish and chips. Not one person was disappointed. I really can't say enough about this place. I wish there were more places like this! Hopefully it sticks around another 52 years! read more

I was reluctant to try this place because of the not stellar ratings, and after trying it am compelled to leave my own review. I had the ribeye and it was fantastic. Like cutting into it you know it's gonna be really good by how easy it cut. Came with a good sized salad, rolls and a side. The folks next to me had lemon pepper wings and this ATLien was impressed as hell with the wings. I'm in town one more night and will most likely just eat here again. It was that good. read more

Seven of us just ate at the Steak Loft and our bill came to $176. It was a lot to pay for food that was horrible. It tasted like frozen food that was reheated. The wedge salad was small and tasteless. The add on salmon was tiny. My kids ordered chicken fingers for $19 a plate and it came with prepackaged honey mustard. Nothing was made in house. First time coming here and not entirely a fan of what it has to offer. The moment you open the front door, you're greeted by this terrible, musty wood smell. I originally thought it was just the first door - nope. You gotta open a second door to enter the place and then you're hit by even more mustiness. I'll just get the pros out of the way that earned it two stars. Our waitress, Beth, was very friendly and welcoming. She was super informative and was so polite & professional to our party. The second pro: the Steak Loft has this nice all you can eat salad bar. The layout of it could be better, it's simply just a rounded bar and everyone circles it to get their custom salad dishes. I enjoyed what veggies they had to offer and thought that the food was pretty fresh and yummy. They were regularly refilled as well so that's a plus. Okay, the food is supposed to be the star of the show - it wasn't. Everything tasted terrible and was super, super, super bland. There was no form of plating, each food item is literally placed in their own plate. And this is NOT a good idea when you have groups of 4 and greater. With the food, expect to use half the table salt for just your meal. IT'S JUST SO DAMN BLAND AND EXPENSIVE AT THIS PLACE. My beef stew was the size of my small palm and was $20.00. Come on now. We were here 20 years ago and had a wonderful steak and chicken meal. Being from NYC we've had great Steaks. This was better than I ever had. Fast forward. 20 years. We had cocktails that were not crazy expensive. Had a WONDERFUL dinner. Crab cakes, shrimp cocktail appetizers we shared, and each of us ordered a combination steak and grilled marinated chicken cutlet, double baked potatoes and a very inexpensive side salad. You know what's bizarre about this place? The steak is awful but the seafood is spectacular! Been here twice now and here's what I've gathered: --The dining room is dark, rustic looking and generally filled with an older crowd....maybe that's because I've gone for an early dinner? Lol --The restaurant has a great salad bar with all the fixings, dressings and veggies you could want! Try not to fill yourself up here. --They don't really seem to know how to cook a steak. Mine came out overcooked and tasted like it had been placed on a grill that hadn't been brushed in weeks! The "char" on the beef really just tasted burnt. --The baked scallops and fish & chips are DELICIOUS! Those scallops are cooked to perfection and the portion given for the fish and chips is quite large! --Pricing is a little on the expensive side but not terrible. I think dinner meals are around $18 - $38 per plate. Dinner on our way to the Cape. It was the Salad Bar that drew us in (we had lunch here last year) and we were pleased again! Well stocked and beautifully displayed, fresh cut salad greens - iceberg cut into chunks, chopped romaine and mixed greens, sliced cucumbers and red onion, cherry tomatoes, radishes, serve as the basic salad elements. Lots of dressing choices, sliced breads, pasta salad and an antipasto platter rounded out the offerings. I was very impressed with the attention paid to the array - items were replenished and replaced constantly, something rarely seen at most salad bar settings. And the meal itself - I had the evening's special pork chop. Beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. The Honey had the baked cod without the offered breading. A generous portion, also well cooked. We shared a bottle of wine - reasonably priced! The server staff all are courteous, pleasant and friendly. The one (minor) issue was that the side orders of steamed string beans came out several minutes after the fish and the chop were brought to the table. Why? I've been goin to this restaurant since the 1980s. Moved away to Florida for 20 plus years and every time I go up to mystic I stop in here for happy hour. Was just here again last week. Their food is delicious and everyone there is so nice. The inside is nostalgic as everything's the same since the 1980s when teens used to take their jr and sr high prom dates here for dinner. The stuffed mushrooms are to die for.... $4 for the app. The house salad for $3 at happy hour is the same size as a house salad at dinner thats $11. Even has salami in it. You cannot go wrong here for happy hour. Drinks are $4 and beers are $3. I ended up going here 3x within 10 days. The clam chowder is so good as well. I went here my first time in 1983 and have been going at least 2x a year since, even though I've moved away, but make an effort to stop in every time I come up to mystic. This place needs Restaurant Impossible STAT! The interior is extremely dark, has carpet, is dirty, dusty and smells like mold/mildew. The food is absolutely subpar being incredibly BLAND and over/under cooked. The service was mediocre at best. Sides were missing, drinks were missing, meals were missing (party of 10). Our waitress had major attitude and just all around unfriendly. The best thing about Steak Loft was the over pour of alcohol in our martinis and the baked stuffed potato. Visited her last night for dinner and my friend and I overall were happy with the choice. The staff is nice and efficient, the waiter we had was quiet funny. We definitely felt transported back in time with the decor of the restaurant, but it is all decently kept and clean To eat I had clam chowder to start, it was a little thick consistency but good overall and entree was the steak and crab cakes; steak was done just right to the way of my liking (medium rare) and the crab cakes were decent. My friend had a Cesar salad to start (had a little too much crotons for her liking) and half rack baby back ribs with sweet potato fries. The ribs were very good and tender, some fat but not as much as other places she had ribs. She would get them again. The sweet potato fries were really good and cripsy. Good watching girls sing along country to the band Nick Bosse. Worst bar service ever. First I was told by a customer he'd charge me $10 to sit at a chair and added he wasn't kidding. Then when two chairs clears at the bar the bartender girl said oh no, she had a waiting list. So I waited about 5 minutes and no one sat so I went. Beer list is beer limited. And my martini came on the rocks not straight up. No biggie. But try to get a second drink--not happening. Waiting with cash up for 30-40 minutes, while the bartender in crazy full bar!! racks glasses. Other girls disappeared. One drink. Not exactly my best Saturday night out. We went out tonight for our anniversary. We had driven by this place for the last couple years and had always wanted to try it. I am so glad we did, our steaks were cooked PERFECT with such great flavor, very tender and juicy. My husband really enjoyed the house garlic salad dressing, and has been raving about it since we left. The mashed potatoes were so creamy and delicious. Service was very prompt and polite.
