My wife and I came here about a month ago for a late night dinner. I have two major problems with Steak n Egger in McCook. #1 The food was only fair to poor. The mashed potatoes seem like they came out of a powdered box, the vegetables were stale, in the thin steak was very chewy. #2 the biggest problem was that my wife forgot her purse there, and when she realized it, we came back two days later to get it and $70 cash was missing. I don't think our waitress took it because she was very nice, but unfortunately some person went through her purse by the time we got back. Not good. Clearly many people don't have good morals. This place is really small, we took the biggest table in the back just for the two of us. Food was good, I ordered the boneless pork chops and 3 eggs and biscuits and gravy and added some hashbrowns on the side. The former "Snuffy's" 24 hour breakfast emporium has been transformed to a stainless steel abomination of a diner. Maybe a caricature in print or a cartoon in video would best describe the visual impression...it tries too hard and it shows! Let me clarify this. The former ownership "Snuffy's" was in business forever. Love it or hate it, there is a reason it was a "Route 66" landmark. I had Ham (sliced off the bone) and eggs more times than I can count. The flat top grill was seasoned repeatedly for decades, the color, Black on Black! The side burners, in true diner form were representative of an eternal flame. The 8 inch fry pans that intensely cooked fresh cracked eggs kissed the flame as the cook effortlessly flipped the pan to your specification. The taste was Impeccable! However over time the building was neglected, you could see it coming...CLOSED! Back to SNE, I love Diners but not this one. I noticed the seating capacity sign of 44...so I started to count. As I visually scanned the diner footprint I was uncomfortable with the owners concept to resurrect an image of a diner...and miss! I love this style family run diner. 3 generations keeping the desire to provide fresh and affordable meals alive. Not a huge place, but that keeps the cozy set up hopping. Despite many decrying the passing of the old Snuffys, its time had come. For whatever reason, it didn't choose to use its cash flow to freshen up the place, clean its rest rooms, or reconfigure its menu occasionally. It must have been quite a truck stop back when Route 66 was a main route. My theory, years ago, was that if there were a number of trucks parked in front of a cafe, then it must have food worthy of coming back to. Snuffy's could've improved and advertised its historic place. But it chose not to. I must give the current owner, SteaknEgger, credit in rejuvenating the old place. It retains personable wait staff, retains the old grill/counter ambiance, and cleaned up the place. I come from Riverside... an historic community that wants to retain its old time essence but struggles with a new economy. It should learn from the transformation of Snuffys. read more

As they say on TV, this place has jumped the shark for me. After a bad breakfast and horrible service, I will get my kicks on 66 some where else. I was in the area this morning and thought I would stop for breakfast like I have done dozens of times before. Ordered my standard omelet and coffee. I had to beg to get a refill on my coffee and that was the last time my cup seen coffee during this visit. I will say that the omelet was tasty, but the hash browns were terrible. They were dry as a bone and throughout the pile there were cold spots in them. I can't handle cold potatoes. My other gripe with this place is the servers, they seem to cater to certain customers. You can often tell this when they yell out their names as they walk into the diner. Now I have been coming here since they opened the door, and I'm still looked as a stranger. Sitting there dreaming of a coffee refill, you see other people with glasses of water in front of them and coffee being served up in big take out cups. I really don't what it takes to get to become a regular customer here and get served better, but since this is going to be my last visit here, who cares! read more

If I could give this place a 4.5 rating, I would. It's not perfect (a 5), but it's better than above average, especially for a diner. The Steak N Egger on Route 66 replaces the former dive known as Snuffy's 24-Hour Grill -- it's in the same historic building made of local Joliet-type limestone (really dolomite) in an unusual shade of pinkish buff, except that the building has been totally renovated inside while the exterior has been preserved as much as possible (less than four months after the renovation was completed and the place reopened, some dork drove off the road and smacked into a truck parked against the side of the building, shoving the truck through a wall and destroying part of the limestone facade; as the local limestone is extremely difficult to match in color, the repair unavoidably changed the original profile of the building -- but the new owners did the best they could to preserve it, under the circumstances). The shiny new interior is retro 1950s-60s style, complete with jukebox and loads of Route 66 memorabilia, very comfy and easy on the eyes (much more so than Snuffy's had been the last 30 years of its existence, when you were doubtful about actually sitting down anywhere, let alone ordering from the grubby kitchen). Despite what one questionable curmudgeon here thinks, this is a welcome improvement. The current owner, Terry Carr Sr. is part of a three-generaiton Chicago area business and himself a big Route 66 fan, so you could hardly have a more sympathetic management here -- and they know how to run a proper diner. History and rehabbing aside, the food's pretty good and so's the service. I've never had a bad meal here, and I've been by several times since the reopening. That said, the steaks are diner steaks, i.e., not prime-grade aged steaks like you'd get at a fancy steak house -- the breakfast steaks are thinner, and both the breakfast and dinner steaks can be a bit gristly here and there (best to order them medium rare, NOT well done as that will make them tougher). But that's exactly what you'd expect in a diner at diner prices, so no surprise there, really. Everything else is pretty decent for the price. The eggs, omelets, and pancakes are fine, and I really like the French toast and the patty melt. Sure, I'd prefer real maple syrup, but at these prices I'm not going to complain about that (if you want something equivalent to Walker Brothers up north, you're going to pay those prices, too; this is blue-collar McCook, and a Walker Brothers Pancake House would be sorely out of place here or anywhere else on Route 66). All in all, I'm pretty happy with this place. Sure is convenient in the wee hours of the morning, and it's a good breakfast or lunch stop for someone making the trip down old Route 66. Free WiFi inside, ample parking, too. The fact that the village of McCook planted its complete-rip-off Welcome to Fabulous (?!?) McCook sign in the parking lot is just gravy -- we can't stop laughing about that. I'd recommend this place to anyone at any hour. I love that you can sit at the counter and watch as the food gets made. It's the only place in the area that I know of which does this. Food is better than most restaurants. I usually stick to the same bacon, eggs, hash browns, and toast because it's consistently delicious. Most places think crispy bacon means burnt bacon, but here it's actually cooked crispy. Servers are super friendly and attentive whether you're eating at 12 AM or 12 PM. I also like that it's open 24/7 because I hate fast food and it's pretty much the only non-fast food late-night option around. read more

So, I ordered coffee, cream was spoiled, it came out in lumps. Ordered a plain side salad, got a salad with everything on it. Ordered a side of raw onions with my meal, I get a cook grilled onions, and top it off, tried to get mustard on my meal. Top was open, was squeezing, squeezed so hard, the top blew off, and covered everything on the table with mustard. That shows, the employees dont close the top of mustard, and it was dried out. This was my first and last visit to the McCook location. I sat at the counter seat and quickly noticed how dirty the location was. I ordered the skirt steak and was served the smallest piece of meat ever. I think it was gone after 3 bites. After eating I paid my bill with my credit card and added an extra $5 for tip. I got my credit card statement and saw that the bill was $1 more than what I signed for. I can't believe that the waitress changed/altered the tip to look like $6 and change the total from a 7 to an 8. Really?? Not only are they cheap with the meal, they also got to steal?? We expected to get our soup before the meal but the soup never came. So during the meal we asked to cancel the soup and ordered a milkshake instead.. We finished eating and still hadn't received the milkshake. we decided to just pay and forget about the milkshake as we had done with the soup.
