I have never had a bad experience or bad shake at Steak 'n Shake until today. After some hours shopping across the street, I thought a shake would be the perfect holdover until dinner. Bad idea for a couple of reasons! Had to wait about 10 minutes for an employee to bring it out to my car. Due to driving while tasting the very thick shake with a spoon, I was a mile away before I knew the shake tasted like it had smoky grease or some other substance in it! I was in a hurry to get home which is 30 minutes away or I would have gone back to tell them; I sent an email to the store tonight. Something was definitely wrong with the ingredients of this chocolate shake. I will never return to this Steak 'n Shake. After reading some other reviews and seeing pictures taken in the restaurant, I will call the health dept. tomorrow to have the restaurant checked out. Really sickening and a real shame. read more

Food is decent, shakes are good. Service... just not the greatest. I walked in with my toddler, wasn't even asked if I needed a high chair. I had to go get one myself. The wait staff just disappear. I don't expect a full conversation with the wait staff but at least a "good afternoon, my name is ____. What can I get you started with?" What I got was, "are you ready to order? No? Stopped yesterday afternoon, very slow in being seated, then much longer for a waitress to take my order however she brought my drink right after taking my order. Food came quickly and was very good, but waitress never came back for my drink refill as the glass was empty about 1/3 thru my meal. Later finally got a refill when I ordered a shake. Was about ready to get up and leave when the shake finally came. Then another long wait for me and three other customers for someone to man the pay register. Finally got them and the shakes were halfway melted, the burgers were barely warm. Waited half an hour for a check and never got it. The manager acted like she was upset about the poor service we received but went back and talked about us to the staff. Literally the most garbage restaurant in elizabethtown. Food is somewhat decent but management and the employees absolutely ruin this sad excuse for a chain fast food joint. They are sometimes understaffed and when it's busy it makes it worse but the employees still try to hustle. The place is not the cleanest though, the floor is sticky and they don't clean the tables very often. Make sure to speak up when ordering because sometimes they hear your order wrong, so always double check. Although it took a while for our food we still enjoyed it except for the fact we got a grilled cheese instead of grilled chicken. read more

My wife and I went through the drive through the Tuesday October 6, 2015 about 3 pm. There was one car in front of us. The female order taker sounded extremely bored and kept asking us if that was it after we ordered an item. She never tried to upscale any items. When we pulled up to the window we waited about 10 min. for our food and it finally came. She gave us our bags and our large drink and said have a nice day and said come back. I had to ask for our vanilla shake then ask for a straw. When we got home the honey mustard sauces we asked for the chicken tenders were not in the bag and no spoon for the bowl of chili were provided. We normally get good service at Steak N Shake but we normally eat in the dinning room. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. I went through the drive through a few nights ago with my girlfriend and had the worst customer service experience I think i've ever had. I just moved here and I was pretty stoked to see a Steak n' Shake because it's decent food for a decent price and it's familiar. I understand that coming in later in the night there's a higher probability that the service will be slow, but it should have some amount of customer service which is what this specific location lacks. The girl who was taking our order had literally cut my girlfriend off while she was giving our order just to laugh obnoxiously and then immediately afterwards a male voice cut in and said something about how her voice sounds and then he began laughing only to have the original girl cut in again and continue laughing. My girlfriend finishes off our order and the girl can't contain her laughter for the rest of the time we were giving our order. That alone is just so uncalled for and in my opinion, it's very disrespectful and we honestly should've left then. We get up to the window only to not have one single word spoken to us except the total amount of our order. Blank face, no smile, no thank you or have a good night, nothing. Absolutely horrible service and not to mention we didn't get the cheese fries we paid extra for and they messed up both of our milkshakes and sandwiches (put things on the sandwich we didn't ask for). The situation was already too stressful and horrible I didn't even bother going back to fix my order and what I had paid for. I will never go back to this location and they deserve every bad review they get until they get a team together that has more respect for the community as a whole because almost every review they have is negative. read more

First, let's get the food out if the way. It's good and reasonably priced, else I would not fool with the place. Why? The service at this location is, in a word, inefficient. And it has been this way forever. Why can't a franchise owner or area manager or someone with authority to make changes stand back, take a look at what's going on here, and fix it. Requiring the wait staff to not only wait tables, but to be greeter/seater, and cashier is totally insane. As I checked out today, after a lengthy lunch meal, the poor waitress was a bit cross, grumbling that she had tables waiting for her. And she did. My suggestions - hire another cook, so the manager can cashier and can fix any problems before a customer exits. During busy lunch and dinner times, hire a host or hostess. Those people I saw turn around and leave because it took so long to be seated would have paid for this extra person. I'm sure your turn over is high, but fully train a wait person before you stick them with a whole huge section. My order was wrong and I heard the lady behind me tell the waitress her order was wrong. Sweet tea is really not the same thing as unsweet tea. Went there yesterday afternoon with my children, and will never go back again. It took us 5 minutes to be seated. Then we waited 10 minutes for the waitress to come over. She had a bad attitude and hardly waited on us. We had to beg her for extra napkins. The food took 30 minutes before we got it. I was ably to leave but my children wanted to stay. After we ate the cold food I went to pay and it took 10 minutes until someone cashed me out. Then the waitress waited by the register to see how much I was going to tip her. Never again. The only thing that I liked about this place are the shakes. The shakes were nice, thick, and creamy. The consistency was pretty nice for the shakes. However, when I tried their burgers, it was so greasy that I can see the buns were soaked with heavy oil. After thinking about whether I should continue eating another bite of it, I thought if I did, I might have a heart attack and the possibilities that my arteries will be hard like stone because of the lard. The food was fine as usual but the service at this establish was and has remained terrible for years now. When I went most recently, there were only 6 tables for 2 servers and I still only saw my server twice the whole time, waiting on us or anyone else. My wife and I tried to eat in at this location and literally waited 45 minutes for a hotdog and a very simple burger. We waited so long and were so disappointed that people who got there after us were served before us and left before we got our food that we said we wanted to pay for our sodas (that never got refilled) and leave. At least they didn't make us pay for the drinks. We were very disappointed. I want to add that service hasn't always been this way, but once is enough. That was simply an awful experience. Awful-ordered food and my chicken was as hard as a rock-and I mean i am surprised it didnt crack my teeth-then the breading peeled off and it was mush under the rock-it was so gross----YUCK!!- ordered soup the bowl was half full-then they put the food in a sack covered in sauce on the bottom-which I almost put on the white carpet in my car and I asked for another bag and she acted like I was asking for gold-This is probably one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to-Spent $13.00 on dinner-and then came home and cooked a $0.39 Ramen-but it tasted better-Do yourself a favor-do not eat here-dont waste your money the best thing for Steak n Shake would be if they closed down!!! I wish i could give this zero stars. We waited forever to be seated and once the hostess came she informed us they were out of fries, but would substitute any other side. Not a problem we ordered chili in place of fries with our burgers. When the chili came mine was lukewarm, but i was hungry so i ate it. Until my husband found bugs crawling around in his-yes BUGS. As in more than one. We arent the kind of people that just look for a free meal or anything and we usually tip well for good service. So anyway i set my chili aside too who would want to eat it after that. So the waitress went to get the manager and he came to our table and just stood there saying nothing. Finally i said did the waitress tell you what happened? He said yes. I'll take off your chili (i would hope so) then he saw mine sitting on the side and he said is there anything wrong with your chili? Seriously? I said yeah i didnt want to eat it after i saw his. I think the drive through is just a way for them to have fun with us. It really isn't for getting food or service. I have been through there twice (didn't learn after the first time). The first time,I waited at the window for 20 min,didnt get my food and not a soul came by to say sorry for the wait or anything. I finally drove off because I couldn't wait any longer. The second time, there was no one in line,no one in the parking lot. I pulled in at 7:31am and order 2 sausage bagels,nothing special. I pulled up,paid, and then waited,and waited,waited some more. At 7:46 (15 min) I started banging on the window,no one came. Finally, a young lady was going by and I started hitting the window again,she couldn't ignore me so she came over. She went and got a supervisor of some sort, got a "sorry its taking so long",offered to give my money back,which I declined,because if I got my food,ill pay for it. So ,after a total of 19 min,I got my food and left. Moral of the story,dont use the drive through unless you have at least 20 min to wait,. I will not give them a 3rd chance. No stars. The section we were seated in was empty... There were 2 of us and one small child. Took 15 minutes b4 we saw our waitress. A party of 6 came in after us, then 2, then 2, then 1, then another single. All got their food before us. At the 1/2 hour point we got our drinks, and the 3 year old got her DESSERT. No food. Dessert was a cake shake, which so overly sweet the kid didn't want it. We had asked for it to be brought at the end of the meal, with the check. Flagged the waitress down, she was quite rude and curt.'Your food will be here in a minute' (emphasis on minute) she acted like we were bothering her. after 45 minutes we got up and left. Manager didnt seem surprised at which waitress it was. I think the waitress was only tending to tables that she thought would leave a good tip. Too bad, I tip good. As we walked out the door, noticed our order coming out of the kitchen. So we stopped to watch the waitress. She was so confused. So were we.
